New Bajaj EV Plant Work Starts At The Site Of Iconic Chetak Scooter

Bajaj Chetak ScooterEVs set to rollout by June 2022 for India and exports from new Bajaj Auto Electric Vehicle manufacturing unit at Akurdi (Pune)
Bajaj Auto has announced a new ‘Electric Vehicle’ manufacturing unit at Akurdi (Pune). EVs are set to roll out by June 2022, and will cater to the domestic market, and exports. This entails an investment of Rs 300 Cr (USD 40 Mn) to build manufacturing capacity for 5,00,000 EVs per annum. The site is the same used as the original Chetak  scooter factory.
Work at the Akurdi EV plant has now commenced, and in time, this site will generate incremental employment for 800 people. Bajaj will launch new electric scooters, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles in the future. These are expected to be built at this new plant. Next year, Bajaj will launch Chetak based Husqvarna electric scooter (spied in Pune recently). Post that, Husqvarna electric motorcycle e-pilen is also planned for launch.
    New Bajaj EV Plant
Being co-located with Bajaj Auto’s Akurdi R&D centre ensures greater collaboration. The complete EV range solution ties together as a hub for design, development and manufacturing. For Bajaj, Chetak as a brand was the backbone of the manufacturer’s success for years to an end.
As such, it came as no surprise that when an electric scooter was readied for launch, the Chetak moniker was re-introduced. The name breeds familiarity, and lives on as a great identifier in the blueprint for future mobility solutions.
Rajiv Bajaj and Senior Management of Bajaj Auto at the new plant site
Akurdi EV manufacturing plant is spread over half a million sq. ft. In addition to investments made by Bajaj Auto, vendors will invest an additional Rs 250 Cr (USD 33 Mn). Akurdi EV unit functionality is enhanced through robotic and automated manufacturing systems for all processes.
This includes logistics and material handling, fabrication and painting, assembly and quality assurance. Systems are built to cater to a flexible product mix on the basis of maximum process efficiency. Systems take into account best worker ergonomics.
    EV mobility and solutions
Bajaj has a unique business model that works wonders for the manufacturer. The company doesn’t sell scooters except Chetak electric scooter, which is a fairly recent launch. Its motorcycle market prowess sees exports at par with domestic market sales. And these ever-growing numbers are helped further with a small mix of CVs (auto rickshaws/tuktuks).
Rajiv Bajaj – Managing Director, Bajaj Auto Ltd. said, “In 2001 Bajaj 2.0 took off on the roaring Pulsar, in 2021 Bajaj 3.0 arrived on the charming Chetak. Going forward, for the Bajaj portfolio, except for implementing one state-of-the-art ICE platform that is currently under development, all our R&D resources are now laser focused on creating EV solutions for the future.
This alignment reflects our belief that light Electric Vehicles for sustainable urban mobility is an idea whose time may finally have come. Thus, this investment at Akurdi completes the virtuous cycle of hi-tech R&D competencies, high-efficiency engineering capabilities, world class supply chain synergies, and global distribution network which should leapfrog us into a market leading position in EVs in India and overseas.” More

Bajaj Chetak Vs TVS iQube – Electric Scooter Sales Nov 2021

Bajaj Chetak Electric ScooteriQube takes the lead in November 2021, with YoY sales improving by more than 600 percent
Close fight between Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube continues, with the latter posting higher sales numbers in November 2021. iQube also leads in overall sales during the period from January to November.
With just one more month to go in this year, it is likely that TVS iQube will be ahead of Chetak in 2021. Unless of course Chetak makes a strong comeback in December. It is currently 421 units short of iQube in terms of total sales during Jan-Nov 2021.
Electric Scooter Sales Nov 2021 – Chetak vs iQube
Bajaj Chetak sales were at 511 units in November 2021. YoY growth is at 93.56%, as compared to 264 units sold in November last year. Chetak MoM growth is down by -38.80%, as compared to 835 units sold in October 2021. Average monthly sales during the period from Jan-Nov 2021 is at 395 units per month.
TVS iQube sales in November 2021 is at 699 units. YoY growth has improved by a staggering 606%, as compared to 99 units sold in November last year. iQube MoM growth is at 76.96%, as compared to 395 units sold in October 2021. Average monthly sales during the period from Jan-Nov 2021 is at 433 units per month.
Electric Scooter Sales Nov 2021 – Bajaj Chetak vs TVS iQube
Taken together, Chetak and iQube have registered YoY growth of 233.33%. As compared to 1,210 units in November 2021, 363 units were sold in November last year. MoM growth is slightly down by -1.63%, as compared to 1,230 units sold in October 2021. Combined sales of Chetak and iQube have been consistently above the 1k mark since June this year.
During the period from Jan-Nov 2021, iQube has been ahead of Chetak in seven months. Chetak highest sales this year was in October at 835 units. In case of iQube, its best performance was 766 units in September.
Lowest point for both scooters this year was in May when sales were 31 units for Chetak and Nil for iQube. This was apparently due to second wave of Covid-19, when lockdowns and restrictions were quite common across the country.
Electric Scooter Sales 2021 – Bajaj Chetak vs TVS iQube
    Chetak vs iQube expansion plans
To boost sales, Bajaj and TVS are working to make their electric scooter available at more locations across the country. Chetak is currently available across four states – Maharastra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Cities covered include Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Bengaluru, Mangalore, Mysore, Chennai and Hyderabad.
In comparison, iQube appears to have a wider sales network. It is available in cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Aurangabad, Belgaum, Guntur, Guwahati, Jaipur, Indore, Kochi, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Kolhapur, Ludhiana, Lucknow and Meerut.
Both companies are initially giving preference to cities that have greater acceptance for electric scooters. Availability of charging infrastructure is another key factor being considered.
As global semiconductor chip shortage is expected to continue, electric scooter sales will be adversely impacted next year as well. New product launches in this segment will also pose significant challenges for Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube. More

2022 Bajaj Triumph 250cc Motorcycle Inspired By Trident – Render

Bajaj Triumph 250cc Motorcycle – RenderThe first Bajaj Triumph medium displacement motorcycle is likely to be ready in 2022
New Trident has become the best-selling Triumph motorcycle in India. While this motorcycle shares components from the immensely popular Street Triple including its in-line three-cylinder motor, the bodystyle have a variant extension in the more affordable range.
    Bajaj Triumph 250cc Motorcycle
We all know that Bajaj and Triumph are currently working on a family of medium displacement motorcycles, the first of which is set to carry a sub-INR-2-lakh price point. With Royal Enfield having a stronghold in that segment, it would make sense for the new Bajaj-Triumph offering to adopt a similar retro-classic flavour so as to take the fight up to the incumbent.
The price point indicates that the upcoming Indo-British motorcycle would be adopting a single-cylinder engine with an estimated displacement of around 200-300 cc. Engineering and development is being taken care of by Triumph Motorcycles in the UK while Bajaj will be responsible for manufacturing it in a cost effective manner in India.
Just like the compact family of KTM and Husqvarna motorcycles, Bajaj Auto’s production facility will be building Triumph’s medium displacement products locally for global consumption. Bajaj recently launched new 250cc motorcycles under the Pulsar branding. They already have Dominar 250, KTM 250 and Husqvarna 250 offerings in the 250cc segment. It is quite clear that Bajaj is bullish on the 250cc motorcycle segment.
Bajaj Triumph 250cc Motorcycle – Render
    Triumph Trident 250 a possibility?
While the body style of the first Bajaj Triumph medium displacement is anybody’s guess, cruiser or classic roadster are the most likely outcomes. If it is to be the latter, then we think the newly unveiled Trident could serve as design inspiration.
Our rendering artist Pratyush Rout has envisioned the Bajaj Triumph medium displacement motorcycle as a roadster, which could rival the upcoming roadsters from Jawa, Yezdi and Royal Enfield. He borrowed the Triumph Trident’s design lines and introduced interesting dual-tone paint schemes. The Bajaj Dominar engine is used for illustration purpose only.
From what you can see, a quarter-liter roadster with a good blend of classic and modern elements would be an interesting proposition at sub-INR-2-lakh price point. With a little over 20 hp on tap, the motorcycle in question would have Royal Enfield’s soon-to-be-launched next generation family of motorcycles covered.
    Launch Timeline
Before the pandemic crippled the world, Bajaj and Triumph officials went on record to reveal that the first product of their partnership will be ready in 2022. We expect the two wheeler giants to stick to the timeline without much delay.
This partnership would help Triumph establish its presence in the volume-rich global medium displacement segment while taking advantage of Bajaj Auto’s competitive cost structure. For the Indian partner, adding another globally renowned brand to its manufacturing portfolio can only be a good thing. More

Pulsar, Platina, Boxer Helps Bajaj Become No 1 Motorcycle Maker – Nov 2021

New Bajaj Pulsar 250November 2021 sees Bajaj triumph as the largest motorcycle manufacturer (domestic + exports) in India
It’s taken a long route to reach here but with groundwork laid strong, Bajaj is triumphant. The route taken isn’t traditional but the results count. India has an uncountable number of two-wheelers. Of them, the small cc mass market motorcycles make or break manufacturers. And for the longest time, Hero MotoCorp has dominated through this strategy.
Bajaj in the meantime diversified, and found potential in overseas markets. And export numbers have continued to grow, while Bajaj’s domestic market sales have held steady. The combination has now had desired results.
It also cements Bajaj’s global outreach and brings meaning to the brand’s quest to do business overseas. It beggars belief that other manufacturers haven’t yet realised the potential of overseas business resulting in export numbers that are marginal when compared to domestic sales.
    Bajaj Motorcycles Nov 2021
Bajaj Auto reported 3.38 lakh motorcycles in total (Domestic and Export markets) sales in November 2021. In a month where the top-sellers in India, Hero MotoCorp and Honda 2Wheelers reported 40.89 percent, and 35.28 percent, respectively, the playing field was made level. And Bajaj has been catapaulted to top spot.

This despite the fact that Bajaj reported total sales decline of 12 percent in November 2021. At the end, it was enough. Best sellers for Bajaj in domestic market were Pulsar and Platina range while in exports it was the Boxer and Pulsar range that was in the lead.
Exports hovered just under 2 lakh units at 1,93,520 units. This is miles ahead of of exports reported by Hero, Honda, and TVS. Bajaj reported domestic sales at 1,44,442 units for November 2021. Total motorcycle sales accounts for 3,37,962 units. Bajaj Chetak electric scooter is sold in the domestic market, of which 511 units are reported sold last month.
    Pulsar 100k monthly sales
Through FY2022, global Pulsar sales has surpassed the 100K units a month milestone thrice. YTD monthly average of Pulsars sold is as high as 97k. In India, Bajaj Platina sales doubled despite a contracted market. This Bajaj attributes to its ‘strategy of offering differentiation in an otherwise commoditised 100cc segment’.
This came about through teach and features. Exports have been robust with Nigeria, Egypt and Mexico markets reporting their highest ever Motorcycle retail sales. In Latin America, Bajaj Auto strengthened its sports segment leadership position.
Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto said, “To be the top manufacturer in the most challenging conditions is a true reflection of Bajaj Auto’s resilience and a consequence of our commitment to serve global customers through differentiated products and superior propositions. Our presence in over 70 countries has allowed us to deliver a steady performance despite the volatility in the environment.” More
