So, what are the options (irrespective of body styles) for a prospective buyer that is considering a Triumph Speed 400 at Rs. 2.2 to 2.4 lakh (ex-sh, Delhi)? Let’s take a look.1. Royal Enfield Meteor 350 – Up to Rs. 2.25 lakhImage – Being TechnozzRoyal Enfield has a slew of 350cc motorcycles and Meteor 350 is their flagship. If that is your jam and you want one with comparable performance as Speed 400, the upcoming Himalayan 450cc would be worth the wait.4. Honda CB300F – Up to Rs. 2.29 lakhHonda CB300FThis is one of the less spoken-about Honda motorcycles. It has a lot of good bits like a 293.52cc SOHC, 2V, oil-cooled engine with 24.13 bhp and 25.6 Nm. They have responded by saying that they are investigating the issue. As a fix, Triumph will be releasing the official on-road price of Speed 400. It will be communicated to all showrooms this month. Dealerships will need to follow the official on-road price. Many OEMs publish both ex-showroom and on-road prices on their website. It helps create an environment of transparency and trust.However, on-road prices will still vary from state to state. Every state has its own structure of fees and charges. In case of Triumph Speed 400, delivery charges will also vary based on the location of the customer. Triumph currently has only 15 dealerships in the country. Delivery charges will obviously be zero for anyone taking delivery at the dealership. But for customers who request home delivery, an appropriate delivery charge will be applicable.To simplify the buying experience, Triumph is working to expand its dealership network. By end of this month, 15 new outlets will become operational. The total number will reach 50 dealerships in the next two months. With the partnership with Bajaj Auto, Triumph has managed to offer a new single-cylinder lineup.But, how does this new single-cylinder engine stack up against established players in the market? That is the right question to ask. So, we compared the new 398cc engine from Bajaj-Triumph with their primary rivals from Royal Enfield, BMW-TVS, Bajaj-KTM, Jezdi-Jawa and Honda. Let’s take a look.[embedded content]Triumph New 400cc Engine – Premium single-cylinder Royal RumbleTo keep competition fair, we didn’t include Royal Enfield’s 650cc bikes as they have twin-cylinder powertrains. Right off the bat, Royal Enfield 411cc engine has a displacement advantage. Next-gen 450cc Royal Enfield engine along with Hero-Harley’s 440cc engine are not yet announced and we will include them in future posts.Both Royal Enfield 350cc and 411cc engines feature a SOHC setup along with a 2V head and come off as least technologically advanced. Honda CB350 has SOHC setup too but gets a 4V head. Also, both Honda and Royal Enfield motorcycles are air-cooled. While the rest get liquid-cooling.Triumph new 400cc engine vs rivalsIn terms of power, KTM 390 range has the edge here. With 42.9 horses, KTM leads the pack with Triumph 400 trailing behind with 40 bhp, TVS-BMW 310 with 33.52 bhp, Yezdi-Jawa with 28.7 bhp, RE 411 with 24.3 bhp, Honda CB350 with 20.78 bhp and RE 350 with 20.2 bhp. Even though KTM has power and torque advantage, Triumph’s new engine makes its peak power much earlier in the rev range.If we speak of peak power at lowest engine speeds, it is surprisingly Honda CB350. Triumph’s new engine has the edge where torque is concerned. 37.5 Nm is highest, followed by KTM’s 37 Nm, RE 411 with 32 Nm and at 27 Nm, we have RE 350 as least torquey. Also, both Royal Enfield bikes on this list and Honda CB350 get a 5-speed gearbox too.Who has the edge?Except for Royal Enfield motorcycles in this list, everyone else features a slipper clutch. TVS-BMW and Triumph 400 add ride-by-wire in the mix too, enabling granular throttle modulation. But KTM 390 range has an edge on all of these as it offers a bi-directional quick shifter, which others don’t offer even as an option.Quick shifter allows for quick clutchless shifts for spirited driving. Also, KTM 390 is the only one with cornering ABS too, but that’s not powertrain related. At the upper range, there is a tough fight between Triumph’s new 400cc unit and KTM’s 390 range. With launch of new 390 range with a larger 399cc engine, gap in performance might widen further.At the lower end, Royal Enfield 350 is the least technologically advanced powertrain when compared to its immediate rival Honda CB350. On the other hand, Scrambler 400X strikes a resemblance with Scrambler 900.Bajaj Auto manufactures both motorcycles in India for Triumph like it is manufacturing KTM and Husqvarna single-cylinder lineup. These are the first set of motorcycles to come out of this partnership. There will be more in the future. Most of the specifications are out, while prices are still under wraps. Let’s take a look at what they pack.Triumph Speed 400, Scrambler 400X RevealedTriumph Speed 400 & Scrambler 400X – Bri-ish bonanzaThis new TR-series 398cc engine is of prime importance with both these motorcycles. It gets DOHC and liquid-cooling setup along with a slip-and-assist clutch and ride-by-wire tech for granular throttle modulation. Performance numbers include 40 bhp of power at 8000 RPM and 37.5 Nm of torque at 6500 RPM, which brings it close to KTM 390 range’s figures.But Triumph gets its peak performance much earlier in the rev range. A 6-speed transmission does duty, even though larger 900cc twin-cylinder models still feature a 5-speed gearbox. Engine’s visual presentation like triangular engine cover bears semblance with bigger Triumph bikes too. Despite liquid cooling, it gets fins that bring in the old-world charm.Triumph Speed 400 DesignSpeaking of old-world charm, both Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X perfectly hit the neo-retro genre. Round headlight, minimal body panels, 43mm gold USD forks, mostly blacked-out engine bay with stylish silver accents, contrasting fuel tank colour look attractive. Speed 400 gets bar-end mirrors, single-tip exhaust and a single seat.Triumph Speed 400, Scrambler 400X RevealedScrambler 400X gets regular ORVMs but features a headlight grille, taller handlebar, knuckle guards, scrambler-style twin-tip exhaust and split seats. A smaller 250cc and a larger 400cc. Leaked spy shots give an insight into what to expect from the new Bajaj-Triumph motorcycle. The launch teaser shows that it will be a scrambler that will be first launched.Triumph motorcycle launch on 5th July 2023New Bajaj-Triumph Test Mule – The Premium Scrambler?The new test mule dons Triumph’s classic design language used on its Bonneville lineup. It could be powered by a liquid-cooled engine that might displace around 350-400cc. 30 bhp of power and 30 Nm of torque are likely.In the spy shots we can see a large radiator mounted ahead of its engine. Dual barrel exhaust design reminds me of the Triumph Scrambler 900. Headlights, ORVMs and turn indicators are round, except for its LED tail lights. A teardrop fuel tank with an offset fuel filler opening is immediately noticeable. A high-set front beak and a tall windscreen lend it an adventurous look.Triumph motorcycle launch on 5th July 2023Part-digital instrument clusters radiate modernity. Instrument cluster layout reminds me of Triumph’s Daytona 675, but flipped vertically. Gear position indicator, fuel economy stats, odometer, trips, time and telltale lights are likely.
