    With the launched of their Windsor EV, JSW MG Motor India has had a rather successful strategy to turn the tides around. Windsor EV has received excellent reception and it clocked over 15K bookings on the first day. The company has now commenced deliveries of MG Windsor to customers during the auspicious festive season.

    The company has successfully cracked the code and introduced a whole new pricing strategy to accelerate faster adoption of EVs. Called BaaS (Battery as a Service), MG is offering battery rental schemes enabling extremely competitive Ex-sh prices. Soon, BaaS program was extended to incorporate Comet and ZS EV as well.

    With BaaS as a potent weapon in their arsenal, JSW MG Motor India has successfully launched Windsor EV and has commenced deliveries of the same. At the same time, MG has launched “Live Business Class” campaign and released a TVC highlighting Windsor EV as the most comfortable vehicle in its segment.
    Windsor EV is a 4.3m long electric vehicle that starts at Rs 9.99 lakh (Ex-sh) with BaaS. The company is further sweetening the deal by offering one year free charging for Windsor EV buyers. Included in the package are comprehensive warranty and buyback plans that will appeal to prospective buyers.

    Without BaaS, MG Windsor EV prices are still attractive as it starts from Rs 13.5 lakh (Ex-sh). For the price, MG Windsor EV packs quite a lot of features and equipment along with offering unmatched comfort. Notable exterior features include pop-out flush door handles, 18-inch alloy wheels and all-LED lighting among others.
    On the inside, we get an expansive space with a lot of room for both front seat and rear seat occupants. There is a comprehensive package of features to cater to tech-savvy buyers and exceptional quality of materials used along with excellent fit and finish. The 38 kWh battery promises up to 332 km of range from a single charge.

    With the launch of BYD eMAX 7, India just got another premium MPV to spoil the buyers around the festive season. Currently, it is Toyota that absolutely trounces rivals in the premium MPV space with the popular Innova Crysta and the newer and more tech-savvy Innova Hycross.
    Because Innova Crysta is a ladder frame MPV powered by a diesel engine, it is not an immediate rival to BYD eMAX 7. Leaving Toyota’s Innova Hycross Hybrid as the primary size-wise and price-wise rival. How does the just-launched BYD eMAX 7 compare against Innova Hycross Hybrid on paper? Let’s take a look.

    The comparison, BYD eMAX 7 vs Innova Hycross, is a lot more interesting than one might think. We say this because BYD is priced very attractively and the top-spec Superior trim even undercuts Innova Hycross Hybrid’s top-spec ZX(O) trim, despite packing a larger 71.8 kWh battery as opposed to Innova Hycross’ small 1.6 kWh – 1.7 kWh battery pack.
    Among the main reasons for BYD eMAX 7’s attractive pricing is due to the more attractive tax benefits pure EVs enjoy over Hybrid vehicles. Dimensionally, both vehicles are close to each other, but Innova Hycross is 45 mm longer, 35 mm wider, 95 mm taller and has a 50mm longer wheelbase when compared to eMAX 7. Ground clearance is higher on Hycross by 15 mm.

    Also, Hycross comes with larger 18-inch alloys, while eMAX 7 has 17-inchers. Because of the large proportions, Hycross’ 18-inch wheels look tiny, while the ones on eMAX 7 look adequate. Specs-wise, both are monocoque FWD vehicles and are yet to be crash-tested. BYD eMAX 7 has up to 71.8 kWh battery with up to 530 km claimed pure electric range.
    On Hycross, battery is a tiny unit and Toyota doesn’t mention pure electric range at all. In Pure EV mode, maximum speed Hycross can achieve is 40 km/h, beyond which the IC engine takes over. Where performance is concerned, eMAX 7 has an upper hand as it has up to 201 bhp of peak power and 310 Nm of peak torque and can sprint to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds and hit 180 km/h top speed.

    Which is more feature loaded?
    As both vehicles closely match in Ex-sh pricing, prospective buyers might aggressively compare between the two in the features department. Starting with safety features, both get ADAS with multiple airbags along with a 360-degree camera. Both offer front electrically adjustable seats, front ventilated seats, auto LED headlights, wireless charging pad, electronic parking brake, electric tailgate and more.
    However, Innova Hycross takes the cake here as it concentrates a lot more on 2nd row passengers. It offers rear sun shades and electrically adjustable seats with ottomans. Also, Toyota rightfully offers a separate climate zone for 2nd row passengers, unlike many OEMs who offer dual-zone feature for each front occupants, which isn’t logical.
    BYD eMAX 7
    In comparison, eMAX 7 offers a single zone climate control and even misses out on an auto-dimming IRVM. BYD eMAX 7 strikes back when it comes to infotainment experience as it offers a larger 12.8-inch screen, which is rotatable to suit personal preferences and it is the only one to offer projector headlights, swipe-style rear indicators, TPMS and an NFC key card.
    Hycross offers a panoramic sunroof, while eMAX 7 gets a fixed glass roof. On paper, BYD eMAX 7 appears to be a more performance-oriented driver/owner’s vehicle. Whereas, Innova Hycross appears to be more catering to chauffeur-driven owners owing to its extensive rear-seat conveniences. Price and features-wise, they are pretty neck-and-neck, with both boasting strengths in their own regards.

    Tata Punch EV, Tiago EV Get More Accessible – Additional Savings Up To Rs 56,000

    With multiple options in the entry-level EV segment, Tata Motors has acquired close to 2/3rd market share. To boost sales during the festive season, prices of select variants of Nexon EV, Punch EV and Tigor EV were recently reduced by up to Rs 3 lakh. And now, Tata has announced more savings for potential buyers.
    Tata Punch EV – Up to Rs 26,000 savings
    For both the MY2023 and MY2024 models of Punch EV, Tata Motors is offering a cash discount of Rs 20,000. In addition, a corporate discount of up to Rs 6,000 can also be availed by eligible customers. The cash discount is being offered in the form of Green Bonus.
    Earlier in September, Tata Motors had announced the Festival of Cars festive offers for select electric models. Punch EV was also part of this offer, with prices reduced by up to Rs 1.2 lakh on select variants. Punch EV is now more accessible at a starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh, as compared to Rs 10.99 lakh earlier. For the top variant, prices were reduced from Rs 14.99 lakh to Rs 13.79 lakh.
    Tata Tiago EV – Up to Rs 56,000 savings
    Customers planning to buy Tiago EV can access max savings of up to Rs 56,000. Provided that they choose the mid-spec XT variant with the 24-kWh battery pack that offers a range of 275 km. A cash discount of Rs 50,000 and corporate discount of up to Rs 6,000 is applicable on this variant of Tiago EV. Folks buying the entry-level XE or XT (smaller 19.2 kWh battery pack) variant of Tiago EV can benefit from a cash discount of Rs 10,000. Variants with the smaller battery pack offer a range of 221 km.

    Last month, the top variant of Tiago EV had witnessed a price reduction of up to Rs 40,000. It is now available at Rs 10.99 lakh, as compared to Rs 11.39 lakh earlier. Base variant of Tiago EV is available at Rs 7.99 lakh. With the latest cash discount and corporate discount, Tiago EV has become even more accessible.
    Managing headwinds
    While OEMs announce festive offers every year, the recent price cuts and cash discounts and corporate discounts for Tata EVs could also be a strategy to overcome negative market sentiments. At a time when the EV segment is expected to register strong growth, the MoM numbers for electric car sales show an overall decline of -7.32% in September 2024.
    Even the second best selling electric car brand MG Motor has registered negative MoM growth in the month. In the mainstream EV segment, Mahindra and Citroen have registered strong growth. Although, actual sales numbers are a small fraction when compared to ICE car sales.
    Talking about Tata Motors, the company is contemplating other measures as well to boost sales. For example, the BaaS (Battery as a Service) option can be introduced for all Tata electric cars. With BaaS, customers will be able to access these EVs at a lower price point. Recently launched MG Windsor EV received 15,176 bookings in a single day.     Economic concerns, reduced incentives and sufficient charging infrastructure has led to the electric car segment seeing lackluster sales over the past few months. Lower sales both on a year on year (YoY) and month on month (MoM) basis was experienced in September 2024 to just 5,874 units sold. Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), sales results showed many brands report lower sales while there were some gainers in this segment.
    Tata Motors Leads Electric Car Segment
    Total electric car sales in the past month stood at 5,874 units. This was a YoY de-growth by 7.76% from 6,368 units sold in Sept 2023. MoM sales also declined by 7.32% from 6,338 units sold in August 2024. This was the lowest sales recorded in this segment during the period January to Sept 2024.
    Electric Car Sales Sep 2024 – YoY Comparison
    Tata Motors, with the healthiest lineup of electric cars, among which are the likes of Nexon, Tiago, Tigor, Punch and new Curvv EV, has recorded retail sales at 3,621 units in Sept 2024. This was a marked decline of 16.26% over 4,325 units sold in Sept 2023. MoM sales also suffered a setback by 11.38% from 4,086 units sold in Aug 2024. Tata Motors is planning to launch BaaS (Battery as a Service) for its electric lineup which will relate to significantly lower pricing.
    MG Motor has the Comet and ZS EV along with the new Windsor in this segment, sales of which have seen a 9.16% YoY growth to 977 units in the past month from 895 units sold in Sept 2023. MoM sales however, declined massively by 27.79% over 1,353 units sold in Aug 2024.
    Electric Car Sales Sep 2024 – MoM Comparison
    Mahindra EV lineup, which currently sees the XUV400 as the only offering in this segment, has seen outstanding demand. Sales improved by 26.82% YoY and 43.22% MoM to 454 units. This was a growth over 358 units and 317 units sold in Sept 2023 and Aug 2024 respectively. In a bid to extend its EV segment, Mahindra is also actively testing the new range of electric SUVs among which the e9 and BE05 could be the first to launch as they have been recently seen during a TVC shoot.
    Citroen electric car retail sales saw overwhelming demand last month. Sales improved to 386 units which was a 169.93% YoY and 142.77% MoM growth. BYD India also showed YoY growth in electric car retail sales by 7.95% to 163 units while there had been 151 units sold in Sept 2023. MoM sales on the other hand declined by 22.01% from 209 units sold in Aug 2024.
    BMW Sales Exceed Mercedes in Luxury Segment
    German luxury car maker BMW India is a leader in the luxury segment with sales of 106 units in Sept 2024. The company reported both YoY and MoM growth by 37.66% and 68.25% respectively over 77 units and 63 units sold in Sept 2023 and Aug 2024. Mercedes electric car sales also surged YoY and MoM to 81 units last month. This was a 10.96% YoY and 68.75% MoM growth over 73 units and 48 units sold in Sept 2023 and Aug 2024 respectively.
    Lower down the sales list was Hyundai with 26 unit sales, reporting a double digit YoY and MoM decline by 67.79% and 33.33% while Kia India’s EV6 sales dipped to 17 units in the past month. There had been 35 units sold in Sept 2023 while in Aug 2024, sales were at 18 units.
    Volvo also reported significantly lower sales last month down to 15 units. This was a 72.73% YoY decline from 55 units sold in Sept 2024 while MoM sales were down 48.28% over 29 units sold in Aug 2024. Audi sales also fell 57.69% to 11 units over 26 units sold in Sept 2023 while there were others in this segment that added 17 units to total sales relating to a 142.86% MoM growth from 7 units sold in Aug 2024.     Kia has started testing the EV4, a crossover sedan with SUV flavours and a sloping coupe roofline as well. EV4 is expected to be launched in 2025. Ahead of that, latest spy shots have revealed the interiors of Kia EV4.
    Kia EV4 cockpit revealed
    While test vehicles have been spotted earlier also, this is the first time the interiors of Kia EV4 have been revealed. A number of features appear to be borrowed from Kia EV3 that was introduced earlier this year in June.
    Upcoming Kia EV4 Electric
    One of the key attractions is the large widescreen panel. It has dual 12.3-inch screens for the touchscreen and the driver instrument display. In between, there’s a 5.3-inch climate control display. The widescreen covers more than half of the dashboard’s length.
    Below the floating widescreen, there’s a control panel with touch-sensitive buttons. These can be used to access the primary shortcuts such as Home, Media and Map. For practical convenience, EV4 has a conventional circular dial for the volume control. The AC vents are mounted on either side. With only a few physical buttons, the interiors look neat and decluttered. Similar to the EV3, the EV4 is expected to get a multi-layered dashboard.
    Upcoming Kia EV4 Electric
    Several of the tech features seen with EV3 could be introduced in EV4. For example, Kia EV4 could get the ChatGPT-powered AI digital assistant that is designed to improve overall user experience. Based on generative AI, the digital assistant can process various voice commands and act accordingly. It can provide travel related information, make music recommendations and control vehicle functions. With generative AI like ChatGPT, the possibilities are limitless. Kia EV4 will also be getting the regular tech features such as wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

    Kia EV4 specs, performance
    Similar to Kia EV3, EV6, EV9 and various Hyundai and Genesis cars, the Kia EV4 also utilizes the Hyundai Motor Group E-GMP electric platform. Among these, only the EV3 has a 400-volt electrical system. Other cars utilize an 800-volt electrical system that is more advanced and capable of enabling faster charging. There are other benefits as well such as improved efficiency and performance.
    It will be interesting to see if Kia EV4 gets the 400-volt or 800-volt electrical system. Assuming that Kia will be aiming to introduce the EV4 at an attractive price point, the 400-volt electrical system will be more suitable. Battery pack options for Kia EV4 include a 58.3 kWh and an 81.4 kWh unit. Base variants will have a single motor setup, generating 201 hp. Higher variants could get AWD option, enabled with a dual-motor setup.
    While this test vehicle has the sedan body style, Kia EV4 is also expected to get another variant with an upright hatchback rear format. This was evidenced with another test vehicle spotted earlier. Upon launch, Kia EV4 will rival Tesla Model 3.

    Mahindra XUV700 EV test vehicles have been spotted frequently in recent months. Latest spy shots are credited to automotive enthusiast Aniket Kashyap, who managed to click these test mules in Ladakh. While wrapped in full camouflage, it is easy to see that much of the exterior profile is the same as the ICE model.

    However, XUV700 EV version will have a new front fascia. It will include a closed-off grille, new lighting elements and refreshed bumper section. Side profile of XUV700 EV closely mirrors the ICE model. Some of the key highlights include flush door handles, circular wheel arches, chrome window garnish and slightly tapering rear roof section. XUV700 EV will offer more refined aesthetics with its aerodynamic, low-drag alloy wheels.
    The charging port for XUV700 EV is installed on the left, the same position where the ICE variant has the fuel filler. At the rear, the overall profile will be largely the same as the ICE model. There could be some tweaks to the tailgate and bumper. XUV700 EV will feature unique badging elements that highlight its electric underpinnings.

    Digital cockpit experience
    While the exteriors seem quite familiar, the interiors of XUV700 EV will offer a more premium experience and multiple new features. One of the test vehicles was recently spotted with a triple-screen layout that covers almost the entire length of the dashboard. Such premium features will be available with the top variants of XUV700 EV. Mahindra will focus on reducing clutter and enhancing the digital cockpit experience.

    XUV700 EV will have advanced tech features such as 5G network capability and 5 Radars-1 Vision technology. The SUV is designed to support future upgrades such as L2+ autonomous driving and ADAS. A comprehensive range of connected features will be available with XUV700 EV.

    Mahindra’s born-electric INGLO platform that underpins XUV700 EV can support battery packs of up to 80 kWh capacity. In that case, XUV700 EV could have a range of around 500 km. Earlier spy shots had revealed a rear motor, indicating that the SUV will have a dual-motor AWD option. With fast charging of up to 175 kWh, users will be able to achieve up to 80% charging in just 30 minutes.
    In the electric segment, Mahindra currently offers only the XUV400. Sales are relatively low, when compared to Mahindra’s hugely popular ICE SUVs. Nonetheless, even with just a single EV model in its portfolio, Mahindra is already ranked third in the list of best selling EV brands in the country.     India’s premium MPV space just witnessed a new launch in the form of BYD eMAX 7. Not only is this a premium MPV, but it is powered by electric powertrains, promising a quiet and comfortable journey for occupants. BYD has priced it at Rs 26.9 lakh (Ex-sh), which is a tempting proposition for MPV buyers in India.

    With the launch of BYD eMAX 7, the company has unlocked a new chapter by refining its offerings in this segment. It has to be noted that eMAX 7 is the successor of the now-discontinued e6 MPV. There are four colours to choose from – Cosmos Black, Crystal White, Harbour Grey and Quartz Blue.

    BYD has launched eMAX 7 in two trim levels – Premium and Superior, catering to a wider audience. While Premium trim comes with a 55.4 kWh battery pack promising 420 km of range on a single charge (NEDC), Superior boasts a larger 71.8 kWh battery pack with 530 km on a single charge (NEDC).

    Premium supports a maximum of 89 kW DC charging, while Superior can charge at speeds up to 115 kW DC. Where AC charging is concerned, both get 7 kW support. Both trims come equipped with a sole 310 Nm electric motor driving the front wheels with 180 km/h top speed. Premium packs 161 bhp of peak power with 10.1s 0-100 km/h and Superior has 201 bhp with 8.6s 0-100 km/h sprint.

    Where dimensions are concerned, BYD eMAX 7 measures 4,710 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, 1,690 mm in height and a long 2,800 mm wheelbase. Ground clearance is 170 mm and there is a 180L boot space with 3rd row up, which can be expanded to 580L with 3rd row folded down.

    BYD eMAX 7 comes with all four disc brakes as standard. It has to be noted that only the front discs are ventilated type. 17-inch alloy wheels are standard too, wrapped with 225/55-R17 tyres. When compared to e6, eMAX 7 boasts a lot more soothing and mature design. It has a Dragon Face design with a handsome fascia.

    Both LED headlights are connected with a strip in the middle that also carries BYD logo. Front bumper has an interesting design to reduce visual bulk and creases on the tapering bonnet give some aggression.     On the inside, well laid-out dashboard along with a three-spoke steering take centre stage. BYD eMAX 7 comes with both 6-seater and 7-seater configurations and synthetic leather seat upholstery is standard.     Today, there are more electric cars to choose from, than there were a couple of years ago. Also, there are more purchasing options today, further accelerating EV adoption. Appealing to buyers more, is the new BaaS programs introduced by MG Motor, quoting significantly lower upfront Ex-sh prices.
    In a bid to retain its market share in electric car segment and offer significantly lower Ex-sh prices, Tata Motors is reportedly working to introduce BaaS model with their electric lineup. When launched, Tata’s BaaS program might be available with Nexon EV, Punch EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV and the recently launched Curvv EV.

    India’s leading electric car manufacturer, Tata Motors, leads the segment with around 65% market share. But there is a considerable 14.57% drop in sales YoY in August 2024. The company is now reportedly considering launching BaaS programs of its own to quote significantly lower Ex-sh prices. Launch timeline is still unknown.
    JSW MG Motor India was the first to launch BaaS (Battery as a Service) program in India. Starting with Windsor EV, JSW MG Motor India has redefined electric vehicle pricing and then extended their BaaS model to include Comet EV and ZS EV. Customer reception seems to be very positive towards BaaS concept as MG Windsor EV bagged more than 15K bookings on the first day.
    Tata Punch EV – Car Marvel
    By offering battery rental service, MG quoted significantly lower Ex-sh prices than typical EVs where battery was included in the package as part of the ownership. Mahindra took notice of this and is offering BaaS model with their newly launched Zeo commercial 4W pickup truck. Notably, Mahindra has not announced BaaS model on XUV400, their electric offering in PV segment.
    As of now, Tata’s electric portfolio starts from Rs 7.99 lakh (Ex-sh) for Tiago EV, Rs 9.99 lakh (Ex-sh) for Punch EV, Rs 12.49 lakh (Ex-sh) for Nexon EV and Tigor EV and Rs 17.49 lakh (Ex-sh) for Curvv EV. We hope Tata reduces upfront Ex-sh prices by around 25% to 30% and quotes battery rental of Rs 2.5 to Rs 3.5 per km covered.

    How will BaaS help?
    If there is around 30% reduction in Ex-sh prices with BaaS as per the report, we can expect Tiago EV to start at around Rs 5.6 lakh (Ex-sh + Rental), Punch EV from Rs 7 lakh (Ex-sh + Rental), Tigor EV and Nexon EV from Rs 8.75 lakh (Ex-sh + Rental) and Curvv EV from Rs 12.25 lakh (Ex-sh + Rental).
    If we take MG Windsor EV with BaaS and Tata Curvv EV without BaaS, there is a Rs 7.5 lakh difference in upfront Ex-sh price with base variants. With the Rs 7.5 lakh saved, a Windsor EV buyer can drive 2,14,285 km paying Rs 3.5 per km battery rental charge to MG. Considering that majority of EV buyers probably need more than 10 years to clock that mileage, the lower upfront cost facilitated by BaaS model is very impressive.
