    Motorcycles in 200-500cc range posted a 6.87 percent YoY growth in July 2022 while MoM sales dipped 7.04 percent with Royal Enfield 350 cc models taking top spotsNew Bajaj Pulsar 250Motorcycles in the 200-500 cc segment posted a YoY growth of 6.87 percent to 55,329 units in July 2022 from 51,774 units sold in July 2021 relating to a 3,555 unit volume growth. MoM sales on the other hand dipped 7.04 percent from 59,521 units sold in June 2022.The list was topped by 5 models from Royal Enfield with the Classic 350 being the best-selling model, surpassing every other model on this list by a significant margin. RE Classic 350 sales increased YoY by 37.50 percent to 23,223 units in July 2022, up from 16,890 units sold in July 2021. This was a 6,333 unit volume growth. MoM sales, however, dipped 8.66 percent from 25,425 units sold in June 2022.The RE Classic 350 currently commands a 41.97 percent share. No other model on this list saw sales above the 10,000 unit mark.200cc To 500cc Motorcycles Sales Jul 2022At No. 2 was the RE Meteor 350cc with YoY and MoM de-growth at 7.85 percent and 6.44 percent respectively to 8,088 units in July 2022 from 8,777 units sold in July 2021 and 8,645 units sold in June 2022. It was followed by the RE Bullet 350 that posted a YoY de-growth of 8.45 percent to 6.530 units from 7,133 units sold in July 2021 while MoM sales improved by 10.81 percent from 5,893 units sold in June 2022.It was the RE Electra that came in next with 3,853 units sold in the past month, up 30.65 percent from 2,949 units sold in July 2021. MoM sales however, dipped 11.69 percent over 4,363 units sold in June 2022. Himalayan sales increased YoY by 26.04 percent to 3,441 units in July 2022 but fell by 23.77 percent from 4,541 units sold in June 2022. Share percentage also fell from 7.58 percent held in June 2022 to 6.22 percent in the past month. Royal Enfield gears up for more offerings in the 350-650cc segment with the new Bullet 350, Super Meteor 650, Shotgun 650 along with the Himalayan 450 which could all launch over the next 1-2 years.200cc to 500cc Motorcycle Sales July 2022 vs July 2021 (YoY)Honda H’ness CB350 was at No. 6 with sales of 2,827 units, up 23.72 percent over 2,285 units sold in July 2021. Sales of KTM 250 fell 15.47 percent YoY to 847 units, down from 1,002 units sold in July 2021 while MoM sales improved by 288.53 percent from 218 units sold in June 2022. It was followed by the Bajaj Pulsar 250/22F which also fell on a YoY basis by 80.45 percent to 681 units from 3,484 units sold in July 2021. MoM sales were higher by 74.17 percent from 391 units sold in June 2022.FZ25 sales dipped 37.06 percent YoY and 22.29 percent MoM to 523 units in July 2022. KTM 390 and Dominar 400 both posted a YoY de-growth of 26.92 percent and 0.49 percent respectively to 494 units and 409 units in July 2022 while MoM sales improved from 374 units and 214 units sold in June 2022.Dominar, Gixxer, Apache Sales Jul 2022There were also 350 units of the Suzuki V Strom 250 sold in the past month, a 7.89 percent MoM de-growth from 380 units sold in June 2022. There were also 302 units of Dominar 250,  294 units of Apache 310 and 213 units of CB300R sold in the past month along with 127 units of the Ninja 300 and 113 units of the Avenger 220.     Traffic Fatalities Drop Slightly in Q2 of 2022, First Reduction in Two Years

    Government figures for traffic fatalities show a higher number in the first half of 2022 than in 2021, but that’s not the whole story.After seven quarters of continued growth, traffic fatalities dropped in the second quarter of 2022.To bring about Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s call to prevent as many deaths as possible, NHTSA has been updating—or will update—rules around safety features in new cars as well as considering factors outside the car, such as bikers and pedestrians.Last year, 2021, experts recorded the most traffic fatalities in the U.S. in 16 years. The 42,915 people who died last year might represent a new high-water mark if the predicted trend for 2022 proves itself out and continues.Stay Safe Out ThereThis month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that its early estimates of traffic fatalities for the first half of 2022 were up a tiny bit, around 0.5 percent. Compared to the first half of 2021, when an estimated 20,070 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes, the first half of 2022 saw a projected 20,175 fatalities. That’s obviously an increase, but NHTSA found good news hiding in that higher number: the second quarter of 2022 represents the first decline in deaths in almost two years. The number had been steadily climbing since the third quarter of 2020, or for seven straight quarters.”These deaths are preventable, not inevitable, and we should act accordingly,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. He added that even with the decline, NHTSA still has work to do—and is doing it—to protect all road users. How to Make Streets Safer?For example, Secretary Buttigieg unveiled a National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS) in January. The NRSS states that almost 95 percent of the transportation deaths that occur in America happen on streets, roads, and highways, compared to traveling by things like trains or planes. To reduce the number of road fatalities, NHTSA is helping states develop a “complete streets” project and is also considering making changes to new-car rules to make them even safer than today’s models.So far this year, NHTSA has also taken steps to improve child safety seat test standards and increase underride protection on semi-truck trailers. The agency also found that to combat the greater risk to women in crashes, it helps to make crash test dummies that are more accurately represent both male and female bodies.Understanding the ProcessMore Driver-Assist Tech?NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program might also be updated by adding four more recommended advanced driver assistance system technologies: blind-spot detection, blind spot intervention, lane-keeping assistance, and pedestrian automated emergency braking. NHTSA said it will update the NCAP over the next 10 years and will “potentially incorporate consideration of the vehicle’s safety features for people walking or biking around the car.”Last week, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said all new vehicles should come with alcohol impairment detection systems.     40,000 Ford F-150 Trucks May Be Missing Their Blue Oval Badges: WSJ

    The Wall Street Journal reports that Ford expects to be sitting on 40,000 to 45,000 trucks at the end of the third quarter because it doesn’t have enough badges to put on them.The problem might not be related to the supply-chain disruptions caused by the pandemic. Instead, the cause might be a chemical spill in Michigan last month by Tribar, a company that has supplied badges to Ford in the past and needed to limit operations temporarily.Ford reportedly considered using 3D printing technology to provide short-term replacement badges but didn’t think the quality would be good enough.When someone in Springfield pranked Superintendent Chalmers by removing the hood emblem from his 1979 Honda Accord, he complained, “That’s how people know it’s a Honda.” Good for a laugh on The Simpsons, but it’s unlikely that anybody will fail to recognize the bestselling vehicle in the U.S. for decades if it doesn’t say “Ford.” Still, the automaker is holding back tens of thousands of new F-series pickup trucks because the automaker doesn’t have enough badges.Ford’s Good NamePeople familiar with the situation told the Wall Street Journal that the shortage applies to the famous blue oval Ford badges as well as those that identify the model. A Ford spokesperson told the Journal that some vehicle shipments are still happening as planned and that it is retrofitting vehicles that don’t have the correct badges before delivering them to dealers. Ford said it expects to have between 40,000 and 45,000 pickups waiting for badges at the end of the third quarter. Ford reportedly considered 3D printing to make temporary badges but dismissed the idea because it could not guarantee the short-term replacements would look as good. The company declined to comment on the 3D printing proposal to the paper. We have asked Ford for more details about these issues.Ford, and other automakers, had previously held back shipments of numerous models because of a lack of silicon semiconductor chips, which have been difficult for some automakers to obtain for their products since 2020 because of the pandemic. But the lack of badges might not be directly tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Journal noted that one of Ford’s badge suppliers is Tribar Technologies. That name likely rings a bell for readers in mid-Michigan, because that’s where Tribar “released several thousand gallons of a liquid containing 5 percent hexavalent chromium into the sewer system” in August, according to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. Hexavalent chromium is a form of the metallic element chromium and has been shown to “cause a number of adverse health effects through ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation,” the MDEGLE said.As part of the chemical cleanup, Tribar was forced to “limit operations” in August, the Journal said. This might have caused a drop in the supply of new badges. Both Ford and Tribar confirmed their badge-supplying relationship, but neither would talk to the paper about the current situation. Powered by engines in the 125-373cc range, these bikes have each found a distinct fan following both in domestic and export markets.KTM recently updated their Duke range with new colour schemes each distinct to the Duke lineup while the company could also introduce the RC 390 and RC 200 in MotoGP factory colours sometime in October, just ahead of the festive season.KTM Domestic Sales August 2022KTM sales in domestic markets in August 2022 stood at 4,255 units, down 3.05 percent YoY as against 4,389 units sold in August 2021. This was a 134 unit volume de-growth. Sales however improved by 43.65 percent on a MoM basis from 2,962 units sold in July 2022.KTM 200 (Duke + RC) models were at the top of sales charts with 1,757 units sold in the past month, up 23.04 percent compared to 1,428 units sold in August 2022. Share percentage was at 41.29 percent. MoM sales grew by 9.33 percent from 1,607 units sold in July 2022 when share had stood at 54.25 percent.KTM India Sales Aug 2022Sales of KTM 250 (Duke + ADV) dipped 2.70 percent YoY to 1,405 units from 1,444 units sold in August 2022 while MoM sales improved by 65.88 percent from 847 units sold in July 2022. Share percentage increased from 28.60 to 33.02 percent MoM.But 390 (ADV + Duke + RC) saw a 9.21 percent YoY growth to 830 units last month from 760 units sold in August 2021 while MoM sales were higher by 68.02 percent from 494 units sold in July 2022. There was the KTM 125cc at the bottom of domestic sales charts with 263 units sold in the past month, down 65.26 percent over 757 units sold in August 2021 while MoM sales grew significantly by 1778.57 percent from just 14 units sold in July 2022.KTM India Exports Aug 2022In the export market, KTM sales grew by 216.98 percent YoY to 8,907 units from 2,810 units sold in August 2021. MoM sales were also higher by 17.17 percent from 7,602 units sold in July 2022. It was the KTM 390 that posted the most exports with 3,672 units shipped in the past month, up 818 percent when compared to just 400 units exported in August 2021. MoM exports however, dipped marginally by 0.65 percent from 3,696 units shipped in July 2022.KTM India Exports Aug 2022KTM 200 saw higher exports both on YoY (38.99 percent) and MoM (18.64 percent) basis in August 2022 to 2,183 units. There had been 1,582 units and 1,840 units shipped in August 2021 and July 2022 respectively. KTM 125 exports stood at 2,092 units in the past month leading to a 107.13 percent MoM growth from 1,010 units sold in July 2022. 250cc exports increased 15.94 percent YoY to 960 units over 828 units shipped in August 2021 while MoM exports dipped by 9.09 percent from 1,056 units sold in July 2022.KTM India Total Aug 2022Total sales of KTM India improved YoY and MoM by 82.83 percent and 24.59 percent respectively. Sales in August 2022 had stood at 13,162 units up from 7,199 units sold in August 2021 while in July 2022 the company had sold a total of 10,564 units. It was the KTM 390 that saw the most sales at 4,502 units, up 288.10 percent from 1,160 units sold in August 2021 while MoM sales grew by 7.45 percent from 4,190 units sold in July 2022.KTM India Total (Sales + Exports) Aug 2022KTM 200 and 250 sales increased by 30.90 percent and 4.09 percent respectively on a YoY basis and by 14.30 percent and 24.28 percent MoM to 3,940 units and 2,365 units sold in August 2022.     Royal Enfield 650cc Scrambler Spied With Single Exhaust Setup

    After expanding its 350cc range, Royal Enfield is looking to aggressively target the 650cc segment by launching multiple new bikesRoyal Enfield 650cc Scrambler SpiedWith 650 twins emerging as popular options in domestic and international markets, there seems ample scope to accommodate more body styles. Based on sightings of test mules, there are at least three new 650cc Royal Enfield bikes under development. Latest spy shots are from UK, where a 650cc scrambler version has been spotted on road tests.It is possible that Royal Enfield’s 650cc scrambler could be launched as ‘Constellation’. This name was used earlier by Royal Enfield for its 700cc bike sold in North America between 1958 and 1963. In India, both ‘Constellation’ and ‘Royal Enfield Constellation’ trademarks have been registered by Eicher Motors.Royal Enfield 650cc scrambler spiedRoyal Enfield 650cc scrambler shares several of its features with other 650cc test mules spotted earlier on road tests. Retro styling is apparent, with features such as round headlamp, rear view mirrors, turn indicators and rear tail lamp. The bike has a dual-pod instrument cluster, which is likely to be same as 650 twins. The latest creation from German aftermarket tuning company Brabus would be a great choice—along with its over-the-top styling and a prodigious power output, the P 900 Rocket Edition will also be limited to a production run of just ten units. The P 900 Rocket Edition is based on Brabus’s XLP pickup truck conversion of the Mercedes-AMG G63, with a large, boxy four-door cabin and a stubby bed. Powering this beast is a twin-turbocharged 4.5-liter V-8 blasting out 900 horsepower and 922 pound-feet of torque, routing that through a nine-speed automatic. That’s enough oomph to fire this Rocket to 62 mph in claimed 3.7 seconds and on to a 174 mph top speed.The P 900 Rocket Edition has one mean-looking mug, with blocky vents in the bumper and a carbon-fiber front splitter with red end plates. The carbon grille also includes red-accented strakes and is even backlit red at night, creating an ominous, bloodthirsty appearance. The fender flares have also been redesigned with protruding vents sporting a carbon weave, and lo and behold, there is more carbon fiber adorning the tailgate, which sits above a small rear diffuser.More Bonkers Brabus G-wagensThe side-exit valve-controlled exhaust—decked out in carbon fiber with red ambient lighting—is said to deliver “earth-shattering sounds.” Owners might want to be careful with their right foot if they find themselves in one of the six California cities with camera-automated exhaust noise enforcement, or at least set the adjustable sound management to the “Coming Home” mode. The P 900 pickup rides on ginormous 24-inch Monoblock Z “Aero-Disc” wheels, which are hooked up to an aluminum coilover suspension that can adjust the ride height by 1.8 inches.The interior is just as crazy as the exterior, with oodles of black leather sporting a so-called “seashell diamond” quilting pattern, which even spreads to the footwells. “Rocket Red” accents appear on more than 206 interior components, such as the A/C vents, seat adjustment controls, and gas and brake pedals. The cabin also, of course, features its fair share of carbon fiber. That’s what the crew found out this week with a challenge to find something from the land of brie for la somme généreuse of $50,000. They went everywhere but France to do it.Road & Track senior editor John Pearley Huffman headed to Belgium for a chunk of French history: a Panhard Dyna Z rarer than a truffle and no more pleasant to look at. Panhard was an innovator, creating some of the earliest clutch pedals and steering wheels, building the first series production car, and inventing us the Panhard Rod.
