    Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) has launched a special variant of its power scooter Grazia 125. Dubbed Grazia Sports Edition, this scooter comes at a price tag of Rs 83,140 (ex-Delhi) which makes it Rs 1000 costlier than the disc brake variant of the regular model. It is now the most expensive scooter on offer from Honda India.
    Cosmetic Update
    For the additional premium, the Sports Edition model gets new paint schemes with body graphics that make the scooter look sportier. It gets two new colour options namely Sports Red and Pearl Nightstar Black. The Sports Edition model also receives red-black coloured rear suspension along with racing stripes.
    Other changes on this special edition model include a new rear grab rail, a new logo and a combination colour front-arc. Apart from these cosmetic changes, Sports Edition variant is identical to the standard scooter.
    Speaking on the occasion of the launch of Grazia Sports Edition, Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Director – Sales and Marketing, HMSI, said that with gradual reopening of educational institutes, Grazia Sports Edition could be the new choice for many looking for new personal mobility on two wheels.

    Mechanical Specs
    Mechanically, it is powered by the same 124cc single-cylinder, air-cooled motor which propels the regular Grazia. This unit is good enough to produce 8.14bhp at 6,000rpm and 10.3 Nm of peak torque at 5,000rpm and is mated to a CVT gearbox.
    Even the hardware setup is identical to the standard Grazia which gets conventional telescopic forks at front and a spring-loaded hydraulic setup at rear. It rides on 12 and 10-inch alloy wheels at front and rear respectively with a disc brake at front and a drum brake at rear.
    Features
    In terms of features, it is offered with a fully digital instrument console, black alloy wheels, LED headlamp, multi-function ignition switch, integrated pass switch and external fuel lid. Take a look at the new official TVC video below.

    The instrument cluster displays information such as speed, odometer, trip meter, distance-to-empty, real-time fuel efficiency and more.     Jawa Motorcycles Alloy Wheels Option Launch Soon – Spied On Test

    Classic Legends currently manufactures and retails three Jawa motorcycles in India- Jawa, Forty Two and Perak

    Classic Legends has been testing its retro-styled classic motorcycle Jawa Forty Two with a pair of new alloy wheels. Currently, the bike is offered with wire-spoked wheels which are enveloped by tube tyres. The new setup might make use of tubeless tyres that are easier to repair in case of a puncture.

    It might also offer a better grip and riding experience on the road. There are no apparent changes made to the motorcycle except for the addition of a single-piece grab rail and a short flyscreen although it is yet to be seen whether these are offered as standard or as optional add-on accessories.
    Also, the manufacturer seems to have done away with some chrome elements that have been replaced by blacked-out components such as its front and rear suspension setup, exhaust pipe and black headlamp bezel as well as indicator housings.
    Stitching on the seat also seems to be different. One might expect Jawa to also improve its seat quality since many consumers have complained about Forty Two’s seat size and quality especially for the pillion.

    Powertrain Specs
    If one takes a closer peek, they can spot a little reservoir where its rear suspension is mounted onto the bike’s frame. Apart from these, there are no other noticeable changes made on Forty Two. In all probability, it is also likely to retain the same powertrain. In its BS6 avatar, it is powered by a 293cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine that churns out 27 bhp and 27.05 Nm of peak torque. It is paired with a six-speed gearbox. It retailed in two variants- single-channel ABS and dual-channel ABS.
    The test mule seen on the latest set of spy shots is most probably the dual-channel ABS derivative. It is currently offered at a price bracket of Rs 1.65 lakh to Rs 1.74 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom).
    While details on the updated classic roadster are still very thin, we can expect this tyre setup to also find its way to other Jawa offerings such as Jawa Classic and Perak. Expect this new update Forty Two to make its debut in a few weeks time.
    Jawa Forty Two Rivals
    Competition in the retro motorcycle has been intensified ever since the launch of Honda H’Ness CB350 and Royal Enfield Meteor 350 late last year. While the former is a naked commuter roadster, the latter is sort of a cruiser.
    Both motorcycles are powered by 350cc single-cylinder motors and are paired to a five-speed gearbox. While CB350 kicks out 21 bhp and 30 Nm of peak torque, the engine on Meteor 350 produces 20.2 bhp and 27 Nm of peak torque.

    File this one under “common sense that has now been confirmed,” but if you’ve been curious whether or not opening the windows in a moving car will help reduce the chance of catching COVID-19, rest assured.
    A new study in Science Advances proves that opening up all of the windows is the best strategy, but even opening one does help.
    If you can’t open all four windows, open two on opposite sides to create an “air curtain” that keeps moving air between the passengers, minimizing the potential for the virus to move from driver to passenger.
    Cranking up the tunes and blasting them through open windows isn’t a common move during the winter, but this year, that might be just the thing to ask your Lyft driver to do. While the music is optional—may we recommend Pearl Jam’s “Alive”?—there are good medical reasons to make the ask. Given the chance of catching COVID-19, it’s valuable to now have proof that increased airflow means decreased chance of catching the virus while riding in a car.

    A new study by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Brown University, published this month in Science Advances, looked at “complex airflow patterns that exist inside the passenger cabin of an automobile” and how these patterns affect possible virus transmission between a driver and a passenger. The authors note that a viral load can build up inside the microclimate of a vehicle even on drives as short as 15 minutes, and the virus can remain viable in the air for up to three hours.
    The study authors looked at just one basic interior configuration: one driver in a left-hand-drive vehicle and one passenger sitting in the back right of a five-seat, four-door passenger car. They used a theoretical Toyota Prius moving at 50 mph as the model for the vehicle’s exterior geometry. Under these settings, the authors then simulated the in-vehicle airflow under six different window configurations.
    All the Windows Down: Safest
    The safest option—here defined as the situation with the highest amount of air changes per hour (ACH) and thus the most airflow to get potential viruses out of the car—is with all of the windows down. Shocker, we know, but the science says that having all of the windows down “establishes two distinct airflow paths within the car cabin, which help to isolate the left and right sides, and maximizes the ACH in the passenger cabin.” This results in an estimated 0.2 to 2 percent of the aerosols exhaled by a driver reaching the passenger. With all of the windows up, this number was around 8 to 10 percent. The second-best configuration is to have three windows down. The fourth window to leave up is the rear passenger window (next to where the passenger is sitting).
    Two Windows (Not Next to People) Is Second-Safest
    The one surprising finding is that opening the two windows closest to the two people is not that much better for ACH than having all the windows down. Having just these two windows open “does not effectively dilute the tracer particles and . . . the passenger receives a fairly large contaminant load from the driver,” the study says. It’s safer, it turns out, to keep the opposing (that is, the front passenger and rear driver’s side) windows open to create a sort of “air curtain” between the vehicle’s two occupants. Wearing masks or installing physical barriers in the car, the authors say, can be effective steps as well.
    Looking forward, the authors plan on studying just how vehicle speed affects in-vehicle airflow and how much rolling the windows down part of the way helps, or hurts, the chance of infection. Perhaps we’ll hear the results by summertime.

    Sondors Electric Motorcycle Called Metacycle Debuts – 130 Kms Range

    Sondors, an e-bike maker with several bikes and mopeds in its company lineup, has added a new electric motorcycle called Metacycle. Priced at $5,000 (Rs.3.66 lakhs), this highly affordable electric motorcycle offers an 80 miles (130 kms) range.
    Sondors Electric Motorcycle is equipped with a 4000 watt hour 72 volt battery. The battery can be charged via a 110 volt wall outlet in a matter of 4 hours with the motor capable of 20 hp and 8 kW thrust with a top speed of 80 mph.
    Design and Features
    The new electric Metaycle from Sondors is designed for urban use and to take on congested city streets and highways. It weighs 91 kgs and is constructed out of lightweight aluminum with a cast eco-frame with sleek, narrow profile. Its features include LED lighting for head and tail lamps and swappable batteries.
    The electric bike also gets turn signals in the front incorporated into the sides of the halo headlamp. A single seat, wide set handlebars, rear view mirrors and large tyres are also a part of the features seen on the new Metacycle.
    Sondors Electric Motorcycle
    Another striking feature is a built in wireless charger for a smartphone located under a translucent panel where the fuel tank of a regular bike is generally positioned. It also gets a large display integrated into the frame making it easy for the rider to access information such as speed or battery level.
    Braking and suspension is via inverted fork suspension in the front and hydraulic brakes from Brembo subsidiary Bybre. It comes in at a relatively much cheaper price tag of $5,000. Expect deliveries to commence from October 2021.
    E-scooter Brands in India
    There is no indication of the Sondors Metacycle ever coming to India where there are eScooter brands such as Okinawa, Hero Electric, Ather and Ampere gaining ground in this segment. A surge in initiatives into the EV arena being introduced by the Government of India has also seen increased sales while improvement in charging infrastructure and benefits to automakers will surely take this segment to greater heights.
    The notion however of cheaper electric vehicles could be a flawed one. This expectation in large way thwarts the research and development process, and market maturity should be a longterm focus. The choice of electric vehicles should be one made to compact dependency on fuel, and the dream of a cleaner environment. But a lot of this is sidetracked in favour of an inherent expectation of an electric vehicle that’s cheaper. More

    A special bike ambulance has been developed by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to attend to urgent evacuation needs of security personnel in the event of a medical emergency or battle injury.
    This new bike ambulance, is based on the Royal Enfield Classic 350 motorcycles. It is called ‘Rakshita’ and have been successfully launched in Delhi today, on Monday 18th January 2021.
    Royal Enfield Modified As Rakshita Ambulance
    These modified Royal Enfield motorcycles consist of a single seat for the rider and a reclining seat with straps at the rear for the patient. The patient can be either in a sitting or sleeping position depending on the injury. It also includes a stretcher with wheels and emergency medical facilities such as neck brace and an oxygen cylinder.
    Ambulance siren is also a part of its features along with three beacons, two of which are fitted in the front and one at the rear with a GPS enabled tablet. The bike ambulance can tackle the most challenging of road conditions and get the injured to the nearest hospital or to be airlifted by a helicopter for emergency treatment.

    Rakshita ambulances are particularly useful in Naxalite and Maoist affected areas where the roads are so narrow that no regular ambulance can be accommodated. Security personnel in these areas are in constant danger of encounters, attacks and injuries and deaths are commonplace
    Particularly in the regions of Bijapur, Sukma, Dantewada etc. It was found that due to these constraints of narrow roads, medical assistance was delayed thus making the situation even more critical.

    Earlier in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic first struck, Hero MotoCorp also donated 60 mobile ambulances to the Government of India to reach out to patients in rural and remote areas so as to get them to the nearest hospitals on time.

    These were custom built motorcycles with engine capacity of 150cc and above. Hero MotoCorp fitted these bike ambulances with sleeping arrangements for the patient and essential medical equipment such as first aid kit, oxygen cylinder, fire extinguisher and siren.
    Nationwide, the importance of motorcycles extends well beyond just being daily commuter vehicles. Companies have in recent times as part of their CSR activity offered bikes for patrolling purposes in feasible areas.

    Suzuki Burgman Electric Scooter Spied Up Close – Chetak, Ather Rival

    With a rise in electric mobility solutions, many manufacturers are looking to introduce electric offerings in the near future especially in the two-wheeler segment. Plus with stricter emission norms in place, electric powertrains make good sense to bring down harmful pollutants in the air.
    Over recent past, many new electric scooters have been launched or revealed in India and many other manufacturers are planning to introduce such models in coming future. One of them is Suzuki which is planning to bring an electrified version of its power scooter Burgman.
    Latest Spy Shots
    Two prototypes of the electric scooter were recently spotted testing again in Delhi-NCR. Like in previous instances, the biggest highlight from the images is the absence of an exhaust canister which is clearly visible.
    The electric scooter is very similar to Burgman Street in terms of its design. Both test mules sported the same white and blue dual-tone paint scheme as in previous sightings.
    Suzuki Burgman Electric
    Suzuki had first revealed its intentions of developing an electric scooter for the Indian market back in 2018. However, at the time it wasn’t known that the Japanese manufacturer will be branding it as Burgman. Although tagging it as Burgman does seem a sensible decision since Suzuki’s first electric scooter will be expensive and it needs a strong donor with attractive styling and features to justify its price.
    Design & Features
    Speaking of its styling, it carries forward the maxi-style design of its petrol counterpart. It sports a white-blue paint scheme with blue highlights on the lower parts of the side panel and near handlebars.
    It also features dual shock absorbers now in order to handle the extra weight from the lithium-ion battery packs. Although it does feature standard telescopic forks at front and alloy wheels which are carried from the regular model.
    Suzuki Burgman Electric
    Apart from this, Suzuki is also set to offer all features which come on Burgman Street as standard on the electric scooter. These include an LED headlamp, LED taillights, a fully digital instrument cluster with Bluetooth as well as smartphone connectivity. A couple of months ago, Suzuki released the latest version of Suzuki Connect which now offers features such as Whatsapp alerts, SMS and CALL alerts, turn-by-turn navigation, charging status, riding status, etc.
    Expected Specifications
    Details of its powertrain are yet to be disclosed although one could expect Suzuki to offer a battery pack of 3-4 kWh and paired to a motor generating 5-6 kW of power. Its single-charge range would be around 80-90 km while it can attain a clock speed of around 80 kmph. It is expected to be offered at a price of over 1 lakh (ex-showroom). Upon its launch, it will compete against the likes of TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and Ather 450X.

    Battery Health Reports Coming for That Used Electric Car You're Considering

    It’s still in the early stages, but Recurrent has a plan to provide used-car shoppers with independent, detailed information on the battery pack for the EV they have their eye on.
    Recurrent is based in Seattle and currently limits EVs in its program to Washington State, but if the technology proves worthwhile, look for this “Carfax for batteries” when you’re shopping in a few years.
    Recurrent raised $3.5 million in funding in December and is now opening up its user rolls to more Washington-based drivers.
    Residual values for many electric vehicles drop at an alarming rate compared to those of traditional internal-combustion vehicles. There are a number of reasons for this, including lower overall supply, fewer people looking to buy an EV instead of ICE models, and a fair amount of uncertainty about just how long the battery will last.

    For the EV hesitant, there’s reason to look into Recurrent, the Seattle-based company that offers its own independent battery life reports for used EVs that provide detailed information on the EV a customer may be thinking about buying. As others have said, because it’s an easy way to understand what Recurrent offers, the service is like a Carfax report for EV batteries, giving buyers and sellers a verified way to know the shape a three-year-old Nissan Leaf battery, for example, is in. In September, Recurrent CEO Scott Case told Car and Driver that battery health is “the new odometer for electric cars.”
    After announcing itself to the world last June, Recurrent raised $3.5 million in seed financing in December for its independent verification technology. This week, according to Green Car Reports, AAA Washington and Recurrent announced a new partnership in a pilot project that remotely monitors the battery health of subscribers’ EVs and then compares them to the live of batteries in similar vehicles.
    People who sign up for the (for now) invite-only program will then get an alert if Recurrent determines their pack shows signs of “unusual wear and tear.” Participants also get tips on ways to keep their battery in top shape so that, when the time comes to sell, the EV will be able to command a premium compared to non-Recurrent EVs, Case wrote on the Recurrent company blog. Questions about battery health can block used-EV sales, which then “holds up the entire market in this really critical way,” Case told GCR.
    Thanks to a partnership with Smartcar, which provides end-to-end 256-bit encryption, Recurrent’s algorithm downloads four data points from registered EVs up to three times a day: charging status, battery level, odometer, and the car computer’s own range estimate. Most modern EVs are eligible to participate, as long as the current owner or lessee has an active account with an automaker’s connected vehicle service (for instance, NissanConnect EV or FordPass). So far, just over 2600 drivers with 18 different makes and models have volunteered to have their electric vehicles added to Recurrent’s program and more drivers are getting their invites in mid-January.
