These are Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X. As their name suggests, Speed 400 is a street naked motorcycle and resembles Street Twin (now called Speed Twin 900) to a large extent. On the other hand, Scrambler 400X strikes a resemblance with Scrambler 900.Bajaj Auto manufactures both motorcycles in India for Triumph like it is manufacturing KTM and Husqvarna single-cylinder lineup. These are the first set of motorcycles to come out of this partnership. There will be more in the future. Most of the specifications are out, while prices are still under wraps. Let’s take a look at what they pack.Triumph Speed 400, Scrambler 400X RevealedTriumph Speed 400 & Scrambler 400X – Bri-ish bonanzaThis new TR-series 398cc engine is of prime importance with both these motorcycles. It gets DOHC and liquid-cooling setup along with a slip-and-assist clutch and ride-by-wire tech for granular throttle modulation. Performance numbers include 40 bhp of power at 8000 RPM and 37.5 Nm of torque at 6500 RPM, which brings it close to KTM 390 range’s figures.But Triumph gets its peak performance much earlier in the rev range. A 6-speed transmission does duty, even though larger 900cc twin-cylinder models still feature a 5-speed gearbox. Engine’s visual presentation like triangular engine cover bears semblance with bigger Triumph bikes too. Despite liquid cooling, it gets fins that bring in the old-world charm.Triumph Speed 400 DesignSpeaking of old-world charm, both Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X perfectly hit the neo-retro genre. Round headlight, minimal body panels, 43mm gold USD forks, mostly blacked-out engine bay with stylish silver accents, contrasting fuel tank colour look attractive. Speed 400 gets bar-end mirrors, single-tip exhaust and a single seat.Triumph Speed 400, Scrambler 400X RevealedScrambler 400X gets regular ORVMs but features a headlight grille, taller handlebar, knuckle guards, scrambler-style twin-tip exhaust and split seats. Componentry is slightly different for both. Speed 400 gets 17” alloy wheels at both ends, wrapped with Metzeler Sportec M9RR tyres, 140mm front and 130mm rear suspension travel, 300mm front disc, dual-channel ABS, 790mm seat height and more.When will they launch?Scrambler 400X gets 19” front and 17” rear wheels with Metzeler Karoo Street tyres with block pattern, 150mm suspension travel at both ends, 320mm front disc, switchable dual-channel ABS, 835mm seat height and more. Speed 400 weighs 170 kg, while Scrambler 400X weighs 179 kg. It could be powered by a liquid-cooled engine that might displace around 350-400cc. 30 bhp of power and 30 Nm of torque are likely.In the spy shots we can see a large radiator mounted ahead of its engine. Dual barrel exhaust design reminds me of the Triumph Scrambler 900. Headlights, ORVMs and turn indicators are round, except for its LED tail lights. A teardrop fuel tank with an offset fuel filler opening is immediately noticeable. A high-set front beak and a tall windscreen lend it an adventurous look.Triumph motorcycle launch on 5th July 2023Part-digital instrument clusters radiate modernity. Instrument cluster layout reminds me of Triumph’s Daytona 675, but flipped vertically. Gear position indicator, fuel economy stats, odometer, trips, time and telltale lights are likely. Bluetooth with turn-by-turn navigation will be a welcome addition.Triumph motorcycle launch on 5th July 2023Other notable elements include USD front forks, rear mono-shock, single disc brake setups at both fronts, 19” front and 17” rear alloy wheel setup (rumoured), engine protection guards, split seat setup, rear grab rails and more.     Collaborations with international brands have been on the rise in the Indian two-wheeler segment. Some examples include TVS-BMW and the recent agreement between Hero MotoCorp and Harley Davidson.
    Another notable mention is Bajaj Auto, which appears to be getting better with such collaborations. The company is already manufacturing KTM and Husqvarna bikes for both domestic and international markets. Bajaj will soon be producing bikes for British brand Triumph Motorcycles as well. Not only that, Bajaj has now taken over Triumph India operations.
    Bajaj-Triumph Motorcycle Launch Date Announced
    The JV between Bajaj and Triumph is aimed to manufacture low-cost motorcycles for the British brand to broaden its sales horizon. These new motorcycles are designed and developed entirely in the UK. Manufacturing will be handled by Bajaj. These motorcycles will be manufactured at Bajaj Auto’s new manufacturing facility in Chakan, near Pune.
    In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Rajiv Bajaj has announced the launch date of the first range of Bajaj-Triumph motorcycles. The launch will take place on Tuesday 27th June, 2023 in London. Yes, it will be a global launch event, which will be handled by Triumph. The motorcycles will be wearing Triumph branding. Take a look at the detailed interview below, from about the 8 minute mark.

    New Bajaj-Triumph motorcycles will be aimed at Indian as well as global markets. They are likely to be offered in engine options of 250cc and 400cc. Various body styles will be on offer. Some of them spied already include a roadster and a scrambler. Triumph has registered new motorcycle names – Adventurer, Hurricane and Street Tracker.
    Bajaj Triumph Motorcycles To Rival Royal Enfield
    Test mules of Bajaj-Triumph bikes have been spotted globally and even in India. A lot of design elements found on recently spotted Indian test mules match that of global ones. We’re talking about a neo-retro design language that is lifted straight from Triumph’s Street lineup. A simplistic design with funky elements gave them an old-world charm.
    For starters, there are two models being introduced, one is a neo-retro street bike and the other is a scrambler. Both models are likely to be offered with two engine options as well. One a 250cc and the other, a 400cc. Elements like USD front forks, rear mono-shock, alloy wheels, single-disc setup at both ends, round headlights and turn indicators and bar-end mirror up the retro appeal.
    Pricing & Rivals
    There are speculations in place suggesting that Bajaj-Triumph will only launch the smaller 250cc offerings in India, while 400cc offerings (or 350cc) might only be limited to global markets. Specs of these engines are not yet out, but the smaller 250cc mill should make around 30 bhp, while the larger motor might develop around 40 bhp.     Triumph Adventurer, Street Tracker, Hurricane Registered – Names For RE Rival?

    Triumph has busy days ahead, as it plans to enter multiple new markets and launch new products. The British brand is working to diversify its portfolio to include motocross bikes, electric motorcycles and smaller capacity single-cylinder bikes. The new entry-level bikes will be manufactured in India in collaboration with Bajaj. These will take on Royal Enfield in India as well as in the international markets.
    Recent trademark applications reveal that Triumph is also working to revive iconic names such as Hurricane, Adventurer and Street Tracker. Trademark applications have been filed in multiple locations such as the US, UK, Australia and Canada. A similar approach is being utilized by BSA as well, that has recently filed trademark applications for Thunderbolt, Lightning and Bantam titles.
    Triumph Hurricane can be a three-cylinder machine
    In the US, Triumph has filed a trademark application for ‘Hurricane’ title. In comparison, the trademark paperwork in UK mentions ‘Triumph Hurricane’. As trademark application has been filed in the US, it reveals that Hurricane is likely to reach production stage. That’s because new rules in the US provide trademark protection only to names that will be used in near future. It is a way to prevent entities from registering names that they don’t intend to use. It helps avoid the so-called ‘deadwood’ trademarks.
    Talking about Hurricane, the most common association is with the X-75 Hurricane. The bike was in production from 1972 to 1973. Designed by fairing specialist Craig Vetter, X-75 Hurricane used the same platform as that of Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3. X-75 Hurricane was specially designed for the US market. Interestingly, it was originally planned for launch under BSA brand. However, as the BSA factory shut down in 1972, the bike was launched as a Triumph. In production for just around a year’s time, fewer than 1,200 units were manufactured.
    Bajaj-Triumph motorcycle for India – spied
    It is likely that Triumph will use a three-cylinder setup for the resurrected Hurricane. It will also borrow quite a few of the distinctive design elements. Triumph had tried to resurrect the Hurricane title earlier also, around two decades back. However, it was a completely different machine at that time.
    It was the era of bikes like Suzuki Hayabusa and Kawasaki ZX-12R, when the focus was on horsepower and top-speed. Triumph was developing a challenger in the form of a 1,298cc four-cylinder bike, codenamed A13HC. HC was probably short for Hurricane. However, the project was eventually discontinued.
    Triumph Adventurer – a middleweight scrambler
    Trademark application for ‘Adventurer’ has been filed in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. Adventurer title has been used more than once in the past. One of the associations is with TR5T Adventurer produced during 1972 – 74. The bike utilized a 500cc twin-cylinder motor. Triumph also had Adventurer 900 triple, which was in production from 1995 to 2001. It was a cruiser based on the Thunderbird.
    In the present era, most people will associate the title ‘Adventurer’ with an adventure bike. Triumph already has multiple offerings in this space such as Tiger models in 660cc to 1,200cc range. There’s Scrambler 900 and 1200 as well in the Modern Classics range. Triumph is also working on an affordable 660cc triple that will have superior off-roading capabilities in comparison to existing Tiger Sport 660. Adventurer name could also be used for one of the new single-cylinder bikes being developed in collaboration with Bajaj.
    Street Tracker trademark filed
    Triumph could use the Street Tracker name for one of the upcoming single-cylinder bikes. It is also possible that the new bike could be based on Street Triple. Riding ergonomics will be fairly comfortable, suitable for both city commutes and highway cruising.While the platform will be the same, scrambler version will be distinguishable with features such as windscreen and knuckle guards. At rear, the bikes will have monoshock suspension. Test mules appear to be riding on 17-inch wheels at both ends, shod with relatively wider tyre at rear. Braking duties are performed by disc brakes at both ends. Dual-channel ABS will be offered as standard. Connectivity features are likely for Triumph-Bajaj sub-500cc motorcycles.Triumph-Bajaj Adventure Motorcycle RenderWhile Triumph-Bajaj new bikes seem to have potential, these are unlikely to pose any major threat to Royal Enfield. Pricing is a key factor that will determine sales volumes of these motorcycles. As of now, it’s difficult for most players to match the aggressive pricing of Royal Enfield.
