1992 VW GTI Is Our Bring a Trailer Auction Pick of the Day

This rare and pristine 53,000-mile 1992 Volkswagen GTI is a near match for our editor-in-chief’s first car.The last of the second-generation GTI 16Vs, this 2505-pound hatchback is powered by a raucous 134-hp 2.0-liter four.Complete with the factory installed BBS wheels and Recaro seats, this original example is currently being auctioned until Saturday, January 28.It’s said you can’t go back, but then you see your first car being auctioned off on Bring a Trailer and you start to question that adage. Staring down at me on my laptop screen is a box-shaped piece of my past: a 1992 Volkswagen GTI 16V with 52,000 miles. It matches my first car down to the Tornado Red paint—other paint colors included white, black, and Montana Metallic, a teal-like hue. Okay, it’s not exactly like mine. My 1990 model lacked the integrated third brake light and had black trim around the rear window. But mine had the same big-bolstered Recaro seats with electronic height control and two-piece BBS RMII cross-spoke wheels that had the look of the far pricier three-piece BBS RS wheels. The last of the second-generation GTIs, the U.S.-spec models were assembled in VW’s plant in Mexico. Earlier second-gen Golf and GTIs came out of the company’s Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, plant, which shuttered in 1988. Early 16Vs arrived in 1987 and featured a 1.8-liter four with 123 horsepower. In 1990, the engine grew to 1984 cc or 2.0 liters, and horsepower rose to 134, with 133 pound-feet of torque at the ready. VW added the four-headlight grille and big bumpers that helped modernize the car. A very high 10.8:1 compression ratio meant the four thirsted for premium, a recommendation that our sister publication Road & Track missed when it tested one in 1991; C/D never tested one. Running on 87 and with an R&T tester at the wheel, the 2505-pound 16V hit 60 in 8.4 seconds (VW claimed 7.8 seconds). The engine is rough, even by the standards of 30 years ago. Hitting the 5800-rpm power peak sounds abusive, and punching the 6300-rpm redline isn’t much of a celebration either. Shifts are light and positive, and the gearing is short. On the highway, the four settles into a steady 4000-rpm buzz at 80 mph. Easily the best part of the late-GTI 16V is the handling. Ride quality is harsh and the structure is lacking, but lots of information flows up from the 195/50R-15 tires to the four-spoke steering wheel. Originally, the 16V would’ve worn Pirelli P600s; the example being auctioned wears far grippier Michelin Pilot Sport 3 summer tires in the original size. GTI NostalgiaThe cornering attitude is classic GTI as the inside rear wheel lifts off the ground. The three-wheel motion isn’t something you notice from behind the wheel; you simply marvel at the joy of hustling this relatively light machine to its limits. In addition to the Recaro chairs, you also get flares. Front fender flares, the black trim coming off the fenders, are wider to cover the big rubber and 6.5-inch-wide wheels—this was heady stuff for a Golf. Behind those wheels are vented front rotors with solid rotors in back. Anti-lock brakes weren’t on the menu; nor were airbags. No airbags meant federally mandated door-mounted belts with separate lap belt. At least they’re fixed and not motorized. Fortunately, this example doesn’t appear ever to have been in any sort of action that involved an airbag. This GTI is hard to fault and far cleaner than the second GTI 16V I purchased in 2002—I’ve tried to go back before. I sold it a couple of years later when someone left a note on it in the C/D parking lot. Even in the early ’90s, these were rare cars and cost roughly $15,000, or about $33,000 in today’s money. Today, they’re even harder to find as most gave up their lives to hard and fun-filled miles. In a recent column, I wrote about how the spirit and joy of the Toyota GR Corolla reminded me of my first 16V GTI. I believe that this GTI will get up to about $45,000, which is about the price of a nicely equipped GR Corolla. Go back or go forward? I’d say you can’t go wrong with either choice. More

Take a Peek at the Electric Ram Revolution's (Sort of) Third-Row Seats

When the electric Ram Revolution concept was revealed, its rearmost jump seats made it a three-row pickup truck. Now, new photos provide a closer look at the Ram 1500 EV’s third-row seating, which may be useful or useless. Based on the images from the concept, the two small seats each feature bottoms that fold out of the rear wall.Anyone who has ever sat on the tiny jump seats in the back of an old extended-cab pickus knows they’re not very comfortable. Then again, neither is riding in the back of a truck bed, which can also be unsafe. Well, jump seats might make a comeback based on what we know about the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV concept that was recently revealed. Thankfully—unlike the ones in Uncle Eddie’s rusted-out Chevy S-10—the electric Ram’s rearmost seats are part of a makeshift third row. Newly released photos also give us our best look at them. From the get-go, Ram acknowledged that the Revolution’s third row consisted of jump seats. However, only now do we get to see what they actually look like. As expected, the images show two small seats that fold out of the back wall. It’s the same wall that doubles as a mid-gate that opens up to create an even larger cargo bed. Obviously, this is part of the reason the rearmost row had to be jump seats. The debate that follows is whether or not the Ram EV’s third-row seats are useful or useless. We get why calling it a three-row pickup truck is a bit misleading, and also why some people will likely scoff at the idea of spending extended time back there. However, we think it’s an innovative idea. As in the past, the jump seats aren’t meant to coddle passengers on road trips and whatnot, but rather to provide extra space for people on short stints. After all, we’d rather safely ride inside the electric Ram than risk bouncing around the box. Extra Ram EV ReadingThis content is imported from poll. Not that Yamaha India never had any. As of now, new R7 and MT-09 have been teased and are set to launch. Yamaha might bring in R3 and MT-07 as well, which isn’t officially teased or confirmed. Till then, Yamaha’s motorcycle portfolio starts from FZ and ends with R15.Scooter portfolio starts from Fascino 125 and ends with Aerox 155. Yamaha periodically hikes prices of its vehicles across the range. Last such price hike happened in October 2022. Yamaha India has hiked prices for its vehicles for Jan 2023 as well. Interestingly, the smallest of FZ family, FZ-FI and FZS-FI with 149cc engines gets no price hike. This is Yamaha’s highest-selling vehicle and is understood why it is exempt from this hike.FZ-X gets a hike of Rs. 1,500 with new prices starting from 1,34,400 (ex-sh). Stepping up the price ladder, we have Yamaha MT15. This model has different pricing for varied colours. However, the price increment across the range for MT15 is Rs. 1,000. 2024 Honda Passport, Ridgeline Trailsport Get Real About Off-Roading

The 2024 Honda Passport SUV and Ridgeline truck are scheduled to receive a more rugged set of revisions later this year, Honda confirmed in a media briefing. An updated TrailSport trim will headline the facelift, offering a treatment that will likely include all-terrain tires and steel skid plates, helping the Passport and Ridgeline tackle tougher terrain instead of just pretending to.It seems equally likely that the overhauled 3.5-liter V-6, and 10-speed automatic transmission from the new Pilot will be added as well.Pavement-bound SUVs dressed in off-road garb are all the rage these days, with Honda’s previous TrailSport offerings acting as a prime perpetrator. The newest 2023 Pilot TrailSport, though, transcends the off-road-in-name-only fad, and adds more ground clearance, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and suspension revisions. For the 2024 model year, both the Passport SUV and the Ridgeline truck are scheduled to receive a similarly rugged set of revisions, Honda confirmed in a media briefing. More Trail Blazing HondasHowever, those holding out hope for a hybrid powertrain will be disappointed, as Honda confirmed that neither the Passport nor the Ridgeline will add a gas-electric option for 2024. This solidifies our suspicion that both will receive the updated powertrain from the Pilot. The new 3.5-liter V-6 in that car improves the fuel-delivery system, internals and packaging, ups the horsepower from 280 to 285, and pairs with a new 10-speed automatic transmission instead of the old nine-speed. We haven’t had the chance to put the new powertrain through our usual testing regimen yet, but it doesn’t feel discernibly quicker from our initial drives.Michael Simari|Car and DriverOff-roading is not a foreign concept for the Ridgeline pickup. In fact, Honda has been supporting a desert-racing Ridgeline pickup dating back to 2015. Adding some off-roading chops to the consumer version is a welcome thought, even if the naysayers will complain that most TrailSports will never venture beyond the trailhead. 2024 Honda Civic Confirmed to Add Hybrid Powertrain

Honda has announced that it will launch a hybrid version of the Civic compact car for the 2024 model year. The company says the Civic hybrid will be offered in both sedan and hatchback body styles and will be powered by a version of the powertrain in the larger Accord hybrid.Hybrid models will not replace the gasoline ones currently offered but will be sold alongside them when it hits the market in 2024.The next step in Honda’s plan to hybridize its lineup will come in the form of the 2024 Civic Hybrid, which will be offered both as a sedan and a hatchback. The company’s electrification plans include shifting to an entirely electric lineup by 2040, but increasing its hybrid offerings in the meantime is meant to bridge that gap.We reported last April that Honda had launched a hybrid version of the Civic hatchback in Europe, and speculated that the car would also come stateside to fill the gap left by the discontinued Insight sedan. We’re not sure yet exactly how Honda will adjust the European car’s powertrain, which consists of a 2.0-liter inline-four and two electric motors that combine for 181 horsepower, for the U.S. market. But we can only hope that its output comes closer to the 204 horsepower offered by the closely related hybrid setup in the 2023 Accord hybrid.HondaWhile consumer interest has moved from cars to light trucks and SUVs, Honda still sees sedans and hatchbacks as important parts of its business. “The market has shifted away from passenger cars, but cars still matter to Honda, said Mamadou Diallo, vice president of automobile sales for American Honda. “The cars bring in younger, more multicultural buyers to the brand.”Our Latest Honda TakesThe introduction of a hybrid powertrain to the Civic lineup is part of Honda’s plan to keep those younger buyers coming. Honda plans to open the order books for its all-electric Prologue SUV this year as well, which will be its first step toward the broader electrification of is lineup within the coming years. We expect to find out more about the Civic hybrid closer to the car’s on-sale date, which should be in early 2024. Hero Xoom 110 Specs, Variant Details Leak – Bigger Than Maestro

Looking at the powertrain, size and features, Hero Xoom seems to be a fitting rival to Honda DioImage for illustration purpose onlyHero MotoCorp is the reigning champ in motorcycles with unrivalled dominance. With products like Splendor, Hero has gone from strength to strength in the motorcycle segment. That said, Hero has not seen such success in scooter sales. This segment is dominated by Honda, with its ever-popular Activa range. Not that Hero MotoCorp doesn’t have any scooters. It has Pleasure+ at entry-level price point, Maestro Edge 110 and Destini 125 at mid-level Maestro Edge 125 at top-level. Now, Hero is getting ready to launch a new scooter, called Xoom. It features a design language that is sporty and different from its current crop of scooters.Hero Xoom 110cc Scooter – HomologatedNew Hero Xoom scooter has been homologated and type approved at NCAT. It seems that Hero had previously homologated this under Maestro range and called it Maestro Xoom. But another document confirms that it will drop the Maestro branding, and be called just ‘XOOM’.Hero Xoom will be positioned above Maestro Edge 110. It gets a 110.9 cc single-cylinder engine making 6.0 kW (8 bhp) of power as per NCAT type approval. Hero is launching Xoom in three different variants LX, VX and ZX. While LX and VX are dimensionally identical, ZX is 18 mm wider and weighs 1 kilo more.Upcoming Hero Xoom 110cc Scooter – Specs, VariantsSpeaking of dimensions, Xoom is 1881 mm in length, 717 – 731 mm in width, 1117 mm in height and has a 1300 mm long wheelbase. In comparison with Maestro Edge 110, Hero Xoom is just as wide and weighs just as much. But Xoom is 38 mm longer in length, 71 mm shorter in height and has a 39 mm longer wheelbase. This means Hero is pitching it as a sporty scooter with less bulky body and a longer wheelbase for sorted handling and straight-line stability. While every other Hero scooter currently gets its headlights mounted on the handlebar, Xoom’s headlight unit is placed in its apron. Going by its engine capacity and form factor, Xoom can be a fitting rival to Honda Dio.Specs & FeaturesJust like Pleasure+ and Maestro Edge 110, Hero Xoom is also powered by the same 110.9 cc engine making 6 kW (8 bhp) of power and 8.7 Nm of torque. Mated to a CVT, this powertrain offers decent performance where price and segment are concerned. With switchable i3S tech, engine stop/start feature should ensure better fuel savings too.Hero Xoom Scooter – Name changed from Maestro Xoom to XoomThe new X-shaped LED elements at front and back signify the Xoom name. Features like a fully digital instrument cluster with XTEC connected tech are likely to be offered with top-spec variants. Hero should have offered an external fuel filler facility, which is missing as seen in the first spy shots. Launch price of around Rs. 65-70k (ex-sh) should be reasonable for this scooter. Official prices will be revealed at the launch event on 30th Jan 2023. More

Top 10 Scooters Dec 2022 – Activa, Access, Ola S1, iQube, RayZR

Even though top 10 scooters combined, register a 27% drop MoM – There is a decent growth of 29% in YoY analysisOla Electric ScooterHeavy lifters of scooter world like Activa, Jupiter, Access and the likes usually draw more sales than what was found in December 2022. There is a strong reason for this as people often refrain from buying vehicles at the end of the year. This is a typical pattern exhibited by buyers across various segments almost every year. That could be one of the reasons why Honda Activa sold just 96,451 units. Otherwise, Activa sales easily hover around the 1.75 lakh units mark and go well beyond 2.5 lakh during festive seasons. When compared to 1,04,417 units sold last year and 1,75,084 units sold a month before, Activa fell into the red completely and saw 7.63% YoY drop and sales almost halved MoM with 44.91% decline.Top 10 Scooters December 2022Volume lost YoY stood at 7,966 units and an astounding 78,633 units MoM. Despite a heavy fall like this, Activa still commands 35% market share in the top 10 list, down from 46%% a month before. By selling 39,849 units, TVS Jupiter managed to register a positive growth of just 4.48% and gained 1,707 units in volume over 38,142 units sold in 2021.Just like Activa, Jupiter also saw a decline in MoM accounting to 15.97% and lost 7,573 units in volume and held 14.5% market share. In 3rd spot, we have Suzuki Access with 30,228 units sold in its name. A similar pattern to Jupiter was observed as Access gained 19.2% sales YoY and 4,870 units in volume.Top 10 Scooters Dec 2022 vs Dec 2021 – YoY analysisAccess took a sharp dip at 37.17% MoM and in the process, lost 17,885 units. Market share of Access stood at 11%. Hero Pleasure and Honda Dio seem to have used an Uno reverse card as they both have turned their fortunes around YoY and even registered decent MoM growth. Pleasure sold 23,814 units and Dio sold 20,615 units and took 4th and 5th spots. It must have been very pleasurable for Hero Pleasure in reporting an exceptional 158.71% YoY growth and 20.64% MoM growth. Volume growth stood at 14,609 units YoY, highest on this list, and 4,075 units MoM. Dio registered 138.68% YoY growth and 28.03% MoM growth. Dio gained 11,978 units in volume YoY and 4,513 units MoM.Ola S1, TVS iQube – Electric scooters in Top 10Ola Electric Scooter S1 entered the top 10 list at the No 6 spot with 17,280 retail sales. This was a massive 7100% YoY growth and 5.97% growth MoM. TVS Ntorq at 7th place fell into the red with 16,191 units sold in its name last month. That said, loss in sales is not that high as YoY decline was 3.96% and MoM decline was 4.78%. Volume lost YoY is 668 units and MoM is 812 units. Numbers are highly likely to improve next year.Top 10 Scooters Dec 2022 vs Nov 2022 – MoM analysisWhen compared to 1,212 units sold last year and 10,056 in Nov 2022, TVS iQube sold 11,071 units and gained an exorbitant 813.45% YoY and 10.09% MoM. Yamaha’s first entrant into this list is RayZR 125 and sold 9,713 units. By doing so, RayZR saw 68% YoY growth over 5,781 units sold in 2021 and saw a 10.02% decline in MoM. Volume gain YoY stood at 3,932 units and volume lost MoM was 1,082 units.Hero Destini outdid itself over last year’s performance with 9,123 units and registered 224.89% YoY growth. Sales more than quadrupled when compared to 2,808 units sold a year ago. However, it was downhill for Destini MoM as it sold 15,411 units a month before. In total, top 10 scooters for the month December 2022 accounted for just 2,74,335 units. It wasn’t enough to surpass 3,76,031 units sold by top 10 scooters in November 2022 and hence a 27% MoM decline was observed. That said, December 2022 sales fared better than 2,12,659 units sold in 2021 and hence 29% YoY growth was observed. More
