Bajaj Auto registers 9 percent sales decline YoY

Bajaj Auto Limited has revealed their sales figures for August 2020. It may be seen that while Bajaj Auto could not match sales of August 2019, the company has shown a stronger recovery on a monthly basis, when compared with sales of July 2020. Bajaj Auto reported sales of 3,56,199 units in August 2020, down 9 percent when compared to total sales of 3,90,026 units sold in August 2019.
Domestic sales in the past month stood at 1,78,220 units, an increase of 3 percent over 1,73,024 units sold in August 2019 but exports dipped 6 percent to 1,42,838 units in the past month from 1,52,276 units exported in the same month of the previous year. This took total two wheeler sales to 3,21,058 units in August 2020, down 1 percent when compared to 3,25,300 units sold in August 2019.
    Bajaj Auto Sales Aug 2020
Sales of commercial vehicles fell hugely. Domestic sales dipped 78 percent to 7,659 units in the past month as against 35,085 units sold in August 2019. Exports, though reporting a de-growth, faired better than domestic sales. Sales fell by 7 percent to 27,482 units, down from 29,641 units exported in August 2019 thus taking total sales in the commercial vehicle segment to 35,141 units, down 46 percent as against 64,726 units sold in August 2019.
    Year to Date sales
The month of April 2020 saw every two and four wheeler maker in India report zero sales. Sales inched ahead in the months of May and June and it was only from July that there was some semblance of improvement noted in terms of vehicle sales in the country. This caused quite a setback in terms of year to date sales for each manufacturer.
Bajaj Auto Sales April to Aug 2020
Bajaj Auto Limited was no exception. The company has reported a 48 percent dip in year to date sales. In the two wheeler segment, domestic and exports dipped 45 percent to 9,59,543 units during the April to August 2020 period. This figure had stood at 9,54,938 units in the same period of the previous year.
Commercial vehicle sales (domestic and exports) also suffered de-growth of 67 percent to 95,591 units in the first five months of the financial year as compared to 2,88,593 units sold in the same period of 2019. This saw total two wheeler and commercial vehicle sales (domestic and exports) down 48 percent to 10,55,134 units in the April to August 2020 period as against 20,18,730 units sold in the same period of the previous year. FY21 YTD sales slowdown

Business at SMIPL is in strict adherence to extensive SOPs outlined to address the Covid-19 pandemic situation to ensure safety for dealer staff and customers. With lockdown relaxation, doing business has become easier than in May 2020, and that reflects in overall reporting of MoM sales by most manufacturers. Top selling Suzuki two wheelers in India are Access, Burgman, Intruder and Gixxer.
Speaking about products, Suzuki has launched a new colour option for the Burgman scooter today. In official speak, it is called Pearl Suzuki Medium Blue No. 2. It is available at a price of Rs 79,700, ex-sh. Other colours on offer with Burgman are – Metallic Mat Fibroin Gray, Pearl Mirage White, Metallic Matte Black No. 2 and Metallic Matte Bordeaux Red. Below is sales table of Suzuki India for Aug 2020.
    SMIPL Aug 2020 Sales
While lockdown has has created certain bumps that manufacturers now need to tide over, the auto market had been struggling even prior to lockdown. However, at the time Suzuki Mototorcyle India was able to report MOM growth even when others were struggling with sales growth, eventually equating to 5.7 percent growth in the last fiscal.
A feat, that’ll be difficult to better seeing FY21 YTD sales. Previously, the company had announced a target of one million units annual sales by 2020. Despite all efforts, general market slowdown was going to make the task a difficult one, but with Covid-19 pandemic related lockdown and economic slowdown, he task is now an impossible ask.
Suzuki operates a doorstep sales and service platform, which allows customers to book requirements as per convenience. SMIPL is confident that the upcoming festive season will bring in more positivity in the auto industry. For now, Suzuki’s inroad into the Indian two wheeler market sees its scooters do better than its motorcycles, contributing the king’s share of its domestic sales.
With resumption of business, SMIPL has also announced price hike across a range of its products in recent weeks. With BSVI a mandate since April 1, 2020, plans had to be put on hold at the time owing to lockdown. As business restarted, Suzuki Gixxer BS6 variants were launched in May 2020.
Koichiro Hirao, Managing Director, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd. said, “This double digit sequential growth of more than 46% has been made possible with the continuous efforts and hard work of our dealerships.”
    Suzuki recall
At the end of July 2020, SMIPL announced a recall of 612 scooters. This included BSIV Burgman and Access 125 units manufactured between July 2019 and October 2019. Potential defect was listed as Crankshaft R taper angle being not matched properly owing to a programming error in production line 4. The error meant less contact in generator rotor, wherein cyclic loads may cause fatigue failure of Crankshaft resulting in engine stoppage.
Globally, Suzuki’s middleweight parallel-twin engine patent filing that is now accessible points to a lighter and cleaner, naturally aspirated engine that will power 650cc bikes. In India, they are getting ready to launch the BS6 V-Strom. More

  • Royal Enfield August 2020 Sales 50k – Thanks to Classic 350, Bullet

With most manufacturers able to post MoM sales growth, overall 2020 August sales looks better than the month prior
Road Enfield reports domestic sales decline of 2 percent, down to 47,571 units from 48,752 units sold in August 2019. Exports too fell. Down by 38 percent, exports contracted to 2,573 units from 4,152 units. Total sales decline is reported at 5 percent, down at 50,144 units from 52,904 units.

In July 2020, Royal Enfield reported total sales at 40,334 units. While exports have not gained in a MoM comparison, domestic sales improved 25.43 percent from 37,925 units sold in July 2020.
It’s easy to see how much of a sigh of relief August 2020 sales brings considering FY21 YTD sales decline stands at 48 percent. Domestic sales for the last 5 months has contracted to 1,40,435 units, down from 2,72,364 units. Exports for the period have shrunk 60 percent, down at 7,312 units from 18,434 units.
    Royal Enfield Aug 2020 Sales
Total sales decline is reported at 49 percent, down to 1,47,747 units from 2,90,798 units in the same five months last year. What’s lost in Q1 FT21 isn’t likely to be recovered by year end, but a gradual recovery would bode well.
Since business restarted in May 2020 in passed manner, monthly performance continues to improve. While recovery for FY21 is a difficult ask, there’s no doubt that Q2 reports will look remarkably better than Q1 reports. A boost is expected on account of the ongoing festive season, an identified period during which time buying activity increases.
As the month same to a close Royal Enfield announced single day sales across Kerala at a 1,000 units owing to Onam. With festivity to continue over the next couple of weeks, sales through September 2020 is a space to watch out for. This is all the more exciting for RE owing to the launch of Meteor 350.
    Meteor 350 launch
Royal Enfield is geared up for multiple launches, the first of which happens to be Meteor 350. BS6 mandate and transition meant the Thunderbird 350cc variants are no longer sold. Royal Enfield Meteor, a 350cc segment entrant is queued for launch in September 2020. Available in three variants – Fireball, Stellar and Supernova, feature variances define each. Considering Royal Enfield created the 350cc segment, and has over the years refined, and defined it, a new launch is always exciting. Looking at current sales trends, a new offering will help further strengthen recovery.
Currently, Royal Enfield is testing other new bikes too. This includes one that may be known as Hunter or Sherpa, a replacement for Classic 350cc, and a 650cc cruiser. The brand is keen not just in reclaiming lost market share but also improving its exports as it continues to establish its reputation in the mid-segment market. More

  • Hero MotoCorp Aug 2020 Sales at 5.84 Lakh – Splendor Best Seller

The company is running at nearly 100% production capacity and is expecting further growth during festive season
In what could be a considered as a good news for the two wheeler industry in the country, Hero MotoCorp has posted a positive YoY sales growth for the first time after the onset of this ongoing pandemic. The country’s leading two wheeler maker witnessed its sales surpass pre-COVID levels in the month of August 2020 with a tally of 584,456 units. That’s a YoY growth of 7.55%.
    Areas of growth

The August figures represent fourth consecutive month of positive growth for Hero MotoCorp and is 13% higher than what it achieved in July 2020. The company credited the latest product, the Hero Xtreme 160R, for the improved sales performance. The motorcycle has quickly improved the brand’s market share in the premium segment.
Hero MotoCorp says that it has been witnessing a strong retail off-take lead by rural and semi-urban centers generating demand. The demand is so strong that the company is currently operating in pull-market mode of production and supply. Below is the detailed sales report of Hero MotoCorp for Aug 2020.
    Hero MotoCorp Sales Aug 2020
    Moving forward
Buoyed by the consistent growth in the recent months, the world’s largest maker of motorcycles and scooters (by volume) is ‘cautiously’ anticipating an upward trajectory in sales owing to several factors such as the increasing consumer confidence and the upcoming festive season.
As the Indian government easing lockdowns and travel restrictions across the country, almost all of Hero MotoCorp’s touch points across the country are open. Moreover, the company is operating nearly at its 100% capacity to plug the demand supply gap.
Hero MotoCorp’s strong performance could be considered as a clear indicator of recovery in the two wheeler market. We expect other major two brands to witness similar improvement in sales figures in the coming months as festive season approaches. With India being one of the largest two wheeler markets in the world, the industry has a significant contribution to the nation’s economy.
    Hero Xtreme 160R
The newly launched Hero Xtreme 160R has been receiving a positive response in the market. August 2020 was its first full month of retail. With a radical styling, the compact displacement sports naked motorcycle has caught the fancy of young urban audience.
The motorcycle is powered by a 163 cc fuel-injected, air-cooled engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The power and torque figures stand at 15 hp and 14 Nm respectively. Salient features include LED headlamps and turn indicators, digital instrument console and single-channel ABS.

  • Husqvarna India Sales, Exports July 2020 – Svartpilen, Vitpilen

In July 2020, Husqvarna Motorcycles India (under Bajaj Auto) sold 725 units in the domestic market while exporting 1,053 units
Husqvarna Motorcycles India launched its very first products, Vitpilen 250 and Svartpilen 250 towards the end of February 2020 at a starting price of Rs 1.80 lakh ex-showroom (now cost almost Rs 1.85 lakh). The ~250cc motorcycles share internals with KTM India’s popular 250 Duke naked sports motorcycle. Both KTM and Husqvarna single-cylinders are manufactured at Bajaj Auto’s Chakan manufacturing facility.

The Indian automotive industry is making a gradual recovery from COVID-19 and sales charts have been witnessing a gradual increase in the last couple of months. However, figures continue to remain considerably lower than pre-COVID trends.
The pandemic had brought several businesses to a standstill in its initial stages. But most companies have now become accustomed to the ‘new normals’. For instance, almost all major automakers have started online sales platforms as a safe and smooth alternative for purchasing a new vehicle.
Husqvarna Motorcycles India sales – July 2020

Husqvarna India Sales / Exports July 2020 vs July 2019
Coming back to Husqvarna Motorcycles India, the Swedish-origin two-wheeler brand sold 725 ‘250’ units on the domestic market in July 2020. On the other hand, exports hit 1,053 units since it also manufacturers ‘200’ and ‘401’ models for foreign markets. Husqvarna ‘200’ models (spied a few times) borrow their power plant from the KTM 200 Duke while the bigger ‘401’ range is basically KTM 390 Duke units in a shell designed by KISKA, a renowned branding and designing company based in Salzburg, Austria.
In total, Husqvarna Motorcycles India sold 1,778 units in July 2020. However, this is over 200 units less than the sales performance in June 2020 (which saw 1,996 units). Both the Svartpilen (almost a scrambler) and Vitpilen (almost a cafe racer) are expected to arrive in ‘200’ and ‘401’ formats by the end of this year.
    Key features & specs
Besides an interesting styling approach, the Husqvarna ‘250’ neo-retro siblings sport an exposed trellis frame, full-LED headlamp, forged aluminium triple clamps, WP USD forks, 5-spoke alloy wheels, single-pod digital instrument console, dual-channel ABS, slipper clutch, etc. As mentioned before, it employs the same engine as KTM India’s ‘250’ models: 250 Duke, RC250 (export-only) and 250 Adventure (in the works).
    The 248.8cc liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder motor generates 30.57bhp @ 8,000rpm and 27.4Nm @ 6,500rpm. This is mated to a 6-speed transmission.
It was only recently that KTM India upgraded the 250 Duke with a full-LED headlamp (same unit as on the 390 Duke). Prices currently start at Rs 2.09 lakh ex-showroom. In other words, the ‘250 Huskies’ undercut it by roughly Rs 24,000, thus offering appreciable value for a mass-production single-cylinder sports bike. More

Domestic sales of KTM India has declined for July 2020 – Exports have grown exponentially, thanks to ADV 390
Following a pattern that has been evident in recent months, KTM has improved its MoM sales, even though YoY sales continue to be negative. The company sold a total of 3,246 units in July, which is better than 1,938 units sold in June 2020. However, YoY sales are down -39.60%, as compared to 5,374 units sold in July last year.
    KTM domestic sales

In July 2020, the company’s top selling bike was KTM 125 (Duke + RC). A total of 1,847 units were sold, which is YoY loss of -33.70%. Sales during the same period last year stood at 2,786 units. As may be recalled, KTM 125 had emerged as the bestselling KTM soon after its launch in 2019. With KTM 125, the company has been able to target a new segment of customers who want an entry-level performance bike. Superior performance coupled with competitive pricing is a key reason for the growing popularity of KTM 125.
At number two in the list is KTM 200 (Duke + RC) with 937 units sold in July. YoY sales have almost halved, as compared to 1,749 units sold in July last year. The first KTM to be launched in India, KTM 200 had once been the top selling KTM in the country. However, things changed after KTM 125 was introduced in the Indian market.

KTM India sales, exports – July 2020
KTM 390 (Duke + RC + ADV) is placed at third place with a total of 254 units sold in July. YoY loss stands at -26.59%, which is the least of all KTM bikes in July. KTM exports July 2020
While domestic sales continue to be a disappointment, KTM has a lot to cheer as far as exports are concerned. That’s because exports have almost trebled, from 3,691 units in July last year to 10,430 units in July 2020. YoY growth stands at 182.58%.
