In this post, we will take a look at the Two wheeler retail sales in Jan 2023, shared by FADA. Two wheeler retail sales improved 10.07 percent to 12,65,069 units in Jan 2023, up from 11,49,351 units sold in Jan 2022. Various policies such as added income tax rebate, revised budget allocation in terms of vehicle scrappage policy and exemption of income tax duties on manufacturing lithium batteries could boost sales in this segment in the months ahead.Hero MotoCorp topped the sales charts in Jan 2023. Retail sales stood at 3,70,690 units up from 3,56,117 units sold in Jan 2022. The new Xoom scooter 110 cc is set to boost sales in the coming month. This scooter has been introduced in three variants – LX, VX and ZX priced at Rs 68,599, Rs 71,799 and Rs 76,699 respectively.Two Wheeler Sales Jan 2023At No. 2 was Honda with sales of 3,18,184 units in Jan 2023, up from 2,58,128 units sold in Jan 2022. Market share improved to 25.15 percent from 22.46 percent YoY. Honda seeks to enter the electric two wheeler segment with new electric scooters and motorcycles. First Honda electric scooter is likely to launch in India next year.TVS Motor sales improved to 2,08,164 units YoY in Jan 2023 from 1,80,543 units sold in Jan 2022. Market share also went up to 16.45 percent from 15.71 percent. It was the TVS iQube that has been bringing in good sales growing steadily each quarter in the past calendar year and reached a record high of 59,000 units in 2022.Two Wheeler Retail Sales Jan 2023Bajaj Auto sales dipped YoY to 1,38,002 units from 1,40,469 units sold in Jan 2022 while Royal Enfield sales were higher at 64,233 units in Jan 2023 as against 47,928 units sold in Jan 2022. Suzuki and Yamaha posted YoY growth at 59,554 units and 47,296 units respectively. These two wheeler makers had seen sales of 44,542 units and 42,447 units in Jan 2022.Electric 2W Retail Sales Jan 2023Significant growth was seen in the case of electric two wheelers. Ola sales increased to 18,245 units in Jan 2023 from 1,106 units sold in Jan 2022. It was followed by Ather Energy with 9,139 units sold last month, up from 1,881 units sold in Jan 2022. Ather has also just commenced deliveries of the 450X which claims to be the first ever scooter with on board Google Maps.Hero Electric sales went down to 6,393 units in Jan 2023 from 7,764 units sold in Jan 2022 as did Okinawa which had sales dip to 4,404 units in the past month from 5,615 units sold in Jan 2022. On the other hand, Ampere saw its sales increase to 4,366 units in Jan 2023 from 4,220 units sold in Jan 2022.Classic Legends (Jawa / Yezdi) noted higher sales last month to 3,572 units from 2,371 units sold in Jan 2022. Piaggio was another two wheeler OEM to post YoY degrowth to 3,078 units in Jan 2023 from 4,766 unit retail sales in Jan 2022. Okaya EV had sales of 1,265 units in the past month while there were other OEMs which also included electric vehicle two wheeler makers who added 8,484 units to this list in Jan 2023, down from 51,454 units sold in Jan 2022. This new model has also reached a few dealerships ahead of launch and has been papped alongside MY2023 R15 and MT 15. It gets a new Blue shade and doesn’t resemble Yamaha FZ-X’s Metallic Blue option. Instead, it resembles the Racing Blue shade offered with the MT 15 and R15.New FZ-X Gets Dual-Channel ABSApart from this new colour, new MY2023 FZ-X will also feature dual-channel ABS, something which was missing in outgoing model. Dual-channel ABS is likely to be offered as standard and is not exclusive to this new edition. That said, Yamaha might limit dual-channel ABS just for this new edition and pit it as top-spec trim for FZ-X.2023 Yamaha FZ-X Arrives At DealerMechanically, there won’t be any changes on R15 and MT-15. Only FZ-X will get an upgrade in braking hardware in the form of dual-channel ABS. Especially budget commuters. Right now, we don’t have any quirky motorcycles on sale. At least from mainstream manufacturers and well-established startups.We had Navi from Honda, which was an attempt to create a mini motorcycle. Even though it may have looked like one, it wasn’t a mini motorcycle. It was just a re-shaped Activa with the same swingarm-mounted engine. In global markets, Honda sells Grom, a proper mini motorcycle.Now it will get a new rival in the form of CFMoto Papio and Papio XO-1. Standard Papio is a mini Street bike, while Papio XO-1 is an incredibly adorable mini Cafe Racer. The latter is something I would buy spontaneously. Would I regret it later? Let’s take a look.New CFMoto 125cc Retro Motorcycle – Papio XO-1Mini motorcycles were never a thing in India. In markets like the USA, these are novelties. This is something you could have a blast on in a trail. Being small and light, one can (relatively) transport these in a hatchback too. One look at CFMoto Papio XO-1, and you can’t help but be smitten. It draws inspiration from the 80s with twin circular headlights housed in a bikini fairing.New CFMoto 125cc Retro MotorcycleBar-end mirrors, clip-on handlebars, a round speedo, a flowing fuel tank and a stubby subframe complete the Cafe Racer look. In some ways, it reminds me of the recently launched Ducati Desert X too. They are type approved in China in two variants and can land in North America in the future. One with ABS and other without.New CFMoto 125cc Retro MotorcycleCFMoto didn’t just slap some parts on standard Papio and call it a day. A lot has changed with XO-1. Handlebars are clip-on and XO-1 gets different fuel tank design, front end, turn indicators, mirrors, seats, footrest mountings, different chain guards and more. Rear is different too as the number plate and blinkers are on this new chain guard as XO-1 features an underbelly muffler.XO-1 also gets front USD forks, twin LED circular headlights, and a fully-digital circular instrument console. The fairing is the main highlight of CFMoto Papio XO-1 over standard Papio. The frame, engine and other components are identical. Speaking of its engine, it is a 126 cc single-cylinder unit making 9.4 bhp and 8.2 Nm.New CFMoto 125cc Retro MotorcyclePurpose of Mini MotorcyclesCFMoto Papio XO-1 reportedly weighs 251 Pounds (113.8 kg). Because it is not a very powerful machine, it is very forgiving for novice riders. If you want to teach your child motorcycling, this would be a perfect tool. As per CFMoto in India, 300 NK, 650 NK, 650 MT and 650 GT are on sale. Weirdly, CFMoto’s 649cc parallel-twin engine is identical to that of Kawasaki’s 649cc engine. Even bore and stroke are identical.Sticking with the Mini motorcycle segment, in their purest form, wouldn’t be feasible for India as they’re quite pricey. Standard CFMoto Papio cost $2,999 (approx Rs. 2.5 lakh, ex-sh). Given the extra coolness and hardware on Papio XO-1, a price tag of $4,500 (approx Rs. 3.7 lakh, ex-sh) is not far-fetched. India launch is not likely. Answering the original question, I wouldn’t regret buying this spontaneously owing to its sheer cool factor. More

We assess sales of 4 of the top electric scooters that include the Ola S1, TVS iQube, Ather 450 and Bajaj Chetak.Taking these 4 leading e-scooters into account, sales in the past calendar year stood at 2,55,044 units. Out of this, Ola S1 contributed 1,06,962 units (retail) with a monthly average of 8,914 units, and a share percentage of 41.94.Electric Scooter Sales 2022Sales in Q1 of 2022 stood at 14,127 units which increased to 27,790 units in Q2 2022. Q3 sales dipped to 16,209 units only to make up in Q4 of 2022 with 48,836 unit sales with sales in each of the last 3 months of the year above the 15,000 unit mark. Ola Electric currently offers the S1 Pro and S1 while Ola S1 Air is set to enter markets in April 2023.TVS iQube scooter sales stood at 59,166 units in CY 2022. This was at an average of 4,931 units each month with a 23.20 percent share. TVS iQube was updated in May 2022 and since then monthly sales have increased significantly. From Q1 sales of 5,566 units, sales increased to 8,725 units in Q2 2022 and then on to 15,645 units and 29,230 units in Q3 and Q4 respectively.Electric Scooter Sales 2022 – Ola S1 Vs iQube Vs Ather Vs ChetakTremendous sales growth was also seen in the case of the Ather electric scooter through CY 2022. Total sales stood at 59,123 units in the past year with a monthly average of 4,927 units and 23.18 percent share. Sales which started off at 7,458 units in Q1 2022 increased to 10,797 units in Q2 2022.Ather and Bajaj Electric Scooter SalesH1 sales stood at 18,255 units. Q3 sales were up at 16,234 units which went ahead to 24,634 units in Q4 2022 to end H2 2022 with 40,868 units. December 2022 was the highest monthly sales for Ather 450 at 9,187 units. The company has recently introduced new colours for the 450 while seat gets larger, wider and more comfortable.In CY 2022, there were a total of 29,793 units of the Bajaj Chetak sold. This was an average of 2,483 units with an 11.68 percent share among these 4 best-selling electric scooters. Chetak sales increased from 3,384 units in Q1 2022 to 6,259 units in the Q2 period.Q3 and Q4 sales stood at 9,799 units and 10,351 units respectively. BMW benefitted from this gig as it not only helped them expand their portfolio, but also enter a new segment. Thanks to which, BMW is registering more sales than ever before.The 310 cc platform with a trellis frame is manufactured here in India by TVS. BMW got three motorcycles out of this platform. G 310 R street bike, G 310 GS adventure bike and G 310 RR sports machine. However, TVS only sold one motorcycle based on this platform.It was the Apache RR 310, a fully-faired sports machine. In fact, BMW G 310 RR is pound for pound, the same bike as Apache RR 310, just Rs. 27,000 more for white colour. Now, sources reveal that TVS is soon going to launch a street motorcycle based on the BMW G 310 R.New TVS Motorcycle Based On BMW G 310 RThe main question arises, whether TVS will go BMW’s route and sell the exact same bike as G 310 R? Or if there will be enough changes. This is a difficult question to answer as of now. But going by our sources, TVC shoot has already begun at MMRT race track, Chennai. Given that this product is already manufactured by TVS, there will be minimal changes to G 310 R. Most of them will be in the design front. Pricing for this motorcycle is likely to be pegged below that of Apache RR 310 starting at Rs. 2.67 lakh (ex-sh).2023 TVS Apache 310 Street RenderOur rendering artist Pratyush Raut has penned down his version of a TVS motorcycle based on BMW G 310 R. We could expect TVS to launch something similar as it is mostly just a rebranding exercise. Final production model sold by TVS could look a lot like our render of this new TVS motorcycle.The bike on which it will be based, BMW G 310 R, is priced at Rs. 2.8 lakh (ex-sh). If we remove BMW premium pricing, a price tag of around Rs. 2.5 lakh to 2.55 lakh (prices ex-sh) is reasonable for this new TVS motorcycle. There is a possibility of it being called Apache R 310 or Apache 310 R or even Apache RTR 310.Specs & FeaturesGiven its expected price tag of around Rs. 2.5 to 2.55 lakh, one would think TVS would cut a lot of corners. If we take Apache RR 310 and BMW G 310 RR as an example, the former gets identical componentry and fairing. In terms of features, it is actually the Apache that is more feature loaded offering smartphone connectivity with TVS proprietary Smart Xonnect tech.2023 TVS Apache 310 Street RenderThis new TVS motorcycle will also get Smart Xonnect connected features via a dedicated app too.       Overall, the 200cc – 500cc segment took a hit as it bled volume by 11.77% YoY and 12.33% MoM – Volume loss was significant tooImage – Yo RiderRoyal Enfield has 6 motorcycles on offer in the 200cc – 500cc segment. Out of the 23 entries on this list, Royal Enfield occupies 1st to 6th spots with its 6 offerings into top 10 motorcycles within this space. Sidelining rivals like this is great, but has the company outdone itself by pushing volumes? Not really. December 2022 is generally not a month for auto manufacturers to flex, as sales are usually meek.Kicking things off with Classic 350 taking top spot on this list with 20,682 units. It was not enough to cross 34,723 units sold in December 2021 and 26,702 in November 2022. Numbers shrunk for Classic 350 by 40.44% YoY and 22.55% MoM. Still, it is the highest volume pusher in 200cc – 500cc segment with 31.50% market share.Top 10 200cc To 500cc M’Cycles Dec 2022Volume loss was 14,041 units YoY and 6,020 units MoM. Hunter 350 closed the gap between Classic 350 with 17,261 units and registered 10.73% MoM growth. With 8,816 units, evergreen Bullet 350 shows green with 9.37% YoY growth and 7.37% MoM growth. Meteor 350 sales stood at 6,298 units and fell into the red completely.Electra 350 just managed to push 3,381 units and was devoid of any positive growth. 25.22% YoY decline and 18.92% MoM decline were registered. Himalayan is the least-selling Royal Enfield but is the highest-selling ADV in 200cc – 500cc space. With 2,257 units, Himalayan fares better than other ADVs and registered MoM growth of 6.41% and sales halved YoY with a 51.05% decline.Motorcycle sales 200cc to 500cc segment – Dec 2022 vs Dec 2021Honda CB350 didn’t fare better as opposed to its rivals. With just 1,022 CB350s sold last month, numbers almost halved MoM with a 49.70% decline and a 25.07% YoY decline. In quarter-litre space, KTM has an upper hand with its 250 lineup. Sales stood at 981 units and both YoY and MoM growth stood at 7.92%. With 72 units gained in volume. Dominar 250 and Dominar 400 took 9th and 10th spots with 406 units and 337 units respectively and failed to register any sort of positive growth.Suzuki’s quarter-liter ADV V Strom 250 SX sold 291 units with an 8.78% decline MoM. KTM’s 390 series fared better YoY with 81.76% growth. However, the 289 units sold last month were not enough to offset 455 units sold a month before. Bajaj’s Avenger 220 and Pulsar 250 series sold 270 units and 245 units respectively. Bajaj’s indigenously developed 250 platform was supposed to be revolutionary, but it seems like they aren’t well received. Apache RR 310 sold 214 units and still didn’t register any positive growth.Bikes With Sub 100 UnitsKawasaki Ninja 300 is the most expensive product on this list. That said, it has been a (relatively) consistent seller since its launch, years ago. Sales declined with just 96 units sold last month.
