First among these will be an electric Activa with a fixed battery and a moped with swappable battery tech for B2C customersImage for illustration purpose only. For a long time, the Indian 2W EV revolution was in the hands of startups like Ola and Ather. Now, mainstream manufacturers like TVS and Bajaj have stepped in to carve a segment for themselves. Honda doesn’t want to be left behind as it is the second-largest 2W manufacturer and the largest scooter manufacturer in India. The company’s holistic approach will be revealed tomorrow on March 29th and reportedly, there will be 10 EVs in the bag for India. Two of these are going to set the grounds for future EVs to follow. One of these first two will be an electric Activa with a fixed battery and the other will be a moped (likely Benly-e) with a removable battery.Honda India will launch 10 new electric scooters and motorcycles by 2028Honda Plans 10 2W EVsThe company is reportedly developing 10 different EVs to cater to all sorts of customer base. Expect different speeds, ranges, body types, styles, features and even prices with these upcoming EVs. In the roadmap revealed by the company last year, we can see multiple scooters with varied design and body, we have maxi scooters, motorcycles, and even mini-bikes.This is a holistic approach to establishing a portfolio to cater to most customer bases. Given that India’s largest automaker Hero MotoCorp has set its foot in the 2W EV space with the Vida brand, Honda needs to hurry up.First Japanese Brand To Enter EV SpaceLaunch timeframe for these vehicles is said to be by the end of this decade. Starting with Electric Activa in 2024 and Benly-e (likely) soon after that with a swappable battery. These are codenamed GJNA and K4BA (not respectively). By doing so, Honda will essentially be the first Japanese motorcycle and scooter manufacturer to venture in EV space in India.Currently, In India, Ola has carved a niche for itself by offering a plethora of features and is the highest seller in its segment. Honda might bank heavily on its Activa brand instead of features to push volumes.Battery Swapping StationsFor Honda, battery swapping tech is likely to be the key to establishing supremacy over rivals. A new vertical named Honda Power Pack Energy India has been established in Bengaluru. Starting from Bengaluru, Honda has partnered up with HPCL and Bengaluru Metro to establish swapping stations. When started, these swapping stations will be equipped to provide 1.35 kWh battery packs for swaps for electric two and three-wheeled vehicles. Soon after this, major cities will see a chain of swapping stations popping up. This upgrade of the manufacturing plant will allow Honda to build and export world-class products from the Indian facility.Honda currently exports motorcycles to 40 different countries and the upgrade will help them reach new scales. Honda Roadmap also facilitates a 360-degree state-of-the-art turnaround of the factory. In effect, all corporate functions happen under one roof to improve efficiency of the operations and efficiency across teams and verticals.Commuter flex-fuel motorcycleThe Japanese manufacturer is also looking to explore the possibilities of flex-fuel technologies in India. Yamaha R25 Self-Balancing Motorcycle – Aims To Reduce Accidents

OEMs like Honda and BMW have also showcased their respective motorcycle self-balancing systems in the past, but a production version remains elusiveYamaha R25 Self-Balancing Tech ShowcasedAiming to reduce motorcycle-linked fatalities to zero by 2050, Yamaha has unveiled its self-balancing system. The self-balancing system is a key component of Yamaha’s Advanced Motorcycle Stabilisation Assist System (AMSAS). Yamaha essentially wants to create an accident-free world for its users, which is part the company’s Jin-Ki Kanno x Jin-Ki Anzen Safety Vision.Yamaha is testing its self-balancing tech on a R25. It will be prudent to not expect a launch soon, as the tech will require more time to be perfected. Performance in real-world conditions with chaotic traffic is where things can become a bit complicated. However, if all tests are successfully passed, Yamaha will be looking to introduce the self-balancing tech to several of its bikes.Yamaha R25 Self-Balancing Tech ShowcasedYamaha self-balancing tech – How it works?Yamaha’s self-balancing tech works by stabilizing the vehicle’s tilt at low speeds. For controlling the driving forces and steering forces, motor actuators have been installed on the front wheel and handlebars, respectively. The actuators are in turn controlled by a 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The system allows the bike to be automatically stabilized at low speeds. The test vehicle can even be seen moving forward without the rider. When starting the bike or stopping, the stability is provided by the actuator installed on the front wheel. Once in motion and up to around 5 kmph, the stability is provided by the actuator fitted to the handlebars. In essence, the self-balancing system can perform at walking speeds. In such scenarios, no rider input will be required.[embedded content][embedded content]Yamaha’s self-balancing tech is currently at mid-development stage. It is one of the several rider assistance systems being developed by the company. A relevant example is radar-linked Unified Brake System seen with the Tracer 9 GT+. Apart from motorcycles, Yamaha has plans to introduce its self-balancing tech for various other personal mobility applications such as bicycles. Miniaturization of the components will be targeted accordingly, wherever feasible. How can self-balancing tech be useful?A self-balancing system can be a great asset for shorter individuals or users who find it difficult to manage the weight of the bike at starting and stopping. It will also be useful for learners, as there will be reduced risk of the bike topping over. Some segments of users with physical disabilities can also benefit from a self-balancing motorcycle. As self-balancing tech could be the next big thing in the world of two-wheelers, a lot of research is being conducted in this space. Earlier this year at 2023 Auto Expo, Liger Mobility had showcased its Liger X and Liger X+ self-balancing electric scooters. The scooter was able to self-balance itself without any inputs from the rider. Bookings for Liger self-balancing electric scooter are expected to commence later this year. Deliveries will begin by end of this year. More

TVS Jupiter Electric Scooter Patent Leaks – To Rival Activa EV

With good response to iQube, TVS is looking to expand it EV portfolio with multiple new productsImage for illustration purpose onlyMainstream two-wheeler manufacturers like TVS, Bajaj and Hero MotoCorp currently have a single product each in their electric portfolio. TVS is looking to strengthen its presence by launching new products in the range of 5kW to 25kW. These new products will be launched over the next 18 months.TVS plans were revealed by the company’s CEO KN Radhakrishnan in a recent conference. TVS new electric two-wheelers will be getting a new powertrain. This is evident from a recent patent filed by the company. This new powertrain is what could be powering the upcoming Jupiter electric scooter, which will rival Activa electric next year.TVS Jupiter Electric Scooter Patent LeaksTVS Jupiter Electric Scooter Patent Leaks – More powerful powertrain, higher rangeiQube utilizes a hub motor that has its advantages such as silent operations and minimal energy loss. However, a hub motor may not be able to perform that well in cases where power output is more than 5kW. As TVS new electric two-wheelers will be in range of 5kW to 25kW, a new mid-mounted motor is being developed. A recent patent filing has revealed some interesting details about the new electric powertrain.A simple transmission system has been used to connect the mid-mounted motor to the rear wheel. A unique aspect is that the transmission casing doubles up as the swingarm. This is likely to help reduce the overall weight of the intended electric two-wheeler. At the motor’s end, the casing is linked to a pivot. At the wheel end, the casing supports the rear axle.TVS Jupiter Electric Scooter Patent LeaksA drive gear transfers power from the motor to the rear wheel. TVS has termed it as an ‘endless transmission drive’. The patent mentions the possibility of using either a chain drive or a belt drive. As compared to the hub motor where the motor and wheel spin at the same speed, this new powertrain is characterized by a speed reduction ratio. It means that the speed at which the motor and rear wheel spin will be different.TVS new electric powertrain vs rivalsMid-mounted motors are preferred for vehicles with higher power output. Similar systems are already in use with electric scooters like Ather 450X and Ola S1 Pro. TVS will probably be looking to create a new range of performance-oriented electric two-wheelers with this new powertrain. For reference, iQube has a 4.4 kW setup that achieves 0-40 kmph in just 4.2 seconds.TVS Jupiter electric with the new mid-mounted motor will deliver a better overall ride experience. It will rival the upcoming Honda Activa electric scooter, which is planned for launch in Jan 2024. In the petrol scooter segment, Activa and Jupiter are the top 2 selling scooters in India. The rivalry is likely to continue in the EV era too. With its new electric models, TVS will be able to target a wider customer base. As of now, iQube has already entered the list of top 10 bestselling scooters in the country. Sales in February 2023 were at 15,522 units, a YoY gain of 593.57%. With a diversified electric portfolio, TVS will also be able to increase market share. Enthusiasts are also waiting for launch of iQube ST variant that was announced last year. More
