BMW Motorrad Working On Rear Wheel Steering On Motorcycles

Image for illustration purpose. The new rear wheel steering patents from BMW Motorrad might aid in tighter turns, motorsport, stunt riding and potentially, aerodynamics tooBMW Motorrad, the motorcycle division of BMW, has patented rear-wheel steering technology for motorcycles. BMW showcased rear wheel steering with chain driven, belt driven and shaft driven motorcycle layouts. The main intention seems to be achieving a lower turning circle and enhanced handling and motorsport. You must have seen Hyundai’s e-Corner system demonstrated on an Ioniq 5. Will motorcycles get to do all that too? Let’s take a look.BMW Motorrad working on rear wheel steering on motorcyclesWe can see a couple of use cases. For example, BMW patented this tech with sketches of a cruiser bike. Maybe BMW got this idea after they launched the R 18 cruiser range. Makes perfect sense as a cruiser has a long wheelbase, large rake angle, and small trail angle. These make maneuverability an absolute nightmare. This is where this rear-wheel steering setup comes into play the most. BMW patents mention potential gains in aerodynamics. They can cover the front wheel now. Given that it has a lower steering angle as some of the task is handed to the rear wheel as well. The patent also mentions rear wheel steering benefits in motorsports when the front wheel is in the air.BMW Motorrad’s electrical rear steeringAccording to BMW, rear wheel steering will provide improved steerability when riding on the rear wheel with the steerable front wheel in the air. This wheelie aspect will definitely impress Character Ali from Dhoom 1. BMW has an electric motorcycle patent too. Both the electric bike and rear wheel steering are yet to hit production.BMW Mtorrad’s connected double sided rear steeringLimitations of such a mechanismApart from complexity, cost, weight and maintenance, I can think of some other potential issues with this system from an engineer’s perspective. Primary of them is swingarm strength as BMW’s patented rear wheel steering mechanisms will replace conventional swingarms.A rider turns motorcycles with lean and shift of body mass to make a turn. This is what we are used to till now. Making the shift to a new steering method is like fighting with your instincts and muscle memory. We might need a lot of time to transition to riding this new motorcycle steering mechanism than what we’re currently used to.BMW Mtorrad’s connected single sided rear steeringPeople who use counter-steering methods (example, steering right to turn left) can adapt to this new steering system better. But counter-steering folks are very very few. Also, stuntmen who drag and drift a lot and off-road riders who lock rear wheels to steer motorcycles, can quickly adapt to this new mechanism.BMW’s patents reveal multiple methods to achieve this rear wheel steering. There were double-sided and single-side mechanisms with physical linkages to the handlebar for steering inputs. Also, there was one patent with electrical assistance for rear wheel steering too, which negates physical linkages as it can take steering input from a steering position sensor like in a car. More

BMW Electric Motorcycle Patent Leaks – Gets G310R Styling, More Power

Ergonomics and Economics of BMW Electric Motorcycle, TVS Apache RR310 electric makeover likelyBMW Electric Motorcycle Based On G310R – RenderElectric two-wheelers are gaining popularity, and many manufacturers are working on expanding their EV portfolio. One such company is BMW Motorrad, which is currently developing its first electric motorcycle based on G310R. TVS, an Indian partner of BMW 310 series, could also launch its own version of the electric motorcycle soon after.Last year, TVS MD Sudarshan Venu had stated that they are collaborating with their German partner for developing a sub-15kW electric motorcycle. In effect, TVS could also manufacture BMW’s electric motorcycle, just like the ICE-based G310R and G310GS are made in India.BMW Electric Motorcycle Patent Leaks – Based on G310RBMW G310R electric motorcycle Design and Styling patent leaksPatent design of the electric G310R is similar to its ICE-based counterpart, but it borrows powertrain components, such as the battery pack, motor, and other equipment, from the CE-04. However, fitting all these components within the G310R framework is not an easy task. To make it work, BMW has carried out several tweaks. And has placed the battery pack vertically at an angle under the front section of the bike, where most ICE-based motorcycles have their radiators. This placement will help cool the battery pack, as a significant percentage of its surface area will get direct air.Electric G310R borrows the ECU and charger from the CE-04, and the ECU is placed under the bike’s belly. Due to the middle section of the bike being jam-packed, the only storage space available is where the fuel tank is. This space could be used to store at least a half-face helmet or charger.BMW Electric Motorcycle Based On G310R – RenderThe motor of the electric G310R is placed under the seat at a 90° angle. The shaft runs longitudinally instead of being positioned across the bike, and is also tilted at an angle. This allows for a shorter, taller package. It connects to a bevel gear that transfers power to the front sprocket, which works like a reduction gearbox, increasing torque and gearing down the rotational speed of the motor. Lastly, a belt final drive connects to a large rear sprocket, which is another form of reduction.BMW CE-04 Specs to influence BMW G 310 R Electric performance – Assuming the electric G310R borrows the battery pack and motor from CE-04, it could make 42 hp of max power and 62 Nm of peak torque, which is better than the ICE-powered G310R that makes 34 hp and 28 Nm.Advantages, Sound and Noise Levels of BMW G 310 R ElectricThe electric G310R and BMW G 310 R electric offer several advantages over their ICE-based counterparts. Firstly, they are environmentally friendly, producing no emissions while riding. Secondly, they have a lower operating cost than ICE-based motorcycles, as they require less maintenance, have lower fuel costs, and offer better fuel efficiency. Lastly, they provide a smooth, quiet ride, which is a significant advantage for urban riders. However, the cost of the battery pack and other components could make the electric G310R more expensive than its ICE counterpart. In US, BMW CE-04 is available at a starting price of $11,795 (approx. INR 9.76 lakh). TVS version could be much cheaper though.BMW Electric Motorcycle Patent Leaks – Based on G310RDisclaimer – Design renders presented in this blog are solely for illustrative purposes and have not been commissioned, approved, or endorsed by the manufacturer. TVS Apache, BMW 310cc To Get New Engine – Patent Leaks

BMW’s new Shift Cam single-cylinder engine is expected to deliver higher fuel efficiency and reduced emissionsTVS Apache 310 and BMW G310 RREngines with variable valve timing (VVT) and lift systems have been developed by various OEMs such as BMW, Honda and Ducati. Till now, VVT systems were largely used with larger capacity engines. In case of BMW, engines used with bikes like R 1250 boxer twins and the S 1000 RR have VVT.Now a new patent reveals that BMW is planning to introduce the Shift Cam system with its 300cc single-cylinder engine. Another target could be C 400 GT, which also has a similar motor. However, the primary candidates to benefit from this upgrade will be G310R, G310GS and G310RR. The updated engine is likely to be shared with TVS as well for its 310cc Apache range.BMW single-cylinder Shift Cam engineAs compared to Shift Cam system used in larger capacity BMW engines, the one to be used with the single-cylinder motor comes with a unique set of tweaks. Among the primary challenges is to make the Shift Cam system compact, so that it can fit inside the relatively smaller sized single-cylinder motor. This has resulted in some innovative tweaks to the single-cylinder motor.Just as the name suggests, Shift Cam works by altering the cam timing as well as the valve lift. This is achieved by shifting the inlet camshaft so that one of the two cam profiles is always in contact with the inlet valves. The Shift Cam system is beneficial as it increases fuel efficiency and reduces emission in both low-rpm and high-rpm scenarios.BMW / Apache 310 – New engine patent leaksBasic idea of Shift Cam system is the same in case of the single-cylinder motor. However, there are some changes such as the compact size of the Shift Cam. BMW has been able to reduce the size by using a solenoid actuator that is placed between the two intake valves. Since it is a 4-valve engine, the size of camshaft can be based on conventional design principles.BMW / Apache 310 – New engine patent leaksAnother innovation is a unique angle for the spark plug. This is necessary since the actuator is placed in the middle. As the whole camshaft slides, an extra idler gear has been provided. It connects the intake and exhaust cams. This is different from a direct chain drive that goes from the crankshaft to the camshafts.Launch timeline not knownIt may take some time to perfect the new Shift Cam single-cylinder setup. So, BMWs entry-level 310cc bikes are unlikely to get the updated engine anytime soon. Also, the manufacturing cost of this new engine is not known. Not all patents make it to production stage, as innovations need to have business viability for commercial applications.BMW / Apache 310 – New engine patent leaksIn its current form, BMW’s 313cc, water-cooled, single-cylinder engine generates 34 hp of max power and 28 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 6-speed constant mesh gearbox. Performance numbers won’t change much with the upcoming Shift Cam single-cylinder engine.Source More

BMW G 310 RR China Launch Soon – Will Be Exported From India

BMW G 310 RR is the smallest and cheapest of BMW’s RR range of motorcycles worldwideNew BMW G 310 RRBMW Motorrad recently launched the G 310 RR in India. It is based on the TVS Apache RR 310. We were expecting the German brand to make some changes to the looks, to create a unique identity for the baby RR.But instead, what we got was a BMW branded TVS Apache RR 310 with some TVS proprietary features deleted for an addition of Rs. 20,000 to 35,000 depending on variants. With the G 310 RR, BMW has expanded its popular 310cc portfolio to new heights while reaching new customers in a significantly lower price bracket than their indigenous products.BMW Motorrad has sold 50,000 units of their 310cc range globally, of which 15,000 units are clocked from India alone – making it their biggest 310cc market. China comes next with 6,000 unit sales. To improve sales further, BMW is going to launch the G 310 RR in China.BMW G310RR Export to ChinaChina is an important market for BMW Motorrad. G 310 RR is expected to do really well in Dragon land. But the BMW G310RR is manufactured here in India by TVS in Hosur plant, Chennai as part of a collaboration between the two.2022 BMW G310RR India LaunchMarkus Mueller-Zambre, head of Asia, China, Pacific and Africa region at BMW Motorrad, said that BMW G 310 RR exports from India will start with the Chinese market. China is the second market where the baby RR will be launched after India, as it is manufactured here. The China launch will happen in the coming months. He also added that BMW G 310 RR will only be manufactured in India at TVS manufacturing facility and the bikes sold in China will be exported from Chennai.Specs & CompetitionAs BMW G310RR is just a rebranded TVS Apache RR 310, all the dimensions remain the same too. It measures 2,001 mm in length, 786 mm in width, 1,135 mm in height and has a 1,365 mm long wheelbase. It tips the scale at 174 kg and has a relatively accessible 810 mm seat height. In terms of performance, it puts out 33.52 bhp of power at 9,700 RPM and 27.3 Nm of torque at 7,700 RPM. It gets a 300 mm disc at front and a 240 mm disc at the rear connected by a dual-channel ABS system. Both BMW and TVS get USD forks at front finished in gold colour and a mono-shock at the rear. But it is the TVS Apache RR 310 that gets an option to upgrade to fully adjustable front and rear suspension by WP. This upgrade, along with others, are offered under TVS’ brilliant BTO packages.BMW G310RR competes against KTM RC 390, Kawasaki Ninja 300 and TVS Apache RR 310 in India. In China, KTM still puts up a tough fight against BMW’s new baby RR. As KTM products are licensed to manufacture by CF Moto, a Chinese motorcycle manufacturing giant, in China and products like RC 390 exist. It would be interesting to see how many G 310 RR will be exported to China from India in Q2 of 2023. In related news, BMW is also expected to launch its CE 04 electric maxi-scooter in India.Source More

BMW Electric Scooter India Launch Planned – Exp Price Rs 15 Lakh

BMW CE 04 electric scooter will be a direct import hence taking the price sky-highBMW Electric ScooterBMW Motorrad is launching new vehicles to expand its motorcycle portfolio in India. The German brand aims at bringing all their motorcycles and scooters to the Indian market. Speaking about BMW scooters, we got the BMW C 400 GT maxi-scooter on our soil last year. Despite the steep price of Rs 10 lakh, it is generating good sales.BMW Group India President Vikram Pawah said that BMW C 400 GT Maxi-scooter’s success in India has led them to believe that a strong demand exists for a premium product. BMW is now planning on launching their electric scooter in India. If all goes well, the CE 04 electric maxi-scooter will be launched in India via CBU route. This electric scooter is on sale in Europe currently, which is where it is manufactured.BMW Electric Scooter CE 04One look at the BMW CE 04 electric scooter will stun you. It looks like it came straight out of a Cyberpunk movie that probably took place in 2200. BMW CE 04 has a really long wheelbase with a low ground clearance which might be a recipe for disaster for Indian roads with giant and vastly illogical speed breakers. The front windshield finished in funky orange, looks purely aesthetic and might not deflect any wind. The seats look very eye-catching and at the same time, very uncomfortable. The rider’s triangle looks very comfortable though. Sticking with the maxi-styled design, it is not a step-through scooter as the central tunnel is stuffed with batteries.BMW Electric Scooter CE 04Speaking of batteries, it has an 8.9 kWh battery pack which is more than twice as much as an Ola S1 Pro. This battery pack is essentially one module out of 11 modules found on BMW’s iX electric SUVs. Instead of designing new EV components, BMW is reusing what they already have – parts sharing is the mantra. The motor makes 42 bhp and 62 Nm and is precisely a 1/3rd section of the motor that powers BMW X1 PHEV SUV. Also, it has a 10.25” horizontal screen for instrumentation, like we have seen on BMW cars.Price & LaunchOther components include front 35mm telescopic front forks and rear off-set mono-shock mounted on a single-sided swingarm, dual disc setup at front, and single disc setup at the rear with dual-channel ABS, belt-drive and more. It is capable of 120 kph top speed and 130 km of range from a single charge and weighs a whopping 231 kg. Yikes!BMW Electric Scooter costs $11,795 (approx Rs. 9.50 lakh) for the base model and $14,180 (approx Rs. 11.42 lakh) for the top-spec variant (both prices ex-sh) in global markets. Going by import trends in India, we will get the top-spec variant and due to Indian import duties and taxes, we can see a hefty price tag of Rs. 15 lakh to 18 lakh. You can buy an imported Hayabusa for that price in India. Heck, you can even buy the newly launched Tata Nexon EV Max, for this price.New BMW Electric ScooterIf launched, BMW won’t be pitting it for regular EV buyers at all. This is for the uber-rich Indians that want to make a statement with a niche product. Looking at it from that perspective, this is an absolute gem as an expensive collection in their garage. Because it looks like a concept vehicle that one can actually buy and it doesn’t get better than that. For the mass market segment, BMW does have plans to launch entry level electric vehicles, in partnership with TVS. But that will take some time. In related news, BMW G 310 RR was launched recently too.Source More
