2023 Tata Tiago EV Vs Petrol Hatchbacks – i20, Baleno

When looked at a distance of 1,00,000 km, EVs come out to be significantly economical even before no-maintenance advantages kick inGasoline Cars Vs Electric Cars Under Rs. 10 LakhTata has pulled off quite a feat when it comes to 2023 Tiago EV. At Rs. 8.5 lakh (ex-sh), Tiago EV is likely to be the torch bearer for affordable EVs to follow in the future. As far as competition is concerned, Tiago EV is unrivaled. Until the Citroen C3 electric makes its appearance known.Mahindra has set its interests in electric SUVs with its EV portfolio starting from XUV400. MG is the only other possible entrant in the near future in this affordable EV space after Citroen. We have seen Air EV test mules on Indian soil too. However, it begs the question of how economical 2023 Tiago EV can be over petrol-powered hatchbacks like i20 and Baleno? With a Rs. 10 lakh budget, should you buy a Tiago EV? Or should you just buy a Baleno or an i20 instead? Let’s take a closer look.2023 Tiago EVFor starters, Tiago EV’s Rs. 8.5 lakh sticker price is introductory and is for base XE trim and goes till 11.79 lakh for XZ Plus Tech LUX Long Range Fast Charger. While Baleno starts from Rs. 6.42 lakh and goes till Rs. 9.60 lakh. i20 steers towards the pricey end of hatchback spectrum with prices starting from Rs. 7.07 lakh and goes till Rs. 11.62 lakh (all prices ex-sh).But for the sake of this comparo, we are taking automatic variants only as Tiago EV is also an automatic. Fair game! Right from the get-go, 2023 Tiago EV saves bucks as it is not subjected to RTO taxes. While the other two are. In effect, Tiago EV on-road pricing starts at around Rs. 9 lakh, Baleno’s cheapest automatic variant around Rs. 9.4 lakh and i20’s cheapest automatic is around Rs. 10.7 lakh.Tata Tiago EV PricesAlso, Tiago EV borrows 4-star crash safety from petrol Tiago, i20 gets a 3-star crash safety while Baleno is still not tested. Previous generation Baleno scored 0-star crash rating when tested by Latin NCAP. Disclaimer: On-road prices are for Karnataka state, which has among the highest RTO taxes in the country.Economy of EV vs Gasoline2023 Tata Tiago EV is offered in two battery pack options. A 19.2 kWh pack and a larger 24 kWh pack. Also, i20 is offered with a diesel option. To keep the comparo sportive, we will take a medium range Tiago EV and only petrol i20 which fit into the economics of a sub Rs. 10 lakh car which is likely to be most customers’ first-ever buy.Maruti Suzuki Baleno Delta AGS is powered by a 1.2L 4-cylinder engine that promises 22.9 km/l. Hyundai i20 Sportz 1.0 Turbo iMT gets a 1.0L 3-cylinder turbo unit that promises 20.2 km/l. Tiago EV XE Medium Range promises 250 km from its 19.2 kWh battery. If we take best case scenario, Baleno consumes 4,366 litres of petrol to cover 1,00,000 km. While i20 consumes 4,950 litres of petrol.Coming to Tiago EV, it takes 400 charge cycles to cover 1,00,000 km. In Karnataka, a unit (1 kWh) costs Rs. 4.05 for the first 50 units, Rs. 5.55 for the next 50 units, Rs. 7.1 for the next 100 units and Rs. 8.15 over 200 units consumed. On average, it can be taken for Rs. 6.21 per unit consumed. 2023 Tiago EV consumes 7,680 units from the wall to travel 1,00,000 km.When translated to running costs, 2023 Tiago EV costs Rs. 47,692 to cover 1,00,000 km. Baleno costs Rs. 4,47,471 and i20 costs Rs. 5,07,325 to cover the same distance (Petrol price – Rs. 102.49, Karnataka, 29th September, 2022). Not to mention, Tiago EV only needs wear and tear parts like tyres, brake pads, discs, AC filters and a few others while Baleno and i20 need oil change, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, clutch kits, timing kits periodically on top of Tiago EV’s maintenance parts.Electric Car Or Petrol Car?If you drive 10,000 km a year, and own a car for 10 years accounting to 1,00,000 kms, 2023 Tiago EV may turn out more economical than gasoline-powered Baleno and i20. Total ownership cost (vehicle cost on road + running cost) excluding maintenance for 1,00,000 km for Tiago EV XE Medium Range turns out to be around Rs. 9.5 lakh. While for Baleno Delta AGS, it is around Rs. 13.9 lakh and for i20 Sportz 1.0 Turbo iMT, it is around Rs. 15.8 lakh. These numbers are derived from taking the manufacturer’s best-case scenario numbers and might vary in real life. Also, Baleno and i20 come with manual transmission options that come at a lower price point. If factored in maintenance costs associated with gasoline-powered cars, EVs deliver a very attractive proposition for a select segment of buyers. But there is one big gripe with EVs, especially in India. Which is the lack of robust charging infrastructure. Gasoline-powered cars can be refueled in a minute which almost feels like magic, in comparison. More

Tata Tiago Electric Launch Price Rs 8.49 L – Range Up To 315 Kms

Both Tiago Electric and Tigor Electric were showcased at 2018 Auto Expo, but Tiago EV was put on the backburner due to prevailing market dynamicsTata Tiago Electric LaunchedWhile quite a few electric cars are expected to be launched in near future, OEMs don’t seem to be particularly interested in targeting the entry-level EV space. There were expectations earlier with Maruti that was working on electric version of WagonR. However, that plan has been shelved. Homegrown carmaker Mahindra has also made it clear that it will focus on electric SUVs and not target the budget segment.Sensing an opportunity that also comes with considerable risks, Tata Motors has launched an electric version of Tiago hatchback today. Tiago EV has been launched a starting price of Rs 8.49 lakh and goes all the way to Rs 11.79 lakh. These are ex-sh, introductory prices which are valid for first 10,000 buyers. Booking start on 10th October, 2022. Deliveries start from Jan 2023.Tata Tiago Electric LaunchedTata Tiago Electric PricesA total of 7 trim options and two battery packs are on offer with new Tiago EV. Prices of these are Rs 8.49 lakh and Rs 9.09 lakh, ex-sh.Remaining 5 versions are on offer with 24 kWh battery pack which offer claimed range of 315 kms. These are XT, XZ+, XZ+ Tech Lux with 3.3 kW AC charger, and XZ+ and XZ+ Tech Lux with 7.2 kW AC charger. Prices of these versions range from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 11.79 lakh, ex-sh.Tata Tiago EV PricesTiago EV will borrow much of its internals from Tigor EV. Some adjustments may be needed in accommodating the battery pack, as Tiago is around 200 mm shorter than Tigor EV. As compared to Nexon EV that utilizes a one-piece battery pack, Tigor EV has a split battery setup. One unit is placed under the rear seat, whereas the second unit is positioned in the boot.Tata Tiago EVTiago EV is offered in a choice of two battery packs. These are 19.2 kWh and 24 kWh. The former claims to deliver an estimated range of 250 kms while the latter claims 315 kms on full charge.Tiago EV can perform in varying conditions and environments, as it has dedicated liquid cooling system and IP67 rated motor and battery pack. Users can choose Drive or Sports mode, as per requirement. Tiago EV has gradeability of 29% and it can accelerate from 0-60 kmph in 5.7 seconds.Tata Tiago EV LaunchedTiago EV range and featuresIt is loaded with tech. Tiago EV gets features such as smart regenerative braking, hill ascent assist and hill descent assist. Warranty for battery pack and motor is 8 years/1.60 lakh km (whichever is earlier), which is the same as offered with Tigor EV. The battery pack has been tested for nail penetration, crush test, overcharge protection, shock protection and short circuit protection.Tiago EV vs Rival ICE cars – Maruti Swift (MSS), Maruti Baleno (MSB), Hyundai i20 (Hi2), Maruti Brezza (MSB)On the safety front, Tiago has received 4-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests. This will be applicable for Tiago EV as well. Key safety features will include corner stability control and ABS with EBD. If new safety rules are enforced, Tiago EV could get 6-airbags as standard. With no rivals in entry-level electric car segment, Tata Motors can get the first mover advantage with Tiago EV. More

2023 Tata Altroz Spied Testing With Camo – Electric Or Facelift?

Tata Altroz is the safest premium hatchback in the country followed by Jazz, i20 and Baleno2023 Tata Altroz Spied Testing – Single Tone AlloysTata Motors was shooting for gold when it launched Altroz in India. Hence they call it the gold standard in premium hatchback segment. Altroz makes a very compelling case if you ask us. It has one of a kind, 90-degree opening doors, it has all the features and creature comforts one can expect from this segment. It even looks good too and to top it all off, it scores 5-stars in Global NCAP crash test which is pretty much unrivalled in the segment. Tata even took a dig at i20 and Baleno calling them tricks while it is the real treat. But last time we checked, Baleno is currently the highest-selling car of any segment in India. i20 makes it to top 10 hatchbacks list.Tata needs to do something to spruce up this segment. In that regard, we recently received new spy shots of 2023 Altroz currently being tested on road. But what can it be? Altroz CNG, Altroz EV or Altroz Facelift? Let’s take a closer look.2023 Tata Altroz SpiedHat tip to automotive enthusiast Rajeesh Kumar for sharing these exclusive spy shots on Rushlane Spylane. It is likely to be a model year 2023 Altroz and is fully camouflaged. Altroz CNG is being under testing since 2021 and just last month, we even spied an Altroz CNG with emission testing equipment. But this new test mule isn’t equipped with emission testing gear.2023 Tata Altroz Spied Testing – Rear ProfileSo, what is it then? It could be a facelift of the current Altroz. We say this because Altroz has been on sale since January 2020. Which is 2.5 years ago and has not gotten a single update since launch. It got a Dark Edition option and that’s it. But, i20 and especially Baleno trailing way ahead of Altroz. Hence, Tata is likely to launch a facelift to re-establish interests around its gold standard and drive sales further.Coming to the test mule in question, it seems to be the top-trim as it gets rear defogger and rear washer with wiper. The wiper is somehow not present. But it is a top-spec trim. One notable change that we could spot in an instance is that this test mule gets single-tone alloy wheels. While outgoing model gets dual-tone alloys.Upcoming Altroz EV?Coming to the last set of predictions, it also has a very high chance of being the production version of Altroz EV. We say this because test mule has a cutout for exhaust tip to jut out. But an exhaust is not visible from the camera’s angle. Altroz EV was first showcased at 2020 Auto Expo.2023 Tata Altroz Spied Testing – EV?This test mule might be an EV as Tata Motors is expanding its EV portfolio vigorously with the recent announcement of Tiago EV. 2023 Altroz EV was supposed to get the same battery pack as Nexon EV Prime and around 350 to 400 km of claimed range. Right now, Altroz gets a 1.2L petrol engine option and a 1.5L diesel engine option and competes with Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20, Maruti Baleno, and the likes. More info will revolve soon. More

Tata Motors Nexon EV and EV Max variants now cost more after July 2022 price increase; electric car sales on the risePrices of all variants of Tata Nexon EV and Nexon EV MAX have been increased in July 2022Nexon EV has done wonders for the auto manufacturer. Competing in a segment with little or no competition has given Tata Motors an early mover advantage. With serious EV adoption targets by the end of the decade, it’s only a matter of time until small electric cars become commonplace. But that day is not today.Tata sells two passenger segment EVs, Nexon and Tigor. In June 2022, the company reported EV sales at 3,507 units. For the month, the auto manufacturer’s highest seller was Nexon. At 14,295 units sold, the bestseller includes Nexon EV sales too. 4,931 units of Tiago were sold, and this too absorbs Tigor EV sales.Tata Nexon Electric Prices – July 2022Tata Nexon XM EV now costs Rs 14.99 L, up from Rs 14.54L. Price hike stands at Rs 45k up at 3.09 percent. Nexon XZ+ EV is costlier by Rs 35k at Rs 16.30 L, up from Rs 15.95 L. Price hike is reported at 2.19 percent. While Tata Motors does sell EVs at an entry price point, they aren’t exactly cheap. And given the recent price hike announced by the manufacturer, its electric cars too are now a tad bit costlier. In providing a car with a longer drive range, only recently, Tata Nexon EV Max was launched. Tata Nexon Electric Battery Price Rs 7 Lakh – Nexon EV Owner Reveals

Tata Motors provides a 1.6 lakh km or 8 years (whichever is early) warranty on Nexon EVImage – MohilTata Motors has taken the Indian four-wheeler EV market by storm with compelling products like Tigor EV, Nexon EV and Nexon EV Max. It all started with Nexon Electric and the company is expected to launch an electric version of Altroz premium hatchback too.Right now, Tata Motors is the leading 4W EV manufacturer in the country. They have had a headstart while other manufacturers are still considering this venture. Recently, we saw a Nexon EV turn into a fireball in Maharashtra. But it is the very first four-wheeled EV fire hazard that was ever registered and fortunately, Nexon EV flashed warnings before the fire started prompting the owner to get out.Tata Nexon Electric Battery Replacement CostRecently, a Nexon Electric owner shared his experience on social media regarding his EV. According to the owner, he drove his Nexon EV for 68,000 km in two years. After this mileage, his Nexon EV’s range was reduced and also, the car wouldn’t run when battery state of charge goes below 15%.This is a peculiar example of battery behaviour. But as it was under warranty, Tata Motors replaced the old battery with a new battery with no additional cost tabbed on the owner. When the owner asked the dealer regarding the actual cost of a new battery, they quoted Rs. 7,00,000. Yes, Rs 7 lakh.Tata Nexon Electric owner reveals price of a new batteryThis Rs. 7,00,000 quote is not actually revealed by Tata Motors officially. Coming to the owner, when simplified, on average, he has driven 2,833 km per month. When further simplified, turns out to be 95 km a day. Most owners are not going to drive 95 km a day. This particular Nexon EV owner has specific commute needs that are not mainstream.  Coming to the cost of Rs. 7,00,000 quoted, it seems to be a fair price for a technology that is still young in India. Coming to EVs in India, batteries are not manufactured here. They have to be specially designed for the application. With time and more localization and mass manufacturing, battery prices will scale down. In a world where a pumped-up Mac Pro computer from Apple can cost Rs. 50 lakhs (I kid you not), an EV battery with 30.3 kWh capacity for Rs. 7,00,000 is justified.EV Running CostsAn EV will cost around Rs. 1 to Rs. 1.6 to cover 1 km of distance. When compared to an ICE vehicle with 20 kmpl efficiency figures, it costs around Rs. 5. And for reference, Nexon EV batteries don’t exactly die at 68,000 km for everyone. Battery degradation is based on number of charge-discharge cycles, charging temperature, charger capacity and a thousand more parameters.Tata Nexon EV Battery. Image – SefeejGoing with 70,000 km for consistent performance, if you drive 50 km a day every day, Tata Nexon EV battery might still offer solid performance for around 4 years. If performance degrades, Tata Motors warranty covers the battery. So, theoretically, your Nexon EV will be solid for 4 more years. It’s not all good though. Instances like these, trigger further doubts in potential EV buyers’ minds and after-sales demand for an EV will definitely be lower. Right now, Tata Nexon EV starts from Rs. 14.78 lakh and Nexon EV Max starts from Rs. 17.74 lakh (both ex-sh).  More

Tata Nexon Electric Catches Fire In Mumbai – Official Statement

This is the first Tata Nexon EV fire incident that has been reported since its launchTata Nexon Electric catches fireEV fires are not a rare phenomenon these days. We have seen EV fires take place from time to time. Even in a country like India where EV market is still in the budding phase, we have seen EV fires in electric scooters produced by various startups. But that doesn’t mean that EV fire hazards are only confined to startups or inexperienced manufacturers only happen in a country like India. EV fire hazards occur in the US too. Most of these EV hazards come from esteemed EV manufacturers like Tesla Motors and General Motors.Tata Nexon Electric Catches Fire – MumbaiNexon EV is the highest selling electric car of India. Every month, about 2,500 to 3,000 units of the EV are sold. Until now, there has been no reported incident of Nexon EV catching fire. But yesterday, a Tata Nexon electric SUV caught fire in Mumbai’s Vasai area. Videos of the same have gone viral on social media. As per a reader, the owner of the car had charged his Nexon EV with a normal slow charger installed at his office. After driving about 5 km in slow traffic commute towards his house, he heard clicky sounds from the car. Soon he was treated with flashes of warnings on the instrument cluster which made him park it at the side and get out.[embedded content][embedded content]Video shared by Twitter user KamalJoshi108, we can see firefighters spraying water on the burning Nexon EV. Even though a burning electric car can’t be doused with water, it can be beneficial in controlling the fire from spreading to the surroundings. EV fires take a longer time to douse, as individual cells are subjected to a chain reaction and will burn individually or in small clusters.Tata Nexon Electric FireTata Motors official Statement – Nexon EV FireTata Motors notified Rushlane – “A detailed investigation is currently being conducted to ascertain the facts of the recent isolated thermal incident that is doing the rounds on social media. We will share a detailed response after our complete investigation. We remain committed to the safety of our vehicles and their users. This is a first incident after more than 30,000 EVs have cumulatively covered over 10 million km across the country in nearly 4 years.”Why did it happen? It is anyone’s guess as to why Nexon electric caught fire. Some of the reasons include – Battery overheating due to overcharging or fast charging can cause EV fires. A battery compromised in a crash also caused fire. Battery chemistry, design and cooling also form a paramount reason why EVs catch fires. There are a million permutations and combinations that could have led to the fire hazard that happened with the Nexon EV in question. We will have to wait for Tata Motor’s investigation report as to why it happened. More

Tata Safari Spied With Green No Plates – First Safari Electric SUV?

Tata Motors is the leading electric vehicle maker in India – They have plans to launch many new electric SUVs in the futureTata Safari Electric SpiedTata Safari Electric! Already? Hold your horses. We know Tata Safari Electric is exciting news and it looks like a good proposition too. But not a lot is known about this mysterious vehicle that has been spotted somewhere in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. It does look like a finished product, as good as any other Tata Safari bought from an authorized dealer. But we think that it isn’t the case at all. After a bit of searching the number plate across multiple vehicle databases, it was revealed that it still showed as XZA+ variant with 2.0L Kryotec BS6 engine. But the number plate is green, which indicates that it is an EV. So why is a Tata Safari that is registered as a diesel on the RTO database, wearing a green no plate? Here are some explanations for this confusing spy shot of Tata Safari Electric.Tata Safari Electric SpiedAs we all know, Tata Safari only gets a 2.0L Kryotec diesel engine sourced from Stellantis (formerly, Fiat-Chrysler) that makes 168 bhp and 350 Nm. Tata Motors has been testing the Safari with a petrol engine too and on the test mule, you will see a red number plate. It’s because in India, every single test mule, EV or not, is given a red number plate.  Only the finalised product that is sold for private use, get the usual number plates from RTO. White board with black font indicates a PV (passenger vehicle), yellow board with black font indicates LCV (light commercial vehicle) and HCV (heavy commercial vehicle). Whereas a black board with yellow font indicates self-driven rental vehicles. EVs get two different types of number plates where the board is green for both and if the vehicle has a white font, it is an electric PV and if the font is yellow, it is an electric CV.  Tata Safari EV Spied with green no plateThe Tata Safari electric spotted has a green board with white font indicating that it is an electric PV. But Tata never launched it. If you suspect that it is a prank of some sort or the owner is committing fraud, that does not seem to be the case as the number plate is a properly embossed number plate with non-removable bolts with RTO’s hologram too. It doesn’t look like a fake number plate at all.  Tata Safari EV – What is it?The car looks like it actually is an EV as registered by the RTO. But it is not a test mule undergoing testing by Tata as it doesn’t have a red number plate. This might be the work of a third-party that has developed an EV conversion kit for Safari. We don’t know the name of the company as of now. But developing an EV conversion kit is no mean feat.Electronics and electricals are one of the most complicated aspects of vehicle development. The entire electric harness has to be custom-built with proper voltage architectures in mind. Then comes the hassle of battery placement, motor placement, mass centralisation, weight distribution, centre of gravity, interior packaging with the new battery in place, battery weather sealing, battery cooling solutions, battery management system tuning, modifications to brakes and suspension to accommodate the extra weight and a million more aspects. It is not an easy task of just taking out the engine and stuffing batteries in its place.Tata Safari Electric Spied – New Safari EVWe have seen EV conversion kits like this before too. Our bet is that Tata Safari Electric conversion kit is being developed by someone, with good resources to back them up. The car in question seems to be a piece of demonstration for investors, bankers or even Government officials. This company seems like they first bought a Tata Safari XZA+ and then converted it into an EV and then got it re-registered as an EV from RTO. If that is the case, Tata Safari Electric range could be somewhere in between 300-500 kms. Whatever it is, it looks promising. If you happen to have more details, please get in touch. More
