Is a Crash Ever an Accident?

When Helen Witty’s 16-year-old daughter was killed by a drunk and drugged driver, in her grief she found some comfort in a single word: crash. While most of those around her were referring to her daughter’s death as an accident, Witty says that one word—crash—helped her change her perception and heal.
The word was “empowering,” she says, after her daughter, Helen Marie, went Rollerblading in 2000 and never came home. “It was a bright, sunny afternoon. She went to the end of our driveway, blew me a kiss, and said, ‘I’ll be right back. I’ll stay on the sidewalk. I’ll cross at the crosswalks. I love you.’ And I never saw her again.”
A 17-year-old girl who had spent the afternoon drinking and smoking pot with friends got behind the wheel of her car, got on the phone, and lost control of her vehicle, striking and killing Helen Marie. The word “accident,” Witty says, implies there wasn’t a cause. “A drunk-driving death or injury is 100 percent preventable,” says Witty. “There was a cause. Somebody was at fault.” Witty, now the president of Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD), believes language matters. And “crash” is a word, she says, that ” that goes straight to your heart.”

NHTSA Says Young Men Driving Badly under Pandemic

2019 U.S. Traffic Deaths Down, 2020 Trending Up

Study Predicts Autonomous Cars Won’t Be Much Safer

MADD was the first organization to give a voice to the pain the word “accident” was causing, says Mark Rosekind, the former administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). “You’re doing a disservice to our lost family members by pretending somehow this was chance when, in fact, it was a drunk driver, or nowadays a distracted driver, or sleepy driver,” he says. By their very definition, accidents are not intentional, but choices are, and that is where the difference lies, safety advocates say.
“People are intentionally driving over the speed limit,” says Danny Harris, executive director of New York City-based Transportation Alternatives. “People are intentionally on their phone while they are on the highway. People are intentionally drinking or taking drugs, then deciding to operate a motor vehicle. These things are tragic, and they’re not accidents.”
The “accident” vernacular is rooted in our history and ingrained in our speech patterns. “It’s just so automatic, it’s like a verbal tic almost,” says Rosekind. “It’s just unconscious for so many people.” And that, advocates say, was purposeful.
Even 100 years later, safety advocates say the word “accident” remains a tool wielded to victim-blame, under the same umbrella as concepts like “The pedestrian wasn’t wearing light-colored clothing” or “The child ran away from a parent across an intersection.”
“And we start to add these other layers that make these things seem like they are just everyday parts of … life, as opposed to preventable tragedies, which we believe that they are,” says Harris. Transportation Alternatives is the parent of Families for Safe Streets, a national grassroots organization that has pushed terminology changes from New York City to San Francisco.
Rosekind says this simple word change, “can translate directly into action that could bring safer roads,” because causation can lead the car industry, engineers, policymakers, and advocates to research and work on why crashes happen; intervention, in turn, can lead to measures that can save lives and prevent injuries. “That’s a very different mindset and approach to safety,” says Rosekind.
While changing how we describe car-specific incidents that kill or injure was part of the mission MADD set in its founding 40 years ago, the federal government didn’t get behind the concept until 1994. Rosekind says it was Ricardo Martinez, the 10th administrator of NHTSA, who kicked off the campaign “A Crash Is Not an Accident.” Still, not all have followed its lead.
More than half of the state departments of transportation in the U.S. have not set policies to do away with “accident” in favor of “crash.” And so for many, the terminology remains not only imprinted in our brains but preprinted on our paperwork. After all, in thousands of jurisdictions across the country, first responders at the scene of a crash fill out forms titled “Accident Report.”

Aprilia SXR160 Scooter Launch Next Month – Exp Price Rs 1.25 Lakh

    Aprilia SXR160
Aprilia SXR160 will be the first proper maxi-scooter in India which will be followed by the Forza range from Honda next year

Piaggio-owned Aprilia will be launching its much anticipated SXR 160 maxi-style scooter next month. As per reports, the power scooter will hit showrooms somewhere around the first or second week of December and is expected to be pegged at Rs 1.25 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
Certain dealers have started accepting bookings for SXR160 at a token amount of Rs 5,000. The maxi-scooter was first showcased at the AutoExpo 2020 held earlier this year. This scooter is the effort of Piaggio to offer an accessible maxi-scooter which has been absent until now.
It will be by far the largest scooter both in terms of size and engine displacement to go on sale in India surpassing SXL 150 and VXL 150 from Aprilia’s sister brand Vespa. It will continue to hold this honour until Honda introduces the new Forza 350 in the country sometime next year.
    Mechanical Details
In terms of powertrain, it receives the same 160cc single-cylinder motor from SR 160 that pushes out 11 PS of power and 11.2 Nm of peak torque. This unit will be mated to a CVT gearbox.
    Aprilia SXR 160
Suspension duties will be handled by a telescopic fork and a mono-shock unit at rear. Unlike SR160 which rides on 14-inch wheels, this one rides on 12-inch alloy wheels while anchoring duties on both units are carried out by disc brake at both ends assisted by single-channel ABS.
    Design & Features
The low wheel size should also mean that underneath storage space will be sizeable. There’s additional storage in the form of an apron mounted compartment. In terms of features, it gets a fully digital instrument cluster, an optional smartphone connectivity tech, a USB charging port and more. The scooter features a sharp design language which consists of a LED headlight, LED DRLs, LED taillights, a tall windscreen, a stretched-out floorboard and a slightly stepped-up seat
The new Aprilia 160 will be offered in four colour options which includes blue, red, black and white. In all probability, it will be made available in one valiant only.
This will be the first maxi-scooter which will be offered in India. Upon its launch, it will not have any direct rivals in the market but will compete against the likes of Suzuki Burgman Street, TVS Ntorq and its Vespa cousins- SXL and VXL. Following this, Aprilia is also expected to launch SXR125 at a later stage.

Copying Royal Enfield Will Not Work For Rivals – RE Is 10 Steps Ahead Of Market

Siddhartha Lal with RE Meteor 350
Royal Enfield continues to enjoy a monopoly in the 200cc to 700cc motorcycle segment in India

Rivalry in the mid-segment retro classic motorcycles has heated up quite a few notches higher in recent years. The segment which only had Royal Enfield motorcycles on offer a few years ago, now has players like Bajaj, Jawa, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, etc. In spite of this, Royal Enfield has a market share of over 81% in the 200cc-700cc segment motorcycles in India.
In recent years we have seen more and more new motorcycles getting launched, with the aim of eating into the market share of Royal Enfield. Apart from launching motorcycles in a similar price and engine size segment as Royal Enfield, some rivals are even launching motorcycles which look similar to Royal Enfield.
Benelli launched Imperiale 400. Mahindra formed Classic Legends to revive Jawa brand. And one of the biggest blow / surprise came from Honda Motorcycle India; when they launched the H’Ness CB350 a month and a half back. Amidst this growing competition Eicher Motors MD, Siddhartha Lal has made a frontal attack.
In an interaction with Times of India, Siddhartha has stated that “imitation and trying to copy doesn’t work”, thus taking a shot at his company’s rivals. He further added that his firm is “ten steps ahead of the market”. Royal Enfield currently retails 350cc bikes such as Bullet, Classic and Meteor, 410cc Himalayan and 650cc twins Interceptor and Continental GT.
Foreign Brands setting up JVs in India
Rivalry is set to intensify in coming years with the joint venture between American bikemaker Harley Davidson and Indian manufacturer Hero MotoCorp. The latter will develop, manufacture and sell motorcycles under the former’s brand name in India which will specifically target the mid-segment displacement bikes.
Although, this is not the only joint venture that will come in future. It is already known that Bajaj had partnered with Triumph to develop bikes under the latter’s name in the country which will be more India-specific. Both locally produced Harley and Triumph motorcycles could generate great interest in the premium bike segment.
    Royal Enfield’s strong points
However, Siddhartha added that every time some other two-wheeler brand comes up with a new product in the mid-displacement segment, it has turned a habit for everyone to sound a death knell for Royal Enfield. Although he claims that the brand has the experience and expertise in sales, dealership walk-ins, after-sales and marketing which have kept the brand going strong.
In the last few years, Royal Enfield has shown a tremendous resurgence after many years of dull performance in the market which has seen a huge surge in sales thanks to its solid products on offer. The company is looking to further solidify its position in the automotive sector by launching as many as 28 new bikes in the next seven years.
It is definitely hard for any other manufacturer to displace Royal Enfield from its position in the premium motorcycle segment and the Chennai-based bikemaker in all likelihood will continue to dominate this segment. However, with strong products from rival brands at competitive prices would mean that RE will no more enjoy a clear monopoly.

KTM 250 ADV vs Himalayan vs G310GS vs 390 ADV – Comparison

    KTM 250 Adventure
With the launch of KTM 250 Adventure, a comparison with its nearest rivals- Himalayan, G 310 GS and 390 Adventure is in order

After a long and ardent wait, KTM finally launched its entry-level adventure motorcycle in India. The 250 Adventure had been in development for more than a year and had been spotted testing on Indian roads on multiple occasions. Priced at Rs 2.48 lakh (ex-showroom) it is offered as an affordable alternative to its competitors.
However, it is still not the most affordable in this range. While it comes out as an attractive option it does have its fair share of hits and misses. Let us find out how it stands up against its close rivals Royal Enfield Himalayan, BMW G 310 GS and its own elder sibling KTM 390 Adventure.

    Engine & Transmission
The 250 Adventure is by far the smallest in this range in terms of displacement although it is not the least in terms of output. Ironically, it is the largest displacement motor from Himalayan which produces the least output. This is because while all bikes are powered by single-cylinder units, the Himalayan gets a single overhead camshaft instead of double cams like the rest.
390 Adventure’s 373.2cc unit produces the highest output of 43.5 PS and 37 N of torque. All, barring Himalayan, come with a 6-speed transmission. The Royal Enfield is offered with a 5-speed unit. Also, Himalayan is the only bike to miss out on a slipper clutch with an assist. I guess we know why Himalayan is the most affordable in this space.

    Dimensions
The 250 Adventure is almost identical to its older sibling except its height. While the former stands at 1263mm, the latter stands at 1400mm. In other respects, all bikes measure almost similar. The Himalayan is the heaviest in this space at 199kg. It also gets the highest ground clearance of 220mm.
    Hardware
While none of these motorcycles can’t be defined as hardcore off-roaders meant for trail bashing, the Himalayan is definitely more suited to take on the rough paths. The KTM siblings and BMW G 310 GS are more tourers which can do occasional off-roading. Himalayan gets conventional telescopic front forks while the rest are equipped with upside-down forks. Rear suspension units of all bikes are equipped with a preload adjustable mono-shock.

However, Himalayan leads the pack when it comes to suspension travel with front travel of 200mm and rear travel of 180mm. This is what makes it a competent off-roader. Although all bikes come with switchable ABS at the rear. Disc brakes with dual-channel ABS are offered as standard on all four bikes. Another point of difference while all get tubeless tyres, Himalayan gets tubed tyres.
    Features and Price
KTM 390 Adventure continues to lead this space in terms of features quite appropriately since it is the most expensive too. It has a wide equipment which consists of a 5-inch TFT colour infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, Off-Road Mode, MTC (lean angle sensitive), bi-directional quick shifter, traction control and cornering ABS.

The latest iteration of G 310 GS, like 390 Adventure, also comes with multiple riding modes with ride-by-wire technology. All get digital instrument consoles except the Himalayan which gets a part analogue and part digital console. All bikes get a halogen headlight except the 390 Adventure which gets an LED headlamp.
Royal Enfield Himalayan is by far the most affordable of the lot. Quite expectedly, it comes with the least number of gizmos while KTM 390 Adventure justifies its high premium with features on offer. In fact, it also gets the most powerful engine of the lot. More

    Two wheeler sales recovery
A glimpse at the two-wheeler market, especially current motorcycle sales are in no way indicative of the stilled and gloomy start to FY21. So, it’s no surprise that must manufacturers would be chuffed to bits at the way business has picked it once retail activity started and logistics and supply systems were sorted.
Demand isn’t unprecedented but seeing it altogether has brought a glimmer of hope to an otherwise lacklustre year devoid of activity through a long stretch. In living memory, no-one recalls a totally industrywide shutdown. Because it’s never happened before. These have been trying times, and October 2020 sales brings cheer. More

Maserati’s Project Rekall Is a Trippy Nineties Throwback Concept

Remember the Maserati Shamal? We forgive you if you don’t. Based on the equally forgettable Biturbo, it was sold in extremely low numbers, and wasn’t really ever popular in America. Well, Maserati seems to care about it quite a lot, because it has just introduced a new concept based on the Shamal, with a sprinkle of modern tech and other funky mods.

Revealed this week on Maserati’s “Fuoriserie” Instagram account, the car, dubbed Project Rekall—first spotted by the Pistonheads website—is just a collection of sketches, rather than an actual car. It sports the same body lines and boxed fender flares as the original Shamal, but it subs out the exterior light clusters for more modern sets. There are also some cool throwing-star wheels, a vent on the front bumper, and a thin roof-mounted wing.
This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

    2022 Maserati Grecale

Maserati MC20 Is Elegant, Has Racing Aspirations

Like the outside, Project Rekall’s interior retains the Shamal’s same general cabin layout, modernized with an super-cool digital gauge cluster and some extremely comfy-looking bucket seats. Thankfully, it looks as if the car’s manual transmission has been retained. Whether Maserati’s concept artists want to keep the Shamal’s original twin-turbo 3.2-liter V-8 under the hood has yet to be seen.
A Maserati spokesperson confirmed to Road & Track that its Fuoriserie Instagram channel is intended to promote customization, showing “the infinite possibilities” with its lineup. While the designs shown on the account are “concepts that customers can bring to a real car through customization,” it’s not a place where Maserati showcases actual cars it intends to build.
