      Honda Sales, Exports Breakup Feb 21 – Activa, CB Shine, Dio, Unicorn, Hornet

      Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India have maintained good sales momentum in February 2021 both where domestic sales as well as exports were concerned. In the past month, the company also expanded its networks. It opened three new BigWing dealerships in Siliguri, Vododara and Thane thus taking total to 5 BigWing Topline showrooms from where the company’s 300cc premium range is retailed and 18 Honda BigWing outlets from where the 300-500cc mid-size premium range is sold.
      Honda Domestic Sales
      Honda has noted a 31.76 percent increase in domestic sales in Feb 2021. Sales which stood at 3,14,783 units in Feb 20 surged to 4,11,605 units in the past month. However, on a MoM basis, sales dipped by 1 percent as compared to 4,16,712 units sold in Jan 21.
      It was the Honda Activa scooter that topped the sales charts in spite of de-growth of 6.09 percent. Sales in Feb 21 stood at 2,09,389 units, up from 2,22,961 units sold in Feb 20. The Honda Activa scooter currently commands a 50.87 percent share in the company lineup.
      The CB Shine is currently a popular buy in the premium commuter segment. It was at No.2 in the list of Honda bikes sold last month with sales growth of 128.18 percent. Currently holding a 28.18 percent share, sales in the past month stood at 1,15,970 units, up from 50,825 units sold in the same month of the previous year.

      The Dio scooter came in third with sales of 28,171 units, up 6.33 percent as against 26,494 units sold in Feb 20. Honda Unicorn 160 as added 22,281 units to total domestic sales in the past month while Dream at No.5 saw its sales increase 405.46 percent to 10,736 units, up from 2,124 units sold in Feb 20.
      Livo and Grazia also saw good numbers with significant percentage increase in Feb 21 over domestic sales in Feb 20. The Hornet 2.0 and H’ness 350 both contributed 3,596 units and 3,268 units to total domestic sales last month.
      X-Blade noted a 4,510 percent increase in demand in local markets with 1,844 units sold, up from just 40 units sold in Feb 20. Aviator is no longer on sale in India while the Unicorn 150 has been replaced by the Unicorn 160 and the Hornet 160R failed to receive any BS6 upgrade.

      Honda exports increased 16.80 percent to 31,088 units in Feb 21 as compared to 26,616 units exported in Feb 20. It was the Honda Navi that found most buyers in export markets with 6,398 units exported, up 85.77 percent as against 3,444 units sold in Feb 20. In fact, the Navi scooter is solely produced for export purposes.
      Dio exports dipped 44.05 percent to 5,695 units last month, down from 10,178 units exported in Feb 20 while CB Shine saw exports surge 78.75 percent to 4,794 units, up from 2,682 units sold in Feb20. Significant percentage increase was also seen in the case of the Dream (77.68 percent) and X-Blade (83.01 percent) while exports of the Livo stood at 2,700 units. The Honda Livo, in its BS6 avatar continues to compete against the TVS Star City Plus BS6 and Hero Passion Pro BS6.
      Exports of the Honda Hornet 160R and Grazia dipped marginally in the past month and Aviator exports also dipped from 680 units exported in Feb 20 to 360 units in Feb 21. The recently launched Honda H’Ness CB 350 added 300 units to company exports. Activa and Unicorn 160 also reported lower exports while the CB Twister noted a 100 percent de-growth with 0 units exported in the past month, down from 1,040 units exported in Feb 20. More

      The Ather riding experience is now more convenient with the latest Atherstack Atom update. This means one can take phone calls and change tracks with Ather 450X control. With this, one can view music and phone calls from the Ather 450X dashboard.
      The revamped Ather app means existing owners can get feature upgrades via OTA. This is the 13th OTA (Over the Air) update to Atherstack Atom. Now one can enjoy Bluetooth based Music & Call feature on Ather 450X. One can pair the scooter’s 7- inch touchscreen dashboard to a smartphone in use.

      When music is playing, album art, song name, and artist name can be viewed on the dash. When stationary, the rider can switch to previous track, play/pause current track or switch to next track. The update is compatible with all popular music streaming services and podcast services.
      One can accept/reject the call on the touchscreen dashboard. A combination of physical switches can be used when riding. Ather Energy is working to introduce a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which will further enhance vehicle performance. Take a look at the short video on the newest update.

      With these additions, the need to pull out one’s phone when riding is limited. The new Ather App proves to be a clean, intuitive interface with a contextual home screen for easy access to all info a rider typically needs. Currently, it’s available on Android in the Google Play Store. In a few weeks it will be released in the Apple App Store for iOS users.

      Fast Charging Points
      Ather Energy will also go about installing Ather Grid, 3-4 fast charging points at key locations across the cities they are present in – with the count set to double by the end of this year. For this, the company seeks partnership with cafes, restaurants, malls, gyms and tech parks. To date, Ather Energy has a presence in over 17 cities with 120+ fast charging points.
      Ather offers the 450 and 450X electric scooters, both of which will be on sale via the new showrooms. The Ather 450X is priced at Rs.1,59,524 while the 450 Plus retails at Rs.1,40,514. More

      Suzuki has taken the wraps off the new 2021 Burgman 400 which gets a bunch of new updates. These new updates could be found in the feature, styling and powertrain departments. Apart from all these revisions, the Maxi scooter now complies with the latest Euro-5 emission norms.
      First launched in 1998, this is the third major upgrade for the Suzuki Maxi scooter, the first two being in 2006 and 2018. Upon its initial launch, Burgman 400 set the tone for the mid-displacement maxi-style scooters across the world and continues to find a substantial market in European markets.
      Maxi Styling with new colour options
      Starting with its styling, the overall design has been carried forward from the previous iteration and continues to look like a jacked-up version of Burgman 125 currently on sale in India. It is touted to be as comfortable and utilitarian as ever featuring a plush saddle with adjustable lumbar support, cut-away footboards.
      It now delivers improved visibility in the dark thanks to the updated lighting setup comprising LED headlights, taillights and running taillights. It is now available in three colour schemes namely- iron grey, matte silver and matte black, all with blue alloy rims.

      There have been plenty of updates made on the engine department. It continues to feature the same 400cc single-cylinder motor but a series of updates has led to improved overall performance.

      Thanks to a new twin-plug cylinder head, the engine now returns better low and mid-range torque. A change in ignition timing has resulted in stable idling, easier engine startup and increased top speed and yet at the same time reducing fuel consumption.
      The updated motor also has a stronger power delivery and improved throttle control due to revised cam profiles and altered injectors from 16-hole to 10-hole. This has also resulted in increased combustion efficiency. The stricter emission standards have also brought a new catalytic converter that should result in improved refinement.

      Updated Features on offer
      As far as its equipment is concerned, the major update has been the new traction control system which enhances riding safety in wet and slippery conditions. Moreover, stopping is a lot easier thanks to an ABS setup which is 36g lighter. The new Burgman 400 is also more practical with under-seat storage of 42 litres and in addition to 6.3 litres in the front glove box. The front compartment also houses a 12V charging socket.
      Prices of the 2021 Burgman 400 will be revealed at the time of its launch and it is expected to go on sale in Europe starting with UK in the next few months. It is extremely unlikely to launch in India anytime soon. Internationally it will rival the likes of other Maxi scooters such as Honda Forza 350 and BMW C400 twins. More

      Suzuki Motorcycle is set to bring in the 2021 Hayabusa into India. Scheduled for official launch sometime in April, a YouTube video draws our attention to the changes it will receive over its older counterpart. It is slated to get an enhanced electronics package, improved braking system, and better suspension while engine capacity remains same with power down by around 7 hp.
      Euro 5 compliant engine
      New Hayabusa gets its power via 1,340cc, inline 4 cylinder, liquid cooled, DOHC engine that makes 190 hp power at 9,700 rpm and 150 Nm torque at 7,000 rpm. Power figures see a reduction by 7 hp as against 197 hp offered on its earlier counterpart while peak torque is also lower than before.
      However, torque delivery is stronger than that seen on the older engine. The motor is mated to a 6 speed gearbox. As has been revealed in the video, this engine is capable of accelerating the 264 kg heavy weight bike to cross the 200 km/h mark in a few seconds and then on to touch 270 km/h and even further to a top speed 280 km/h, thus claiming to be the “quickest Hayabusa ever”.
      Official figures state that the new Hayabusa can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds to hit a top speed of 299 km/h. Take a look at the top speed run in the video below.

      It receives advanced electronics in the form of 10 levels of traction control, 10 levels of anti-wheelie control, 3 levels of engine brake control, anti-lift control and a 6 axis IMU with cornering Anti-Lock Braking System. The Hayabusa also gets 3 power modes, launch control and hill hold control.
      New Design Elements
      The 2021 Hayabusa continues to sport the same shape as its earlier counterpart but receives stronger crease lines and new design elements with revised LED head and tail lamps, LED position lamps, an analogue dashboard and a new TFT display.
      It gets seat height of 800mm and ground clearance at 120mm while braking and suspension are via updated Showa suspension and Brembo Stylema calipers at the front brake. The sports tourer rides on Bridgestone Battlax S22 tyres. It will be offered in 3 new colour schemes of B5L (Glass Sparkle Black/Candy Burnt Gold), BS5M (Mat Sword Silver/Candy Daring Red), B5N (Pearl Brilliant White/Metallic Mat Stellar Blue).
      Teased on the brand’s social media channels for India, the 2021 Suzuki Hayabusa is up for launch in April. It will be brought in via the CKD route for local assembly and will see an increased price as compared to its older model which was priced at Rs.13.75 lakhs, ex-sh. More

      While discounts, benefits and freebies are among the most widely used tools to attract customers, sometimes dealers come up with entirely new ideas. A recent example is that of a Jawa dealer in Surat, who is offering customized Jawa Forty Two motorcycle at no extra cost. The financial year is coming to a close and most businesses including auto dealerships would be looking to boost sales.
      Jawa 42 customization – key details
      One of the primary objectives of this dealer-level customization is to boost sales of spoke rimmed variant of Jawa 42. As may be recalled, 2021 Jawa Forty Two was launched earlier this year in February. Among the key updates introduced is the availability of blacked out alloy wheels and tubeless tyres. While retro-styled motorcycles such as Jawa 42 look elegant in spoke wheels, there’s a growing preference for alloy wheels and tubeless tyres.
      Alloy wheels enhance a motorcycle’s sporty profile and coupled with tubeless tyres, they serve better for practical purposes. For example, if there is a flat, fixing a tubeless tyre is far easier than tube-type tyres.
      Due to these reasons, it is possible that there may no longer be enough demand for spoke rimmed variant of Jawa 42. To clear existing inventory, the dealer is offering customization for spoke wheel Jawa 42 at no extra cost.

      As can be seen in the images posted by the dealer, the customizations have been carried out on Starlight Blue (Matte) variant. It is possible that the dealer may be offering customizations on other colour variants as well.

      For Starlight Blue, most of the changes have been carried out on the fuel tank. It includes blacked out sections on both sides of the fuel tank and addition of tri-coloured lines, similar to the Indian tricolour national flag.
      On the top section of the fuel tank, there are two additional strips in silver colour. They have “42 Classic Legends” badging. These customizations are inspired by 2021 Jawa Forty Two that has a similar design theme. 2021 Jawa 42 offers three new colour options of Matte Red, Matte Black and White.

      This dealer-level customization is limited to cosmetic updates and there are no changes to engine or other hardware. However, if we talk about 2021 Jawa 42, the updated motorcycle does offer slightly more power of 0.8 hp. While engine is the same BS6 compliant 293cc, liquid-cooled unit as earlier, it has been tweaked to deliver 27.3hp of max power and 27Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.
      2021 Jawa 42 is available at Rs 1.84 lakh (ex-showroom). That’s around Rs 12k costlier than the current dual-channel ABS variant that retails at Rs 1.72 lakh. More

      Top 10 Motorcycles 600cc+ In Feb 2021 – Royal Enfield 650 Twins Lead

      Despite low sales, the list saw the return of two Harley Davidson models in the form of Low Rider S and Forty-Eight Special
      The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has been rough on every industry and the global automotive industry is no different. However, the industry has shown an appreciable fightback in the last few months to witness a rise in sales which is close to pre-Covid era.
      While the two-wheeler segment has been returning very strong numbers, the same isn’t the case for premium bikes. The larger performance-oriented motorcycles have not been able to breach the market. This could be mainly due to a shortage of budget caused during the pandemic that has led consumers to shift to more affordable motorcycles.
      RE 650 Twins Top Despite Massive Decline
      In February 2021, Royal Enfield 650 Twins topped the sales charts for the big bikes, however, it witnessed a massive YoY decline of 86 percent. In comparison to February 2020 where 2080 units of 605 Twins were sold, only 284 units of the classic roadsters were retailed last month.
      The decline in sales was due to the fact that RE was in the process of updating the 650 Twins. Recently, both interceptor 650 and Continental GT received a cosmetic update with new colour schemes and a new set of tyres.
      Top selling 600cc+ Motorcycles – Feb 2021
      It was followed by Kawasaki Z900 with a total sales of 61 units, in comparison to 71 units sold during the same month last year with a YoY decline of 14 percent. Its faired cousin Ninja 650 registered a sales volume of 48 units with a YoY growth of 167 percent. Triumph broke into the list with its adventure tourer Tiger 900 by selling 39 units followed by Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX with 32 units and 9 percent YoY degrowth.
      Premium Adventure Bikes
      Another pair of adventure motorcycles- Honda Africa Twin and Kawasaki Versys 650 occupied the sixth and seventh spots with sales of 17 units and 16 units respectively. The Versys 650 was joined by its naked streetfighter sibling Z650 with exactly the same sales volume and a 20 percent decline in YoY sales. The Japanese brand’s power cruiser Vulcan S, carrying the same powertrain as Versys 650 and Z650, came in next with 13 units under its bank.
      The list was rounded off by Harley Davidson Low Rider S (7 units), Kawasaki Versys 1000 (7 units) and Harley Davidson Forty-Eight Special (6 units). The last two models had a YoY growth and degrowth of 600 percent and 63 percent respectively.
      With a fresh surge in the number of cases rising and possible lockdowns in various parts of the country in future possible, we do not expect sales of premium motorcycles to ride anytime soon. However, new attractive launches are expected in the coming months which might excite motorcycling enthusiasts. More

      Honda, off late, has been busy expanding its range of premium motorcycles which are retailed exclusively through the company’s premium chain of dealerships- BigWing. In recent months the number of BigWing showrooms across the country has doubled and gone past fifty in order to expand its footprint.
      Post the launch of H’Ness CB350 towards the end of last year, Honda also launched its scrambler version of CB350 RS and CB500X adventure tourer. Honda had stated that they will further add more models to its BigWing lineup. Today, they have announced the launch of two more motorcycles.
      CB650R – BS6 Update & Price Revision
      In its previous BS4 compliant iteration, the fully faired Honda CBR650R superbike was priced at Rs 7.70 lakh. In its BS6 form, it is priced from Rs 8.88 lakhs, ex-sh. Colour options on offer are Grand Prix Red and Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic. In addition to the CBR650R, Honda has also announced the launch of CB650R Neo Sports Café for a price of Rs 8.67 lakhs, ex-sh. Colour options on offer are Candy Chromosphere Red and Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic.

      As far as features are concerned, it gets an updated digital instrument cluster for better visibility as the fonts have been made bigger and the screen angle adjusted. Underneath the seat, it will offer a USB charging socket as well.

      Hardware setup on the bike witnesses some revisions. The most significant of them being the inclusion of new 41mm USD forks at front sourced from Showa which would help to enhance the middleweight super sports tourer’s ride quality. At rear, the new CBR650R will get Separate Function Big Piston (SFF BP) forks instead of Showa Dual Bending Valve forks.
      2021 CBR650R and CB650R will continue to derive its power from a 648.72cc in-line four-cylinder liquid-cooled motor which pumps out 77 bhp and at 12,000rpm and 57.5 Nm of peak torque available at 8500rpm. This motor will be linked to a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch. Braking will be handled by 310mm double discs at front and 240mm single disc at rear assisted by dual-channel ABS as standard.
      LED Lights
      CBR650R gets Dual LED headlights with new reflectors lights up your path with intense blue-tinted beam. LED taillight is sleek and minimalistic form. While CB650R comes with circular LED headlight equipped with a sharp black bezel, helps rider cut through dark areas with intense blue-tinted beam. The taillight tucked above the steel number plate mount is minimal in style.
      The digital LCD instrument cluster is easier to read. Advanced informatics like Gear Position, Digital Speedometer, Digital Bar Graph Tachometer, Dual Trip Meters, Digital Fuel Level Gauge & Fuel Consumption Gauge, Digital Clock, Water Temp Gauge, Gear position, Shift UP Indicator keep the rider informed on the go.

      Royal Enfield is currently planning to launch the new-gen Classic 350 which is expected to launch in the coming few weeks
      It is already known that Royal Enfield has been developing multiple models in the 650cc platform. While one is a traditional cruiser that may or may not wear the branding of Meteor, the other one which seems to be a retro-styled classic bike is speculated to carry the nametag of Classic.
      While there is no confirmation regarding this from the Chennai-based bikemaker, we do hope a larger and more powerful Classic to hit roads soon especially after Classic 500 being discontinued. We can, however, imagine how the motorcycle would look if and when it gets made.
      A digitally rendered design has been created by IAB in-house design artist Shoeb R. Kalania which has been based on the expected lines of the upcoming new generation Classic 350. As evident, there are no major updates in its overall styling as it retains major design elements from the current Classic 350. However, there are subtle yet noticeable differences in this rendering that distinguishes itself from the current 350cc model.
      Overall Styling
      For starters, it gets a different single-piece grab rail for the pillion which is bolted to the rear fender than the optional pillion seat as in the current Classic 350. The seats are themselves different from the present modern retro bike.

      It also receives new taillights and turn indicators which are sleeker than before. Being powered by a 650ccc parallel-twin engine, it will also feature twin exhaust pipes- one on each side. Also, the front suspension gets an upside-down USD fork in this rendering.
      Another small addition would include a Tripper Navigation pod in the instrument cluster. Other than this, every design element has been kept intact and in line with its upcoming new 350cc sibling. This includes a circular headlamp with chrome bezels around, broad rear fenders, chrome-plated exhaust, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank and circular rearview mirrors.
      Mechanical Specs
      It will borrow its underpinnings from the 650cc Twins- Interceptor and Continental GT. Not only the platform but also the 648cc parallel-twin motor will also be carried over from the 650cc twins. This unit is capable of producing 47 bhp and 52 Nm of peak torque and will be paired to a six-speed gearbox with a slip and assist clutch. More details on the upcoming 650cc motorcycles are expected to be revealed by Royal Enfield in the months to come.
      New-Gen Classic 350
      Meanwhile, Royal Enfield’s next big launch will be the new-gen Classic 350 which will be based on a new J platform and will be powered by a new 349cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine. This motor generates 20.2 bhp and 27 Nm of peak torque and is mated to a new 5-speed gearbox. It is expected to be hitting showrooms in the next few weeks.
