    Image – The Bengal Rider
TVS Apache has beaten Bajaj Pulsar the first time in many months

Motorcycles in 150cc-200cc segment have registered impressive YoY gains in November 2020, even though MoM sales growth has turned negative. A total of 1,56,866 units were sold in November, which is YoY gain of 35.24%.
Sales during the corresponding period last year stood at 1,15,993 units. MoM sales growth is down -22.85%, as compared to 2,03,326 units sold in October 2020. This is not unusual, as auto sales generally decline after the festive rush.
    Apache on top
TVS Apache leads the pack with 41,557 units sold in November. It has registered a substantial YoY gain of 40.07%, as compared to 29,668 units sold in November last year.
Apache is also among the few motorcycles in this space that have positive MoM growth. As compared to 40,943 units sold in October 2020, MoM sales are up by 1.50%. Apache’s market share in November was 26.49%.

Hyundai Kona Electric Rs 1.5 Lakh Discount Jan 2021 – Grand i10 NIOS, Santro, Elantra

Hyundai Kona Electric MY2020 Gets Rs 1.5 Lakh Discount
Hyundai currently offers as many as eleven products in the Indian market including Venue, Creta, Grand i10 Nios, i20 and Verna

Hyundai Motors India Ltd. (HMIL) is offering heavy discounts at the start of a new year. Under the company’s New Year offers, several of its models are being offered with attractive benefits. This even includes its electric crossover Kona Electric.
This is the first time that the South Korean automaker is offering its EV with a sizeable benefit ever since it was launched in India back in 2019. Hyundai is offering a cash discount of a whopping Rs 1.5 lakh. The EV is currently retailed at a starting price of Rs 23.75 lakh and goes up to Rs 23.94 lakh (both prices ex-showroom).
It is to be noted that the discount is only valid on 2020 model year and not on the 2021 model year. White colour Kona EV 2020 MY is offered with Rs 50k discount, while any other colour comes with a flat Rs 1.5 lakh cash discount.
Benefits on Santro, Grand i10 Nios
Hyundai’s entry-level model Santro is also being offered with attractive benefits. It is being offered with an exchange bonus of Rs 15,000 across its range. While the base model is being offered with a cash discount of Rs 10,000, higher Magna, Sports and Asta trims are being offered with a discount of Rs 20,000. Similarly, Grand i10 Nios is offered with an exchange bonus of Rs 10,000 across its range except for diesel-powered variants.
Hyundai India Discounts – Jan 2021
The 1.2-litre petrol and CNG variants of Grand i10 are offered with a cash discount of Rs 5000 whereas the turbo petrol variant is being offered with a healthy discount of Rs 25,000. Its sedan sibling Aura is offered with an exchange bonus of Rs 15,000 across the range.
Its naturally aspirated petrol and diesel-powered variants are offered with an additional cash discount of Rs 10,000 whereas the turbo petrol-powered variant is offered with a cash discount of Rs 30,000.
    Recent Price Hike
The manufacturer, however, is not offering any sort of benefits for models such as the new generation i20, Venue, Verna, Creta and Tucson. The company recently hiked prices for all its offerings in India. The price hike ranged from Rs. 7,521 to Rs. 32,880 and took effect from the first day of 2021.
    Upcoming Models
Among new launches, the latest addition to Hyundai’s lineup was the third generation i20 which was launched in November 2020. The premium hatchback competes with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz, Honda Jazz and Volkswagen Polo. The brand has also lined up a few more launches in the coming future which includes a seven-seater version of Creta and a Tata HBX rivalling subcompact UV codenamed AX1. More

2021 Royal Enfield Classic 650 cc Twin Spied With New Gen 350 – Gets Alloys

    Royal Enfield Classic 650cc Twin
The Royal Enfield Classic has an unassailable lead in the Indian medium displacement motorcycle segment and why not augment it with a 650 cc variant?

If you are a Royal Enfield fan, there is a lot to be cheerful about in 2021 as the retro classic brand is gearing up for a new product launches in regular intervals. Royal Enfield has plans to launch one new motorcycle every 4 months in India.
While things are going to start with model year refreshes and minor updates, quite a few next-generation thumpers are in the pipeline for later this year. We all know the new 650 cc cruiser is on its way but RE has surprised by testing another twin-cylinder prototype that we believe to be the Classic 650!
2021 Royal Enfield Classic 650 spied
A recent spyshot of accessorized 650 cruiser was actually wrongly identified. The prototype featured a conventional roadster riding posture compared to the previously spied cruiser test mule‘s feet-forward stance. Not just that, the accessorized test mule also featured considerably higher seat height.
We have come across a new spy shot of the mystery Royal Enfield 650 roadster in question, parked alongside a new gen Classic 350 prototype. The image is credit to automotive enthusiast Ganesan.
Royal Enfield Classic 650cc Twin with new gen Classic 350. Footpegs positioning on both motorcycles is similar. Pillion seat is larger as compared to the 650cc cruiser spied earlier.
As you can see, they both share quite a lot in common in terms of basic design elements – circular headlamps, almond shaped fuel tank, split seats and roughly same seat height – and ergonomics. The motorcycle features black alloy wheels, front and rear discs, twin exhaust pipes, and an eccentrically mounted circular instrument dial.
Royal Enfield KX650 Cruiser with footpegs in the front, lower seat height and smaller pillion seat
Though the engine of the 650cc Classic is seen in black, it is likely that it is just a cover. As the spy shot shows that the cover is broken at one point, and one can clearly see the chrome / silver engine underneath.
Why Classic 650 when you already have Interceptor 650?
The Royal Enfield Classic 650 would be an ideal spiritual successor to the now defunct 500 cc variant which had a sizeable fan following. More powerful and refined twin-cylinder engine, the trademark retro design and a nameplate with huge brand recall make for a compelling combo.
Royal Enfield KX650 Cruiser with footpegs in the front, lower seat height and smaller pillion seat
To give you a perspective, more than half of RE’s sales volume is accounted for by the Classic 350; which is at the end of its life cycle and this shows how strong the Classic brand is. So, why not augment it with a 650 variant?
While the Interceptor 650 already covers the medium displacement roadster niche for RE, the company appears to be confident that there is sufficient difference in the appeal of the Classic 650 to have it alongside. The inverted telescopic fork, split seats with removable pillion unit and an old-school body-coloured headlamp housing distance the Royal Enfield Classic 650 from its sibling.
    Powertrain
In its existing state of tune, the motor produces 47 hp and 52 Nm of torque and is mated to a 6-speed transmission. We may see a minor tweak to the gear ratios to suite the Royal Enfield Classic 650’s relaxed mile-munching nature. With more variants being spun off the same platform, RE would be able to leverage the economies of scale to come up with very competitive pricing for its upcoming products. More

IIHS: Rear Automated Emergency Braking Is Standout Safety Feature

Letting the car decide when you should brake makes a difference, it turns out.
Based on insurance claims for some GM and Subaru vehicles, IIHS said rear AEB can reduce damage liability claims by 28 percent, while a backup camera or those beeping sensors reduce that by just 5 percent.
Since rear AEB is not widespread, IIHS said it is not going to use it as a requirement for its Top Safety Pick designations anytime soon.
Backing up a car is often a safe process, but it could certainly be safer. And it is, when a vehicle is equipped with rear automated emergency braking (AEB) technology. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released results of a new study that found rear AEB helps reduce the number of insurance claims more than any other safety technology the group has studied.

20 Automakers Agree to Make AEB Standard by 2022

We Crash Cars Repeatedly to Test Automatic Braking

Rear AEB uses the same ultrasonic sensors that in many vehicles beep at the driver if there’s something in the way of the moving car, but the “A” means the vehicle will automatically stop if it determines it’s about to hit an object. That small but important change drops the number of property damage liability claims by 28 percent and the number of collusion claims by 10 percent, IIHS found. Compared to other backup safety technologies that help prevent incidents, none are as effective as rear AEB. Rear cameras and parking sensors, for example, each reduced property damage liability claims by 5 percent and had minimal impact on collusion claims.

    IIHS

“When you compare vehicles with [rear AEB] and vehicles without, we’re seeing significant reductions in the frequency of insurance claims, bigger than the reductions we’re seeing for other technologies,” Joe Young, IIHS director of media relations, told Car and Driver.

    Subaru reverse automatic braking.
    Subaru

IIHS first calculated data for insurance claims for vehicles with rear AEB technology in 2017, using numbers from 2015 model General Motors vehicles (and some some from 2013 and 2014), including the Cadillac ATS, CTS, SRX, XTS, and Escalade. The new study adds in details for model year 2015–2018 Subarus, including the Legacy, Outback, Forester, Impreza, and Crosstrek. These two automakers were chosen because they were able to provide IIHS with the feature-level data required to analyze the numbers.
Despite the dramatic impacts rear AEB has on insurance claims, the technology is available on only around 30 percent of 2020 models, either as standard or optional equipment, Young said. IIHS is not pushing for any regulatory changes around rear AEB at the moment and has no plans to incorporate it into the group’s Top Safety Pick assessments in the near future. IIHS does use front crash prevention performance in deciding which vehicles are named Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ recipients. It’s also keeping a list of automakers that have fulfilled earlier pledges by adopting front or rear AEB.
“We hope that automakers see the clear benefit to their customers and add the technology to more vehicles,” he said. “While we do carry some ratings for rear AEB systems, given that the technology isn’t as widespread, it’s not a major focus of our testing at the moment . . . It’s our hope that more automakers will add the technology since the potential is clearly quite large.”
While precise figures are not public, Young said it’s unlikely that adding rear AEB is a big expense for automakers since the cost of adding rear AEB is often bundled with other technologies and relies on the ultrasonic parking sensors that are already standard or optional on many new vehicles.

Ather Mumbai Experience Center Opens – First 450x Series1 Electric Scooter Delivered

Prathamesh Sawant – one of the first owners of 450x Series 1 in Mumbai. Image – @the_hairmonster
Ather currently has the 450x and the 450 Plus electric scooters on offer

Ather Energy has opened their first experience centre in Mumbai today. Located at the popular Linking Road in Bandra, this state of the art showroom is called Ather Space. After Bangalore and Chennai, Mumbai is the 3rd city to get Ather Space.
In the coming months, more cities in India will be getting their own Ather Space. Hyderabad and Ahmedabad Ather experience centres will soon open for public. Ahmedabad recently got one of its first Ather Grid electric charging station.
    Increasing Production
Backed by Tiger Global, Hero MotoCorp and founders of Flipkart Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, Ather Energy was founded in 2013 and since then has raised $102.2 million. It has now been announced that Ather looks to intensify its production capacity.
Ather Energy has shifted its production base to Hosur in Tamil Nadu from its current manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Recently, the last unit of Ather 450 rolled out of this facility.
    Ather Space in Mumbai
By setting up this new manufacturing facility Ather will be ramping up its production which will help to manufacture 3,000 units in its initial stages and further expand to 8,000 units by the first half of this year. Ather has announced to expand its footprint beyond the 11 cities targeted for the first phase in November 2020. By March 2021, the company aims to have presence in 16 more cities – so total 27 cities will have Ather on offer by March 2021.
    Current Availability
11 cities of 1st phase are Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Coimbatore, Chennai and Kozhikode. Previously Ather has managed to produce only 300 units of 450 per month on average.
This modest number was mainly due to the restricted availability of the e-scooter in just 2 cities – Bengaluru and Chennai. Other factors such as lack of widespread charging infrastructure and premium pricing also led to slow sales volume.
    Ather Space in Mumbai
Ather Energy entered the Indian market with the launch of the country’s first intelligent electric scooter in the form of Ather 450 in 2018. This was followed by the launch of 450X and 450 Plus, more powerful and premium version of the standard 450 in January last year.
Ather Experience Center in Mumbai – Ather Space
They also launched a limited-run Series-1 Collector’s Edition of the 450X exclusively available for those who had booked it even before the brand had officially launched it. It is this special e-scooter, that is now being delivered in Mumbai via the new Ather Space Experience Centers.
    Powertrain & Performance
Ather 450X draws its power from a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) which is backed by a 2.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This powertrain is good enough to produce an output of 6kW (8 bhp) of power and 26 Nm of peak torque.
Ather Experience Center in Mumbai – Ather Space
It has a strong performance which can make it sprint from 0-40 kmph in just 3.3 seconds thus making it one of the quickest scooters in comparison to the 125cc segment of scooters. It is offered with three ride modes- Eco, Ride and Sport along with an additional high-performance ‘Warp’ mode. More

A Brand-New, Street-Legal 1980 Ford Escort Rally Car Could Be Yours

A motorsports company in the U.K. is building new versions of the Mk 2 Ford Escort from the 1970s.
Successful as a rally car for decades, the European second-generation Escort generation was the last to feature a rear-wheel-drive layout.
Motorsports Tools’ newly built RWD Escorts start at around $90,000.
Although the Ford Escort rarely features high on the list of the Blue Oval’s most memorable models in the U.S., the Escort name was attached to some considerably more exciting cars in Europe. That list includes both the famous RS Cosworth variant from the 1990s and its double-decker rear spoiler, but also the spectacular rally cars of the earlier rear-wheel-drive Mk 1 and Mk 2 generations.

A Visual History of Every Ford RS Model

Check Out this Ford Escort RS Cosworth on eBay

Ken Block’s New Car Is World’s Coolest ’78 Escort

These RS Escorts were hugely successful racing cars back in the day, with Ari Vatanen driving a Mk 2 RS1800 to the World Rally Championship in 1981. Thanks to progressive upgrades to engines, transmission and suspensions, they have stayed at the sharp end of European rallying ever since, especially in the U.K. and Ireland, remaining competitive even against more advanced all-wheel-drive rivals. Check out the late Colin McRae’s savagely fast Mk 2 or Northern Irishman Frank Kelly’s spectacular ‘Baby Blue’ to see just how exciting these evolved Escorts can be.
The huge popularity of the Escort has created a thriving market in both upgrades and parts, with U.K. motorsport specialist Motorsport Tools now having taken the next step to move to create brand-new cars. You’re looking at images of the first rear-wheel-drive Escort to be registered in the U.K. since 1980, with the company planning to produce around 10 finished cars per year. Prices starting at £65,000—nearly $90,000 at current exchange rates.

    Motorsport Tools

One thing you won’t see is a Ford badge, as MST has not been given official sanction to bring the Escort out of retirement.
“Our main business is rally car parts and all the parts are available to build these cars,” Motorsport Tools managing director Carwyn Ellis told Car and Driver from his company’s HQ in Wales, “all we’ve done is taken them and put them together. We can’t sell it as a Ford of course, especially as these cars are now very different to the original cars from the 1970s. But I know Ford is very proud of what the car has achieved and continues to achieve.”
While most interest has been from those planning to take their new Escorts rallying, Ellis confirms that some will be built as highly tuned road cars. “A lot of our customers aren’t intending to go rallying with them,” he said, ”they want a toy that looks like a rally car and performs like a rally car—the performance that they can use on road or on a race track. There are lots of people out there who are realizing that supercars are getting too fast to drive hard on the road—something like this, you still can.”

    Motorsport Tools

The first Motorsport Tools demonstrator has been built to a relatively tame road-biased specification, using a naturally aspirated Ford Duratec four-cylinder engine with its capacity increased to 2.5 liters and separate throttle bodies. That means it makes around 200 horsepower, enough to be exciting in a car weighing less than 2200 pounds with no driver aids. It has a six-speed manual gearbox driving its live rear axle with Bilstein shocks, AP racing brakes and gold Minilite wheels within extended wheel arches. Buyers will be able to opt for much more power with more aggressive engines—U.K. supplier Millington produces Escort engines making up to 370 hp—as well as sequential transmissions and other pricey upgrades. Tick every box and the finished car will be substantially more than $140,000.
“We will work with individual customers, they will all be unique,” Ellis says, “it depends on what people are looking for, whether they need to follow the restrictions for certain championships and how fast they want to go.” He also confirmed there will also be a similar “continuation” version of the earlier Mk 1 Escort which was produced between 1968 and 1974 and which will have more appeal to those who compete under historic rallying regulations.
“Interest has been a bit overwhelming, to be honest,” Ellis admits, who says there has even been interest from potential buyers in the U.S. Production will be limited to no more than ten cars a year, and Ellis has no doubt he will be able to find willing buyers for all of them.

New Electric Rickshaw With Headrest For Driver And Passengers – Spied In Chennai

    Image – Agastine
A lot of non-OEM entities are interested in participating in e-mobility and this new electric rickshaw could be such an example

The electric mobility is steadily taking shape in India, starting with urban scooters and auto rickshaws. Mahindra’s Treo electric rickshaw demonstrated the high potential of electric 3-wheelers in the country by becoming the first such product to cross 5,000-unit sales mark in a short period of time. It is only natural that other OEMs scrambling to get their own zero emission passenger three-wheeler ready for the market.
Mysterious new electric rickshaw spotted testing in Chennai
Automotive enthusiast from Chennai, Agastine has spotted this heavily disguised three wheeler prototype testing on Old Mahabalipuram Road. He reports that it was an electric vehicle and it reached speeds of up to 75 kmph. He also added that the vehicle displayed impressive acceleration characteristics.
While our first guess was Mahindra since the automaker has its R&D HQ in the city, a quick look into our archives of spy shots revealed that the OEM’s prototypes usually carry TN-19 temporary license plates. Moreover, Mahindra’s electric prototypes are based out of its Bangalore division which specializes in e-mobility.
So, which brand does this electric auto rickshaw prototype belong to? As of now, our guess is as good as yours. The birth of electric mobility has made it easier for cash rich non-OEM entities to diversify into vehicle manufacturing with early mover’s advantage.
    New Electric Rickshaw
This prototype could very well belong to a new brand which has its roots either in auto component manufacturing or in a sector that has an indirect link to the automotive industry.
Recently, Ola Electric division has been in the news for announcing plans to invest Rs 2,500 crore in Tamil Nadu, for setting up world’s largest electric scooter manufacturing plant. In a related news, patent images of an Ola electric rickshaw was also leaked a few days ago.
    Salient features
Looking at the spyshot, the first thing that catches our attention is the head rests for driver and three passengers. The headrests, the LED taillights and the fact that the vehicle is capable of doing high speeds indicate that this auto rickshaw is aiming to be positioned at the higher end of the price sensitive segment.
    New Electric Rickshaw
For reference, the Mahindra Treo is powered by an 8 kW electric motor which is capable of propelling it to a top-speed of 55 kmph. We estimate the mysterious electric rickshaw prototype to be at least twice as powerful, based on the observer’s report.
The vehicle appears to be taller than an average passenger 3-wheeler and is equipped with a sturdy protection bar at the rear, possibly to prevent any serious damage to the powertrain. If you happen to know any information about this electric auto rickshaw, please get in touch with us. More
