There’s no slowing Hero MotoCorp, and it’s starting to look like business as usual. With the industry jolted into suspension in the end of March 2020, three months later the inactivity seems a far cry from the inactivity that gripped the industry not so long ago.

Given that manufacturing and sales operations have opened up in a phased manner, month-on-month sales has grown in response to activity increase, and Hero MotoCorp, has reported third consecutive month of growth since operations resumed.
Hero MotoCorp has sold 514,509 motorcycle and scooter units in July 2020. MoM sales growth over June 2020 is accounted at 14 percent. Wholesale dispatch numbers are at 95 percent of July 2019. Volumes have gotten boost from strong retail sales owing to positive market demand.

YTD FY21 motorcycle sales is down to 10,01,449 units at 54.84 percent sales decline from 22,17,792 units sold in YTD FY20. YTD FY21 scooter sales have fallen to 76,328 units, down from 1,60,938 units at 52.57 percent sales decline.

Exports for the period fell to 32,490 units, down percent 47.36 percent from 61,725 units. While average decline for now is noted at more than 50 percent, this number will gradually reduce each month, basis law of averages, provided operation aren’t further hampered.
    What Next
While current trends look upbeat, sales continues to be disrupted following micro-lockdowns across the country. For growth momentum to normalise, there’s a need for a stable and consistent business environment. Upward of 95 percent of Hero MotoCorp customer touch-points are now operational.
Last month, Hero MotoCorp made an additional investment of Rs. 84 crore (US $11 million) in Ather Energy. With this, the auto major’s shareholding in Ather has grown to 34.58 percent, up from 31.27 percent. • Bajaj Domestic Sales vs Exports June 2020 – Pulsar, Platina, CT100, Avenger

In June 2020, Bajaj Auto sold 1,44,329 units (-25.76%) in India while exporting 97,592 units (-33.78%)
Chakan-based two-wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Auto Limited, like every other major OEM, is making a slow recovery from COVID-19 and India’s initial lockdown protocols. Sales continue to be on the lower side compared to pre-COVID months. Furthermore, two-wheeler brands often witness reduced demand during the monsoons.

In June 2020, Bajaj registered 1,44,329 units in the domestic market while exporting 97,592 units. The figures saw a decline of 25.76% and 33.78%, respectively compared to the sales performance back in June 2019 (domestic sales: 1,94,416 units; exports: 1,47,376 units). Following it is Bajaj Platina with 35,277 units in June 2020 compared to 56,947 or 38.05% more back in the same month, a year before. In June 2020, 63,996 Bajaj Boxer units were shipped while June 2019 saw 81,984 units being sold. This is a sales decline just shy of 22%. Bajaj CT is another affordable choice in several foreign markets. Last month, 11,970 Bajaj CT models were exported compared to 18,761 units or 36.20% more back in June 2019.

Bajaj sales vs exports – June 2020
Bajaj Discover is still produced for exports. It returned 7,532 units in June 2020 as against 16,212 units in the same month, one year ago. Bajaj Platina saw 2,016 units being shipped in June 2020. In June 2019, the figure was up by 58.21% to hit 4,824 units. • Top 10 Scooters in June 2020 – Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter, Ntorq

In June 2020, the top 10 scooters sold in India collectively hit 2,57,328 units compared to 4,64,458 units (-44.60%) back in June 2019
The Indian automotive industry is on its way to making a slow recovery from COVID-19 pandemic and the nationwide lockdown protocols announced towards the end of March 2020. By early May, automotive facilities in ‘orange’ and ‘green’ COVID-19 zones were allowed to operate in controlled conditions.

Meanwhile, major OEMs introduced online sales platforms that offer a safe and convenient method to buy a new vehicle. Some of these ‘online showrooms’ feature dedicated finance solutions, options to opt a test drive at the customers’ residence; virtual assistant, exclusive benefits and more. Furthermore, the vehicle is delivered at a location of the customer’s preference in a safe, sanitised and socially distanced environment.
India’s two-wheeler market is witnessing a decent rate of sales increase despite being the monsoons. Figures still have a long way to go before reaching pre-COVID trends. Almost all two-wheelers have become BS6-compliant as well. In most cases, prices have increased considerably due to the amount of reengineering required in an existing power plant (such as the inclusion of fuel injection) to cut down emissions.
Top 10 scooters sold in June 2020

    Top 10 scooters June 2020
Last month, the top 10 scooters sold in the country collectively garnered 2,57,328 units in comparison to 4,64,458 units, back in June 2019. This is a massive sales decline of 44.60%. Unsurprisingly, Honda Activa tops the list at 1,21,668 units as against 2,36,739 units in the same month, a year before. Following way behind is TVS Jupiter with 37,831 units and a 32.75% decrease in sales from June 2019.
TVS Ntorq collected 18,680 units in June 2020 and faced a sales drop of 3,058 units. Suzuki Access and Hero Pleasure came somewhat close to each other at 15,540 units (-68.52%) and 15,012 units (+77.15%), respectively. Hero Pleasure saw the highest sales improvement in June 2020.
Honda Dio and Hero Destini also came close to each other, at 12,883 units and 12,475 units, respectively. The former faced a 70.55% decline while the latter enjoyed a welcome growth of 10.48% in sales. TVS Scooty Pep+, one of the most affordable petrol-CVT scooter in India, hit 8,291 units in comparison to roughly 22% back in June 2019. Finally comes the two Yamaha models, Ray and Fascino. June 2020 sales figures stood at 7,832 units (-26.78%) and 7,116 units (-54.15%) each.
To a good extent, electric scooters make more sense than a conventional petrol-CVT example. Since scooters are primarily used in cities, e-scooters do not need to promise three-digit range figures on a full charge. One could argue that charging times are a major weak point of EVs in general, but in urban environments, overnight charging has proven to be more effective than depending on the nearest fast-charging outlet.

  • Royal Enfield June 2020 Sales Break Up, Exports – Classic 350, Himalayan lead

On the Indian domestic market, Royal Enfield sold 36,510 units in June 2020 compared to 55,082 units back in June 2019
Chennai-based motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield, like every other major automaker, has not been doing particularly well since COVID-19 hit India. In fact, the entire Indian automotive industry is making a slow recovery from the government’s near-two-month nationwide COVID-19 lockdown protocols, put into effect towards the end of March 2020.

To strengthen business operations amid these challenging times, the company introduced its online booking page with attractive finance and EMI options. It has also started a doorstep service initiative dubbed Royal Enfield Service on Wheels (currently available only in Chennai). Service personnel coming under the programme are issued a Royal Enfield Bullet Trials 350, with custom-built toolkits and other essentials.
Meanwhile, Royal Enfield is working on the next-gen ‘UCE 350’ range, starting with the Meteor 350 — replaces the phased-out BS4 Thunderbird and ThunderbirdX 350 siblings. The company discontinued its ‘UCE 500’ lineup ahead of BS6 emission norms due to low demand. At present, Royal Enfield has three model lines in its global portfolio: 350 (Bullet, Electra and Classic), Himalayan and 650 Twins.

Royal Enfield June 2020 – Domestic Sales and Exports
Royal Enfield Domestic Sales – June 2020
In June 2020, Royal Enfield sold a total of 36,510 units in India as against 55,082 units back in June 2019. Among them, the Classic 350 topped the list at 22,699 units despite facing a sales decline of 32.82%. Entry-level offerings Bullet 350 and Electra 350 garnered 8,108 units (-18.92%) and 4,058 units (+50.63%) each last month. The Electra 350 is the only model which could garner positive sales figures.
Royal Enfield’s proven adventure tourer, Himalayan hit 835 units and went through a sales drop of 31.73%. It will soon receive a strong rival in the form of Mahindra Two Wheelers’ Mojo 300 BS6. On the other hand, the parallel-twin 650 Twins (Interceptor and Continental GT) collectively marked 810 units and a 53.74% fall. The now-discontinued Thunderbird 350 line had marked 4,749 units last year.
Royal Enfield Exports – June 2020
In foreign markets, Indian-made Royal Enfield products are quite popular thanks to the supreme affordability they offer. The Royal Enfield Himalayan has already become a sought-after starter motorcycle for heavy offroading. Only 279 Himalayan units were shipped in June 2020. In comparison, 66.47% more made it to foreign markets last year.
The Royal Enfield Classic 500 (not available on our market anymore) hit just 98 units last month as against 421 units in June 2019. The Thunderbird is still available for select export markets. It returned only 14 units in June 2020; still an improvement by 1 unit. Finally on the list comes the Classic 350 and Bullet 500 with a sales loss of almost 98%. More

  • Top 10 Motorcycles June 2020 Sales – Bajaj Pulsar Enters Top 3

The top 10 motorcycles sold in June 2020 collectively contributed 6,12,531 units in sales compared to 8,79,123 units back in June 2019
As India’s automotive industry makes a slow recovery from COVID-19 pandemic and its lockdown protocols, monthly sales charts are witnessing higher numbers. However, the figures are much lesser than pre-COVID trends. Globally, automotive businesses have started working at nearly their full potential in a safe, sanitised and socially distanced environment.

Several automakers have opened online sales platforms to boost sales amid these difficult times. Important events such as auto shows, launches, unveils and media drive/ride have been either cancelled or postponed depending on guidelines issued by local health authorities. On the other hand, deliveries and test drives are conducted following all safety measures.
The new ‘online showrooms’ mentioned above have gained substantial popularity in the past few months thanks to the level of convenience offered. Furthermore, they do not affect the business of existing dealerships in any manner since the user would be directed to the nearest or preferred outlet at the end.

In the top ten, max de-growth in two-wheeler sales in June has been registered by Maharashtra (-64.78%). West Bengal is next with -52.00% de-growth, followed by Gujarat at -49.90%. Among all states, Ladakh, Manipur and J & K have registered max de-growth at -100.00%, -99.78% and -84.48%, respectively.
FADA reports that two-wheeler sales are expected to grow further in the coming months, even though achieving pre-Covid level growth might still take several months. Most dealerships are now operational across the country and customers are also choosing online purchase and home delivery options launched by two-wheeler manufacturers.
    Market insights
A notable finding by FADA is that consumer sentiment in rural areas continues to be buoyant. The harvest was good last year and monsoon season has arrived early this year. Moreover, the weatherman has predicted that it will be a normal monsoon this year across most parts of the country. With ample cash at their disposal, consumers in rural areas are driving demand for two-wheelers.
The situation in Tier-I cities is just the opposite, where people are having to deal with mini-lockdowns imposed by respective state governments. This is pulling down the local economy, resulting in weak consumer confidence.
Other problems listed by FADA include challenges on the supply side and constraints in issuing two-wheeler loans by NBFCs. FADA has urged the government to announce favourable policy decisions for the auto industry, so that return to normalcy can be achieved in the shortest possible time. More
