New Triumph Tiger 850 Sport Unveiled – India Launch Feb 2021

    2021 Triumph Tiger 850 Sport
The Triumph Tiger 850 Sport has a service interval of 16,000 km and a warranty of 2 years unlimited km

Less than a year from introducing the new generation Tiger 900, Triumph has withdrawn the entry level variant of the adventure tourer and replaced it with a reconfigured model in a bid to make the product family more manageable and accessible. Called the Triumph Tiger 850 Sport, the new variant aims to lure first time adventure buyers to the iconic nameplate.
    Triumph Tiger 850 Sport
Triumph says that there is a sizable number of prospective customers, mostly first time big bike buyers, who seek an affordable motorcycle which is not overloaded by the latest electronic gadgetry and offers a non-aggressive yet strong performance. The end result is an entry level adventure tourer which offers less power and is more focused on tarmac touring compared to the Tiger 900 variants.

Visually, the Triumph Tiger 850 Sport differentiates itself from the 900 family by means of dual-tone color themes (Graphite and Diablo Red, and Graphite and Caspian Blue). With 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels shod with latest Michelin Anakee Adventure tyres, the Tiger 850 Sport is capable of handling bad roads and moderate trails with ease.
    Specifications
The Triumph Tiger 850 Sport continues to employ the 900 family’s 888 cc in-line three-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with T-Plane crank shaft. However, the motor is tuned to deliver a relatively modest output of 85 hp (10 hp less) at 8,500 rpm and 82 Nm (5 Nm less) at 6,500.

The peak power and torque are produced at lower engine speeds compared to the Triumph 900. The transmission is a 6-speed unit which is connected to the engine via a slip and assist clutch.

The motorcycle offers 2 riding modes – road and rain. The Euro 5 compliant motor can also be specified in A2 avatar in Europe with restricted power output for new riders.
Despite being a cost-sensitive base model, the Tiger 850 Sport does not skimp on hardware. The adventure tourer sports 45 mm Marzocchi inverted telescopic front forks and a rear monoshock with pre-load adjustment. Braking is taken care of by a pair of 320 mm front discs stopped by monoblock 4-piston Brembo Stylema calipers and a 255 mm single rear disc with Brembo single-piston sliding caliper.

While the motorcycle offers two-channel ABS and switchable traction control as standard, they are not supported by IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) like higher 900 variants, and hence are not cornering-sensitive. Other noteworthy features include a 5-inch high-contrast TFT instrument display, full LED lighting and 12v power socket. The bike will be offered with a range of 60 accessories.
    Price and launch
At 9,300 pounds (on-the-road, UK), the Triumph Tiger 850 Sport is 200 pounds cheaper than the now discontinued entry level Triumph Tiger 900 despite offering more features like full LED headlights, Anakee tyres and Brembo Stylema front brakes. Compared to the Tiger 900 GT, the cost savings are even higher.

The Tiger 850 is slated to hit the European market towards the end of January 2021. India launch is scheduled in Feb 2021. Expect the new variant to be priced well below the current Tiger range which starts at INR 13.7 lakh (ex-showroom) for the GT variant. The primary rival is the BMW F 750 GS. More

Mahindra To Launch BSA Motorcycle In The UK – Likely To Get Jawa Based Engine

    BSA Motorcycles
BSA motorcycles are expected to be pitched as a premium alternative to the Royal Enfield products in Europe

Classic Legends, a partial subsidiary of Mahindra, is all set to establish its production footprint abroad. After resurrecting Jawa Motorcycles, the two wheeler maker is on course to do the same for the iconic British brand BSA. Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, announced that the first of the new BSA motorcycles will be assembled by Classic Legends in the UK starting from mid-2021.
    BSA Motorcycles by Classic Legends
The timeline indicates that the new BSA motorcycle is almost ready for production and the company is just waiting for the Brexit negotiations to be completed. It is being reported that the product in question is likely being developed in India.
Established in 1861, Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) started its life as a weapons manufacturer before diversifying into motorcycles in early 20th century. After thriving for decades, the motorcycle division’s fortunes started dwindling in 1960’s before eventually going bankrupt in 1972. With a rich heritage and a positive brand recall, the BSA brand has a potential for revival with right kind of product, and that is exactly what Classic Legends has in mind.
    Market positioning
Even though the first BSA motorcycle by Classic Legends is only a few months away from entering production, we don’t know much about the technical details. It is being reported that the company is aiming to target the 5,000 to 10,000 pound segment (INR 4.92 lakh to 9.84 lakh).
    Jawa in Europe
This suggests that the product is likely to be a medium displacement retro-classic roadster commanding a premium over comparable Royal Enfield products. Coincidentally, the recently launched Jawa in Czech Republic by Mahindra Classic Legends, is priced in a similar range. Price of Jawa in Europe starts from €6k (approx Rs 5.23L). It is possible Mahindra uses the Jawa based engine for their BSA range of motorcycles. Jawa currently has two single cylinder engine options on offer – one is a 295cc unit while the other is a 334cc unit.
More details are likely to trickle down in the coming months as the company gets ready for the market launch. Assembly operations in the UK strongly suggests that Europe is the primary target market where the brand has a better recall. Selling a British-made motorcycle in India in a segment dominated my Royal Enfield is not exactly a sound business plan, and hence, we think BSA may not have our country on its radar.
BSA electric motorcycle on the anvil
According to The Guardian, Classic Legends has received a grant of 4.3 million pounds (around INR 45.2 Cr) from the UK government to develop an electric motorcycle. The grant will be used to set up a technical center at Banbury, Oxfordshire, with an estimated generation of 255 jobs.
The electric BSA in question is expected to be ready by end of 2021. It remains to be seen if this has any connection to the electric platform that Classic Legends is reported to be developing for India.

New Hyundai Micro UV Spied First Time – Maruti WagonR Electric Rival?

    Hyundai Micro UV
Hyundai’s mass market electric car for India is expected to be ready by 2023

Hyundai has gone on record to state that they are studying the possibility of a mass market EV for India. With the help of its Namyang R&D HQ, Hyundai’s Indian team has already commenced a study to arrive at optimal key parameters (range, power, price, etc) for a mass market EV.
Hyundai AX1 micro UV spied in Korea
Prototypes of what could eventually emerge as a mass market electric vehicle for the Asian markets have been spotted on a truck in South Korea. The Venue-style low-mounted headlamps and a prominent grille give away Hyundai’s identity. International media reports claim that these are Hyundai AX1 (codename) micro UV prototypes.
The camouflaged test mules appear to have near-production body panels. From what we can see, the vehicle features an SUV-ish tall-boy design with a compact footprint. The angular design elements gives the car an interesting and unconventional shape. Finer elements are under wraps but it is reasonable to expect radical design conforming to the brand’s current language.
    Specifications
The technical details of the new Hyundai AX1 small car are scarce for now but the tall wheels and narrow tyres are indicative of a configuration which is commonly preferred for an electric vehicle.
Hyundai Micro UV Codenamed AX1 – Rival to Maruti WagonR Electric in India?
With global automotive markets including India scrambling to adopt electric mobility at the earliest, it would be prudent for any upcoming mass market product to prioritize pure electric powertrain during the development phase even if it has to adopt conventional IC power units at the beginning of its life cycle.
If the Hyundai AX1 is to be propelled by fossil fuel, then the most likely powertrain candidate is the 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit which is available in both NA and turbocharged guises. As far as electric propulsion system goes, Hyundai is likely to have multiple motor and battery configurations to suit different markets.
    Will it come to India?
It would be surprising if a car of this size and shape from Hyundai does not make it to India. We expect it to be showcased in the form of a concept at Auto Expo 2022 before its market launch sometime later that year or in 2023. Hyundai’s mass market electric vehicle will be pitted against the upcoming Maruti WagonR EV, Mahindra eKUV100, Citroen sub Rs 8 lakh EV for India, etc.
Just like Hyundai India’s current mass market products, the upcoming electric vehicle will have over 90% localization in order to achieve a competitive price point. The future is electric and Hyundai knows it very well.

2021 Ducati XDiavel Dark, Black Star, Scrambler Nightshift – Breaks Cover

    2021 Ducati XDiavel Black Star
The 2021 Ducati XDiavel receives an 8 hp power boost in addition to becoming Euro-5 compliant

Ducati started its five-episode world premiere video series with a bang last week by world premiering the all-new Multistrada V4 adventure tourer. In its second episode, the Borgo Panigale establishment introduced a fleet of black themed motorcycles for the 2021 model year.
    2021 Ducati XDiavel Dark
The 2021 Ducati XDiavel is available in two editions centering around the dark theme. Conforming to ‘Reduce to the Max‘ design philosophy, the 2021 XDiavel Dark adopts matte finish for the bodywork and mechanical components, resulting in a menacing power cruiser. The highlights include black anodized
    2021 Ducati XDiavel Dark
It is not a purely cosmetic venture though. Ducati has tweaked the engine mapping and revised the exhaust system to make the XDiavel’s Testastretta DVT 1262 liquid-cooled motor compliant with Euro-5 emission norms. While at it, the engineers have managed to squeeze 8 hp more out of the motor which now has 160 hp on tap. However, the power bump is applicable only for the markets which impose Euro 5 norms.
Feature highlights include LED headlight, TFT instrument console, adjustable suspension system, Brembo monoblock calipers at the front, Pirelli Diablo Rosso tyres, slipper clutch and so on.

    Ducati XDiavel Black Star
The Black Star is inspired by the world of sportscars, says Ducati. The special edition motorcycle is swathed in matte black and grey livery with a dash of contrast red accent. Positioned above the XDiavel Dark, the XDiavel Black Star boasts additional features such as the lightweight forged and machined wheels, suede leather saddle and other features that are consistent with the existing S Trim including the Ducati Multimedia System.
    2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift
In addition to introducing new colour themes for the Scrambler Desert Sled and Icon, Ducati also added a new Scrambler Nightshift variant to the mix. The latest member of the 803 variant features Aviator grey paint job in matte finish and a minimal roadster styling. The frame, engine and spoke wheels (18-inch front and 17-inch rear) are all finished in black. The meaty Pirelli MT60 dual-purpose rubbers significantly add to the motorcycle’s raw character.
    2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift
There isn’t any noteworthy change to the features list. The 2021 Ducati Scrambler Nightshift continues to be equipped with LED instrument dial, dual-channel cornering ABS, LED DRLs, and so on. Ducati has 3 more episodes of its world premiere series to be aired, and we think, by the end of it, the entire portfolio will stand updated for the new, and hopefully better, year.

Jawa Motorcycle Sales Record 50k Milestone – 2 Years Since Launch

    Image – Jawa
Rival Royal Enfield sold almost 67k motorcycles in single month of Oct 2020

Classic Legends has announced 50k unit sales of Jawa Motorcycles since launch in 2018. Though it is almost 2 years after launch that this feat has been achieved, Jawa claims the sales feat was achieved in an effective 12 months of full operations. At the time of launch in 2018, Jawa had aimed to sell about 90k motorcycles annually or about 7,500 units monthly.
Even though Jawa launched motorcycles in Nov 2018, it was only in April 2019 that the deliveries started. Then of course one had to deal with zero activity during specified periods of nationwide lockdown period (since March 2020), with near zero inventories owing to waiting period.
As the company embarks on its journey for the next 50k milestone, Jawa motorcycles continues to expand production capacity and dealership count. Ashish Singh Joshi, CEO – Classic Legends Pvt. Ltd. said, “As the newest entrant in the Indian motorcycle market, we are proud of what we have achieved in such a short duration.” Jawa aims to register the next 50k unit sales in less than 1 year.
    Best Selling Jawa
Jawa’s return to full fledged business was as recent as 2018. To get going, the company readied a production facility and sells 3 models -Jawa, Jawa forty two and Perak that not only make up the product lineup but also were tasked with the responsibility of brand resurrection. To support this, a sales network is under ongoing development, and ops have been ramped to meet customer demands.
Perak has been best-selling Jawa motorcycle in recent months. Image – Ravinder
The 50,000 motorcycles milestone is of significance to the brand as it portends a future roadmap that the company is geared up to achieve. Jawa Motorcycles views this as ‘healthy demand’ having had to contend with the 50k taking a longer time to reach owing to Covid-19 related production challenges.
The company is upbeat the next 50k units milestone will be attained in lesser time. In the meantime, Classic Legends has started exports with a batch of Jawa motorcycles being shipped to Europe, and Nepal. Only last month, the company celebrated delivery of 2000 Perak units, making it the best-selling Jawa.
    Perak
Perak roots goes back to the 1940s, during the time of the Nazi German’s rule in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. In those difficult times, there was a man dressed in black who moved in the shadows. It was rumoured that this strange figure was portrayed as a Czech hero.
He gave the people a sense of comfort, leapt out of the darkness and was indestructible, not afraid of the German troupes or the ‘Bullet’. Though the Germans tried to capture this figure, which came to be called ‘Perak’, their efforts proved unsuccessful.
Jawa Perak BS6, priced at Rs.1.94 lakhs, is presented in a single colour option. Buyers can avail the Perak with a zero down payment scheme or an EMI of Rs.6,666 along with an exchange program of upto Rs.5,000. More

Harley Davidson Dealers Unhappy Post Hero Alliance – Might File Legal Case

    File Photo.
Harley Davidson dealers in India have hired a law firm and are looking at legal options

While the Harley Davidson & Hero MotoCorp deal is a positive development for customers and motorcycle enthusiasts, many Harley dealerships are facing an uncertain future.
Harley dealers are even more worried now because there’s a growing possibility that the total number of dealerships may be reduced to just 13-15 dealerships. This will be a major setback to Harley dealers who may be asked to shut shop.
    Demand for higher compensation
One of the primary complaints of Harley dealers is that the compensation package is not enough to cover their losses. The compensation offered by Harley-Davidson management includes two components, one of which is Rs 1,500 per sq. ft., after adjusting for 10% annual value depreciation. The second component is reimbursement of sales margins for a period of 6 months.
Harley dealers claim that this compensation is significantly lower than their collective investments over the last decade, which amounts to around Rs 300 crore. Moreover, since the lockdown was lifted in August, the dealers have been incurring huge losses of around Rs 30-40 lakh every month.
    Harley Davidson India Dealer
In the domestic market, Harley’s bestselling product was Street 750 mid-sized motorcycle. It contributed around 70-80% of the company’s sales in the country.
Earlier, dealers used to sell around 20-25 Harleys every month, but the numbers are down to single digits. As new Harley products may take some time to be launched via Hero MotoCorp partnership, dealers are demanding higher compensation for their investment and losses.
    Law firm appointed
With the possibility that on-going talks may not lead to favourable developments, the Harley-Davidson Dealers Association has appointed a law firm AZB & Partners. The plan is to explore legal options to safeguard their investment and probably get higher compensation to recover their losses. However, this is a preliminary move to assess potential options. The dealers have not filed any case against either Harley or Hero MotoCorp.
Harley Davidson dealers are hopeful that things will be resolved in a favourable manner for all stakeholders. They are currently waiting for a formal announcement to be made by either Harley or Hero MotoCorp. The dealers say that they need to be clearly told about the next steps, so that they can make adjustments accordingly.
As per the deal between the two companies, Hero MotoCorp will be taking over the sales and service operations of Harley. This will be done via the existing Harley outlets.
Hero will also be retailing original parts, accessories, riding gear, apparel and general merchandise. Hero also gets the license to develop and sell premium motorcycles with Harley Davidson brand name. The first of these products could be a 350cc – 500cc motorcycle that will challenge the supremacy of Royal Enfield. More

    Hero Xtreme 200S BS6 Launch Price Rs 1.15 L – Rivals Bajaj Pulsar 220F

    BS6 Hero Xtreme 200S
Hero Xtreme 200S will lock horns with Bajaj Pulsar 220F, which is priced at Rs 1.24 lakhs

Hero MotoCorp has finally launched its fully-faired bike Xtreme 200S in its BS6 derivative. The bike was not yet been upgraded to the latest emission norms and, therefore, has not been in sale since April this year. Now, the brand has launched the latest iteration of its flagship motorcycle in India. Price is Rs 1,15,715, ex-sh; making it about Rs 9k cheaper than Pulsar 22F.
    Powertrain & Tranmission
Hero utilizes the same 199.6cc single-cylinder motor on Xtreme 200S which has been upgraded to BS6 emission norms in Xpulse 200. This unit is also set to receive an oil-cooler as seen on the adventure tourer. It will continue to be mated to a 5-speed gearbox.
As in the case with most updated BS6 two-wheelers, power figures on the new Xtreme 200S will be slightly altered. Output figures on the BS4 version read as 18.4 PS of maximum power and 17.1 Nm of peak torque. In its BS6 avatar, it now delivers 17.8 BHP @ 8500 RPM and an impressive torque of 16.4 Nm @ 6500 RPM. This means, power and torque figures, both have declined in BS6 avatar, when compared to BS4 figures.
    Design & Features
Speaking of design, the BS6 Xtreme 200S sports the same styling with similar fairing as seen on its predecessor. Although, it now gets a new paint scheme called Pearl Fadeless White. Earlier two colours of Sports Red, Panther Black, which were on sale in BS4 avatar, continue to be on sale in BS6 avatar as well.
    BS6 Hero Xtreme 200S
Equipment offered on the bike is also expected to remain same which shall consist of LED headlamp, LED taillight and an all-digital instrument console that comes equipped with Bluetooth-enabled turn-by-turn navigation, call alerts and gear position indicator. The Xtreme 200S comes with a 7-step adjustable mono shock suspension that offers superior ride handling, 276 mm Front Disc with single channel ABS and 220 mm Rear Disc for added safety.
Commenting on the launch, Naveen Chauhan, Head – Sales and Aftersales, Hero MotoCorp, said, “The new Xtreme 200S showcases our focused approach to the premium segment. Our premium products like the Xtreme 160R and XPulse 200 BS-VI are receiving an overwhelming response from the customers. I am confident that the Xtreme 200S will build on their success.”
Malo Le Masson, Head of Strategy, Hero MotoCorp, said, “Our horizontal strategy catering to all customer categories has worked really well and has allowed us to grow our market share in the premium motorcycle segment. We are confident that the BS-VI Xtreme 200S will continue its strong performance and further fortify our presence in the segment.”
    Hero Xtreme 200R No More?
Hero Xtreme 200S is a fully faired bike based on its naked version Xtreme 200R; which in all likelihood is discontinued. Thanks to Xtreme 160R. Its smaller sibling Xtreme 160R made its debut a few months ago and has received a generous response overall. The naked roadster is offered in two variants at a starting price of Rs 99,850 going up to Rs 1,03,500 (ex-showroom).
Hero Xtreme 160R is based on the Hero 1.R concept showcased at EICMA in Milan, Italy in 2019. The smaller Xtreme 160 is much sportier than its bigger sibling. The 160R attempts to be a sportier rendition of its elder faired sibling with minimum body panels, LED headlamp, heavily contoured single-piece seat, smoked-out LED taillight with ‘H’ signature and prominent chiseled fuel tank with contrast coloured extensions.
The Xtreme 160R is powered by a 163cc single-cylinder, SOHC engine which produces 15 bhp and 14 Nm of peak torque. Same 5-speed gearbox used in Xtreme 200S is offered in Xtreme 160R.  More
