New Honda Vario 160cc Maxi Scooter Patented In India – Aerox Rival

Honda has equipped Vario 160 maxi-scooter with a sharp and futuristic suit landing it straight into Aerox 155’s alleyNew Honda Vario 160The Maxi-scooter trend is slowly catching on in India. They’re not entirely new to Indians as we were familiar with the Kinetic Blaze with a 165 cc engine. It had size to its advantage along with comfort. But, the Indian motorcycle market wasn’t mature enough to embrace a maxi-scooter.Suzuki India was the first to revive maxi-scooters in India with the launch of Burgman Street 125. It soon gained popularity for its relaxed ergonomics and its massive street presence. Looking at its success, Suzuki is also considering an electric Burgman Street as seen by the test mules. After Burgman Street 125, Aprilia stepped in with their SXR 160 maxi-scooter. It brought a touch of Italian flair with it. After that, Yamaha planned for the launch of NMax 155 maxi-scooter in India. But Yamaha wanted to test the market further, so they launched the Aerox 155 sports scooter based on the R15 engine.Honda Vario 160cc PatentedEven though Honda is late to the maxi-scooter party, it wants to make a strong appearance. Enters Vario 160. Honda recently filed a design patent for Vario 160 in India which has also been approved. For starters, Honda Vario comes in both 125 cc and 160 cc variants in Southeast Asian markets. For India, Honda has patented the bigger 160 cc model taking the fight directly to Aerox 155 and Aprilia SXR 160.Honda Vario 160 Patented in IndiaVario range of maxi-scooters have been on sale in Southeast Asian countries for a very long time. In fact, the Vario patented for India, is the 7th generation of the scooter and has been in production since 2006. This 7th gen model is also the sharpest looking of its predecessors. It gets a futuristic and edgy design language that is matched with its overall personality. It is powered by a 160 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor that churns out around 15.3 PS and 13.8 Nm. It comes very close to Aerox 155’s figures at 15 PS and 13.9 Nm. It’s neck-n-neck to be honest. Other highlights of Vario 160 are telescopic forks at front and a mono-shock unit at the rear. It also gets single disc brakes at both ends and we can expect either dual-channel ABS or Honda’s CBS. It gets 14” wheels wrapped with 100/80 rubber at front and 120/70 rubber at the back.Other features include LED headlights, LED DRLs, LED tail-lights and LED turn indicators. It also gets a fully digital instrument cluster and also Honda’s smart key along with a USB charging port.New Honda Vario 160ccLaunch & CompetitionBack then, people associated scooters as a measly product meant for women to ease their daily commutes. A scooter that had a 150+ cc engine meant for long hauls was scoffed upon. With the Indian motorcycle market maturing enough for maxi-scooters, Honda Vario 160 makes absolute sense and it takes on the Aerox 155.Even though both the scooters boast similar performance figures, Honda pulls a trump card on Aerox 155 as it is 11 kg lighter than Aerox 155. But going with Honda’s spree of filing patents, most of them have never seen the light of day. Even though Honda hasn’t mentioned a launch timeline for Vario 160, we wait to see if it launches at all. More

Electric Scooter Sales May 2022 – Okinawa No 1, Ola No 2, Ampere, Ather, Hero Electric

Registrations of electric two-wheelers fell nearly 27 percent in May, compared to AprilOla slips to No 2 in May 2022Rising fuel prices and increased cost of petrol powered two wheelers turned buyer’s attention towards electric scooters in India. These e-scooters not only allow buyers to save on fuel costs but also relate to lower cost of maintenance and come in with several State and Central Government subsidies.Sales of electric scooters took off at a grand start. Sales escalated to percentage increases unseen by petrol powered scooter OEMs, causing many such manufacturers to venture into the electric arena. While things went well for a few months, they declined in May 2022.One of the main reasons for the decline of sales is the huge shortage of semiconductor chips. Another reason could also be because of recent electric scooter fire incidents. Numerous electric scooters have been involved in fire hazards across India in the past month causing buyers to be more cautious in their purchases. Govt also took notice, and brought electric two wheeler makers such as Okinawa, Ola, Pure EV and Boom Motors under some surveillance.Ola, Hero Electric, Okinawa Post Sales De-GrowthOla, Hero Electric and Okinawa, the leaders in the e-scooter segment, have noted a substantial decrease in sales in May 2022. Ola has slipped to No 2, after taking the No 1 spot in April 2022. Ola Electric still dominates the segment even as sales dipped 31.66 percent MoM to 8,681 units in May 2022, down from 12,702 units sold in April 2022. This was a volume de-growth of 4,021 units.Electric Scooter Sales May 2022. Source – VAHANOkinawa sales also dipped as much as 19.28 percent to 8,888 units in the past month, down 2,123 units over 11,011 units sold in April 2022. Hero Electric has posted the maximum MoM de-growth of 58.36 percent to 2,739 units in May 2022, down from 6,578 units sold in April 2022. Hero Electric seems to have been affected the most due to parts shortage. Just two months ago, they were the No 1 electric scooter brand in India. Hero Electric aims to bounce back to No 1 soon.Ampere also posted a MoM decline by 15.46 percent to 5,529 units in May 2022, down from 6,540 units sold in April 2022 leading to volume de-growth of 1,011 units. Ather Energy, on the other hand, recorded its highest monthly sales to date. The company has seen sales of its e-scooters increase 26.45 percent to 3,098 units in the past month, up from 2,450 units sold in April 2022. The company sells the Ather 450X and 450 Plus in the market. At the end of March 2022 a unit of Ola S1 Pro caught fire in Pune and the company issued a recall of 1,441 electric scooters to fix the issue. This draws attention to added research into battery chemistries, and management systems along with cell constructions to avoid such instances in the future. The Government of India is conducting further investigations into these electric fires and is set to announce a new policy to ensure better quality of batteries and Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways, has also confirmed that the government will list out strict rules for EV quality. 2022 FB Mondial 125cc Motorcycle Debuts – KTM 125 Duke Rival

At 135 kg, Piega 125 by FB Mondial promises to be considerably lighter than its main competitor, KTM 125 Duke2022 FB Mondial Piega 125ccFB Mondial is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer that used to be on sale in India in partnership with Kinetic Motors. Due to poor sales, they soon closed their shops. But FB Mondial is quite popular in its home country producing a wide variety of motorcycles. The company is making headlines again in 2022 with the launch of Piega 125 motorcycle. FB Mondial has pitted it against KTM 125 Duke and undercuts it significantly in terms of pricing. Before you ask, no, it is only available in European markets and won’t be sold in India.2022 FB Mondial 125cc vs KTM 125 DukePiega 125’s main draw is its stunning looks. The motorcycle was designed by Rodolfo Frascoli who also designed the new 2022 Suzuki Katana. It is very evident too as Piega 125 seems to draw a lot of inspiration from Katana. The headlight cowl lends it a perspective of a predator about to pounce on its prey. USD forks finished in gold and muscular tank shrouds further accentuate the predator appeal. Headlight duties are taken care of by twin projector units stacked on top of each other. They get LEDs inside them. The tank shrouds boast some aero trickery that adds some downforce for a better front-end feel.2022 FB Mondial Piega 125ccMost intriguing part of Piega 125’s design is the tail section which gets tail-lights, number plate and indicators mounted on the tyre hugger. This gives a very aesthetic and minimal appeal to the rear of the motorcycle. It gets a wide street-inspired handlebar, split seats, an underbelly exhaust and a sophisticated-looking swingarm.2022 FB Mondial 125cc also gets single discs at both ends and gets single-channel ABS as standard. The motorcycle also gets a TFT colour display for instrumentation. All in all, the design of Piega 125 comes off as futuristic and sleek.Powertrain & PriceIt is powered by a 124 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that develops 14.8 bhp and 10.5 Nm. In comparison, KTM 125 Duke makes 14.5 bhp and 12 Nm from its 125cc engine. Duke seems to get the torque benefit over Piega. But Piega strikes back with its 139 kg kerb weight which is lower than Duke’s 159 kg.2022 FB Mondial Piega 125ccFB Mondial has priced the Piega 125 at EUR 4,400 (Rs. 3.66 lakh approx) while KTM has priced 125 Duke at EUR 5,450 (Rs. 4.54 lakh approx). Piega 125 is not only lighter and slightly more powerful than 125 Duke, but it is also significantly cheaper.FB Mondial is not expected to bring its Piega 125 to Indian shores as it will be almost twice its European price. As KTM 125 Duke is manufactured in India, it is priced at Rs. 1.70 lakh which is less than half the price of Piega 125’s European price. More

Upcoming Bajaj Triumph Scrambler Render – Royal Enfield 350cc Rival

The single-cylinder Bajaj Triumph Scrambler will be pitted head on against Royal Enfield’s new family of 350 cc motorcyclesUpcoming Bajaj Triumph Scrambler MotorcycleAfter announcing a partnership to develop medium displacement premium motorcycles, Bajaj and Triumph have been working under the radar with hardly any updates surfacing in the recent times barring a recent spotting of a prototype abroad. Given the timeline of the partnership announcement, we reckon that the first product should be pretty close to being ready for its world premiere.Bajaj Triumph Scrambler RenderingThe modular medium displacement platform to be born out of this Indo-English alliance could adopt multiple body styles. We think a retro-classic scrambler and a low-riding cruiser are two of the top possibilities. Our design specialist Pratyush Rout has envisioned the former, taking cues from Triumph’s iconic Bonneville family.Earlier this year, a prototype of what is reported to be the Bajaj-Triumph Scrambler was spotted testing along with a sobered up roadster variant. The test mules appeared to donning unfinished body components but the design direction was apparent. The Scrambler variant was equipped with 19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear unit, serrated foot pegs and hand guards. While it is obvious that the new Bajaj-Triumph Scrambler and its derivatives will be equipped with a single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, the displacement is still kept under wraps. Given that the partnership is going after Royal Enfield’s immensely popular family of 350cc motorcycles, we expect the displacement to be in the same ballpark albeit with considerably more power and torque.Upcoming Bajaj Triumph Scrambler MotorcycleMarket PositioningIf the Trident and Tiger 660 is anything to go by, Triumph is likely to position the upcoming single-cylinder offering in the premium end of the medium-displacement segment with no skimping on equipment. The prototypes supported this claim by sporting USD front forks, front and rear disc brakes with ABS, TFT instrument cluster, LED headlight and so on.At the time of initial announcement, Bajaj-Triumph revealed that the new range of jointly developed products will have a staring price of under Rs 2 lakhs. With pandemic induced supply chain challenges, it would be a difficult task to stick to this pricing commitment but if at all any OEM can pull off such an attractive pricing, it is Bajaj.Bajaj Triumph Motorcycle LaunchIt is no secret that with its upcoming family of medium displacement single-cylinder premium motorcycles, Bajaj and Triumph aim to put an end to Royal Enfield’s near-monopoly in the segment. Its been over 50 years since Triumph last made a single-cylinder motorcycle but given this segment is growing at a brisk pace globally, it can’t afford not to participate. Bajaj’s experience in manufacturing premium single-cylinder KTMs for global market and a competitive cost structure makes it a sound business model.Bajaj Triumph Motorcycle Spied. Image – MotobobThe first set of Bajaj-Triumph motorcycles are expected to be ready towards the end of this year. They will be made in India for global consumption. We hope to see more info and spy shots trickling online in the coming months. Launch is likely to take place in 2023. More
