1993 GMC Typhoon on C4 Corvette Wheels Is Our Bring a Trailer Pick of the Day

Car and DriverBack before performance-oriented SUVs were even a thing, General Motors busted out its crystal ball in the early ’90s with the original hi-po ute, the GMC Typhoon. There’s currently a 1993 model listed on the Bring a Trailer auction site—which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos. While the Typhoon in question is not museum quality, it is a piece of history I could thrash without feeling guilty. The first thing I noticed about the ’93 Typhoon on BaT was its 16-inch C4 Corvette wheels. Personally, I love the look of the turbine-style wheels, which are also known as “salad shooters” by some. Call it blasphemous, but the SUV’s stock 16-inchers never really appealed to me. Plus, I like that the Vette-sourced setup is period correct. The GMC Typhoon’s performance magic comes from its turbocharged 4.3-liter V-6 and traction-optimizing all-wheel-drive system. From the factory, the engine was good for 280 horsepower and a substantial 350 pound-feet of torque. In 1993, the Typhoon’s force-fed V-6 was mightier than the Chevy Camaro’s naturally aspirated LT1 V-8. Think of GMC’s SUV as a forebear to the Hellcat-powered Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.Anyone familiar with the souped-up two-door S-15 Jimmy surely recognizes its cargo-bed-toting twin, the mechanically identical GMC Syclone. The latter’s claim to fame came when we pitted a 1991 example against a ’91 Ferrari 348ts—the pickup truck blew the Italian exotic’s side-straked doors off. Not only did the Syclone’s 5.3-second zero-to-60-mph time beat the Ferrari’s by seven-tenths, but it also won the drag race. The GMC went 1320 feet in 14.1 seconds at 93 mph, while the 348ts took 14.5 ticks at 99 mph. The transitive property suggests the Typhoon would’ve done the same, as the one we tested in 1992 had virtually identical results (its trap speed was actually 2 mph faster).Even by today’s standards, the GMC Typhoon’s test numbers hold up. In fact, its 30-to-50-mph time of 2.9 seconds is a mere 0.2 behind a 2022 Porsche Macan S. For comparison, the Porsche SUV has a 375-hp twin-turbo V-6 (it’s also 500 pounds heavier). The only test results that haven’t aged well for the Typhoon are its lowly cornering grip (0.79 g) and longish 70-mph-to-zero stopping distance (185 feet). However, both those figures would likely improve if it were tested on modern-day summer tires versus the original Firestone Firehawk SVX rubber that’s long been obsolete.Typhoon Tested! It’s hard to say how well the Typhoon that’s up for auction would hold up to track testing. As I mentioned earlier, it’s a little rough around the edges. Although it shows a reasonable 85,000 miles on the clock, it also has some cracked and loose-fitting body cladding, and there appear to be some rust spots underneath. Still, its leather seats aren’t ripped or terribly worn, and, unlike the Syclone, the Typhoon has a back seat so I’d be able to take three friends on the obligatory hell ride. The ’93 Typhoon on Bring a Trailer has a high bid of $11,750, as of this writing, with the no-reserve auction set to end on Thursday. If I had the disposable income (I don’t) and the final bid doesn’t go much higher, I’d be happy to add GMC’s cult classic on C4 Corvette wheels to my collection. This content is imported from poll. Results from Our 16th Lightning Lap Are Almost Here

The 16th running of our annual Lightning Lap is coming to an internet near you on February 7.This year we ran 17 different vehicles, including one convertible, one minivan, plus even one of our fleet-footed editors. Want to set your own times? Join us as we host a Lightning Lap–inspired track event on May 10 at Virginia International Raceway. For 16 years, we’ve used Virginia International Raceway’s demanding 4.1-mile Grand Course loop as a rubric for measuring the overall performance of cars. In that time we’ve tested more than 300 vehicles; some of the highlights include the third Lexus LFA ever built, a chart-topping Mosler MT900S, and even a handful of police cruisers. This year’s group answers some important questions. Curious how the new 670-hp Chevy Corvette Z06 or Honda Civic Type R fared? We’ve got answers. For those wondering how fast “regular” vehicles can lap, we ran our long-term Kia Carnival minivan. We even sent out one of our former track-star editors to see how long it takes to lap VIR on foot. There are plenty more questions answered—and video footage—when we post the full Lightning Lap package on February 7. If you got here via a QR-code link from the print issue, we’re sorry that we’re a little tardy getting the videos up, but those links will be restored when everything publishes on the 7th.Like Thunder, Like Lightning:Your patience will be rewarded with onboard videos of the fastest lap times from each of this year’s 17 entrants. Those videos will also be made available on the Car and Driver YouTube channel and will include commentary by the editors who wrestled at the wheel to achieve the fastest laps. If you think you can do better, we suggest joining us on May 10 at VIR to compete for your own Lightning Lap glory. Without giving away too much, we will say there were a few surprises. A compact performance SUV beat the times of some of our favorite hot hatches of the past. A new EV contender beat the last Tesla time by a landslide. Plus, the Z06 ended up in company with the quickest McLarens and Porsches we’ve ever run. And, uh, were you paying attention earlier when we mentioned we set a time in a minivan? Michael Simari and Marc Urbano|Car and DriverFor the sake of drama, we’ve included a list of every car at this year’s running. If you follow us on Instagram, you’ve likely already spied on what we strapped the Racelogic timing gear onto back in October.2022 Volkswagen GTI2022 Subaru WRX2023 Hyundai Kona N2023 BMW i42023 Audi RS32022 Hyundai Elantra N2023 Honda Civic Type R2022 BMW M240i2023 Toyota GR Supra2023 Toyota GR Corolla2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z062022 Kia Carnival2023 BMW M4 CSL2023 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing2022 Mercedes-AMG SL632023 Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RSMeanwhile, last year’s Lightning Lap is worth checking out. TVS Sales Jan 2023 At 2.75 L – Apache, Jupiter, Ntorq, Raider

Even though TVS sold over 2.75 lakh units, motorcycle sales and total exports took a hit in both YoY and MoM salesImage – MRD VlogsTVS Motor is one of the largest 2W maker around the world. For TVS, India is the biggest market and sales charts show positive growth here. It is in the exports where TVS reported decline. Motorcycles accounted for a total of 1,21,042 units sold last month. The highest selling motorcycles for TVS are Raider and Apache. This wasn’t enough to beat 1,37,630 units sold a year ago and 1,24,705 units sold a month before. Hence TVS’ motorcycles registered a YoY decline of 12.05% and a MoM decline of 2.94%. The volume lost YoY stood at 16,588 and volume lost MoM stood at 3,663 units. Still, Motorcycles are TVS’ primary asset and despite losses, constitute 45.73% market share.TVS Sales Jan 2023Scooters scored good growth in comparison with Jupiter in lead. The YoY target of 80,580 and MoM target of 76,766 units was easily beaten as TVS scooters sold 1,06,537 units in January 2023. Scooters registered 32.21% YoY growth and 38.78% MoM growth and commanded a market share of 40.25% in India. 25,957 units were gained in volume YoY and 29,771 units MoM.iQube has been a great success story for TVS, selling 12,169 units in Jan 2023. There is a massive 695% growth YoY and a decent 9.92% MoM growth. EVs have come a long way as iQube contributed 1,529 units in Jan 2022. TVS is currently the only moped maker in India and sold 37,131 units. Sales grew by 3.35% YoY and by 41.75% MoM.TVS Motor Sales Jan 2023 vs Jan 2022All these accounts for the increment of total 2W sales in the domestic market at 2,16,471 units with 29.01% YoY growth and 34.15% MoM growth. Domestic sales for 2W account for 81.78%, while 2W exports account for 18.22%. Speaking of, TVS exported 48,239 units last month. There was a YoY decline of 44.13% and a MoM decline of 27.24%.This affected the total 2W figure (domestic + exports) which stood at 2,64,710 units in January 2023. TVS saw positive growth of 4.16% YoY and 16.27% MoM. Total 2W volume gained was 10,751 units YoY and 37,044 units MoM.TVS 3W SalesAlong with a 2W portfolio, TVS has an impressive 3W portfolio too. In the domestic market, TVS sold 1,620 3W vehicles. There was a gain of 42.73% YoY and 30.54% MoM and accounted for 15.57% of TVS’ total 3W sales. That said, TVS’ main markets for 3W are situated outside India as exports account for 84.43% of total 3W sales.TVS Motor Sales Jan 2023 vs Dec 2022TVS shipped 8,785 3W vehicles and saw a 23.70% YoY decline and a 32.96% MoM decline. Due to this, total 3W sales (domestic + exports) took a hit and fell into the red completely. With 2,18,091 units, total domestic sales (2W + 3W) accounted for 79.27% market share and registered 29.10% YoY growth and 34.12% MoM growth.Total exports were just 57,024 units and there was nothing to write home about. Despite a drop in exports, TVS’ total sales when domestic and exports are combined, stood at a grand 2,75,115 units. Gains registered were decent at 3.12% YoY and 13.68% MoM. Volume gained YoY was 8,327 units and volume gained MoM was 33,103 units. More

Ather Electric Scooter Records 1 Lakh Production – Jan 2023 Sales At 12k

Rapid growth and success of Ather Scooters – Roll out of 1,00,000th scooter (True Red Ather 450X) at the factory in January 2023Ather Electric Scooter ProductionAther Scooters aims to create a more sustainable future through innovative and intelligent products. Since inception, Ather Energy has made significant progress in terms of production and innovation. And have now announced a production milestone – 1,00,000 units in January 2023. The rollout unit is a True Red Ather 450X, a new colour option that was showcased for the first time earlier in January 2023. And saw factory production floor personnel celebrate the occasion.A new year. A new beginning. And with it begins a new phase in Ather’s journey. Production timeline to a lakh units is as follows. It took Ather Energy 35 months to complete production of its first 10K units. The next 5 months helped it get to the 20k production mark. And another 5 months to get to the 30k unit mark.Thereafter there was the element of swiftness to keep up with demand. It took 3 months to manufacture the next 10k units to reach production of 40k units. Reaching 50k units took another 2 months, meaning that was the quickest 10k units production timeline. That was on August 30, 2022. Now less than 6 months later, Ather Energy has manufactured another 50k units. A journey that has been nothing short of remarkable.Ather Sales Jan 2023In Jan 2023, Ather electric scooter sales crossed the 12k mark. This was a 330% YoY growth and a 32% MoM growth. Production timeline of Ather Energy shows a steady increase in production starting from 35 months to produce its first 10,000 units. This corresponds with sales of a few 100s each month when Ather scooters were first launched. As demand increased, production processes were scaled up for efficient and faster production. This was evident in the quicker production timelines of 20K and 30K units, 5 months each.Ather Electric Scooter Sales Jan 2023By August 2022, it took only 2 months to produce 10K units and reach the 50K unit mark. Ather Energy was able to sustain momentum and manufacture another 50K units in under 6 months. This significant increase in production can be attributed to the company’s ability to quickly adapt and optimize its production processes to meet growing demand for its electric scooters. To keep up, Ather inaugurated its 2nd manufacturing plant in November 2022.December 2022 sales reached 9,187 units at YoY growth from 1,878 units, with MoM improvement of 27 percent. In comparison, by the end of Q1 ( Jan, Feb, March) 2022, sales were lesser at 7,458 units. Ather Energy became one of the top-selling EV manufacturers by 2022 end, with sales tripling to 59,123 units from 17,272 units in 2021. Sales progressively improved over the year, reaching 24,634 units in Q4 2022, 40,868 units in H2 2022. It’s easy to see why Ather Energy production has been considerably scaled up in recent months.Indian e-scooter industry growth trendAther has strong sales momentum. Alongwith brand growth. By 2022 end, the manufacturer was present in 70 cities with 89 Experience Centres. January 2023 is expected to be a bumper sales month. From February 1, 2023, Ather is introducing AutoHold in its Gen 3 scooters. This detects slopes and holds your scooter in place.Ather’s commitment to sustainability and innovation is built on intelligent charging infrastructure, connected scooters, and a seamless customer experience. These efforts have had a positive impact on company growth. As the electric two wheeler industry grows, the biggest challenges faced by the industry have evolved. While the initial hiccups involved waiting for demand to grow, today it’s all about meeting demand from a customer base that’s continually evolving. Looking forward, the company is poised for continued growth and success as it continues to strive for a more sustainable future. Ather’s sales growth not only strengthens the manufacturer’s industry position, but also that of the Indian electric scooter industry.Ather Energy – Growth impact and future productionThis will be possible once a third manufacturing plant is announced by the end of FY23. To meet growing demand, this plant will have an installed production capacity of 10 lakh units per annum. This takes Ather Energy’s total capacity to over 14 lakh units per year. Current capacity is 4.2 lakh units per annum in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, and it’s expected to be fully utilized by next fiscal end.Ather also plans to expand its sales network and enhance its product portfolio, including exports in the next 2-3 years. On ground growth will include 350 experience centres across 250 cities and towns by the end of next financial year. Ather Grid charging infrastructure will be expanded to 1,400 locations.Ravneet Singh Phokela, Chief Business Officer, Ather Energy “We had a great start to this year, registering our best-ever monthly sales by delivering 12,419 units to our customers. 2023 KTM 390 ADV Debuts – New Spoked Wheels, Colours

Except for the new Spoked Wheels edition and new colours, 2023 KTM 390 Adventure is identical to 2022 model2023 KTM 390 ADVKTM’s formula of an ADV based on its explosive 390 platform has worked wonders. It has been well-received as a high-speed tourer since day one. But as an ADV for trails and off-roading? Not so much. Apart from ergonomics, KTM didn’t offer enough off-road hardware to justify the ADV tag. 2023 KTM 390 Adventure aims to fix just that. The Austrian brand has revealed 2023 KTM 390 Adventure.Ahead of the launch of new-gen 390 platform, KTM is updating its 390 Adventure to meet buyer trends. It was a formidable machine where touring and mild trailing are concerned. That said, customers who craved more off-road worthy hardware can now rejoice with the 2023 KTM 390 Adventure.2023 KTM 390 Adventure RevealedKTM is offering the one element that was asked for the most. Wire-spoke rims. These rims fare better in off-road conditions as they have a better shock absorbing and dissipating capability as opposed to alloy wheels. Manufacturers offer wire-spoke rims on off-road motorcycles and retro motorcycles. These new wheels are offered in “Spoked Wheeled” edition alongside regular cast alloy models. In the press material, KTM didn’t mention if these new wheels are tubeless or not. Usually, tubeless spoke wheels are only offered with premium off-roaders. The pictures of wheels from KTM suggest these might very well be compatible with tubeless tyres. KTM is using the exact same Continental TKC70 tyres previously used with alloy wheels.2023 KTM 390 ADVThese have block patterns and fare better in providing traction in sticky situations. Wheels themselves are made out of black anodized aluminium. With this move, 2023 KTM 390 Adventure is more befitting of its name. Rest of the motorcycle is kept identical except for new colourways.Specs & FeaturesBoth Spoked Wheeled edition and regular alloy wheel edition are on offer. The 373 cc single-cylinder fire-breathing engine is retained with 44 hp and 37 Nm. This engine is mounted on a steel trellis frame suspended on 43 mm WP USD front forks and rear mono-shock. The 5” TFT display showing various functionalities is retained from the outgoing model.Traction Control, Ride-by-wire, OFFROAD mode (more rear wheel slip), Cornering ABS, and linked OFFROAD ABS (disengaged on the rear, reduced on the front), 46mm throttle body and the slipper clutch are still on offer. Braking consists of single disc setups at both ends clasped by BYBRE hardware with a 4-pot caliper at front. Weight is 172 kg including 14.5L of fuel.Pricing for the same is not yet announced. It is unsure when it will launch in India. We can expect a slight price bump for the Spoke Wheeled edition over the standard model. While the latter is likely to be priced as is. 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750 Trans-Am Racer Is Today's BaT Auction Pick

Car and Driver• This Alfa Romeo is one of Trans-Am racing’s greatest heroes.• Repainted in its original 1971 livery, this GTV won its final race, only to be disqualified later.• The Bring a Trailer auction ends on February 3.Great racing stories are built on rivalries: Ford versus Ferrari, Hunt versus Lauda, Smokey Yunick versus the NASCAR rulebook. Up for sale right now on Bring a Trailer—which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos—is one half of a duel that defined compact-car racing in the early 1970s. The 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750 battled against the Brock Racing Enterprises Datsun 510 to the bitter end, achieving a short-lived victory after a fuel capacity technicality reversed the Alfa’s fortune. The Sports Car Club of America’s 2.5 Challenge Series was exciting if you were a racer on a budget, unable to stretch to the likes of a V-8–powered Chevy Camaro, Ford Mustang, or AMC Javelin. The 2.5 Challenge cars were small and boxy–510s, Alfas, and BMWs–but the competition was just as fierce as in the ponycar field. If you liked small, lightweight road cars, the 2.5 Challenge was the place to be.Bring a TrailerBring a TrailerStaring down a factory-backed Alfa Romeo team, you might imagine Datsun as the scrappy underdog, but the BRE 510s had the development money behind them. With famed Nissan president Yutaka Katayama (a.k.a. Mr. K) cheering from the sidelines, and with Peter Brock’s team preparing the chassis and engines, the BRE 510s were difficult to beat. This Alfa Romeo GTV 1750 was the racing machine that Horst Kwech campaigned in the 1971 season. At the time, its 2.0-liter inline-four produced 205 horsepower. Series regulations meant the Alfa received a 200-pound penalty to bring it closer to the BRE 510, but Alfa’s team placed the ballast to achieve a nearly ideal 48/52 weight distribution.Bring a TrailerWearing 15-inch Minilite wheels wrapped in fat Hoosier tires, this classic little Alfa is immediately appealing. The cockpit is simple: three pedals, the necessary instrumentation, a five-speed manual transmission, and a well-worn leather-wrapped steering wheel. While it may be light on amenities, this car is full of stories. In 1971, Horst and his Alfa went back and forth with John Morton and his BRE 510, swapping wins like featherweight boxers exchange blows. The final race was held at Laguna Seca, with the national title on the line. The live-axle Alfa delivered a handful of oversteer followed by understeer, while the 510 was temperamental unless it was driven with reckless abandon. Despite rules trying to even the playing field, the vehicles couldn’t have driven more differently.Bring a TrailerBring a TrailerIn that final round, Horst’s Alfa emerged triumphant. However, suspicions were raised when the Datsun hit the pits while the Alfa stayed out. Scrutineers descended and found that the GTV’s fuel system held two gallons more than was legal, and the trophy was handed to the Datsun team. That season remains contentious with race fans even now, but more than that, it remains memorable. A car with this level of racing pedigree comes along very seldom. By itself, this Alfa is an interesting and valuable vintage racing machine. The story–and the rivalry–just add to the appeal. More
