2021 Super Soco CUmini Electric Scooter Debuts – Up To 70 Kms Range

    SuperSoco Electric Scooter
Super Soco CUmini comes with swappable batteries and with an electric motor capable of generating 600W power

In recent times we have seen the advent of several new electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, especially in the two-wheeler segment. It has been made very clear by governing authorities of various countries that for a sustainable future, fossil fuels have to make way for electric energy which will drive future automobiles.
Now, another electric mobility brand is making headlines with the unveiling of its new products. Super Soco recently unveiled three new offerings- two motorcycles and one scooter. The electric motorcycles- TC Wanderer and TS Street Hunter have been discussed at length in another story.
    SuperSoco Electric Scooter
    Styling
Besides the electric bikes, the company also unveiled CUmini electric scooter which will be positioned as an entry-level offering. Based on the more powerful CUx electric scooter, CUmini adopts a minimalistic and more modern design approach with a catchy slogan “Fun way to move”.
It looks visibly small and has been designed primarily for new riders and specifically for short, urban commutes. It will be made available in four paint schemes- black, gray, white and red.
    SuperSoco Electric Scooter
There are subtle differences in design between the Chinese-spec and the recently revealed Euro-spec models of CUmini. The Chinese version of CUmini doesn’t get conventionally positioned individual turn indicators which its European counterpart does.
Also, the China-spec model is offered in a single-seat layout whereas the Euro-spec version gets a two-seater layout. Although, by the looks of it a pillion seat could be installed in the former.
    Features on offer
Super Soco claims that CUmini gets a single-piece panel all-inclusive body design with its car-like headlights as one of the prominent highlights. In addition to a tubular-shaped headlamp with U-shaped outer ends positioned at its front apron, the e-scooter also gets a full-width strip of LED light placed on top behind the handlebar. The contrasting black colour on the handlebar, alloy wheels, floorboard and rearview mirrors add a nice sporty contrast to the scooter.
    SuperSoco Electric Scooter
In terms of equipment, it is decently equipped with features such as a keyless start with a remote, LED taillight, LED rear turn signals, 12-inch wheels and a monochrome LCD instrument cluster. This digital instrument cluster shows information battery charge, GPS positioning, alarm status along with other data by pairing it with Super Soco’s smartphone app. For an entry-level offering, CUmini gets a whole lot of features.
    Powertrain Specs
Coming to its specifications, it features a powertrain consisting of a 0.6 kW or 0.8 PS electric motor which draws its power from a 48V and 20Ah battery pack which has a capacity of 0.96 kWh. The best part is that the battery is swappable and weighs just 7.2 kg. The battery could be replenished using a home charger in seven hours and is claimed to provide a single-charge range of about 60-70 km. Being a low-powered scooter it can clock a top speed of only 45 kmph. More

Okinawa Electric Motorcycle Oki 100 Launch Soon – First Teaser Released

    Okinawa Electric Motorcycle Teaser
Save for the battery cells, all the other components of the electric bike will be sourced locally

Okinawa Autotech showcased the Oki 100 electric motorcycle in the form of a prototype in 2018 Auto Expo. At 2020 Auto Expo, the fast growing electric two wheeler brand announced that its first motorcycle will be launched in the festive season. However, just like several other cases, the Okinawa Oki 100’s launch plans were hampered by the pandemic crisis. Now that the market is recovering, the brand has teased the production version which is set to be launched soon.
    Okinawa Oki 100
The Okinawa Oki 100 is a compact commuter electric motorcycle which derives its styling inspiration from the Ducati Monster. The LED headlamp, red painted trellis frame, the pseudo fuel tank, and the tailpiece have obvious resemblance to the Italian middle-weight street fighter.
Compared to the prototype, the production version which has been teased seems to miss out on a few items in a bid to keep the costs in check. For example, the LED turn indicators have been done away with in favor of conventional halogen units. The company earlier confirmed that the Oki 100 will offer connectivity features with a dedicated smartphone app.
    Specifications
Without revealing the final specifications of the production version, Okinawa earlier stated that the motorcycle will have a top-speed of 100 kmph (hence the 100 in its name) and it will be heavily localized. In fact, save for the battery cells, all the other components will be locally made.
    Okinawa Electric Motorcycle Teaser
Capacity of the lithium ion battery pack has not been revealed yet but expect the electric commuter to have a range of up to 150 km on a single charge. For reference, the prototype which was showcased in 2018 was powered by a 60 Ah 73 V battery pack which was capable of charging in two hours through a fast charger. The motor was a 3.3 hp unit. Okinawa hinted that the final production version is most likely to have a different battery and motor combination but the key performance figures would remain intact.
The compact electric motorcycle is equipped with telescopic front forks, monoshock rear suspension, alloy wheels, front and rear disc brakes (could be offered with single-channel ABS), fully digital instrument console, and a belt drive.
    Rivals and price
With a near 100% localization right from day one, the Okinawa Oki 100 motorcycle is expected to be competitively priced. A starting price of around INR 1 lakh (ex-showroom) would be an attractive proposition.
Competition will come from the likes of Revolt RV400 which is already in the market and the upcoming Tork T6X which is likely to be introduced later this year. The Okinawa Oki 100 will be manufactured at the company’s Rajasthan plant. The electric commuter motorcycle is expected to widen Okinawa’s audience base significantly. More

Royal Enfield 650cc Cruiser KX650 Spied Testing With Pillion

    2021 Royal Enfield 650cc Cruiser
Royal Enfield is working on at least two new derivatives of its well received 650 cc parallel-twin platform

Royal Enfield’s product pipeline for this year looks very exiting. The company is in the process of transforming its entire portfolio, representing a clear shift in the paradigm. In order to achieve its long term goal of establishing leadership in the global medium displacement motorcycle segment, Royal Enfield needs to aggressively expand its product lineup, offer cool new features and increase the overall quality. That is exactly what brewing at the brand’s tech centers in India and the UK.
    Royal Enfield cruiser 650
Following the strong response to its flagship twin-clinder 650 cc models, Royal Enfield is working on variant extensions on this platform in a bid to cater to wider tastes.
First hint of a new family member was provided in the form of KX bobber concept at the EICMA 2018. After almost two years, first prototypes of a 650 cc twin-cylinder cruiser started to appear in public last year.
A near production ready prototype of the Royal Enfield cruiser 650 has been spotted up close once again in Chennai, giving us a proper idea on what to expect. The latest spy shot shows the test mule being tested with pillion. It is to be noted that RE is also working on a roadster variant which is sufficiently different from this cruiser as well as the existing Interceptor 650.
    2021 Royal Enfield 650cc Cruiser
With a low seat height, quintessential feet-forward riding position and a front heavy stance, the Royal Enfield cruiser 650 sticks to the script. The test mule appears to be riding on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels just like the Meteor 350.
The circular headlamp, turn indicators and taillight set a retro-classic tone and the simple fuel tank (we liked the KX’s unit better though) and instrument dial fit right into the scheme of things. Speaking of the instrument dial, it will incorporate Tripper Navigation system which is currently available in Meteor 350 and updated Himalayan.
    Hardware
In the interest of economies of scale, Royal Enfield is likely to carry forward the existing 650 cc twin-cylinder, air-cooled, parallel-twin engine which produces 47 hp and 57 Nm of torque in its current state of tune. The 6-speed transmission with tweaked ratios should make for good mile munching. The video gives us a sample of how the motorcycle sounds like and we like what we hear.
    2021 Royal Enfield 650cc Cruiser
In a first for modern Royal Enfields, the cruiser 650 is equipped with an inverted telescopic front fork. The rear employs traditional twin shock absorbers.
    Rivals
Globally, the Royal Enfield cruiser 650 will be aimed at the likes of Kawasaki Vulcan 650, Harley Davidson Street, Honda Rebel, and so on. In India, the upcoming medium displacement motorcycle is expected to be have a starting price a shade under INR 3 lakh (ex-showroom), making it a compelling proposition. More

In Utah, Letting Dogs Ride in Pickup Truck Bed May Be Illegal Soon

American Humane makes the astonishing claim that as many as 100,000 dogs are killed each year riding unrestrained in the back of a pickup truck.
A new state legislator in Utah has introduced the Transportation of Dogs Act to make sure this potentially dangerous activity becomes illegal.
Currently, only six states have specific laws against this sort of thing.
The state of Utah is about to consider legislation to make it illegal to let your dog(s) ride in the bed of a pickup truck. One impetus for the bill is the outrage that was created when the Utah Humane Society video (below) of a dog standing on a truck zooming down the highway went viral. Unrestrained dogs can be tossed around in the bed or fall off while the truck is moving—a problem with an easy solution, but even easy may be too hard for people used to the practice. Still, if the American Humane organization’s claim—that 100,000 dogs die each year from riding in pickup-truck beds—is anywhere near reality, it’s a serious problem.

Rep. Ashlee Matthews, the only Democrat to win in Utah in November, has introduced the Transportation of Dogs Act (officially, H.B. 386) to the state legislature. The bill would make it illegal for people to drive faster than 40 mph with unrestrained dogs in the back of their truck. There are exceptions for working farm dogs and hunting dogs or if the sides of the bed are at least 46 inches tall. A driver’s first violation would result in an infraction, and any further violations would be misdemeanors. Rep. Matthews did not respond to Car and Driver’s request for comment.

Unrestrained Pets Increase Distraction on the Road

Why Do Dogs Love Cars? We Ask the Experts

Bringing the Dog in the Car? Grab These Supplies

Deann Shepherd of the Humane Society of Utah told local news station WITN last year that the group would support a law similar to what Rep. Matthews has introduced. The Utah state legislative session ends March 5.
“This bill is long overdue,” said Rachel Heatley, Utah Humane Society advocacy director, in a statement. “This legislation is an easy and effective way to reduce distraction on Utah’s high-speed roadways and save countless lives of humans and animals.”
    Other States’ Laws
According to outdoor supplier Orvis, only six other states have laws that ban unrestrained dogs riding in truck beds: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Some states also forbid drivers from having dogs on their lap while driving, and some states require dogs to be in the back seat of cars. Orvis notes there are 16 states where the laws regarding dog transportation are ambiguous enough that it’s likely up to a law enforcement officer to decide if the way the dog is being carried is dangerous or against the law.
The American Humane Society says pets should always ride inside the cab, never in a truck bed. In fact, it is the first safety rule listed on the group’s website, which goes on to point out that it’s not just falling or jumping out of the bed that can hurt the animal. There’s no protection from the weather in the bed, so at the very least you should use a secured crate back there if you have to carry your dog and there’s no room in the cabin.
Dogs falling out of truck beds can also be hazardous to other drivers, but simply leashing your dog to the truck is not a good idea, the group said, because “many dogs have been strangled when tossed or bumped over the side of the truck and been left helplessly dangling.”

2021 Kawasaki Ninja H2 SX To Come Equipped With Radar System

    2021 Kawasaki H2 SX
With the new Ninja H2 SX, Kawasaki joins the likes of BMW, KTM and Ducati to come equipped with radar-based systems

Kawasaki is currently working on developing the new generation Ninja H2 SX and a test mule of the same was recently spotted testing somewhere in Japan. According to recent reports, this new Ninja H2 SX is expected to come equipped with radar-based assistance systems from the end of 2021.
    Radar-Based System From Bosch
From a recent spy shot, we can spot a small camera hidden at the lower section of the windscreen which will be the first for a radar-based system. In addition, a small sensor unit has been placed under its headlight. To accommodate these inclusions, the Japanese bikemaker has made some updates to its front fascia.
Back in 2019, Kawasaki had announced its partnership with Bosch in order to equip its premium motorcycles with radar-based systems. Therefore, it makes good sense to introduce it in one of its flagship products which are already heavily loaded with features.
Although Kawasaki is not the only one to be offering this technology in the near future. Manufacturers such as KTM, BMW and Ducati have also presented similar technologies from Bosch in their respective offerings including 1290 Super Adventure S, R 1250 RT and Multistrada V4.
    2021 Kawasaki H2 SX
    Features & Updated Design
The prime functionality of this technology is to provide radar-based adaptive cruise control for easier long-distance touring. Besides this new feature, there are going to other new creature comforts on offer. For instance, a fully digital TFT instrument cluster replaces the earlier part-analogue and part-digital console. The safety kit will consist of an adaptive distance and speed control, a collision warning and a blind spot assistant.
The inclusion of new features has brought subtle changes to its styling just like its front fascia. Kawasaki has adapted the fairing, the windshield and the air ducts in accordance with the camera and sensor at front end. Contrary to recent convention, the license plate holder at the rear section is significantly longer and holds the license plate much lower.
This adds to the speculation that the Japanese superbike brand might also offer a rear-facing radar-based system just like Multistrada V4. Or could just be the case where Kawasaki wants to improve the splash protection for the pillion.
    2021 Kawasaki H2 SX
    Powertrain Specs
Mechanically, the upcoming Ninja H2 SX will not be any different from its predecessor. It will probably be underpinned by the same architecture and offer the same hardware setup. It will draw its power from a Euro-5 compliant 998cc Liquid-cooled, In-Line Four-cylinder engine which in its previous iteration churned out 200 PS of power and 137.3 Nm of peak torque.
Ninja h2 SX is slated to make its debut towards the end of this year and is likely to go on sale starting early next year. It is still too early to comment whether or not it will arrive on Indian shores although we hope it does.

Aptera EV Trike Gets Big Bucks, Inches Closer to Production

Aptera, the startup aiming to make a three-wheeled electric vehicle, just got $4 million in funding.
That brings it closer to actual production, slated for the end of 2021.
    The ultra-efficient three-wheeled two-seater promises 1000 miles of range.
Electric-trike maker Aptera finally has what it needs to really get going: money. Last week the company announced it had closed on $4 million in Series A funding. “Aptera’s continued momentum has now garnered it over 7000 vehicle reservations in just over two months, totaling a quarter-billion in orders,” the company’s news section read.

Aptera Claims Its Solar EV Never Needs Charging

Aptera Wants to Build a 1000-Mile-Range EV

    2010 Aptera 2e

It goes on to say Aptera has moved into a new production design facility in the tony Sorrento Valley area of San Diego, just east of La Jolla. (Aside: Dr. Seuss lived in La Jolla and would probably have approved of the Aptera’s shape.)
The shape, like everything on the vehicle, is squeezed for efficiency. It has a ludicrous 0.15 coefficient of drag and a curb weight of just 1800 pounds. Depending on what battery you order and how much sun the rooftop panels can add to your drive, you could get 1000 miles of range out of this thing. If you live in a really, really sunny spot, you can gain over 41 miles a day in free electricity from the solar panels, or 11,484 extra free-sun-happy miles a day. If you live in, say, New York, you can still make between 11 and 30 miles a day. Most people don’t actually drive that far in a typical day, so for them, it’s basically free fuel forever.
Prices are still listed at between $25,900 and $46,900 for the high-efficiency two-seater, with the first deliveries planned for the end of this year. The company wants to hit 10,000 vehicles a year by 2022.
Below is a recent Aptera story with more details:
Anybody remember the Aptera 2e? The three-wheeled two-seater that looked like a flying pumpkin seed? Well it’s back, or it will be back, and the stats of the new model that its makers are throwing around sound crazy: a curb weight as low as 1800 pounds, range of up to 1000 miles(!), priced starting at $25,900.
    Incredible, right?
Let’s back up a bit, like about 14 years. In 2006 when the company was more or less founded, it was going to revolutionize transportation through efficiency. Three wheels instead of four allowed for the wild aerodynamic shape you see here, as well as skirting federal safety standards. Three-wheelers are generally classified as motorcycles by NHTSA, but if they’re enclosed like this one, you usually don’t have to wear a helmet.
An electric motor drove the rear wheel on that original model and produced an mpg equivalent of 200 miles per gallon. Pricing back then was going to be between $25,000 and $45,000. In 2008 it was entered in the Automotive X Prize contest with a claim of 300 mpg equivalent. Original plans called for a plug-in-hybrid version utilizing a 500-cc catalyst-equipped gasoline engine. The PHEV would compliment the battery electric models in the lineup.
All too soon, however, the money ran out, and a reported dispute (about whether the car should have roll-down windows, of all things) doomed production. The company closed its doors in 2011, not having delivered a single car to a customer.

    View Photos

Original founders Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony.
    Aptera

However, the original founders, Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony, never gave up. They are shown now posed with an Aptera, ready for the future.
The new car will be electric only, with a variety of battery packs available. The bigger the pack, the longer the range. Consider this: 25 kWh good for 250 miles of range; 40 kWh for 400 miles; 60 kWh for 600 miles; and the king-daddy 1000.0-kWh battery will give a promised—and unprecedented—1000 miles of range. That works out to 10 miles per kWh, by the way. Contemporary EVs are closer to 4 miles per kWh. So the pumpkin shape means two and a half times more range? That’s what they’re saying.
But the most interesting statistic may be the power of the solar roof. Most previous applications of solar roofs on electric or hybrid cars say they’re only good for a few hundred watts of power. Some carmakers say they’re only good to operate an exhaust fan to keep the car’s interior cooler on hot days. But Aptera says its roof options—up to three solar panels—can give you 60 miles of range. That’s unprecedented statistic number two. The maximum panel size is three square meters, which yields a claimed 700 watts of charge as long as the sun is shining. Say you live in South Miami and get 10 hours of direct, glaring sunlight a day—700 watts times 10 hours is 7.0 kWh. If this rig really does get 10 miles per kWh, that’d be good for 70 miles. Aptera is only claiming 60 miles, though it expresses that as 60 kilometers plus 24 miles. In the main press release it claims 45 miles. An earlier release, still on its website, said the solar roof would be good for 40 miles. Take your pick. Co-CEO Chris Anthony tries to explain:
“If you put our same solar package on a Prius, you could get maybe six or eight miles of charge range a day, which some people might find compelling, if you have a really short commute. For most people, it wouldn’t be worth the expense of the solar. But when you only burn 100 watt-hours per mile, like the Aptera does, the same solar package can get you 40-plus miles a day of range.”

    SEE FULL GALLERY

    Aptera

The trick is getting that 100 watt-hours, which, with the craft’s shape and light weight, seems entirely plausible. The company sums it all up with a statement:
“Aptera Motors today announced it has introduced the first solar electric vehicle (sEV) that requires no charging for most daily use and boasts a range of up to 1000 miles per full charge, shattering industry performance achievements to date. Aptera leverages breakthroughs in lightweight structures, low-drag aerodynamics and cooling, material science, and manufacturing processes to deliver the most efficient vehicle ever made available to consumers.”
The body is made of lightweight composites that are said to meet “all applicable safety standards.” Keep in mind that the standards applicable to a three-wheeler are nowhere near as stringent as those required of a four-wheeled, generic “car.” That’s okay. People ride motorcycles, don’t they?
That slippery exterior is said to have a drag coefficient of 0.13, which looks entirely possible. Power goes to all three wheels via hub motors in each wheel. Autonomous driving is said to be on the list of features, though no specifics were proferred.
Will it really happen this time? Deliveries are slated for “2021,” which gives them a little elbow room should there be yet another dispute about roll-down windows, or maybe cupholders. But it sure looks cool. The slice of electric car enthusiasts who program their own software will likely love this thing. As for the rest of the planet, well, who doesn’t want 1000 miles of range and free solar charging?
