      Upon launch, Hyundai Ioniq 5 is expected to be priced between Rs 40-50 lakh (ex-showroom)2022 Hyundai IONIQ5 In IndiaHyundai took its next big step in electric mobility when it officially unveiled the Ioniq 5 earlier in February last year. The mid-size electric crossover has been rumoured to land on Indian shores sooner or later but the Korean auto giant hadn’t released an official statement regarding this until now.The company has now stated through a press release that Ioniq 5 will be hitting showrooms across our country in the coming month. Official bookings will open from 20th Dec 2022. This will be the second fully electric offering by Hyundai in India after Kona Electric. The Korean brand has further stated that it will expand its EV lineup in India to six models by 2028.Hyundai Ioniq 5 Launch In IndiaAlthough an exact launch date for Hyundai Ioniq 5 hasn’t been revealed by the carmaker yet, it is most likely to planned for launch at Auto Expo 2023 in January next year. The electric crossover is also the recipient of the World Car of the Year 2022.Ioniq 5 will be available in the Indian market as a CKD product and will be assembled at the company’s facility near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Production of the upcoming electric crossover is expected to commence in the coming weeks. It is based on the Hyundai Group’s Skateboard Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that also underpins the Kia EV6.Hyundai Ioniq 5 20 Inch AlloysHyundai says the E-GMP architecture has been developed on four key pillars- Modularity, Reliability, Usability, and Performance. Speaking of its design, Ioniq 5 flaunts a futuristic design with a contrasting blend of retro-inspired styling which derives most of its elements from the Hyundai 45 concept including its overall silhouette and angular creases running across its profile.Some notable exterior highlights include pixelated U-shaped dual LED headlights and taillights, unique daytime running lights and a clamshell bonnet which is a first for Hyundai. It rides on aero-optimised 20-inch alloy wheels that are in line with the Parametric Pixel design theme.Powertrain SpecsInternationally, Ioniq 5 is available in two variants with different battery specs. One uses a 58 kWh battery and sends power to the rear wheels while the other variant uses a 72.6 kWh battery and sends power to all four wheels thanks to a dual-motor setup. The single-motor variant is expected to be offered to Indian consumers initially while the AWD variant is expected to launch subsequently.[embedded content][embedded content]The lower-spec battery when paired to a single electric motor returns a peak output of 167 bhp while it can clock a 0-100 kmph sprint in 8.5 seconds. On the other hand, the 72.6 kWh battery pack sends power to both axles and returns a combined output of 302 bhp and 605 Nm of peak torque. Hence, confirming that the latest Kona test mule is in fact, an EV.What Can We Expect?Less camouflaged ICE-powered Kona test mules have been spotted globally. It sports a full-width LED lightbar at the front as seen on other Hyundai products like Staria and Stargazer. It is also likely to get a trapezoidal-shaped LED headlight in its bumpers. Grille on ICE-powered Kona 2nd gen will be closed off for that typical EV appeal that we also see in MG ZS EV.It will also get body cladding all around and Ioniq 5 inspired minimalist interiors. In terms of powertrains, Hyundai is mum on this matter. But as Kona EV is expected to be similar to Kia Niro EV, we can expect the same motor and battery to be shared. Kia Niro EV gets a 200 bhp electric motor which draws power from a 64.8 kWh battery.Kia Niro EV can cover a claimed 463 km of range on a single charge with this relatively large battery. But Hyundai can also offer a smaller battery with a less powerful motor which will eek out a similar range on base variants. He has provided a detailed cost breakup of owning and maintaining the car and a rough calculation of how much money he has saved in comparison to petrol automatic and diesel automatic cars of a similar size and price.Owner of Kona EV mentions that in order to achieve 80,000km on the odometer, a total of 11 megawatts of electricity were used. This includes both public and home charging setup. For this, the owner had to spend a total cost of Rs. 91480. Around 90 percent of the charging was done via home charging while the rest were done from public charging stations.Charging cost of Hyundai Kona Electric – For 80,000 kmsHe further mentions that public chargers are more expensive but also quicker than standard home wall chargers. Getting into more details, the owner reveals that he has spent around Rs 18,500 on maintaining his car which includes regular service and other wear and tear items such as wiper blades, bulbs, etc. By his standards, this amount is very cheap.Charging cost of Hyundai Kona Electric – For 80,000 kmsThe highest cost of maintenance Rs 47,800 was incurred by a change in tyres which were replaced after 50,000km. After taking into account each and every cost attached, the owner reported an average running cost of Rs 1.37 per km. This was compared against the running cost of petrol- and diesel-powered Creta.Cost Comparison With Diesel, Petrol-powered CretaAfter collecting data from Creta owners, the Kona EV user came to realise that Creta petrol automatic owners would have to spend almost around Rs 7.00 lakh for the car to clock 80,000 km on its odometer. In case of a Creta diesel automatic, it would be around Rs 5.41 lakh. Both these figures are much greater than Rs 91,480 spent by the Kona EV user on electricity.Maintenance cost of Hyundai Kona Electric – For 80,000 kmsTherefore, savings in case of Kona EV stands at Rs 6,08 lakh and Rs 4.50 lakh when compared with petrol- and diesel-powered Creta. It ain’t no Mercedes-Benz EQS at 0.209 Cd air drag coefficient, but is still very impressive. The flush door handles and streamlined cameras replacing the mirrors certainly help in achieving such a low air drag coefficient.Hyundai Ioniq 6 Electric CarLaunch TimelineOn the inside, it radiates a minimalist vibe with dual 12” screens dominating the dashboard. Most of the car’s functionalities are expected to be controlled with these screens. Hyundai Ioniq 6 is expected to get a 77 kWh battery pack with either a single or dual motor layout with AWD. This combination might be good enough to yield 400 km to 500 km of range from a single charge.Hyundai hasn’t revealed a launch timeline for the Ioniq 6. The 2022 model has also received Smart Frequency Dampers (SFD), which improves ride comfort and handling.2022 Hyundai IONIQ5 In IndiaCurrently, there are reports which suggest that Hyundai might bring the Ioniq 5 to the country, mostly via the CBU route. Being a CBU, the Ioniq 5 might be priced at a premium, thanks to the duties and taxes.       Hyundai Motor India plans for a new electrification journey. This announcement comes at a time when Maruti Suzuki states that it will launch an electric vehicle in India only once its notes sufficient customer demand by 2025. Tata Motors, a leader in the electric vehicle segment, has plans to introduce 10 new electric vehicles over the coming 3 to 4 years.
      Even as Hyundai India’s electric offering currently only includes the Kona Electric SUV in India, things are about to change. As Hyundai expects a 53 percent surge in EV sales by 2028, the company has revealed its plans to embark on an extensive electrification journey. The project will include a total of 6 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV’s) which will span different segments and body styles including sedans and SUVs.
      E-GMP (Electric Global Modular) platform
      Hyundai’s upcoming electric vehicles covering both mass and premium segments, will be positioned on modified platforms and a dedicated E-GMP (Electric Global Modular) platform in India. The E-GMP platform, that spawns the iONIQ 5, will consist of a vehicle chassis that includes battery, motor and power electric system. It will receive scalable dimensions allowing for different body types while the vehicles will boast of a flat floor, sleek cockpit and spacious cabin.
      The platform has been developed on 4 pillars of Modularity, Reliability, Usability and Performance. Modularity means that this single platform will span different body types. It will be reliable to offer a lower center of gravity with Ultra High Strength Steel and 8 point battery mounting facilities while the flat floor and adjustable seating layout will ensure better interior space with sliding 2nd row seats.
      Hyundai India Electric Car Launch Plans 2028 – Rs 4k Cr Investment
      Where performance is concerned, there will be battery ratings upto 77.4 kWh and two wheel and four wheel drive capabilities along with improved handling and the capacity to reach a top speed of 260 km/h. Hyundai Motor India, Managing Director SS Kim states that high-speed electrification of the automotive sector has become a reality, with the share of EVs rising to as high as a fifth of the total in several markets.
      Made In India Electric Cars
      Apart from the premium E-GMP based electric cars, Hyundai also has plans to launch electric cars based on their existing lineup of ICE (petrol / diesel) vehicles. Though Hyundai has not revealed which of their existing cars will be launched as an electric car, they did say that SUVs will be a focus area.
      It will not be surprising if they start their ICE to EV journey from the likes of Venue or even the Creta. Tata Nexon EV is the highest selling electric car in the PV segment today. Hyundai Venue electric SUV will be a direct rival to the Nexon EV upon launch. They could also launch an entry level electric car based on i10 NIOS, which may become their most affordable EV in India.
      Charging Network
      Even as the electric vehicle segment in India is still in its nascent state, this is about to change. Hyundai’s electrification plan will see an investment to the tune of Rs 4,000 crores in India. This will be used for R&D of the upcoming EVs as well as developing supporting infrastructure.
      A recent study reveals that EV sales in the country could increase at a compounded annual growth rate of 53 percent to 1.75 lakh units by 2028 from 6,000 units in 2020. There are over 79,000 fast chargers being set up by various companies by 2025, up from 2,900 in 2021, which will dispel owner’s anxieties and see more electric vehicles on the road. More

      Hyundai has unveiled the Seven Concept SUV at the ongoing Los Angeles Auto Show 2021 which previews the South Korean automaker’s future sport utility electric vehicles (SUEV). In its final production form, which is expected to make its debut in 2024, the Seven Concept will be retailed as the Ioniq 7 electric SUV.
      Future EVs from Hyundai will be sold exclusively under the company’s subsidiary brand- Ioniq. The Seven Concept is based on the same Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) which currently underpins Ioniq 5 and its cousin Kia EV6. This architecture also underpins the upcoming Kia EV9 Concept.
      Proportions of the Seven Concept are expected to be around the same region as the carmaker’s current flagship SUV- Palisade. Offering a wheelbase of 3,200mm, the Seven Concept has a very long side profile which translates to a spacious cabin.
      The Seven Concept holds great significance for Hyundai since the company plans to go all-electric by 2045. As with most automobile concepts, the Seven Concept SUV looks futuristic and a little too gimmicky which suggests it’s far away from being production-ready at this point. The Korean carmaker has carried forward a neo-retro design of Ioniq 5 into the concept SUV.

      Exterior Design
      Notable exterior highlights include ‘Parametric Pixel’ lights up front, a faux mesh grille and vertical fog lamps giving the SUV’s face an elegant look. The SUV rides on chunky 5-spoke alloy wheels with ‘Active Air’ flaps, which deploy or retract for brake cooling and low-drag purposes respectively. The roofline also tapers down gently lending it a slight coupe-like appearance.
      The side profile features more exotic highlights such as pillar-less coach doors, roof rails, squarish wheel arches and retracting cameras that replace traditional wing mirrors. At rear, the Seven Concept gets an all-glass tailgate with pixel-like tail-lights and an illuminated Hyundai logo.
      Interiors & Features
      Inside the cabin, the SUV offers a very different layout from a conventional three-row SUV. While the first- and second-row receive swiveling lounge chairs, the third-row features a wrap-around sofa-type configuration. Passengers can witness their favourite visuals on a massive OLED screen on the glass roof. Moreover, the doors open outwards like a Rolls Royce.

      As luxurious as it is, the cabin of Seven Concept has been built with sustainable materials and renewable resources like mineral plaster, copper, bamboo wood, recycled fabric and bamboo wood.
