DeLorean EVolved Concept Previews the Return of the Infamous Sports Car

DeLorean’s rebirth kicks off with a sports car concept called the EVolved.Like its forebear, the new car comes with gullwing doors.Look for the car to make its formal, physical debut in August.More than four decades after the original DMC DeLorean went on sale, a new iteration of the gullwing-door-equipped sports car is due to hit the scene. Dubbed the EVolved, the reborn sports car keeps its forebear’s trick door design but ditches its blocky styling. Though the vehicle pictured above is only a concept, the company assured us its styling is close to that of the forthcoming production model.

The EVolved’s powertrain is a far different animal relative to the low-powered rear-mounted six-cylinder of the original DeLorean, as the new car relies on electricity for motivation. The company’s mum on specifics, but it is aiming for at least 300 miles of driving range.

    DeLorean

From what we can see in these images, the EVolved appears to go the route of a grand-touring vehicle. While it has only two doors, the openings seem wide enough to make entering and exiting the rear seats an easy feat. The Italdesign-penned bodywork, meanwhile, looks to emphasize the car’s aerodynamics, with the concept’s canopy seemingly mimicking the basic style of an airplane fuselage, getting narrower as it goes from the A-pillars toward the rear end. It’s a detail that also affords this new DeLorean a set of wide and voluptuous rear fenders. Like most modern vehicles, it looks like the EVolved’s cabin centers around a pair of big screens: one in the instrument panel, the other an infotainment system that appears to rise up from the center console and onto the dashboard.DeLorean still plans to formally debut the EVolved concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August, so consider these images an appetizer for the time being. Nevertheless, we’re eager to see the EVolved in person, and hopefully, as a purchasable production vehicle.

Electric Scooters, CNG Cars At Zero Regn, Taxes – In W Bengal

West Bengal announces exemption of registration fees, Motor Vehicle tax and additional taxes for EVs and CNG vehicles from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2024Image for referenceBetween ex-sh price and on road price, lies a convoluted path burdened by taxes and additional costs. All borne by the buyer. Such additional charges are being waived to some degree by various states. This aligns with government policy that outlines a positive shift to personal EVs by the end of the decade.West Bengal is the latest state to join this dialogue. An announcement made points to exemption of registration fees, MV and additional taxes. This is applicable to all CNG vehicles, and e2Ws and electric cars. Any new electric scooter, electric motorcycle, electric car, electric two wheeler, electric rickshaw, electric three wheeler or CNG vehicle purchased in the period from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2024 – will not have to pay any taxes. On Road Prices ReducedA waiver of this nature translates to decreased on road price for a wide variety of sustainable energy vehicles. Vehicles already registered in this fiscal, the financial incentive is being issued as an extension of tax validity equating to the exact number of days for which tax has been paid. The move incentivizes investments in battery operated electric vehicles. In the long run, a large-scale shift would eventually reduce dependency on petrol/diesel. And is part of the budget announcement spanning FY23 and FY24.Where a transition to EVs is concerned, there is a segment that powered through despite its unorganised nature in West Bengal. The electric rickshaw has been serving suburbs and despite initial resistance from unions and government, the Toto refused to slow down, and silently powered through. However, that’s pretty much where the state’s EV commitment has remained in recent years.New Tata Nexon EV MaxCar ownership in West BengalThe state has multiple other unique transport patterns. For one, it has a dependable Metro network. The public commute bus service runs across distances. Trains carry large populaces from the suburbs to the capital. Even its ageing yellow and black taxis operate efficiently. And this is easily supported by the state’s dependence on passenger cars. Reliance on cycles is high. The National Family Health Survey – 5 (2019-21) also points to two-wheeler ownership at 28.5 percent. Car ownership in the state is as low as 2.8 percent. So, for a state that respectfully values its wide-ranging public transport system, are citizens going to make a transition sheerly based on a waiver? This can only be answered in 2024.Electric vehicles in West BengalFor now, as with many new developments, New Town is the pilot city for new initiatives, including those aligned to electric vehicles. The capital is no stranger to electric transport. Back in 1902, Kolkata introduced its first tram line, a sheer electric transport brilliance. 120 years later, only two lines still operate to support nostalgia over profitability. So, while a waiver on new electric vehicle purchases is the way to go, maybe introducing subsidies on electric tram fares could be considered, phase by phase. It would get a large population that depends on public transport to support electric network seamlessly. As it stands, the city took apart an opined to be space occupying network that was truly pollution free transpiration, one cobblestone after another, one tramcar after another. Not to mention poor management and maintenance. De-reservation of tram tracks dealt a two prong blow. Everyone could use them making them good ole tramcars even slower. And commuter safety became a concern cause getting on and off a tram in city traffic became deliberately difficult. As of January 2021, West Bengal Transport Department reported 35,999 e-Rickshaws, 1,240 e2Ws. There were 93 electric cars and 93 electric buses. 24 electric trucks made it to the low EV count. At the time, there were less that 6k petrol hybrid cars, and less than 4.3k diesel hybrid cars. But because electric is the next big thing, EV purchases are being supported. This in a city that has shown no real interest in buying cars. More

New KTM 390 ADV Variant Spied – Upcoming RE Himalayan 450 Rival?

It is also possible that one of the models could be a new bike from KTM-owned Spanish motorcycle company GasGas2023 KTM 390 Adventure – New Variant Spied? In the Adv segment, KTM already offers the R variants with its higher capacity 1290 Super Adventure and 890 Adventure. These are equipped with additional features that make them suitable for hardcore off-roading. As 390 Adventure is popular here, there’s a possibility it could receive the R/Rally variant.A number of prominent changes can be seen on the test mules. Most of these are aimed at improving the bike’s off-roading capabilities. For example, there’s the raised front mudguard and knobby tyres at front and rear. The bikes have wire-spoke wheels, as compared to alloy wheels used with standard 390 Adventure. Images are credited to BMH-Images, Bernhard M. Hoehne.KTM 390 Adventure R/Rally featuresAnother key change is a compact underbelly exhaust, as compared to the upswept exhaust used on the standard model. One of the test mules utilizes a half fairing and is equipped with a tall, flat visor. It has also been equipped with a large bash plate. The test mules can be seen with a vertically stacked dual-LED headlamp setup that seems quite radical from a design perspective. It is likely to offer more focused illumination, thereby improving safety in dark conditions. Some features are common to both bikes such as the new boomerang-shaped swingarm. In comparison, standard 390 Adventure utilizes a flat swingarm. TFT instrument console looks largely the same as used with the standard model. However, the placement of the console seems higher on the test mules. Riding ergonomics appear to be the same as that of the existing 390 Adventure.2023 KTM 390 Adventure – New Variant Spied? On both test mules, the tail section is currently missing much of its outer skin. Even the fairing appears to be a temporary unit that will be revised along the development process. These factors indicate that 390 Adventure R/Rally variant could still be several months from launch.KTM 390 Adventure R/Rally engineEngine is likely to be the same as current 390 Adventure. The bike is powered by a 373 cc, liquid cooled motor that generates 44 hp of max power at 9,000 rpm and 37 Nm of peak torque at 7,000 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. It is possible that the engine on R/Rally variant may be tweaked to suit the bike’s off-roading character.Suspension system is also expected to be updated, allowing for longer travel. Some adjustments could be made to the braking apparatus as well. In its present form, 390 Adventure has WP APEX USD front forks and WP APEX rear monoshock suspension. Braking duties are performed by 320 mm disc at front and 230 mm disc at rear. The bike has dual-channel Bosch ABS with cornering function and offroad mode.2023 KTM 390 Adventure – New Variant Spied? As adventure biking is gaining popularity here, it is possible that KTM could introduce 390 Adventure R/Rally variant in India. One of the key rivals will be upcoming Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. There could be competition from Honda as well in the form of a new middleweight adventure bike. Evidence to that comes from recently trademarked ‘NX’ and ‘NX500’ names in Europe. More

Ather Electric Scooter Fire Incident At Showroom – Official Update

Ather electric scooter fire incident is attributed to vehicle that was brought in for servicing following an accident – fact finding points to crack on battery pack casingAther Electric Scooter Fire IncidentRecent electric scooter fires are a bane. But, hopefully one that strengthens the path for e2Ws. The current focus on electric scooter fires seem odd especially since ICE vehicle fires to date have never been scrutinized this closely. This of course is owing to multiple reasons. One of them being the fact that social media as a platform didn’t perform quite as well when it comes to amplifying matters. And one couldn’t quite so easily interact with authorities and/or manufacturers. The world today is open to more transparent and prompt communication. At the same time, online grievances and opinions are manifold. So, are trolls. So, while the concern is legit, and warrants meaningful discussion, not all online chatter is meaningful. Company statements are tricky to dissect accurately, and most times, they are all that is available. Following the recent spate of electric scooter fires, multiple manufacturers have gone on record to discuss specified fire incidents in brief.Ather Electric Scooter FireThis past week, there’s been a report of a Hero Photon electric scooter. The manufacturer was quick to point out that that the fire is the outcome of a short circuit at the socket. The scooter was being charged overnight. The other fire in focus was an incident in Chennai at Ather’s dealership in Chennai. A detailed statement a day later elaborates on what unfolded.Ather Electric Scooter Fire – Official UpdateThe company says, the fire erupted in a vehicle that had been brought to the service centre following an accident. Once dust was washed off the vehicle, the team realized there was a crack in the battery pack top casing when removing body panels. This crack is likely an outcome of the accident. Because of the wash, water entered the battery pack. The company also noticed a few screws around the battery had been replaced. Their varying lengths could have heightened stress on the battery top panel.A report earlier in the week, which puts blame on cheap materials that don’t meet quality criteria. The probe result was furnished by CFEES of the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Electric scooter fire incidents led to notices being sent to multiple manufacturers. Incident explanations are sought from Boom Motors, Pure EV, Ola Electric, Okinawa Autotech, and Jitendra EV. With the scooter fire reports from this week, due diligence and audits for the same are expected.Audits and due diligenceWhile the e2W industry is seeing growth across segments, in terms of sales volume, it still is a small segment. One that sees improved interest. With EVs touted to be the next big arena of mobility, it’s essential that the groundwork is strong. So, while outcomes of national probes of ICE vehicles have hardly been a matter of public discussion, for EVs the rules have changed.Honest and open discussions will help keep the faith in the growing EV industry. Detailed scrutiny will help correct faultlines. This is more than essential if the country is to reach its EV transition goals by 2030. More

    How We'd Spec It: 2023 BMW iX M60 and 2022 iX xDrive50

Like most automakers nowadays, BMW is busy electrifying its lineup, having just introduced the i4 sedan and iX SUV for the 2022 model year. The iX is a mid-size SUV in the same vein as the popular BMW X5, except the electric version has a much more polarizing appearance. While every iX has dual electric motors and a 105.2-kWh battery pack, power output and estimated range vary between the two available models.

The regular xDrive50 has a combined 516 horsepower and between 305 and 324 miles of range. It starts at $84,195. The higher-performance M60 model joins the iX lineup for the 2023 model year, bringing 610 total horses and between 274 and 288 miles of range. It starts at $106,095. Our editors were asked to spec their ideal iX, and while most of us prioritized range and value, someone emptied their fake bank account for ultimate power and prestige. Using BMW’s online configurator, which currently only features the 2022 xDrive50 and 2023 M60, this is how we’d buy the new iX: Drew Dorian’s $87,495 2022 iX xDrive 50

    BMW

    BMW

I haven’t driven the more powerful M60 model yet, but I enjoyed my time in the xDrive50 and found it to be plenty quick. I’d go with that model and save my money for some slick upgrades. First, I’d pick the $2800 Sport styling package, which adds 21-inch wheels, clear taillamp lenses, and replaces the black front and rear bumpers with body-colored ones. The no-cost Blue Ridge Mountain Metallic paint looks very nice, and it matches the iX’s optional $500 Stonegrey Microfiber and Wool interior upholstery. Selecting this cloth interior scheme also adds lovely rose gold interior accents. Lastly, I’d add the $2300 Convenience package, which includes a head-up display with augmented reality for the navigation system, a 360-degree exterior camera system, and BMW’s Parking Assistant Plus feature. All in my ideal iX xDrive50i would cost $87,495, which sounds like a lot, but in my experience, this EV SUV is well worth the money. —Drew Dorian Caleb Miller’s $92,270 2022 iX xDrive50

    BMW

    BMW

The BMW iX certainly isn’t my favorite car to look at, but after recently spending some time in its sumptuous interior and experiencing the hushed and relaxing ride, the iX is growing on me. I opted for the iX xDrive50, since 516 horsepower in a chunky SUV is more than enough. Plus, with the $84,195 starting price, I was able to splurge on options without even coming close to the M60’s $106,095 base price. For the exterior trim, I went for the $2800 Sport option, which adds the more aggressive front bumper design from the M60 as well as dark clear taillights in place of traditional red units. While it also includes 21-inch bi-color wheels, I ended up spending $950 to replace these with 22-inch dark wheels that have a more intricate design and give the iX a more assertive stance. I painted my iX in the vibrant Phytonic Blue Metallic, a no-cost option. Inside, I chose the $500 Stonegrey Microfiber and Wool Blend upholstery, the same spec we had in the vehicle I drove, which is soft to the touch and provides the cabin with a tranquil aura. I also dropped $4000 on the Premium package, since my luxury SUV better have a head-up display and surround-view cameras. The package comes with useful perks such as augmented reality navigation, Parking Assistant Plus, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and multi-function seats. I could do without the interior camera, gesture control, and weird fake driving sounds, but they’re part of the package. I didn’t upgrade to the $3400 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system because I think the 18-speaker Harman Kardon setup will serve me just fine. All told, my iX xDrive50 came in at $92,270. —Caleb MillerAustin Irwin’s $94,675 2022 iX xDrive50

    BMW

    BMW

The price difference between the 610-hp iX M60 with an EPA-rated 288 miles of range versus the 516-hp iX xDrive50 with an estimated 324 miles of range isn’t too far from the starting price of the Nissan Leaf. Comparing their estimated acceleration times, the M60’s 3.6-second (mfr’s claim) to 60 mph seems less worth it considering how the $21,900 difference nets you a quicker 5700-pound SUV by only eight-tenths of a second. The only thing dorkier than the iX’s faux kidney grilles is paying extra for qualities that will only diminish driving range. I’d rather stick with the already elegant basics of the iX xDrive50 Shadowline base model with 20-inch wheels. Plus, opting for the 21-inchers would punch the EPA range down by 20 miles. Of the colors that don’t require an additional equipment package and bigger wheels, the no-cost Blue Ridge Mountain Metallic strikes a balance between paint not offered on Teslas and ones once available for the Pontiac Aztek. I’d spring for the Amido olive-leaf tanned perforated leather interior ($2450) with Titanium Bronze trim because I like the way the bronze highlights the seat, window, and door lock controls in an otherwise gothic cabin. The optional Premium package ($4000) is a no-brainer. This package includes the 18-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system, a HUD and enhanced navigation, a three-dimensional 360-degree camera, front massaging seats, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Strangely, front ventilated seats ($500) aren’t part of either Convenience or Premium packages for the iX Drive50, but are a must-have to keep the bottom of my midwestern, body-by-Costco physique cooled. Heated front seats are standard. Finally, I’d add the optional Icon Adaptive Laserlight headlights ($1000) just to see if they’re bright enough to cook a white-tailed deer before it crosses the road. At $94,675, my iX xDrive50 plugs in at $11,420 less than the more powerful M60 sans options. —Austin IrwinEric Stafford’s $113,920 2023 iX M60

    BMW

    BMW

In my opinion, the only way to make the BMW iX look like something I’d actually want to be seen in is to spec it in Black Sapphire metallic free of charge. The sinister shade successfully masks the mid-size SUV’s awkward appearance, and when matched with the optional bi-color bronze 22-inch rims and obligatory bronze exterior trim ($1450 altogether), the iX legitimately looks badass. While this look can be closely replicated on the 516-hp xDrive50 model, I’d gladly dole out the extra $21,900 for the mightier M60 version. Why spend more on an EV only to give up as much as 50 miles of estimated driving range? Two words: power and prestige. With its dual electric motors at maximum strength, the M60 generates 610 horsepower and 811 pound-feet of torque, increases of 94 and 247, respectively, versus the xDrive50. That should launch this nearly three-ton electric brick to 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds (C/D estimate), quick enough to embarrass any Tesla Model Y and Model X owners. I also want any BMW I buy to wear M badges, even if the chassis upgrades on the M60 only amount to slightly stiffer front and rear anti-roll bars. The only bummer about the M60 is that it’s not available with the beautiful Stone Gray microfiber and wool-blend upholstery found on the xDrive50. Instead, I’d settle for the rich-looking Castanea Chestnut leather option ($3500). It also seems silly not to spend another $1900 on the package that’ll let my iX park itself and even change lanes on its own, in certain situations. Finally, I might as well spare no expense and drop a measly $1150 on the Luxury package. Maybe its soft-close doors will encourage my friends to stop slamming them shut. Either way, I’ll definitely like looking at the open-pore wood trim and touching the glass controls. Final cost? $113,920. —Eric Stafford

Chetak’s best was in January, with sales at 1,268 units. If iQube can maintain the momentum, it could register higher sales than Chetak in CY2022. Bajaj is also working on launching updated Chetak sometime later this year. More
