New Honda Electric Bikes For Entry Level Segment – Debuts

Honda is stepping up focus on expanding its EV portfolio, as part of its goal to become carbon neutral by 2050New Honda Electric Bike – Zoomer EIn the initial phase of its EV roadmap, Honda will be launching at least 10 electric two-wheelers globally by 2025. EV sales target is set at one million units by 2027. By the end of this decade, Honda EV sales will be around 3.5 million units. However, ICE-based models will continue to be the mainstay for Honda in this decade. By 2030, EV sales will contribute just around 15% of Honda’s total sales. Making a complete shift to electric is a ginormous task that needs to be executed in a planned, phased manner.Honda new electric bikes unveiledHonda has showcased some of its new electric bikes, which include Cub e, Dax e and Zoomer e. These are based on their respective petrol-powered counterparts. China is the first market to get these new e-bikes. Honda’s initial EV strategy seems similar to that of other OEMs, wherein existing petrol-powered machines are being fitted with electric powertrains. This approach is being preferred, as it saves development costs and reduces time-to-market.Honda’s electric cubs look super cute, which makes them an appropriate choice for Gen Z. There’s greater acceptance for EVs among the young generation and Honda is ensuring that multiple options are available. Honda’s new e-bikes have a minimalistic design and are built for utility. These are best suited for short sprints across city streets.New Honda Electric Bike – Dax EIn many global markets, Honda’s new entry-level electric bikes may not require a driving licence. That’s because top speed is limited to 15 mph (approx. 24 kmph). Range will apparently be less in comparison to standard electric bikes, but it won’t be a problem with options like fast charging and battery swapping. Moreover, Cub e, Dax e and Zoomer e are all equipped with pedals. Even if the batteries run out for any reason or in case of other malfunction, the bikes can be used as a bicycle. Their lightweight profile ensures that users won’t have to huff and puff to run them on human power. The idea is pretty similar to Kinetic Luna that also had pedals for emergency use.Honda EV plans for IndiaIt is not certain if Honda electric cubs will be launched in India. Instead of experimenting, Honda appears to have taken a safer approach for Indian market. Honda’s first electric two-wheeler for India will be Activa Electric that is planned for launch in January 2024. This has been confirmed by Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) MD and CEO Atsushi Ogata.New Honda Electric Bike – Cub EActiva electric scooter will have a top speed of 50 kmph. This is quite less in comparison to current industry average of around 80-100 kmph. Range of Activa electric has not been disclosed, but it should be enough for everyday needs. After Activa electric, which is essentially a retrofit project, Honda will launch its first born-electric bike in India. It will come with all the bells and whistles, as expected from a modern electric scooter. Honda is most likely to offer swappable battery tech to eliminate the hassles of range anxiety. The company will be targeting increased localization, so that their electric scooters could be launched at a competitive price point. More

Honda Hawk 11 Cafe Racer Patented In India – Launch Planned?

Based on the same 1086 cc parallel-twin engine as Africa Twin, Honda Hawk 11 churns out around 100 bhp power and 104 Nm torqueNew Honda Hawk 11 Cafe Racer. Image – AutoByHonda motorcycles currently have 4 big bikes in its portfolio as listed on its Big Wing website. CB500X was taken offline, added back and now taken offline again. CBR-1000RR-R Fireblade has been added back too, which was off-site for a very long time. Now, there is CBR650R, Fireblade, Africa Twin and Gold Wing.As far as sales are concerned, Honda sold zero big bikes in India in December 2022. With Kawasaki’s aggressive pricing strategy, Team Green is taking over Team Blue and Team Red. In fact, Suzuki does a lot better in this regard with Hayabusa and Katana.Honda Hawk 11 Cafe RacerHonda has patented a new big bike in India. It is Hawk 11 and is based on the same 1082 cc parallel-twin platform as Africa Twin. Hawk 11 is a neo retro-themed cafe-racer motorcycle. Is Honda launching this motorcycle in India? If so, can this be the one to etch Honda’s name in sales charts more? Let’s take a look. This cool-looking cafe racer motorcycle was first showcased by Honda at the 2022 Osaka Motorcycle Show. This is the spiritual successor of CB1100 Roadster which is now discontinued in Honda’s global portfolio. It is interesting to note that just a few months after its debut, Honda filed a patent for Hawk 11 motorcycle.New Honda Hawk 11 Cafe Racer patented in IndiaThe patent has been filed on 2nd of August 2022, just around 4 months after global premiere. This might be a hint that a launch is imminent and Honda has reserved its interests for India. Or Honda just casually patented it in India to maybe launch it someday if market demands exist. We would wager on the latter as Honda has quite a few patents in India that never materialised. The looks are to die for as it pays tribute to cafe racers of yesteryear while donning modern design language. There is a circular LED headlight at the front enclosed in a bikini fairing. Round ORVMs extend beyond the width of its clip-on handlebars. There is a stubby sub-frame and a slightly exposed frame from within bodywork. Componentry includes front USD forks, dual disc setup at front, alloy wheels, tubeless tyres, and more. Exhaust is rather chunky and angles upwards at a similar angle as its subframe.Specs & FeaturesIt is based on the same 1082 cc parallel-twin engine kicking out around 100 bhp of power at 7500 RPM and 104 Nm of torque at 6250 RPM. It gets liquid cooling, a 6-speed gearbox and other equipment expected at this price point. Honda Hawk 11 is the third bike based on this platform after Africa Twin and NT1100. The latter is also reserved for India, which never materialised.New Honda Hawk 11 Cafe RacerIn JDM, Honda Hawk 11 costs 13,97,000 Yen which roughly translates to Rs. 8.94 lakh. If Honda premium tax in India and other Indian duties are considered, we can expect pricing over Rs. 12 lakh. There is another ‘blast from the past’ motorcycle like Honda Hawk 11 currently enjoying a niche at this price point. It is a Suzuki Katana. Both Katana and Hawk 11 are neo-retro motorcycles with bikini fairing. If Honda wants to pit a handsome opponent to rival Katana, Hawk 11 is the fitting choice. Launch is not confirmed by HMSI yet. Honda Activa Petrol To Electric Conversion At Rs 1 Lakh – Range 120 Km

As per the modder, this electric Activa conversion has a 2.88 kWh worth of prismatic cell battery costing Rs. 55,000Electric Activa Conversion Costs 1 Lakh – 2.88 kWh BatteryActiva is currently the de facto choice in the scooter segment for a majority in the segment. With 6 generations of legacy and a fan following, Activa has come a long way. Don’t let the sub 1 lakh units sold in December 2022 fool you. Activa is notoriously known to dominate the scooter segment with 50% of market share.HMSI CEO has confirmed recently that its maiden electric scooter will launch in January 2024. With still a year on the clock, Activa fans eagerly waiting for an electric scooter might be disappointed. However, there is no one stopping them from converting their existing Activa to electric, though. Yes. There are many kits, but let’s take a look at a neat conversion done in Nellore, AP.Honda Activa Petrol To ElectricA modder from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh running a YouTube channel Diy Tech.in Telugu, has neatly converted a standard ICE Activa into an EV. All the modifications come together beautifully and look cohesive. Except for a few green decals and EV stickers, people would be hard-pressed to spot that it is converted. The modder has worked on an older generation Honda Activa and swapped the engine to house an electric battery. Propulsion is achieved by a hub motor, mounted at the rear wheel. According to modder, this motor is rated at 1 kW of continuous power and 2 to 2.5 kW of peak power as well. While the battery is a 72V 40A unit with prismatic cells. This works to be 2.88 kWh worth of capacity.[embedded content][embedded content]The modder promises a range of over 120 km from a single charge. While top speed is limited to 55 km/h. Modder explains that there is a smart BMS (Battery Management System) on board and a full sine wave smart motor controller. The latter contributes to a vibe-free motor operation. The “smart” in smart BMS enables smartphone connectivity to display various vehicular info. The motor controller comes with three speeds that can be cycled through via a custom switch. There is a parking mode switch too, which cuts power to motor, when engaged. Indications for both of these are displayed in the fully digital instrument cluster.Specs & FeaturesThis Electric Activa conversion swaps the analog instrumentation of stock Activa with a fully digital unit. It displays a tonne of info including motor RPM as well. Since there is no need for an engine starter motor, the starter switch is now converted to a horn.Honda Activa Petrol to Honda Activa Electric – ModificationEngine on stock Activa is mounted on its swingarm. A new swingarm with dual shock absorbers was necessary. Stock Activa gets a single-sided mono-shock. Battery compartment and boot space were not revealed, but the charging point is mounted near footboard. As per modder, this whole conversion costs Rs. 1 lakh including base vehicle. Batteries alone command more than half of that price. An overnight charge is sufficient as per this modder to conserve battery health and he doesn’t often recommend fast charging. Icing on the cake for people opting for this conversion is a 3-year warranty on its battery. More

New Honda Motorcycle To Rival Splendor – Patent Design Leaks (Flex Fuel?)

A space between Splendor and HF Deluxe is likely where Honda’s new budget commuter will fall in terms of pricingNew Honda Motorcycle To Rival SplendorHonda Motorcycles & Scooters India (HMSI) has utter dominance in scooter segment. Thanks to its ever-popular Activa range, Honda has kept scooter sales charts under its grasp and is likely to stay that way for a long time. With motorcycles, Honda has an entry-level offering called CB Shine. It is the second highest-seller for HMSI and highest-seller when Honda’s motorcycle range is considered. Where the Indian motorcycle market is taken into account, it is Hero MotoCorp that absolutely decimates the competition.New Honda Motorcycle To Rival SplendorSplendor is the one to beat in India with 2.25 lakh units sold last month while Honda Shine was at No 2 behind Splendor and HF Deluxe with 87k units sold. Honda has been reportedly working on a new budget commuter. Now, the Japanese brand has patented a new design in India in that regard. Let’s take a look.Looking at the design patent, one can immediately say that it has been built to be priced aggressively in the entry segment. Even with budget commuter standards. As of now, the name of this upcoming motorcycle is not known. That said, it bears semblance with CG Dream series of budget commuters that is sold in underdeveloped markets like Pakistan.New Honda Motorcycle To Rival SplendorSpeaking of Pakistan, Honda offers a CG 125 Dream with spoked wheels. In India, HMSI is likely to plonk a 110cc engine that currently does duty in CD 110 Dream. Honda’s entry-level offering CD 110 Dream is currently not doing well against Hero Splendor despite offering a larger 110cc engine as opposed to 100cc and matching the price too. There can be an attempt by Honda to offer a 125cc motorcycle with spoked wheels and barebones functionality and match Splendor Plus’ Rs. 71.5K price point. This way, Honda can expect to push more volumes and grab some of Splendor’s pie. There is a third possibility of offering a new 100cc engine and going toe-to-toe with Splendor Plus which gets a 100cc engine as well and even undercuts the latter in pricing. By going this route, HMSI can bring a contender to rival Hero HF Deluxe which is the 4th highest-selling motorcycle in India and is priced at an absolute steal at Rs. 55K.Flex Fuel?Even though it is very early in the time frame for speculating a flex-fuel offering, it is a possibility. We say this because Honda’s new budget commuter which is patented in India has an unusually large engine casing for a budget commuter motorcycle. But it looks like the engine casing is extending beyond its cradle frame. This is unusual for a budget motorcycle with just a 100-125cc engine unless it is holding additional equipment for flex-fuel tech. Notable features include a double cradle chassis, telescopic front forks and twin shock absorbers at the rear, a single-piece seat, and spoked wheels. When launched this year, Honda’s new budget commuter will take on Hero HF Deluxe and Splendor Plus. A price bracket of around Rs. 60-70k is likely to be a logical bet for this upcoming motorcycle. Honda Activa Electric Scooter Launch In Jan 2024 – CEO Confirms

Arriving late on the scene shouldn’t be a problem for a brand like Activa that is widely preferred for its reliability and peppy performanceImage for illustration purposeHonda recently launched Activa H-Smart variant that comes with a new advanced handsfree system with car-like keyless features. At the event, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) MD and CEO Atsushi Ogata also revealed the company’s EV roadmap. As was being anticipated, Honda’s first EV for India will be the electric version of its bestselling Activa scooter. According to Ogata, Activa Electric will debut at the same time next year, that is Jan 2024. It will be interesting to see if Activa Electric can achieve the same level of popularity as that of its ICE-based counterpart.Activa Electric battery, top speedWhile most new launches in electric two-wheeler space are aiming to beat their closest competitors in terms of range, top speed, performance specs, etc., Activa Electric appears to be following an entirely different approach. Activa Electric will be focusing more on reliability. It will have a top speed of 50 kmph, which is much below the prevailing industry average of around 80-100 kmph.Activa Electric will be essentially a transplant job. It appears that Honda is planning to play it safe, so as to avoid any negative developments. EV tech is new and considerable time has to be spent on testing to ensure everything works out in a smooth, safe manner. Activa Electric will have a fixed battery setup, which will reduce the risk of incidents like fire caused by mishandling.Honda Activa Electric will be similar in design to current Activa petrol scooter.Visually, Activa Electric will be largely the same as current ICE-based Activa. Hardware such as suspension and braking setup could also be shared to keep costs down. Activa Electric range is likely to be modest, especially in comparison to the likes of Hero Vida V1 Pro that has a certified range of 165 km.Honda electric scooter with swappable batteryAfter Activa electric, Honda has plans to launch another electric scooter in India. This will be based on an entirely new born-electric platform. It will be a mainstream EV product and have capabilities similar to that of existing bestselling electric scooters in the market. As compared to Activa Electric, Honda’s second electric scooter in India will have a swappable battery system.Honda has set a target to open battery-swapping stations across most of its consumer touchpoints in the country before launching its second EV. With more than 6000 battery swapping stations, Honda’s second EV will not be impacted by issues like range anxiety. Ownership cost can also be reduced if Honda could provide subscription-based plans that do not include the cost of battery. While Honda’s progress in EV space may seem slow, there are valid reasons for the delay. Ogata said that they could have easily taken their EVs from China and introduced them in India. However, that’s not the case.Honda is focusing on developing India-specific products and achieving a high level of localization. Even parts like battery packs and e-motor, which are usually imported, are expected to be sourced locally. Much of Honda’s investments in FY 2023-’24 will be allocated towards setting up EV manufacturing facilities and related infrastructure. Honda has already setup a subsidiary in India which will manufacture battery packs.Even though Honda will be entering the EV space soon, Ogata says that conventional ICE-based scooters will continue to dominate. In the foreseeable future, much of Honda’s sales will be from its ICE-based two-wheelers. Its first EV Activa Electric will target users with limited running. For more frequent use and longer distances, ICE Activa will continue to be the preferred choice. More

Honda Activa Smart Key Launch Price Rs 80k – Car Like Keyless Features

One of the key highlights of Activa Smart is an advanced security system that has been trademarked as ‘H-Smart’Honda Activa Smart Key LaunchIndia’s largest selling scooter, Honda Activa has received generational updates and other features at regular intervals. Special editions have also been launched from time to time.In 2023, Honda has launched Activa Smart variant. Featuring an advanced security system, this new variant of Activa is best suited for folks who face a higher risk of their vehicle being stolen. People who park their vehicle in open parking or on the streets can significantly reduce the risk of theft with Activa Smart variant.Honda Activa Smart Key – Remote FunctionsActiva Smart Key functions are similar to the ones we see in cars these days. With the smart key in range, you can unlock the scooter, start the scooter, access boot space, open the fuel lid – without removing the key from your pocket. It also has an auto-lock function. Once the smart key goes away from the range, Activa Smart will lock itself. Smart Key Activa variant also gets new alloys and a new colour option.Apart from these features, it improves overall security of Activa. Vehicle theft is a global phenomenon and not limited to any specific geography. It’s only the number of thefts that varies from region to region. Honda bikes are popular across the globe, which makes them one of the preferred targets for vehicle thieves. For its premium bikes like CBR650R, CB650R and CRF1100L Africa Twin, Honda already has an advanced security platform named Honda Ignition Security System (HISS). H-Smart is a low-cost version of HISS, specially designed to be used for Honda’s entry-level two-wheelers.Honda Activa Smart Key Variant PriceH-Smart is difficult to crack, as it utilizes a contact-based mechanism to open the lock. This is different from the standard remote keyless system that utilizes radio signals to communicate the commands such as lock and unlock. Although the radio signals are secure, they can still be cracked by advanced scanning devices. As Honda’s H-Smart utilizes a contact-based mechanism to match the code, it is difficult to copy or replicate in real time.H-Smart also makes things easier and hassle-free for users. It is automatically activated, as soon as the key is taken out from the scooter. Of course, the handle lock is still there, which will continue to function as the first level of security. As vehicle thefts are quite rampant, Activa’s H-Smart security platform can emerge as a preferred option among consumers. As it is highly relevant from a practical perspective, other Honda two-wheelers will also get this feature. Even other OEMs could introduce similar features with their respective models. Take a look at the official TVC below. When the smart key is in range, it shows on instrument consoleHonda Activa Smart engine, specsPerformance numbers are largely the same as earlier. Activa Smart is powered by a 109.51 cc motor that generates 7.85 PS of max power and 8.84 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to an automatic transmission. Activa has an underdone frame with telescopic front forks and 3-step adjustable spring loaded hydraulic rear suspension. It has 12-inch front and 10-inch rear wheels, with 130 mm drum brakes at both ends.Dimensionally, there are no changes to Activa Smart variant. It is 1833 mm long, 697 mm wide, 1156 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 1260 mm. There’s only a slight difference in weight, with Activa Smart being 1kg lighter than the standard variant that weighs 280 kg (GVW). More

New Honda Activa Smart Variant Details Leak – Homologated Before Launch

Honda Two Wheeler India is getting ready to launch a new Activa variant called Activa Smart on 23rd Jan 2023Image for illustration purpose.Honda Activa is the best-selling scooter of India. It is also one of the most stolen scooters. Even though tech has become a lot smarter, professional thieves still find a way to beat the system. From simply breaking the handle lock to hacking advanced code based anti-theft devices, it’s an everyday routine for professional thieves.A 100% safe system may never be possible, so the best hope is to develop anti-theft devices that are harder to crack. Honda appears to be doing just that with its H-Smart anti-theft system. H-Smart featured Honda Activa Smart will be launched on January 23rd. It has been homologated, revealing new details.New Honda Activa Smart VariantHonda had filed an application to trademark ‘H-Smart’ in India in December 2022, which has been approved. As per the trademark description, H-Smart is listed as ‘anti-theft systems for two-wheeled vehicles’. This makes it clear what H-Smart is all about and where it is intended to be used. However, exact details of how it works and costs involved will be revealed at the time of launch. The first Honda vehicle to get this new safety feature will be Activa. Honda Activa Smart variant has been officially homologated with the ministry. Specs are same, what has changed is the gross vehicle weight for the Smart variant has reduced to 279 kgs, instead of 280 kgs for other Activa variant.Honda Activa Smart Variant Homologated Before LaunchH-Smart may be a necessity rather than a marketing gimmick, as vehicle thefts are rampant across the country. Even in international locations, vehicle thefts are widely reported. In a study that analysed vehicle theft data in the national capital region between 2011 and 2020, it was found that Honda Activa was the second most stolen two-wheeler in the city. H-Smart can probably change that by making Activa harder to steal. Most stolen two-wheeler in Delhi-NCR was Hero Splendor, whereas Bajaj Pulsar, Royal Enfield Classic 350 and TVS Apache were 3rd, 4th and 5th in the list, respectively. Most of these bikes are yet to have a dedicated anti-theft system. Honda H-Smart could probably work as a pioneering initiative, something that other OEMs could replicate in near future.Honda H-Smart – How it works?Although technical details have not been revealed, Honda H-Smart could be a low-cost version of Honda Ignition Security System (HISS). The latter is already offered with premium Honda bikes such as CBR650R, CB650R and CRF1100L Africa Twin. HISS utilizes a microchip embedded key and has a code that can only be read by the ECU. The bike will start only if the code matches.Honda H-Smart trademark filed in IndiaAs compared to other similar systems, the coded password utilized by HISS cannot be stolen by an external device or antenna. In conventional code-based systems, thieves often break into the code with the use of advanced scanners. This is not possible with HISS, as it utilizes a contact-based mechanism. Duplicating the key will also not help, as the code inside the microchip needs to match.HISS is easy to use, as it is automatically enabled when the key is removed from the bike. So, no issues about forgetting to turn on a switch or something of that sort. H-Smart could have similar features, which will help protect Honda’s smaller capacity bikes and scooters. More
