    Harley Davidson Custom 1250 To Enter Production Next Year

    Harley Davidson is going through a rough period where sales and their finances in major markets is concernced. Recently, the iconic American brand had to quit operations in India after an ordinary performance for over a decade. In other markets as well it has been struggling to rack up sales.
    Still, the bikemaker has quite a cult following across the globe. In India, operations like sales and manufacturing of Harley Davidson bikes will be carried out by Hero MotoCorp. Despite these difficult times, Harley Davidson continues to plan its future with new products.
    Harley Davidson had revealed Custom 1250 sometime back. But there were uncertainties about the motorcycle entering production anytime soon. Now, the brand has confirmed its launch by listing the Sportster on the Future Vehicles section of its official website.
    The model was first showcased in July 2018 along with Bronx Streetfighter and Pan America ADV-tourer. It was earlier slated to enter production in 2022, however, it seems the company wants it out in markets a little earlier in order to rack up some sales.

    Mechanical Details
    Harley Davidson Pan American and Custom 1250 were announced for production at EICMA 2019 in Italy. Both motorcycles share a lot in common, even though they are completely different bikes. They are powered by Harley Davidson’s new 1250cc Revolution Max liquid-cooled V-twin motor which pushes out 150 bhp and 122 Nm of peak torque.
    Hardware on the bikes is likely to consist of fully-adjustable Showa suspension and Brembo brake callipers. As far as its weight is concerned, it is expected to tip the weighing scales over 240 kg.
    Custom 1250 Design
    Coming to its design, Custom 1250 prototype shares many of its styling elements with Fat Bob. For example, its sleek headlamp and high-mounted shotgun dual exhaust. The motorcycle features a wide handlebar, single-piece saddle, side swingarm, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank and chunky tyres with compact fenders.
    Even though it received a stripped-down styling which is sportier than most other Harleys, its overall silhouette is still long and low like a cruiser. Interestingly despite its hefty design it still gets a single disc brake at the front.

    Pan America Design
    Along with Custom 1250, Harley is also expected to come out with the production-spec Pan America which is an adventure tourer. It features a futuristic design tenet which is highlighted by a sleek rectangular headlamp that is surrounded by an inverted U-shaped fairing. It gets typical ADV elements such as a wide handlebar, engine crash guard, knuckle protectors, minimal side panels, wire-spoke rims with knobby tyres, adjustable windscreen and high ground clearance.
    Both motorcycles upon their launch will directly rival their counterparts – Custom 1250 rivalling Honda Rebel 1100 and Pan America rivalling Africa Twin. More details about these models are expected to be furnished in the next few months as their launch nears. More

    Ather 450X Electric Scooter To Launch In 16 New Cities – First TVC

    Phase 2 of expansion will see Ather Energy launch Ather 450X in 16 additional cities – Mysore, Hubli, Jaipur, Indore, Panaji, Bhubaneshwar, Nasik, Surat, Chandigarh, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Guwahati, Nagpur, Noida, Lucknow and Siliguri. Planned and rapid expansion is encouraged by Ather Energy’s products, dealership requests, and volume of test ride requests.
    Ather Energy is geared to meet national demand by Q1 2021, when Ather 450X will be available across 27 cities in India. Buyers will be eligible to get their hands on the limited-edition Series 1 vehicle for orders placed in January 2020, prior to official launch of the new product line.
    Business in new cities will begin in a staggered manner by Q1 2021. Test rides will let potential consumers experience the vehicle. Ather mobile app offers personalised ride statistics, charging status, push navigation, and other functionalities. This includes theft and tow detection, live location & vehicle state tracking.
    Ather Energy expansion
    Ather is in discussion with prospective retail partners and is zeroing in on locating spaces to set up its fast EV charging network, Ather Grid.     Ather 450X is an upgrade from the 450. It’s quick and smart, and available in three new colours – Grey, Green, and White. Power comes from a 6kW PMSM motor, a 2.9 kWh lithium-ion battery, to support 4 riding modes. Eco, Ride, and Sport aside, the high- performance Warp mode is a new addition.
    Ather 450X goes from 0 to 40 kmph in 3.3 sec in Warp mode. On that mode, its’ the quickest 125cc category scooter. Ather 450X charges 50 percent faster than earlier at 1.5km per minute. This is the fastest charging rate in the electric two-wheeler category.
    Ather 450X features
    Features include 4G SIM card and Bluetooth connectivity to manage phone calls and music on the touchscreen dashboard. The 7″ touchscreen dashboards colour depth of 16M, and a Snapdragon Quad-Core processor. Ather 450X uses Android Open Source to support Google map navigation, on-board diagnostics, and features like Over-the-air updates, Auto Indicator off and Guide- me-home lights.

    2021 Honda CBR150R Makes Global Debut – New Yamaha R15 Rival

    Honda has launched its entry-level faired motorcycle CBR150R in Thailand. The updated fully faired sports bike comes with new paint scheme options. Other than added colour schemes there are no other changes brought by the Japanese brand. Earlier, it was speculated that the bike would get USD front fork suspension units which didn’t happen.
    New Colours on offer
    The latest iteration of CBR150R is offered in four dual-tone colour options which include Matte Black with Red, Grey with Red, Red with Black and Black with Orange. Out of the four colour combinations, Grey with Red comes with the most funky-looking body graphics and decals.
    Overall Design & Hardware
    This said colour comes with a red front wheel, red underbelly cowl and sporty graphics with a hint of yellow. The overall design and colour schemes of CBR150R have been inspired by higher CBR models such as CBR650R and CBR1000RR-R.
    It continues to exhibit its signature dual-LED headlamps which are integrated with eye-grabbing LED DRLs. The bike gets low-set clip-on handlebars which demand an aggressive lean forward position accompanied by the rear-set footpegs.

    The sculpted fuel tank, fairing-mounted rear-view mirrors, split-style seats and a high-rise tail section enhance the bike’s sporty appeal. The contrasting exhaust canister tip also accentuates the sporty look. Coming to its hardware, suspension duties on the bike is handled by telescopic forks at front and a rear mono-shock. Braking duties are taken care of by petal-type disc brakes on both wheels.
    Powertrain Specs
    In terms of its powertrains, the latest version of CBR150R derives its power from a 149cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine which comes with a DOHC setup and four valves. The motor kicks out a power of 17.1 PS at 9000 rpm and a peak torque of 14.4 Nm at 7000 rpm. This unit comes equipped with Honda’s PGM-Fi fuel-injection system and eSP technology. Transmission is carried out by a six-speed gearbox as standard.

    The new 2021 Honda CBR150R has been priced at THB 99,700 which roughly translates to INR 2.43 lakh. The bike is very popular especially in South East Asian countries although it is unlikely to launch in India anytime soon. It directly locks horns with Yamaha R15.
    Honda is rather looking to introduce the updated 2021 CB300R in India which is expected to launch sometime early next year. The naked streetfighter got discontinued earlier this year and is expected to make a return in its updated BS6 complaint form soon.     The 2021 KTM 125 Duke, the smallest sibling of the Duke family gets updated. This smallest commuter bike, which was initially launched in 2018 and went on to be one of the best sellers in the company lineup. Price is introductory – Rs 1.5 lakh, ex-sh, Delhi. This makes it about Rs 8k more expensive than older Duke 125.
    Seeing the good sale response, KTM India has now decided to update the Duke 125 design, and make it look more like other Duke’s in the family. 2021 Duke 125 is updated in terms of design and features. Initial examples have started moving into company showrooms and bookings have also opened. Deliveries start in coming days.
    New vs Old KTM Duke 125
    Design and Features
    The KTM 125 Duke borrows heavily from its larger 200 Duke. It is based on the company’s new design language also seen on the KTM 200 Duke. It is positioned on the same steel trellis framework integrated with bolt on sub-frame and borrows parts such as the headlamp, body panels, fuel tank and LCD screen making the 125 Duke almost identical to the larger 200 Duke.
    The 2021 KTM 125 Duke also get updates in tank extensions and at the rear end while new colour options are also a part of the update. As seen on the 200 Duke and 250 Duke, the new 125 Duke also receives an LCD instrument cluster but misses out on Bluetooth connectivity as is seen on the 390 Duke.     Targeting a younger and more adventurous set of buyers in the country, the 125 Duke will get a larger fuel tank of 13.5 liter capacity as against the 11 liter tank seen on its current counterpart. Overall weight has been increased by 7 kgs and seat height goes up from a current 818 mm to 822 mm. The updated KTM 125 Duke is also likely to get two colour options of orange with white and white with black.
    Engine & Gearbox
    The updated KTM 125 Duke gets its power via a BS6 124cc, liquid cooled, single cylinder engine offering 14.5 hp power at 9,250 rpm and 12 Nm torque at 8,000 rpm mated to a 6 speed transmission. These are the same figures as seen on its BS4 engine. Braking and suspension are the same via 300mm front disc brakes and 230mm disc at the rear and 43mm WP upside down fork in the front and WP monoshock at the rear.

    Royal Enfield Meteor 350 started generating a lot of buzz way before its actual launch and even after a month of its official launch, it doesn’t seem to die down. There were very high expectations from this modern cruiser which has stepped into the big shoes of its predecessor Thunderbird and Royal Enfield seems to have ticked almost all boxes.
    Meteor 350 is Royal Enfield’s first of its next generation single cylinder motorcycles with brand new chassis and powertrain. The bike has caught the eyeballs of biking enthusiasts instantly with its cruiser-like low-slung stance, forward set footpegs and a raised handlebar.
    However, it is not one of the traditional cruisers. These have a very low stance with relatively long front forks and a longer wheelbase. Point in case is Bajaj Avenger which sports a traditional cruiser design. Meteor 350 like the discontinued Thunderbird model is a cross between a cruiser and a street bike. Here we have with us a digitally modified Meteor 350 rendered as a traditional cruiser.

    In a video, created and uploaded by SRK Designs on YouTube we get to see a digitally re-imagined Meteor 350 as a traditional low-slung cruiser and to be honest it does look very good. For starters, the designer has taken the image of a regular Meteor and slants its front forks adding a few degrees to the rake angle thus adding a few inches to the wheelbase as well.

    Next up, the tail section is reshaped a little with the tail light repositioned lower than usual on the rear fender. The rider’s seat is also lower than the stock model and the pillion seat is now narrower than the original model.
    Grab handles for pillion too have been moved forward and very low. Next, a taller handlebar is added which are usually found in conventional bobbers. The wheelbase is further lengthened by stretching the rear section of the bike.
    In this case, the base Fireball variant of Meteor was chosen which doesn’t offer the windshield and rear backrest as standard and comes with bright colours. The paint scheme is changed as well with gloss black colour replacing the bright red on offer.
    To complement the look further, the designer adds yellow pinstripes to the fuel tank, side panel and rear fender which gives a nice contrast to the overall look of the bike.

    It is to be noted that Royal Enfield is indeed developing a traditional low-slung cruiser codenamed KX650 which will be powered by the 650cc parallel-twin engine as on the Interceptor and Continental GT. The motorcycle has already been spotted testing on a couple of occasions. More

    Top 10 Two Wheeler Exports Oct 2020 – Boxer, Star City, Pulsar, Apache Lead

    In a welcome development for two-wheeler manufacturers, exports have registered double digit growth in October 2020

    A total of 3,73,875 units were exported, which is YoY gain of 25.98%. Exports during the corresponding period last year stood at 2,96,772 units. The numbers reveal that market conditions have improved in most of the key global locations where made in India two-wheelers are exported.
    Bajaj Boxer tops the list
    While the domestic market is dominated by Hero Splendor and Honda Activa, the most exported two-wheeler is Bajaj Boxer. It has retained the top spot for a long time. In October, a total of 1,23,778 units were exported. This is an impressive YoY gain of 40.50%, as compared to 88,096 units exported in October last year.
    Boxer was once available in the domestic market in 100 cc and 150 cc variants, and it had good demand initially. However, the 100 cc variant was later replaced with CT 100. The 150 cc variant was also discontinued. Boxer’s most important export markets are countries in Africa, Latin America and some South East Asian countries.
    At number two is TVS Star City with exports of 52,776 units in October. YoY gain is 74.70%, as compared to 30,209 units exported in October last year. TVS exports its two-wheelers to more than sixty countries across Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Europe.

    At third spot is Bajaj Pulsar with 32,406 units exported in October. YoY gain is 32.52%, as compared to 24,454 units exported in October last year. The pulsar range is popular in domestic market as well and it is the top selling brand in Bajaj’s portfolio.
    At number four is Bajaj CT with 16,284 units exported in October. The motorcycle has registered negative YoY growth of -32.11%, as compared to 23,986 units exported in October last year. Next in the list is Bajaj Discover with 15,916 units exported in October. YoY gain is 10.77%, as compared to 14,369 units exported in October last year.
    Other most exported two wheelers in top ten
    At number six is TVS Apache, which is another popular product in the domestic market. Apache exports in October stood at 13,058 units. Numbers have more than doubled, as compared to 5,991 units exported in October last year.

    Ather 450X Electric Scooter Ahmedabad – 1st Owner Takes Delivery

    As promised, Ather Energy has commenced deliveries of its 450X electric scooter in Ahmedabad

    As may be recalled, the company had started operations in Ahmedabad in October via its dealer partner Kataria Group. This was part of the company’s plan to expand operations across the country. Ather has also expanded its footprint to Mumbai and Pune. Other cities that will be covered soon include Delhi-NCR, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Kochi and Coimbatore. Ather already has presence in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.
    Ather 450X specs
    Ather Energy had started out with its 450 electric scooter, which has now been discontinued. 450X works as its replacement and comes with several new features and updates.
    Powering the scooter is a 2.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack connected to a 6kW PMS motor. With 26 Nm of torque, Ather 450X can effortlessly zip through city streets. The battery is IP 67 rated water resistant and dust proof and comes with 3 year warranty.
    Users can choose from ride modes of Eco, Ride, Sports and Warp. Max range is available with Eco mode at 85 km on a full charge. Ride and Sports mode allow 70 km and 60 km, respectively. Warp mode is built for max performance.

    According to the company, this is true range that users can get in real life driving conditions. In a laboratory environment, Ather 450X range is much higher at 116 km. Many users have reported achieving more than the stated range, which is testament to the claims made by the company.
    Ather Grid
    To make refuelling just as convenient and hassle free as gasoline scooters, Ather is focusing on expanding recharging stations in cities. Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is at a nascent stage in the country, which is a key reason for not buying electric vehicles. An increase in the number of charging stations in a city is expected to take care of range anxiety that people usually have about electric vehicles. It will also motivate people to make the switch to electric.

    In cities where Ather is operation, the company is building an extensive network of charging stations. The locations are determined in such a way that a charging station is never more than 4 km away. These charging stations can be easily located via Ather app or on the dashboard. Ather’s charging stations are equipped with fast DC chargers that can load 1.5 km per minute.
    The grid can recognize individual vehicles and can be accessed remotely via Ather app. Apart from the company’s own products, Ather grid will also support charging of all other two wheelers and four wheelers that use a 5A charger. More

    Honda Working On Brain Wave Reading Tech – Can Avoid Potential Accident

    Honda is developing a new technology where it can take input from the rider’s brain and enhance the safety systems

    While riding a motorcycle one would have wished at least once in life that the two-wheeler could perform the intended actions after reading what’s on the rider’s mind. This would reduce a rider’s effort in stiff riding conditions and make up for a pleasant experience. Sounds too good to be true? Not really!
    Apparently, Honda is developing a brain-wave-detection system that would help future motorcycles know their riders’ thoughts and intentions. Patent images regarding the same have surfaced online which are part of the patent application filed by Honda’s Los Angeles based R&D facility at the US Patent and Trademark Office.

    What is this technology?
    The basic idea behind this technology is to assist the onboard safety system which can ensure that the bike does what the rider wants even when his/her actions may not be accurate. In simple words, this technology would allow a rider to connect to his/her motorcycle telepathically via electrodes attached to one’s helmet that would send signals to a computer which Honda calls BMI or “Brain-Machine Interface“.

    The brain wave signals are then interpreted by BMI and sent to the corresponding part of the bike. The bike is equipped with a suite of electronic rider aids present in most modern premium bikes such as accelerometers, IMU (computing lean, yaw, and pitch and other dynamics of motorcycles), electronic throttle, ABS, traction control and more.

    The only additional functionality will be a sensor measuring steering angle and an actuator to move the steering in case input is not enough from the rider’s side and electronic intervention is required.

    In what ways could it help a rider?
    Interestingly, the images shared shows examples of riders pulling out dangerous stunts like wheelie and stoppie using a rider’s imagination. The system assists the rider to carry out the stunts by taking control over various aspects of the motorcycle. The one problem here though is that even if one knows the theory of pulling out a perfect wheelie or stoppie it would take a lot of experience to do it cleanly in practice.

    More importantly, BMI could act as electronic assistance to less experienced riders and help avoid serious accidents due to lack of experience. Furthermore, as per the text provided by the company with the patent filings, BMI can also adapt to an individual’s skill level and accordingly modulate its assistance depending on the rider’s experience. If Honda does manage to pull this off, it could potentially lead to a new revolution in automotive technology.

    Prospects of this technology reaching future?
    Since it is a patent filing it is safe to say it would take at least a few years for something of this sort to actually materialise and reach production. The cost behind developing such a technology would also be monumental and puts a doubt whether this would be feasible for production models in near future.

    Honda is also working on many other tech for motorcycle riders, that will eventually help in reducing crash / accidents. This includes their prototype from 2017, when the Japanese auto major presented a self-balancing bike that could stand upright without the assistance of a rider. More
