    Hero Harley 500cc Motorcycles Launch Planned – To Rival Royal Enfield

    When Hero-Harley partnership for announced last year, there were quite a few questions and ambiguities about its scope and objectives. Things are starting to get clearer now, as Hero MotoCorp is said to be planning twin model bikes for middleweight segment. This arrangement would be something similar to BMW-TVS venture that’s led to the production of bikes like Apache RR 310 and BMW G 310 R.
    As part of Hero-Harley partnership, Hero is currently managing distribution, sales and service for Harley Davidson. As per the agreement, Hero will be developing mid-capacity bikes for Harley as well.
    Rebadged versions of these will be developed under the Hero brand also. These are expected to be positioned as relatively affordable options, as compared to Harley bikes of same capacity. The twin models are expected to share much of their hardware such as engine, chassis, etc.
    Challenger to Royal Enfield
    Globally, the middleweight motorcycle segment comprises products with engine capacity of 500cc to 900cc. In the Indian market, the preferences are skewed heavily in favour of 350cc-400cc motorcycles.

    This segment is dominated by Royal Enfield, which commands around 90% market share. This is where Hero will be positioning its middleweight motorcycles. According to the company’s CFO, Niranjan Gupta, the development of these motorcycles is already underway. However, there’s no exact timeline about when these bikes will be unveiled.
    With Harley’s support, Hero could get a good start in the middleweight motorcycle segment. It can also seek encouragement from the fact that Honda CB350 has been registering consistent sales month after month. New products in this space may not influence hard-core Royal Enfield fans. However, folks with a neutral outlook can definitely think about trying something new.
    Portfolio expansion
    For years, Hero has remained the undisputed leader of commuter motorcycles. However, its dream of creating a bestseller in premium motorcycle segment is yet to be achieved. A number of attempts were made in the past such as 225cc Karizma ZMR. This had to be withdrawn in 2019 due to lack of desired sales numbers.
    Hero’s current portfolio maxes out at 200cc with products like Xpulse 200, Xpulse 200T and Xtreme 200S. These have been generating decent sales numbers, but there’s need to expand portfolio. The profit margin is much higher with premium motorcycles. For example, the profit margin on Pulsar is around double that of Hero’s bestseller Splendor.
    It will be interesting to see how the market responds to middleweight Hero motorcycles. As of now, the brand is synonymous with affordable commuter motorcycles. Breaking into the cult-like following of Royal Enfield has been a challenge for all manufacturers. It will continue to be so for Hero as well.

    Gogoro Viva Electric Scooter Patent Filed – To Be Launched Under Hero ?

    As mentioned in our previous report, Hero MotoCorp has been planning to launch its own dedicated lineup of EVs and recently announced a major partnership with Taiwanese EV brand Gogoro. Apparently, the Indian bikemaker will seek the expertise of Gogoro in battery swapping technology and could also launch a couple of its rebadged models in India.
    In the latest development, it has come to light that Gogoro has filed patents for its Viva electric scooter in India. These trademarks are in the form of both its design as well as its name. This e-scooter could be launched and marketed in India under Hero MotoCorp’s dealerships under the Indian company’s dedicated brand of electric two-wheelers.
    Gogoro Electric Scooter
    The trademark application dates back a few months, hence it can be concluded that plans of launching an EV have been on Hero’s mind for a long time now. Due to a family pact with Hero Electric, Hero MotoCorp would have to launch its electric two-wheelers under a separate brand name so as not to create confusion. The new brand name will be revealed ahead of its first electric two-wheeler launch.
    Powertrain Specs
    Coming back to Gogoro Viva, it looks like a cute little scooter that weighs a meagre 80 kilos including the battery pack and motor. It is offered in two variants- basic and keyless and is powered by a motor that produces 3kW (4 bhp) of power and 115 Nm of peak torque.

    When driven at a consistent speed of 30kmph it can deliver a range of 85km on a single charge. The India-spec model is expected to be offered with the same specifications while its launch is slated to take place sometime in 2022.
    Features on offers
    Notable features on offer include a quirky design, Synchronized Braking System (SBS), smart sensors, all-LED lighting, iQ System Smart Keycard, USB charging port, fixed step bar and a digital instrument console with an LCD negative display with backlight. The top-spec trim gets additional smartphone connectivity and a keyless go feature. It gets a 21.6-litre under-seat storage capacity.
    Other Mechanical details
    Hardware configurations of the electric scooter comprise telescopic forks at front and dual rear shocks at rear. The scooter rides on 10-inch alloy wheels which are shod by 90/90-section rubber at front and 100/90-section tyre at the rear.
    Stopping duties are carried out by 180mm disc brakes at both front and rear ends. In terms of dimensions, Viva measures 1,680mm in length, 630mm in width and 1,050mm in height while it offers a wheelbase of 1,164mm. The saddle is pegged at a very accessible height of 740mm. More

    Bajaj Sales, Exports Breakup March 2021 – Pulsar, Platina, CT, Avenger, Dominar, Chetak

    Bajaj Auto Limited ended the past financial year on a positive note. Domestic sales and exports experienced a significant increase over sales in Feb 21 despite the ongoing pandemic situation in the country which has entered the second phase.
    Domestic Sales Breakup
    In domestic markets, the company sold a total of 1,74,334 units, a notable increase over 93,692 units sold in Feb 21 while a total of 1,42,971 units were exported, up from 1,08,383 units exported in Feb 21. Topping the domestic sales charts was the Bajaj Pulsar. Sales stood at 85,639 units in March 21, an increase of 66.44 percent over 51,454 units sold in Feb 21.
    At No.2 was the Platina of which domestic sales increased 224.61 percent MoM. Sales which had stood at 21,264 units in Feb 21 increased to 69,025 units in March 21. Even as demand for the Bajaj CT dipped 14.28 percent that of the Avenger and Dominar increased substantially in local markets while demand for the Bajaj Chetak electric remained flat.
    Engine Segment wise breakup
    When assessing engine wise breakup of Bajaj bikes, it may be seen from the attached table that it was the 75-110cc and 111-125 cc segments that noted the most demand. The bikes in the 126 to 200 cc segments also fared well while the Bajaj Dominar 400 is the most powerful bike in that segment noting sales of 936 units in March 21, up 234.29 percent as compared to 280 units sold in Feb 21.

    Bajaj Exports on the other hand increased 31.91 percent MoM. Exports which had stood at 1,08,383 units in Feb 21 increased to 1,42,971 units in March 21. Except for the Bajaj CT, every other model noted growth with demand for the Avenger increasing the maximum.

    Boxer and Pulsar exports topped the list with 83,788 units and 26,256 units respectively, up from 65,116 units and 15,717 units exported in Feb 21. CT exports dipped 20.90 percent to 14,216 units while Discover and Dominar exports increased 108.81 percent and 224.48 percent respectively.
    Bajaj offerings in the 75-110cc segments found most demand in export markets with the Avenger 220 and Pulsar 200 and 250 also seeing maximum demand. Bajaj Pulsar 150cc saw exports rise 86.85 percent to 13,588 units in March 21, up from 7,272 units exported in Feb 21.
    The Pulsar 150 comprises three variants that include the regular 150, 150 Twin Disc and 150 Neon each of which are offered in seven different paint schemes depending on variants chosen. The Pulsar 220F also saw high demand in global markets with exports of 1,544 units, up 896 units exported in Feb 21. This was an increase of 72.32 percent MoM. More

    Upcoming Ather Electric Scooter Patent Leaks – More Range Than 450X?

    Ather Energy has been among the most prominent name in recent times in the Indian automotive market when it comes to electric mobility in the two-wheeler segment. The company rolled out its first electric two-wheeler in the form Ather 450 e-scooter back in 2018 which was met with more than favourable responses.
    This was followed up by two more premium and more powerful successors- 450X and 450 Plus. The Bangalore-based startup about six months ago shifted its manufacturing base from Bangalore to Hosur in Tamil Nadu in order to increase its annual production capacity. This is in line with the company’s idea of expansion with more new products.
    Expected Design
    Ather has filed design patents for a new electric scooter in India. The patent image shows a scooter that appears to be larger than the existing 450X and the design is in line with contemporary Maxi-style scooters.
    Signature Maxi scooter styling elements in the patent include a tall windscreen upfront and a front-heavy fairing. It gets a flat single-piece seat along with a wide front apron featuring a sleek LED headlamp.
    Upcoming Ather Electric Scooter patents
    Contrary to the design of Maxi scooters, this one gets an absolutely flat floorboard and minimalist rear section. Other styling highlights include a short front fender, black alloy wheels, chiselled side body panels and a disc brake at front. Apart from the exterior design, Ather has also patented the swingarm as well as the chassis of a new electric scooter.
    Obviously, this is just a patent and the final production-spec model could end up looking very different from this one. If this e-scooter does come into existence, then it is likely to be offered as a premium product with more features, improved range and more power.
    Ather 450X
    Ather Energy’s current e-scooter 450X has been very well received across the Indian market. It is offered in two variants- Plus and Pro with the former being priced at Rs. 1,41,621 and the latter being pegged at a price of Rs. 1,60,633 (both prices are ex-showroom). It comes in three colour options- grey, green and white. 450X comes with a bagful of features including a Bluetooth-enabled (4.2) touchscreen instrument cluster, all LED lighting, integrated 4G LTE SIM connectivity and music & call controls among others.
    As far as performance goes, the powertrain features a 2.9kWh battery pack which feeds energy to a 3.3kW electric motor rated to produce an output of 8.04 bhp and 26 Nm of torque. It can sprint 0-40 kmph in 3.3 seconds and claims a range of 85km on a single charge. Hardware configurations comprise telescopic forks at front and a rear mono-shock at rear.     Honda Sales, Exports Breakup March 2021 – Activa, Shine, Unicorn, Dio, CB350

    Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) revealed their sales figures for March 2021. The company has posted double digit growth of 60.67 percent in the past month, to 3,95,029 units, up 1,4,171 units as against 2,45,858 units sold in domestic markets in March 2020. However, it must be considered that March 2020 saw the announcement of a nationwide lockdown while it was also the month of the transition to BS6 emission standards.
    As always, it was the Honda Activa scooter that was the best-selling model in the company’s domestic lineup. Activa sales stood at 1,99,208 units in March 21, up 73.59 percent as against 1,14,757 units sold in March 20.
    The Honda Activa commands as much as a 50.43 percent share and apart from being the best seller in the company lineup for March 21, was also the best-seller among the scooters in India in the same month closely followed by the TVS Jupiter, Suzuki Access 125, Hero Pleasure+ and TVS Ntorq 125.
    Honda CB Shine was the best-selling motorcycle in March 21 with sales of 1,17,943 units up from 86,633 units sold in the same month of the previous year. This related to a 36.14 percent growth with the CB Shine holding a 29.86 percent share. Honda Unicorn sales increased 60.62 percent to 23,235 units.

    Honda Dio Scooter Sales Dip
    Sales of the Honda Dio scooter suffered a de-growth of 23.20 percent with 22,677 units sold in domestic markets in March 21, down from 29,528 units sold in March 20. Honda Dream and Livo both noted a significant increase in sales in March 21 to 8,921 units and 8,305 units up from just 5 units and 15 units sold in March 20 respectively.
    Lower down the order in domestic sales were the newer entrants Grazia, H’ness CB350, Hornet 2.0 and XBlade along with the CB500 and CBR 650F. The Aviator, Unicorn 150 and Hornet 160R have been discontinued from Honda’s lineup altogether.

    Honda exports for March 21 suffered a de-growth of 5.49 percent with 18,479 units exported as against 19,553 units exported in March 20. It was the Honda Dio scooter which was a best seller in terms of exports though numbers dipped 34.22 percent to 4,827 units, down from 7,338 units exported in March 20.

    The CB Shine was at No.2 with growth of 60.35 percent to 3,425 units exported in March 20 while the Navi scooter continued to draw the attention of buyers in global markets with 3,353 units exported in March 21 up 39.24 percent over 2,408 units exported in March 20. It may be recalled that the Navi scooter is produced in India exclusively for global markets
    While Honda Grazia and Dream exports dipped 13.75 percent and 32.74 percent respectively, the Honda XBlade noted a two fold increase in exports, up 90.37 percent to 1,028 units in March 21, a steep increase over 540 units exported in March 20. Honda XBlade was updated to BS6 norms in July 2020 along with which it received new styling that makes it more appealing to a younger segment of buyers.
    Exports of Hornet 160R, Unicorn 150 and Activa suffered a de-growth in March 21. Honda conducts export operations of its two wheelers to 35 global markets among which are Europe, Central and Latin America, Middle East, South East Asia, Japan and SAARC nations.     Simple Energy Electric Scooter Launch In 3 Months – Price Rs 1.1 L Expected

    Bangalore-based Simple Energy announced the launch of its first e-scooter. The event is scheduled for August 15, 2021. Hitherto, code-named Mark2, the long range electric scooter goes up against a competitive range of e-scooters from established names.
    Having readied the Mark1 prototype last year, the production variant builds from there. Mark 2 features a 4.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The startup claims a range of 240 kms in eco mode. Top speed is pegged at 100kmph. The electric scooter would go from 0-50 kmph in 3.6 seconds.
    Expected price between Rs 1.1L – Rs 1.2L
    A mid-drive motor is in use. In keeping with current trends, the company says it’s a futuristic design product. A removable battery helps. Smart features include a touchscreen panel, on-board navigation, and Bluetooth, among other inputs.
    Launch price is stated to be in the range of Rs 1,10,000 to Rs 1,20,000. With a range of electric scooters priced in this range, it’s easy to see why it may not be a choice for most. Costs are prohibitive in a largely price competitive scooter market. This makes electric scooter purchases far fewer in number.
    Simple Energy Electric Scooter
    A lot of what you’re hearing is available in some form or the other in modern day electric scooters. Each of which is paving the way for a future where electric vehicles in India will be a norm, and not the exception.
    Launch in Bangalore first
    As predictable, the scooter will at first be launched in Bangalore. The company’s R&D centre is located here, and its first factory too is being set up in the city. This will pit Mark2 against what is a fairly mature electric market with plenty of competition as compared to most other Indian cities. Simple Energy is also looking to deploy charging stations in Bangalore prior to launch.
    Following Bangalore, the company will set up sales in Chennai and Hyderabad. Expansion plans for further phases hasn’t yet been disclosed. The startup looks forward to raising Series A funding of $15 mn in the Q3 of this year. Once launched, it will rival the likes of Bajaj Cheta, TVS iQube, Ather 450x, etc.

    Two Wheeler Exports March 2021 – Pulsar, Apache, KTM, Classic 350

    A total of 3,56,172 units were exported in March 2021, which is YoY gain of 63.14%. Exports during the same period last year stood at 2,18,328 units. Among the top 10, nine two wheelers have positive YoY growth. In the top 20, only two have negative YoY growth.
    In the top ten, Bajaj and TVS dominate with four products each. Yamaha and Hero MotoCorp have one product each. TVS Ntorq is the only scooter to be featured in the top ten exports list in March.
    Bajaj Boxer leads
    Most exported two wheeler continues to be Bajaj Boxer with exports 83,788 units in March 2021. YoY growth is at 28.67%, as compared to 65,116 units exported in March last year. Boxer share in exports is at 23.52%.
    At number two is TVS Star City, which has made impressive YoY gain of 153.47%. Exports are up from 27,107 units in March last year to 68,707 units in March 2021. Share in exports is at 19.29%. Pulsar is third with exports of 26,256 units in March 2021. YoY growth is 67.05%, as compared to 15,717 units exported in March last year. Share in exports is at 7.37%.

    At number four is TVS Apache with exports of 16,697 units in March 2021. YoY export growth has close to tripled, as compared to 5,695 units exported in March last year. Percentage share in exports is at 4.69%.
    Bajaj CT is at fifth spot with exports of 14,216 units in March 2021. YoY growth is negative at -20.90%, as compared to 17,972 units exported in March last year. CT is the only two wheeler in the top ten to register negative growth. Its share in exports is at 3.99%.
    Bajaj Discover is next with exports of 13,280 units in March 2021. YoY exports have more than doubled, as compared to 6,360 units exported in March last year. Percentage share in exports is at 3.73%.

    TVS Ntorq registers strong growth
    Placed at tenth spot, TVS Ntorq has highest YoY growth in percentage terms. From 1,528 units in March last year, exports have zoomed to 6,184 units in March 2021. That’s 304.71% increase in exports. Ntorq share in exports is at 1.74%. Yamaha FZ is at seventh place with exports of 13,066 units in March 2021. YoY growth is at 74.03%, as compared to 7,508 units exported in March last year. FZ share in exports is at 3.67%.
    Hero HF Deluxe is at eighth place with exports of 9,091 units in March 2021. Growth has more than tripled, as compared to 2,740 units exported in March last year. Share in exports is at 2.55%. At number nine is TVS Sport with exports of 8,400 units in March 2021. YoY growth is an impressive 271.85%, as compared to 2,259 units exported in March last year. Share in exports is at 2.36%. More

    2022 Yamaha R7 First Photos Leak Ahead Of Global Debut

    Upon its launch, Yamaha YZF R7 will compete against the likes of Kawasaki Ninja 650 and Aprilia RS660
    The upcoming influx of middleweight superbikes will also feature the hotly anticipated Yamaha R7 which has been teased on the Japanese bikemaker’s official YouTube channel. Not only has the faired monster been teased in a marketing video, but images of a photoshoot featuring the upcoming R7 have also been leaked on the internet ahead of its global debut.
    The middleweight faired sports bike will officially show its face on 18 May 2021 as indicated by the video teaser. The new R7 will serve as a replacement for the outgoing YZF R6 which was discontinued last year since it did not comply with stricter emission standards. Images of the upcoming R7 have been leaked online on social media.

    Styling Highlights
    Apart from the date of its global debut, the teaser also reveals certain highlights of the bike’s design. The overall styling of the new R7 follows the design philosophy which has been prevalent in the R range of supersport motorcycles from the Japanese brand for ages now.
    The images show a prototype in Yamaha’s signature blue paint scheme which lends the motorcycle a sporty appeal. Upfront, R7 looks starkly different from its predecessor.

    While R6 came with R1-derived twin-pod LED headlamps, R7 will flaunt a completely redesigned fascia that features a single-pod LED headlight flanked by twin LED DRLs on both sides. The centre space in the front fairing occupied by the headlamp also flaunts an air scoop which gives it a twin-beam design at the front. Also, it appears to get a taller and wider windscreen than R6.

    Expected Specs
    While the exact specifications are yet to be revealed, we expect R7 to be based on the MT-07 platform. Hence, it is likely to be powered by a 689cc, parallel-twin motor with a 270-degree crank which spits out 72.4 bhp at 8,750rpm and a peak torque of 67 Nm at 6,500rpm.
