TVS 650cc Motorcycle Under Development – Royal Enfield Rival

TVS new flagship motorcycle will have a twin-cylinder engine and a range of hi-tech equipment and connectivity featuresTVS owned Norton MotorcyclesWith lifestyle segment registering strong growth, TVS is looking to aggressively target this space. TVS may be a late entrant, but there’s always space for a good product that ticks all the right boxes. As of now, Royal Enfield 650 twins dominate the lifestyle segment in terms of volumes. RE deserves a pat on the back for its visionary ability to launch products that are future-ready.TVS new 600-750cc bike will also be a great option for loyal TVS customers looking for an upgrade. Presently, choices don’t go beyond the 310cc Apache RR310. It’s sort of a lost opportunity for the company, especially considering the fact that an increasing number of enthusiasts are moving to 500+ cc segment.TVS 650cc Motorcycle LaunchDevelopment of TVS new 600-750cc bike is already underway. However, there is no official confirmation from TVS on such developments. Just like rival offerings, TVS new flagship will have a twin-cylinder motor. Power and torque output could be close to or better than rivals. For reference, Royal Enfield 650 twins produce 47 hp of max power and 52 Nm of peak torque. It remains to be seen what body style TVS chooses for its new flagship. There could be multiple body styles launched simultaneously or TVS could start with a single offering such as a roadster. Based on market response, TVS could consider other body styles based on the same platform. It could include scrambler, cafe racer, ADV, etc.TVS will definitely need multiple products in 600-750cc segment, as rivals like Royal Enfield are consistently expanding their portfolio in this space. After Super Meteor 650, Royal Enfield will add other 650cc bikes such as Shotgun 650, Himalayan 650 and Classic 650. TVS new flagship will also go up against the upcoming 650cc bikes from Jawa and Yezdi. It remains to be seen if TVS will go solo or seek collaboration with another entity for the development of its new flagship 600-750cc motorcycle. TVS had purchased British brand Norton Motorcycles in April 2020. Norton already has many big bikes on offer. It is likely TVS will use Norton expertise for their upcoming motorcycle.Transition to a lifestyle brandTVS has already started taking steps to position itself as a lifestyle brand. This is evident with products like Ronin and increased focus on community-based events. At the recently concluded 2023 MotoSoul, TVS had showcased four fascinating custom builds of Ronin. An updated connectivity platform was also unveiled at the event. Contribution of TVS Racing can be seen in the form of launch of a new type of racing format called Flat Track Racing.TVS Racing Performance Gear division will also have a key role to play in passive promotion of the new bike. All these initiatives will help create a conducive environment for launch of the new TVS flagship. TVS already has 2.5 lakh members in AOG (Apache Owners Group), many of whom may choose to upgrade to the new 600-750cc bike.Source More

TVS Apache, BMW 310cc To Get New Engine – Patent Leaks

BMW’s new Shift Cam single-cylinder engine is expected to deliver higher fuel efficiency and reduced emissionsTVS Apache 310 and BMW G310 RREngines with variable valve timing (VVT) and lift systems have been developed by various OEMs such as BMW, Honda and Ducati. Till now, VVT systems were largely used with larger capacity engines. In case of BMW, engines used with bikes like R 1250 boxer twins and the S 1000 RR have VVT.Now a new patent reveals that BMW is planning to introduce the Shift Cam system with its 300cc single-cylinder engine. Another target could be C 400 GT, which also has a similar motor. However, the primary candidates to benefit from this upgrade will be G310R, G310GS and G310RR. The updated engine is likely to be shared with TVS as well for its 310cc Apache range.BMW single-cylinder Shift Cam engineAs compared to Shift Cam system used in larger capacity BMW engines, the one to be used with the single-cylinder motor comes with a unique set of tweaks. Among the primary challenges is to make the Shift Cam system compact, so that it can fit inside the relatively smaller sized single-cylinder motor. This has resulted in some innovative tweaks to the single-cylinder motor.Just as the name suggests, Shift Cam works by altering the cam timing as well as the valve lift. This is achieved by shifting the inlet camshaft so that one of the two cam profiles is always in contact with the inlet valves. The Shift Cam system is beneficial as it increases fuel efficiency and reduces emission in both low-rpm and high-rpm scenarios.BMW / Apache 310 – New engine patent leaksBasic idea of Shift Cam system is the same in case of the single-cylinder motor. However, there are some changes such as the compact size of the Shift Cam. BMW has been able to reduce the size by using a solenoid actuator that is placed between the two intake valves. Since it is a 4-valve engine, the size of camshaft can be based on conventional design principles.BMW / Apache 310 – New engine patent leaksAnother innovation is a unique angle for the spark plug. This is necessary since the actuator is placed in the middle. As the whole camshaft slides, an extra idler gear has been provided. It connects the intake and exhaust cams. This is different from a direct chain drive that goes from the crankshaft to the camshafts.Launch timeline not knownIt may take some time to perfect the new Shift Cam single-cylinder setup. So, BMWs entry-level 310cc bikes are unlikely to get the updated engine anytime soon. Also, the manufacturing cost of this new engine is not known. Not all patents make it to production stage, as innovations need to have business viability for commercial applications.BMW / Apache 310 – New engine patent leaksIn its current form, BMW’s 313cc, water-cooled, single-cylinder engine generates 34 hp of max power and 28 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 6-speed constant mesh gearbox. Performance numbers won’t change much with the upcoming Shift Cam single-cylinder engine.Source More
