    350cc Motorcycle Sales May 2022 – Classic, Meteor, Bullet, CB350, Jawa Yezdi

    350cc segment motorcycle domestic sales and exports reported at YoY and MoM growth in May 2022Image – Throttle98YoY 350cc segment motorcycles sales more than doubled in May 2022. A year earlier, market situation was largely volatile owing to constraints in place to curb the spread of Covid-19. In dealing with the epidemic, state governments had encouraged phased lockdowns. This included restraints on production and sales.At the time, total sales of 350cc segment motorcycles were reported at 19,711 units (wholesales). In addition, Jawa Yezdi sales were reported at 650 units (retail sales). In May 2022, these numbers were up at a total of 52,203 units. MoM sales is up marginally from 51,827 units. Volume gain stood at 376 units. And Jawa Yezdi retail sales were up at 3,548 units. MoM sales fell 3.56 percent, down from 3,679 units. Bike wise sales breakup for the latter isn’t available.350cc Motorcycle Sales May 2022Royal Enfield Classic 350 sales dominated segment sales at just under 30k units. It accounts for over 50 percent of segment sales. YoY sales are up from 9,239 units. Volume gain stood at 20,720 units. MoM sales fell from 32,575 units. Volume decline is reported at 2,616 units. Meteor sales are up at 8,209 units from 3,375 units. Volume gain is reported at a little under 5k units. MoM sales are up from 4,617 units.Bullet 350 sales stood at roughly 7k units, up from 4,557 units. MoM sales fell from 7,513 units. Electra 350 sales are up at 37,69 units from 2,112 units. MoM sales fell from 3,918 units. Honda CB 350 sales are up at 3,308 units from 428 units. For the longest time, Royal Enfield alone defined and dominated the segment. More recently, Jawa entered space. And Honda now has a product in the limited mix. And sales have been promising with the bike slowly and steadily improving on sales volume.350cc segment exports showed YoY and MoM improvement. Total exports are reported at 6,440 units in May 2022, up from 3,823 units. Volume diff stood at 2,617 units. MoM exports are up from 5,163 units at 25 percent growth.RE Classic Enfield exports topped the chart at 2,779 units, up from 564 units. MoM exports are up from 1,797 units at volume gain of 982 units. Meteor 350 exports fell to 2,161 units, down from 2,887 units. MoM exports are up from 1,138 units. Honda CB 350 exports are up at 1.5k units from 372 units. MoM exports fell from 2,221 units to a volume loss of 721 units.350cc Motorcycle Exports May 2022Royal Enfield sales stagnantDespite new entrants in the 350cc segment over time, total segment sales volume hasn’t been larger than life. This is primarily because Royal Enfield sales have remained stagnant in recent years, and in certain comparisons shows a noticeable decline. For reference, Royal Enfield sales in May 2019 was 62,371 units, and 74,607 units in May 2018.In comparison, total Royal Enfield sales in May 2022 stood at 63,643 units. Of this domestic sales accounted for 53,525 units, and exports are reported at 10,118 units. So, while Royal Enfield has introduced new bikes in the segment in recent times, and at regular intervals, overall sales hasn’t improved.     Top 10 Scooters May 2022 – Activa, Jupiter, Ntorq, Dio, Ola Electric

Every scooter on the best-selling list saw a significant growth in sales but it should be mentioned that assessing YoY sales in relation to the month of May 2021 is not a correct yardstick. That was the month that saw the second wave of pandemic in the country and hence sales were at an all-time low.Total sales of best-selling 10 scooters stood at 3,51,474 units, a 673.29 percent growth over 45,452 units sold in May 2021 leading to a volume growth of 3,06,022 units. These are wholesales, released by SIAM. Ola S1 Pro electric scooter wholesales are not available. But as per FADA, their retail sales for May 2022 stood at 9,225 units. This places Ola S1 PRO as the No 8 best selling scooter of India.Top 10 Scooters May 2022Honda Activa was the top selling scooter in May 2022. Sales stood at 1,49,470 units in the said month, up 778.93 percent over 17,006 units sold in May 2021. This was a 1,32,464 unit volume growth with the Activa commanding a 42.53 percent share.TVS Jupiter was at No. 2 with 59,613 units sold in May 2022, up 868.84 percent from 6,153 units sold in May 2021. Jupiter held a 16.96 percent share on this list. Suzuki Access sales increased from 9,706 units sold in May 2021 to 35,709 units in the past month, a growth of 267.91 percent with volume increase of 26,003 units.Top 10 Scooters May 2022TVS Ntorq was at No. 4 on the list of top 10 selling scooters in May 2022 with 26,005 units sold during the month. This was a 499.61 percent growth over 4,337 units sold in May 2021 leading to a 21,668 unit volume growth. TVS Ntorq range, which comprised of the Drum and Disk Brake variants besides Race Edition, Super Squad Edition and Race XP, received a new top end Ntorq 125 XT trim. Honda Dio, Hero Pleasure, Suzuki BurgmanNext on the list was the Honda Dio scooter with 20,497 units sold in May 2022. This was a YoY growth of 1107.84 percent over 1,697 units sold in the same month of the previous year. The Dio commands a 5.83 percent share.Hero Pleasure sales were at 18,531 units in the past month, up 739.27 percent over 2,208 units sold in May 2021. It was a 16,323 unit volume growth with the Pleasure commanding a 3.70 percent share.     Suzuki Intruder 150cc Cruiser Discontinued – 0 Units Sold In 2022

    Going forward, Suzuki will focus on naked, faired and ADV segments that have much higher demand in comparison to entry-level cruisersSuzuki Intruder 150cc DiscontinuedLaunched in 2017, Suzuki Intruder aimed at offering a unique experience to enthusiasts. It did manage to create a niche fan following, but not something that could be valued from a business perspective. The bike’s prospects hit rock-bottom in 2022, as not even a single unit was sold in the domestic market from Dec 2021 to May 2022. This has prompted the company to discontinue Intruder 155.Why Suzuki Intruder failedThere are multiple reasons that may explain why Intruder 155 did not meet expectations. Starting with the design, the radical bodywork may have been deemed as an overkill by many enthusiasts. While the curvy panelling seems attractive, it is too bulky for a 155cc bike. The fairing is essentially there to hide the relatively small sized engine.Design of Intruder 155 is difficult to interpret, as it appears to have a lot of clutter. There’s the triangular headlamp, angular twin exhaust and broad rear section, all of which contribute to design contradictions inherent in the bike. It doesn’t give the confidence and sense of reliability that people usually look for in a bike.Another worry for enthusiasts could have been the extensive use of plastic panels. These could come loose with time, creating vibrations and rattling sounds. The sheen is also likely to be lost overtime, as the panels are exposed to the elements. Such doubts may have prevented people from choosing Intruder 155.Suzuki Intruder Discontinued – Sales 0 UnitsAvailability of a decent, affordable alternative in the form of Bajaj Avenger is another factor that could have worked against Intruder 155. Avenger has a bare bones structure, which helps create a more rugged look and feel for the bike.Based on user reviews, there’s evidence that Avenger has better control and handling than Intruder. This is especially true when these bikes are used in an urban environment. For cruising on highways, Intruder is likely to work better, owing to its aerodynamic design.High pricingLast known price of Suzuki Avenger 155 was Rs 1,28,900 (ex-showroom Delhi). In comparison, Bajaj Avenger 160 is available at a starting price of Rs 1.12 lakh. If users can increase their budget by Rs 10k, they could go for Avenger 220 model that is available at Rs 1.38 lakh.With Intruder 155 discontinued, it puts a question mark on the possibility of Intruder 250. The bigger sibling was registered in 2019 and was expected to debut in 2021. It would have borrowed much of its hardware from Gixxer 250. However, the possibilities look pretty remote now.Entry-level cruisers may not be as popular as other bikes, but this segment has generated consistent numbers for Bajaj. But what isn’t even remotely justifiable is the price of the motorcycle. In Europe, YZF-R125 costs around GBP 5,000 (approx Rs. 4.73 lakh) and the Sport Pack adds GBP 391 more. This takes the overall price to GBP 5391 (approx Rs. 5.10 lakh).     Ather Electric Scooter New Plant To Be Their Largest – 15 Lakh Production Capacity

The company strives to make the Indian scooter market eco-friendly and be a part of the green revolution. In that regard, they only manufacture electric vehicles and plan to stay that way.But as more EV startups are entering the electric scooter market, more are the no of EVs on road with cheap and lower quality parts. This has resulted in dangerous electric scooter fire instances. Making EVs is not the hardest part. Making good EVs is. In this regard, Ather has come off as a solid performer and a consistent at that too.Ather Electric Scooter New Third PlantAther currently has two models on sale in India, 450X and 450 Plus. Both of them are manufactured at Ather’s manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. It has a production capacity of 1.2 lakh vehicles annually. Ather is also working on its second manufacturing facility in Hosur itself.Production at the 2nd plant has not started yet. When up and running, this second factory is capable of taking Ather’s total production up to 4 lakh units per annum. But with increasing competition in the Indian electric scooter space with prominent new entrants like Ola and Simple Energy and mainstream manufacturers like TVS, more production is always better.Existing Ather Electric Scooter Production Plant at HosurAdding to the competition, Bajaj’s subsidiary Chetak recently inaugurated its EV production facility at Akurdi. So, Ather has to ramp up its production and invest in new products to stay relevant in the game. Ather is reportedly in the final rounds of talks with various state governments like Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.Ather is looking for land up to 100 acres for its third manufacturing facility. This new plant will have production capacity of 15 lakh units annually, making it the largest Ather Energy plant yet. The EV startup is expected to finalize a location among the above-mentioned states by the end of next month.Ather Energy Fund Raising CampaignAther has been backed by Hero MotoCorp since early stages. Hero has been consistently supporting Ather since 2016 and currently holds a 35% stake in Ather Energy. With positive growth and consistent monthly sales, Ather has been doing really good in the EV market. It also recorded its highest-ever monthly sales in May 2022.Ather Energy, with its consistent growth, has attracted a lot of funds. Last month, it raised around Rs. 990 crores from National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Ltd’s Strategic Opportunities Fund, Hero MotoCorp and some other investors. With 38 Experience centers across 32 cities, Ather is one of the prominent electric scooter manufacturers in India.     Mahindra Owned Peugeot 2W Launches New 125cc Scooter

    Peugeot Pulsion 125 is the French automaker’s small capacity maxi-scooter for the European marketMahindra Peugeot Pulsion 125Does the Peugeot Pulsion 125 scooter ring a bell? No? It was being tested for the Indian market in 2019. We had seen test mules too. But the plan did not materialise. It was dead in the water before it could be finalised and launched in India. Peugeot Two Wheelers is owned by India’s Mahindra Group. There are plans to launch Peugeot scooters in India. But no timeline is available.Fast forwarding 3 years, Peugeot Pulsion 125 has been updated in Europe. The maxi scooter now complies with Euro 5 emission standards that are in effect in the European market. Along with compliance with emission standards, it also gets a slightly revised design and some feature upgrades. It also received some mechanical changes that put it against the popular Yamaha Aerox 155.Peugeot Pulsion 125 DesignPeugeot gets a typical maxi style layout and design. It doesn’t look bulging and disproportionate and is quite sizable for its engine capacity. At front, it gets twin-pod headlight elements that get separate chambers for low beam and high beam. Powering these headlights are bright LED units. They also get LED DRLs flanking the headlights. Above the headlights, it gets a small visor housing the classic Peugeot Lion motif that gets a smoked finish.Being a maxi-styled scooter, it carries forward the non step-through footboard. Even though step-through scooters have convenience going for it, non step-through floor boards have advantages too. This type of design layout liberates a lot of space inside the boot as the fuel tank is housed in the spine. This liberated boot space can be helpful in storing 2 helmets and then some more itineraries.Mahindra Peugeot Pulsion 125Non step-through floor boards found on maxi-styled scooters usually house the fuel tank. Since the fuel tank is housed in the spine, it doesn’t face as many constraints as opposed to fitting it inside the boot, for example. So, they are usually higher capacity fuel tanks and that’s exactly the case with Peugeot Pulsion 125 too. It gets a large 11.1L fuel tank that is larger than some street motorcycles’ fuel tanks.Specs & PricePulsion 125 comes with a 125 cc single-cylinder engine that is liquid-cooled and produces 14.6 PS at 8800 RPM and 12.4 Nm at 6900 RPM. If we take Yamaha’s Aerox 155 engine, it displaces 30 cc more and also comes with VVA technology. It makes 15 PS at 8000 RPM and 13.9 Nm at 6500 RPM from its R15 V4 derived engine.Suspension duties at front is handled by 37 mm telescopic suspension with 95 mm suspension travel. At the rear, it gets twin shock absorbers with 90 mm suspension travel. It gets dual-channel ABS with 260 mm disc at front and a 210 mm disc at back.Mahindra Peugeot Pulsion 125In terms of features, it gets USB charging, keyless ignition, emergency brake lights and a small TFT display with smartphone connectivity and features like navigation and notification alerts. It is priced at EUR 4,549 (approx Rs. 3.70 lakh) and goes till EUR 4,899 (approx Rs. 3.98 lakh). Peugeot is highly unlikely to launch it in India because of the high price tag for a 125 cc maxi-scooter and competition like Yamaha Aerox 155. More

In recent news, Aprilia Storm 125cc scooter disc variant has just been discontinued and only the drum brake variant is on sale.Vespa, Aprilia Prices – June 2022Vespa scooter prices for June 2022 start at Rs 1.15 lakh for the ZX 125 and at Rs 1.29 for the VXL 125. The Vespa VXL 150 and SXL 125 are now priced at Rs 1.42 lakh and Rs 1.33 lakh respectively while SXL 150 carries a new price tag of Rs 1.47 lakh. Vespa also has the Racing Sixties 125 and 150 in the company lineup priced at Rs 1.39 and Rs 1.53 respectively while the top of the line Elegante 150 is priced at Rs 1.55 (all prices ex-showroom).Aprilia had hiked prices in May 2022 by a maximum of Rs 6,728 and now scooter prices have been hiked by a maximum of Rs 5,000 from June 2022. The Storm 125 cc scooter, which was at 1.06 lakh in May 2022 has been increased by Rs 5,000 to Rs 1.11 lakh from 1st June 2022.The SR RST 125 also sees a price hike of Rs 5,000 to Rs 1.21 lakh from Rs 1.16 lakh while the SR RST 160 comes in with a Rs 4,000 higher price to Rs 1.30 lakh from Rs 1.26 lakh it commanded in May 2022. Aprilia SR RST Race (Rs.1.39 lakh) and SR RST Carbon (1.32 lakh) along with the SXR 125 (Rs 1.31 lakh) and SXR 160 (1.42 lakh) each see prices increased by Rs 4,000 over their May 2022 pricing.Vespa, Aprilia Prices – June 2022Vespa, Aprilia sales – April 2022Vespa and Aprilia sales ended April 2022 on a positive note. Vespa sales increased 39.74 percent YoY to 3,594 units in April 2022, up from 2,572 units sold in April 2021 relating to a volume growth of 1,022 units. MoM sales were down 3.02 percent over 3,706 units sold in March 2022.Vespa Scooter Sales April 2022It was both the Vespa 125cc and 150cc scooters that saw YoY growth of 42.40 percent and 5.41 percent respectively. 125cc sales stood at 3,399 units in April 2022, up from 2,387 units sold in April 2021 commanding a 94.57 percent share in the company lineup. MoM sales of both the 125cc and 160cc scooters dipped 7 percent and 19.02 percent respectively from 1,115 units and 731 units sold in March 2022. More
