This is why Bajaj claims that they are The World’s Favourite Indian.Bajaj Auto recently inaugurated Chetak Technology’s new manufacturing facility at Akurdi. This manufacturing facility has been created for EV development and production for Bajaj’s subsidiary company Chetak Technology. Rakesh Sharma, exec director at Bajaj Auto, Sharma revealed what Bajaj Auto has on its plate right now and what it expects to be in the future.Bajaj Auto EV PortfolioThe Indian automaker is keen on maintaining a synergy between both its EV portfolio and IC engine vehicles portfolio. Sharma also expressed Bajaj Auto’s reservations as to why they’re not going all hands on deck with EVs just yet. This is because the transition from IC engine vehicles to EVs is not yet happening at a pace to justify the outright change in strategies.But Bajaj Auto realises the significance of EVs in markets like India where it is raining EVs and not in a good way. To provide undivided attention and developments, Bajaj decided to create its subsidiary Chetak Technology. With Chetak Technology, Bajaj aims to make it a global hub for EV design, development and production.2023 KTM Duke Electric – RenderBajaj believes that the scope of ICE vehicles will not get over in a hurry. Even optimistically considering that 50% of the bikes somehow become electric by the end of 2030, the other half will still be reliant on IC engines. Bajaj Auto is also expected to learn a lot of things from its new partnership with Yulu allowing it to integrate them with their product solutions. They will be launching a new EV later this year, exclusively for Yulu.Bajaj is also expected to expand Chetak’s EV portfolio both vertically and horizontally. Sharma also hints at possible sub-segments within Bajaj Auto or Chetak Technology in the form of Pulsar Electric two-wheelers while RE branding will still adhere to three-wheelers. He also mentioned that KTM is keen on electric motorcycle and so is Husqvarna electric scooter (spied testing in pune). According to him, Bajaj is still not in talks regarding EVs with its British partner Triumph.Chetak’s Global ExpansionChetak technology is toying with the idea of selling Chetak EVs overseas. Particularly, ASEAN markets where scooters form more than 90% of the market share in countries like Vietnam. Even though Bajaj Auto is still young in ASEAN markets, with supply-chain stabilisation, we can expect Bajaj to jump into this popular market with its EVs.If Pulsar electric will become a reality, we can expect Bajaj to base it on the existing Pulsar range of motorcycles with the same chassis and even body panels too. We can also see similar hardware like brakes and suspension that are currently doing duties in the Pulsar lineup. As only a few of the original parts of Pulsar NS160 have been used, this project is more like creating an entirely new bikeBajaj Pulsar Modified CruiserEverything has a limit, it’s said, but the law doesn’t seem to apply to the creativity of the human mind. A perfect example is this radical customization project where a Pulsar NS160 has been transformed into an eccentric cruiser bike. That it is capable of some off-roading as well goes on to show the creator’s focus on achieving an optimal balance of form and function.Most bike customization projects are built around the core frame. But in this case, even the stock chassis has been trashed. The project starts with taking apart the entire bike, starting with the fairing and moving on to dissemble the fuel tank, silencer, wheels, electricals and the engine.Bajaj Pulsar Modified CruiserNext step involves the making of an entirely new chassis using various types of metal bars and sheets. These are given the desired shape with the use of standard nut-bolts as well as welding the joints wherever needed. It’s quite a painful and time consuming process, as the chassis had to undergo multiple iterations before it was finalized.It’s the chassis design that provides the desired balance and handling capabilities for a bike. Even two-wheeler OEMs take several months to develop a new chassis from scratch. In this project, changes made to the chassis had to be tested each time. This meant assembling and disassembling the bike multiple times before it was rated road-worthy by its creator, Nitin Umbaranikar.[embedded content][embedded content]Once the chassis was finalized, the bike had to be disassembled once again to give a thorough coat of paint to the frame. Other key customizations in this project include a tweaked air filter and completely handmade steering system.Sporty fairingTo ensure it has an eye-catchy skin to go with its quirky internals, the modified bike gets entirely new fairing. It has been created using plastic sheets. The fairing covers much of the front and side sections as well as the fuel tank. For refuelling, a sliding mechanism has been provided that reveals the fuel tank opening.Instead of paint, the bike’s fairing has been wrapped in grey and white vinyl. This took a lot of time, as the bike has a complex fairing setup, placed at varying angles. Other ornamentations include dual LED headlamp, LED strip turn signals and LED lights on both wheels. Watching this bike on the streets at night is a real treat for the eyes.Bajaj Pulsar Modified CruiserSurprisingly, the cost of this project is just Rs 20k. It became possible, as many of the custom parts were made using scrap items. However, if one counts the amount of labour involved, this project’s cost will be much higher. Don’t fight me, but you’re wrong. Black is one of the prettiest colours a vehicle can get. Even here in hot and humid India, despite the negatives of the black colour, it is still very popular. If taken proper care of, that colour will hold its lustre for a very long time.Bajaj seems to be in the same thought process too because every single Pulsar to date, has had a black shade in its life cycle. Except for the new Pulsar 250 range by Bajaj. As impressive as they are, they only make do with a Grey shade which isn’t certainly black. So, Bajaj is set to change that as found from the recent developments.Bajaj Pulsar 250cc Eclipse EditionBajaj recently launched two new motorcycles based on their 250 cc platform. One of them has a street naked avatar named Pulsar N250 while the other is a faired motorcycle named Pulsar F250. Pulsar N250 only and its faired sibling come in 3 colour options each. These are Caribbean Blue, Techno Grey and Racing Red.Techno Grey is middle of the road in terms of darkness and Racing Red is bright and resembles a Cherry Red. Even though all the shades offered on both Pulsar N250 and F250 are decent in themselves, a Black shade was missing and Bajaj knows this too.Bajaj Pulsar 250cc Eclipse EditionBajaj recently took to Instagram to add 9 new pictures in a grid to tease a new black shade. They even have a landing page on their website with a registration form so that people could register their interest with Bajaj. Dubbed as ‘Dawn Of The Eclipse’, Bajaj Auto is teasing its upcoming black shade. We expect the new black shade to be called Eclipse Black or at least have the word Eclipse in it.Pulsar N250 & Pulsar F250Bajaj’s new 250 cc lineup is very well received by the media as well as the consumers. Bajaj has provided two characters with its 250 cc platform. Pulsar N250 radiates a street naked vibe while the Pulsar F250 radiates a Pulsar 220F vibe with its bikini fairing.Both these bikes get the same 249 cc single-cylinder engine that generates 24.1 bhp of power at 8750 RPM and 21.5 Nm of torque at 6500 RPM. It also gets features like oil cooling and Bajaj trademark Twin Spark technology. It is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Both bikes get single discs at both ends and a single-channel ABS system.Bajaj Pulsar 250cc Eclipse EditionWe expect Bajaj Auto to launch the new Eclipse shade very soon and it might be offered as a standard choice or might launch at a slight premium too. Bajaj hasn’t confirmed yet if the new Eclipse shade will be finished in gloss or matte or get an option for both. While it is Pulsar 125 that leads in domestic sales, the export markets are dominated by Pulsar 160, 180 and 200. After the biggest Pulsars, F250 and N250, Bajaj is readying the all-new Pulsar N160. Launch is expected in the second half of June.New Pulsar N160 borrows heavily from its larger capacity sibling, N250. Some of the closely matching features include projector LED headlight and sleek eyebrow-shaped LED DRLs. A significant percentage of the body panels closely resemble that of N250. Similarities are also evident in the seat design, trapezoidal rear view mirrors, grab rails, swingarm, tail section and tail light.2022 Bajaj Pulsar N160In terms of its unique features, 2022 Bajaj Pulsar N160 gets an underbelly exhaust. This ensures improved symmetrical aesthetics for the bike. In comparison, both Pulsar N250 and F250 are equipped with a stubby, upswept side exhaust. It appears that Bajaj has not just borrowed from Pulsar N250, but has actually made further improvements that will be available with other Pulsar bikes, starting with N160.Riding ergonomics seems fairly comfortable with the new Pulsar N160. The bike has a scooped-up rider seat, which should allow for improved control and handling. With its sculpted, aerodynamic front cowl and body panels, the bike seems ready for effortless cruising across city streets and highways. As a means of differentiation, the Pulsar N160 could get some new colour options.New Bajaj Pulsar N250Pulsar N160 engine and specsIn line with Bajaj’s plan to update its Pulsar range, N160 is likely to get a brand new engine. It could utilize a similar architecture, as seen with the Pulsar 250. In its current form, Pulsar NS160 is powered by a 160.3 cc motor. It generates 17.2 PS of max power at 9,000 rpm and 14.6 Nm of peak torque at 7,250 rpm. It is mated to a 5-speed gearbox.New Pulsar is likely to deliver hi-torque performance and fuel efficiency could also witness an improvement. Other hardware items like the frame and front and rear suspension are the same as Pulsar 250. Pulsar N160 will continue to be offered with a kick starter, as available with the current model. Braking system has disc brakes at both ends, integrated with single channel ABS.With the updates, new Pulsar N160 could witness a slight bump in prices. The current model is available at a starting price of Rs 1.23 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). New Pulsar N160 will still be among the most affordable in the segment.It will rival TVS Apache RTR 160 4V that offers a comprehensive range of features such as ride modes, glide through technology and roto-petal disc brake with super-moto ABS. The bikes were offered at introductory pricing of Rs 1.38 lakh and 1.40 lakh respectively. Today, it is priced at Rs 1.44 lakh and Rs 1.45 lakh, respectively. All prices are ex-sh, Delhi.In just 6 months of launch, total sales have crossed 10,000 units. Bajaj claims that this is the fastest a 250cc motorcycle has achieved 10k sales. Other 250cc motorcycles on offer include the likes of KTM Duke 250, 250 ADV, Suzuki Gixxer 250, SF250, Yamaha FZ25, Fazer 250, Dominar 250, Husqvarna 250.Bajaj Pulsar Brand EffectPulsar is not the first 250cc motorcycle launched by Bajaj. They already have Dominar 250 on offer. They also sell 250cc motorcycles under their KTM and Husqvarna brand. But it was under the Pulsar brand that Bajaj managed to register this new sales milestone. Pulsar is a strong brand name which has a great market presence. Now, based on market feedback, Bajaj Auto has introduced a new gloss Blue colour for the Pulsar N250 naked street fighter bike and for its semi faired F250 counterpart.This is not the usual blue colour seen on other bikes such as Pulsar NS200, 220F, Pulsar 150, NS125, Platina 110ES and CT110, but is in a deeper and glossier shade of Blue. The new Gloss Blue colour scheme also covers a larger surface area extending to the front cowl and side fairing. It also makes its way onto the fuel tank, front fender and engine cowl going on to the rear tail section. The rest of the bike is in a contrasting shade of black. Its sporty appeal is further enhanced by decals on the front and sides.Pulsar N250 and F250 – Features, SpecsFeatures continue to include LED headlight and LED tail-lamps along with LED DRLs and LED turn indicators. It gets clip-on handlebars and a split seat set up.Bajaj Pulsar N250 and F250 draw power via a 249.07 cc, single cylinder, 2 valve, SOHC, oil cooled engine that offers 24.5 hp power at 8,750 rpm and 21.5 Nm torque at 6,500 rpm. The engine gets mated to a constant mesh 5 speed gearbox with slip and assist clutch. Suspension is via 37mm telescopic forks in the front and Nitrox monoshock suspension at rear while braking duties are handled by disc brakes measuring 300mm front and 230mm rear with single-channel ABS.
