Immaculate 9000-Mile 2001 BMW Z8 is Today’s BaT Auction Highlight

This V-8-powered roadster combines a BMW M5 powertrain with a retro design inspired by the BMW 507.Its silver paint and black interior make it a double for James Bond’s car in The World Is Not Enough. With only 9000 miles covered in 22 years, it’s looking like a good prospect, and the online auction ends on Tuesday, November 28.Remember James Bond’s BMW period? That’s likely to be the first association for many people spying this gleaming silver Z8—one that looks pretty much identical to the one that the Pierce Brosnan’s take on the world’s most famous non–secret agent drove in 1999’s The World Is Not Enough. Spoiler alert: It didn’t end well for the car.Our Bring a Trailer pick of the day is a very low-mileage example of the muscular BMW roadster. Even without the kudos of being a Bond car, there is a huge amount to like about the Z8, one of those cars for which critical appreciation has grown strongly over the years. When it was first shown at the 1997 Tokyo auto show as the Z07 concept, taking obvious inspiration from the 1956 BMW 507, many wondered why BMW was taking such a retro styling direction for a range flagship built around a high-tech aluminum space-frame structure. Bring a TrailerBut while the Z8 looked like it had traveled from the past, it brought performance from the future. The production car shared its powertrain with the E39-generation BMW M5, another of the era’s portfolio highlights, using the same S62 4.9-liter naturally aspirated V-8. This made peaks of 394 horsepower and 369 pound-feet and sent drive to the rear axle through a standard six-speed manual gearbox. The only automatic Z8 would be the later Alpina version. Bring a TrailerBeing 500 pounds lighter than the M5 made the Z8 seriously quick. We ran it through the zero-to-60-mph benchmark in just 4.5-seconds, making it one of the fastest cars we had tested at that point. It proved its superiority against even the most exotic competition by outperforming a Ferrari 360 spider on acceleration in a three-way comparison in 2001. (The Aston Martin DB7 Volante was very much there to make up the numbers.)Despite costing more than twice as much as the M5, with a $135,300 base price in 2000, the Z8 had no difficulty finding an enthusiastic audience in the United States. More than 2500 were sold here, close to half of the total production of 5700 cars. Its status as a bona fide modern classic would have been secured even without starring in one of the less well-known Bond films. Bring a TrailerOur pick has covered just 9000 miles from new and is being sold complete with the optional hard top. It still features the original audio system, with a six-CD multi-changer, plus a similar vintage BMW-branded flip phone that mounts in the center console. Minor issues noted by the seller include some small scuffs on the underside of the front bumper and sagging hardtop headlining. With seven days to run, the bidding is already past $100,000. Given the low mileage and apparent condition of this one we can expect it to run considerably higher. Senior European CorrespondentOur man on the other side of the pond, Mike Duff lives in Britain but reports from across Europe, sometimes beyond. He has previously held staff roles on U.K. titles including CAR, Autocar, and evo, but his own automotive tastes tend toward the Germanic: he owns both a troublesome 987-generation Porsche Cayman S and a Mercedes 190E 2.5-16. New Electric G-Class Can Do 360-degree Turns Standstill – CEO Shows

New Electric G-ClassAs opposed to the 4X4 setup with front, middle and rear locking diff of ICE G Wagon, new Electric G-Class will pack one motor for each wheelWe all know what a G-Class or a G Wagon looks like. This iconic SUV is going electric and the company is retaining its iconic appeal intact. In a recent video, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius demonstrated off-roading prowess of new electric G-Class. In his words, Electric G is more capable of regular ICE G. Which is interesting.New Electric G-Class shows off-roading prowessA lot of manufacturers tend to induce a certain futuristic design appeal with their electric vehicles. This futuristic design will create an impression of driving the future and it leans towards aerodynamic efficiency too, which is crucial for any EV. With new Electric G-Class, Mercedes is keeping the design intact. The round headlights with LED DRLs, iconic G-Class grill with large Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star logo, flared wheel arches, exposed rain gutters, side-mounted tailgate, spare wheel on tailgate, upright windscreen, externally hinged doors and all the charades that make a G-Class, are present on Electric G-Class.This way, there is no deviation from 40 years of design culmination and curation that has made a G-Class so iconic and recognisable. The same boxy design silhouette is present that commands a lot of respect in automotive industry. Looking at the way CEO Ola Kallenius kept on referring to prototype as Electric G, we would reckon this vehicle will not fall under EQ umbrella.[embedded content]Mercedes-Benz manufactures every single G-Class in Graz, Austria, where G-Class was born. Before launching any G-Class the company makes sure that it is Schockl-proof. Schockl is a mountain in Graz. Where a G-Class prototype takes a tough and challenging off-road course 336 times successfully.Standstill 360-degree turn like Yangwang U8With Electric G, Mercedes-Benz is implementing a different axle concept with four electric motors powering four wheels. This way, Mercedes can unlock torque vectoring with granular control of individual wheel to unlock special abilities that regular ICE G-Class could never dream of achieving. Most impressive of these abilities is 360-degree turns from a standstill on loose traction surfaces and even nudge the car into a 90-degree turn when terrain gets trickier. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius calls it a ‘G Turn’. We have seen BYD Yangwang U8 pull off similar feats. U8 could also float and traverse on water, though. Something that was not demonstrated on new Electric G-Class.New Electric G-Class iconic design retainedThe company highlighted Dynamic Seats feature on Electric G. This feature senses movement of occupant’s body and hugs them to counteract some of the motion that translates into the cabin on rough terrains. There was some light shed on new Electric G-Class’ ‘Underride Guard’ that is made of two layers of carbon fibre and a special compound sandwiched between.Exact powertrain details weren’t divulged. But we can expect a large battery that is easily 100+ kWh. To overcome aerodynamics of a brick-like vehicle. 450+ km range, 600+ bhp and close to 1000 Nm od combined torque are expected. Considering Mercedes-Benz didn’t show the interiors, there may be a different Electric G specific dashboard too. More details will follow. More

Spy shots reveal a stylish motorcycle that has all the elements of a neo-retro motorcycle to win you over. This Cafe Racer style gets a bikini fairing that could be termed as a headlight cowl. This fairing extends to the bottom of its fuel tank, lending a muscular appeal.Triumph Thruxton 400 bikini fairingAs seen in spy shots above, Triumph Thruxton 400 gets a round headlight. This is identical to Speed 400’s round LED headlight. The fairing is slightly sporty with aggressive cuts and creases in it. Triumph is offering clip-on handlebars on Thruxton 400.This ensures a sporty riding position and demands quite a lean from rider. Bar end mirrors look identical to Speed 400. Seat and subframe look identical too but tail section is different on Thruxton 400 test mules than what we saw with Speed 400. Other similarities include wheels and tyres along with fuel tank and powertrain.Triumph Thruxton 400 profileSpeaking of powertrain, upcoming Triumph Thruxton 400 will share its powertrain with Speed 400. This 398.15cc single-cylinder DOHC liquid-cooled 4V engine is capable of developing 39.5 bhp of peak power at 8,000 RPM and 37.5 Nm of torque at 6,500 RPM. Ride-by-wire throttle, slip and assist clutch, a 6-speed gearbox and other attributes will be on offer as well. This test mule looks close to prodution and the basic motorcycle is already developed.
