Jawa brand of motorcycles directly competes with Royal Enfield motorcyles in the mid-displacement segment of retro motorcyles

Classic Legends has increased prices on all its Jawa models in India namely Jawa Classic, Forty-Two and Perak. The latest price hike is applicable with immediate effect and has been implemented across all models of the said bikes. This is the second price hike since adoption of the stringent BS6 emission norms a few months back.
Price Hike of Jawa
Starting with Jawa, all variants of the retro-style classic motorcycle have witnessed an increment in their ex-showroom prices by Rs 2,987. It is offered in two variants- single-channel ABS and dual-channel ABS. The base trim with silver and grey colour variants were offered at a price of Rs Rs 1,73,164. After the latest hike in prices, it costs Rs 1,76,151.
The Maroon coloured variant of the single-channel ABS trim was previously priced Rs 1,74,228 and after the latest price revision, it is now available at Rs 1,77,215. Coming to the dual-channel variants, the black and grey colour options are now available at a price of Rs 1,85,093 as opposed to Rs 1,82,106 prior to the hike. Similarly, price of the Maroon option has been increased from Rs 1,83,170 to Rs1,86,157.
Price hike of Forty-Two, Perak
Talking about the brand entry-level model Forty-Two, price hike across all variants is constant at Rs 2987. For single-channel ABS variants, prices for Haley’s Teal and Starlight Blue colour options have increased from Rs 1,60,300 to Rs Rs 1,63,287.

Prior to the latest price hike, the Lumos Lime shade was offered at a price of Rs 1,64,164 instead of Rs 1,67,151. On the other hand, colour options such as Nebula Blue, Comet Red and Galactic Green were previously priced at Rs 1,65,228 and will now be offered at a price of Rs 1,68,215.

The company’s flagship product Perak is available in a solitary trim and will now be offered at a price of Rs 1,97,487. The bobber which recently celebrated its first anniversary in the market was previously priced at Rs 1,94,500. All prices mentioned are ex-showroom, Delhi.

Updated Forty-Two Spied
Spy shots of the updated Jawa Forty-Two surfaced on the internet recently which showed a handful of updates on the retro-modern motorcycle. It will be launched soon, and could command an even higher price.
The updated Forty-Two was seen with blacked-out mechanical components such as its engine, front and rear suspension units, exhaust pipe and headlamp bezel and turn indicator housings. Another major update is the inclusion of blacked-out alloy wheels as opposed to wire-spoke wheels offered previously. More

Classic Legends currently manufactures and retails three Jawa motorcycles in India- Jawa, Forty Two and Perak

Classic Legends has been testing its retro-styled classic motorcycle Jawa Forty Two with a pair of new alloy wheels. Currently, the bike is offered with wire-spoked wheels which are enveloped by tube tyres. The new setup might make use of tubeless tyres that are easier to repair in case of a puncture.
Changes spotted on Jawa Forty Two
It might also offer a better grip and riding experience on the road. There are no apparent changes made to the motorcycle except for the addition of a single-piece grab rail and a short flyscreen although it is yet to be seen whether these are offered as standard or as optional add-on accessories.
Also, the manufacturer seems to have done away with some chrome elements that have been replaced by blacked-out components such as its front and rear suspension setup, exhaust pipe and black headlamp bezel as well as indicator housings.
Stitching on the seat also seems to be different. One might expect Jawa to also improve its seat quality since many consumers have complained about Forty Two’s seat size and quality especially for the pillion.

Powertrain Specs
If one takes a closer peek, they can spot a little reservoir where its rear suspension is mounted onto the bike’s frame. Apart from these, there are no other noticeable changes made on Forty Two. In all probability, it is also likely to retain the same powertrain. In its BS6 avatar, it is powered by a 293cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine that churns out 27 bhp and 27.05 Nm of peak torque. It is paired with a six-speed gearbox. It retailed in two variants- single-channel ABS and dual-channel ABS.
The test mule seen on the latest set of spy shots is most probably the dual-channel ABS derivative. It is currently offered at a price bracket of Rs 1.65 lakh to Rs 1.74 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom).
While details on the updated classic roadster are still very thin, we can expect this tyre setup to also find its way to other Jawa offerings such as Jawa Classic and Perak. Expect this new update Forty Two to make its debut in a few weeks time.
Jawa Forty Two Rivals
Competition in the retro motorcycle has been intensified ever since the launch of Honda H’Ness CB350 and Royal Enfield Meteor 350 late last year. While the former is a naked commuter roadster, the latter is sort of a cruiser.
Both motorcycles are powered by 350cc single-cylinder motors and are paired to a five-speed gearbox. While CB350 kicks out 21 bhp and 30 Nm of peak torque, the engine on Meteor 350 produces 20.2 bhp and 27 Nm of peak torque.

Jawa, Forty Two and Perak will undergo a price hike in view of rising input costs and commodity prices

As is generally noted at the start of each year, January 2021 will also see hike in prices of cars and two wheelers. Hero MotoCorp has announced a price hike by around Rs.1,500 from 1st January 2021 while Kia, Hyundai, Maruti and Mahindra have also made similar announcements. OEMs generally introduce price hike between 1-3 percent, but this year the hike is expected to be higher as the automakers decide to pass on higher input costs to the consumer.
Mahindra-owned news website Car and Bike has announced in an exclusive report that Mahindra’s subsidiary, Classic Legends Private Limited will be hiking prices for the Jawa motorcycles from January 2021; though the quantum of price hike is yet to be announced.
The price hike will span the Jawa, Jawa Forty Two and the Perak as the company also cites rising input costs and commodity prices as reasons for this price hike, a portion of which will now be passed on to the consumer.
Quantum of Price Hike
The quantum of price hike across the Jawa range has not yet been revealed. As on date Classic Legends sells the Jawa at Rs.1.73-1.83 lakhs, the Jawa Forty Two at from Rs.1.60-1.74 lakhs and the top of the line Jawa Perak at Rs.1.94 lakhs. Apart from the price hike, these bikes will not see any modifications either in design or in engine specifications.

The Jawa and Jawa Forty Two get powered by a BS6 compliant 292 cc, single cylinder, 4 stroke DOHC engine offering 26.51 hp power and 27.05 Nm torque mated to a 6 speed gearbox. The third motorcycle model under the Jawa brand name, Perak which is the most affordable, made-in-India factory custom bobber, gets a 334cc, single cylinder, 4 stroke engine making 30.64 hp power and 32.74 Nm torque mated to a 6 speed gearbox.
Rising Cost of Ownership
Over the past year, it has also been noted that there is a distinct increase in cost of ownership of automobiles. Higher insurance premiums, BS6 upgrades and a higher trajectory in fuel prices have all put an increased burden on the consumer.
Jawa has noted sales to the extent of 50,000 units during the April 2019 to November 2020 period. This also includes the lockdown period till around July 2020. The company announced this milestone achievement in 24 months of full operation which excluded the suspension of operations during the months of March to July 2020 when the company had zero inventory.
This growing demand has caused the company to increase both production capacities and dealership count across the country with a target to register sales of the next 50,000 in less than a year. In the recent months, it is the Perak which has been the best selling Jawa motorcycle.

Jawa Perak is powered by a 334cc, single cylinder, 4 stroke, liquid cooled, DOHC engine

Classic Legends, the Mahindra owned company which sells the the Jawa, Forty-Two and Perak motorcycles, has announced a new delivery milestone today. For the first time, the company has recorded deliveries of 2,000 units of Perak in oct 2020. In fact, this is the first time Jawa has delivered 2k units of any of their 3 motorcycles on offer, in a month.
Majority of these 2k Perak units were sold during the second half of October, which included the festivals of Dusshera and Navartri. The company now expects better sales of the Jawa Perak with Diwali around the corner.
Deliveries of the Jawa Perak commenced in July this year. It is the most expensive model in the company lineup, priced at Rs.1.94 lakhs, ex-sh. Classic Legends has only disclosed delivery numbers of the Perak and not of the Jawa and Forty Two. Hence its sales performance can neither be compared to earlier months and nor can it be assessed as against that of its competitors.
Taking into account total sales of Jawa in the July, August, September period, it can be noted that sales are on a steady rise. Sales which had stood at 569 units in July increased to 1,353 units in August and then on to 2,121 units in September 2020. Though the company has not disclosed October sales of the Jawa and Jawa Forty Two, they state that both these models have seen steady sales and increased demand that has overshot production supplies.

The Jawa and Forty Two share the same 293cc, single cylinder, 4 stroke, liquid cooled, DOHC engine that offers 26.5 hp power and 20.05 Nm torque mated to a 6 speed gearbox. The Jawa is priced between Rs.1.74-1.83 lakhs while the Forty Two is priced from Rs.1.65-1.74 lakhs. The Perak gets a more powerful 334cc, single cylinder, 4 stroke, liquid cooled, DOHC engine that makes 30.64 hp power and 32.74 Nm torque mated to a 6 speed gearbox.
The company expects to see increased sales through the month of November promising increased production at the Pithampur plant and quicker deliveries while the company is also in the process of enhancing its dealership network across India. Jawa currently has 163 dealerships across India which it intends to increase to 205 dealerships by the end of this year.
The month of October also saw Jawa motorcycles launched in Nepal. The Jawa showroom is located at Uttardhoka and Teku locations of Kathmandu with Agni Motoinc Pvt Ltd, as the company’s official distributor partner in Nepal. Sales commence with the Jawa and Jawa 42 with the Jawa Perak to also be introduced soon. The bikes will be imported into the country via the Completely Built Units (CBU) route.
