Ford Has Finally Started Building the 2021 Bronco

The 2021 Ford Bronco has entered production and will reach reservation holders in the coming weeks. Production was delayed due to coronavirus-related supplier issues, and SUVs equipped with the off-road-focused Sasquatch package and seven-speed manual transmission are still delayed until next year. The Bronco is available in six trim levels starting at $29,995 for the two-door model. The arrival of the new Ford Bronco off-road SUV was delayed due to coronavirus-related supplier issues, but now production has started, Ford has announced. The two- and four-door Broncos are coming off the assembly line at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant and will reach customers who reserved them in the coming weeks.
These Broncos are for the 2021 model year and are filling more than 125,000 customer orders from reservation holders, Ford says. The 2022 model year will begin production at the end of the year, so future reservation holders will likely have to wait until next year. Still delayed until next year are Broncos ordered with the off-road-focused Sasquatch package, which adds 35-inch tires, heavy-duty Bilstein shock absorbers, and a manual transmission.

The Bronco debuted last summer in two- and four-door versions with removable doors and roofs, targeting the Jeep Wrangler. The Bronco comes standard with a 300-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. A seven-speed manual is available. There’s also a 330-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6, but it’s only available with the automatic. Pricing starts at $29,995 for the two-door model and $34,695 for the four-door, and six trim levels are available with varying equipment. There are also more than 200 factory-installed accessories available. Some Ford dealers will build dedicated Bronco showrooms, according to an earlier report.

2022 Subaru Forester Will Have a Fresher Look

The Subaru Forester will get some updates for 2022, as previewed by this global version. We can see new headlights, new wheels, and some other visual tweaks.More details on the U.S. version of the updated Forester should come later this year.Subaru will soon be rolling out an updated version of the Forester for 2022, and we’re getting a preview thanks to these images of the global version that the company posted on its Japanese website. The biggest changes appear on the front end, where the Forester features restyled headlights, a different grille, and a reshaped bumper.Subaru also says that it has added a few colors to the Forester range, although we don’t know if these will come to America, and updated the available upholstery choices. The EyeSight driver-assistance features may receive some updates as well.

We don’t anticipate any major changes to the Forester’s powertrain, a 2.5-liter flat-four with a CVT and all-wheel drive. Although we would like to see the turbocharged Forester XT model return with Subaru’s turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four, we’re not sure how likely that is given that Forester sales are strong with just the single engine choice.

The 2021 Forester currently starts at $25,845 and ranges up to $35,945 for a Touring model; we anticipate those prices will go up slightly for 2022, and the base model may gain some standard equipment. Look for more information on the U.S.-spec 2022 Subaru Forester to come later this year.

Next Maserati GranTurismo Coupe Shown in Prototype Form

Maserati has shared the first images of the new GranTurismo sports coupe prototype testing. The new GranTurismo will feature the first electric powertrain from the Italian automaker, though gas and hybrid versions will also be available. The new GranTurismo will debut next year, likely as a 2022 model, and the GranCabrio convertible will arrive shortly after. Maserati’s new GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible sports cars will introduce a new electric powertrain when the redesigned coupe arrives next year. The Italian automaker has begun testing prototypes of the new car, and the first images show that the new model will have a similar design language as the new MC20 mid-engine sports car.
The front-engine GranTurismo has a similar shape as the previous generation, with a long hood and sloped roofline common of grand tourers. Its long, vertical headlights look similar to the new MC20’s, and its low-mounted grille features vertical slats with the Maserati logo in the middle. The prototype shown has a set of aero wheels and an overhead photo shows a chrome-tipped exhaust, suggesting that this is not the fully electric variant. Maserati has also said that a GranCabrio convertible model will be added about a year after the debut of the coupe.

Maserati hasn’t shared many details on its first electric powertrain, but it has been testing it since early last year. We expect the new electric GranTurismo and GranCabrio to be quicker than the old model, which reached 60 mph in the mid-four-second range in Car and Driver testing. Maserati says that the new cars will also have gasoline-engine offerings, and we expect it could offer either a hybrid or a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. The previous-generation GranTurismo used a 4.7-liter V-8 engine. We’ll know more about the new Maserati GranTurismo sports coupe next year, and the GranCabrio convertible will arrive shortly after.

Forza Horizon 5 Will Be Set in Mexico, Out in November

New Forza and Gran Turismo games were teased during last year’s E3 gaming showcase, but the next generation of racing games has officially begun with Forza Horizon 5. The latest installation of the open world racing franchise boasts absurd graphics, massive scale, and, most important, a concrete release date. The game is set in Mexico, and the focus is on environmental diversity. Gameplay briefly shown during Micorsoft’s E3 presentation showed vast deserts, thick jungles, and an active volcano that the developers claim is the highest point of a Horizon game to date, but those are just the extremes of a map described during the presentation as the largest and most diverse in series history.

The gameplay trailer shows new features, including a new exploration-first campaign mode and an expanded arcade gameplay option that introduces new, Mario Kart–like mini games. The footage also focuses in on the immense detail of the world, from uniquely-crafted rocks to a recreation of a real Mexican sky captured in 12K resolution. This new level of graphical intensity is a unique strength, made possible by a powerful new generation of consoles that released last year.Although Mexico offers a more temperate climate than England, the setting of Forza Horizon 4, that game’s signature seasonal cycle feature will continue over to Horizon 5. Dynamic seasons will reset weekly, and the studio promises that “no two seasons will ever be the same.” Forza Horizon 5 is a console exclusive on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. It debuts on November 9.

Ferrari 812 Superfast Lives Up to Its Name, Tops 205 MPH on the Autobahn

You don’t need to be an expert to know that the Ferrari 812 Superfast is quick. It’s right there in the name, after all. A naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V-12 making 789 horsepower is enough to propel it to a top speed of 211 mph, according to the Italian manufacturer. When put to the test on a strip Germany’s unrestricted autobahn, it lives up to its namesake.

The AutoTopNL YouTube channel, known for its autobahn top speed run tests, got a chance to spend some time behind the wheel of an 812 Superfast painted in a stunning shade of blue. After a few encounters with traffic, the driver was able to max the car out at 331 kilometers per hour, or just over 205 mph. The car’s lack of muffling turbochargers means it also sounds great doing it, that V-12 able to rev all the way to 9000 rpm. Judging by the speed at which the 812 was able to reach 205 mph, it likely had more to go. It was nowhere near redline, and the driver was still accelerating at a decent clip when he let off the throttle. We’re curious to see just how fast the Superfast could go flat out, if given enough room. Something tells us 211 mph might be a conservative estimate.

Lego's Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 Is Full Size and Made of 400,000 Pieces

A promotional life-size version of the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 is made with 400,000 Lego elements. Lego used just 154 different pieces to make the Sián, including 20 unique components. The model uses a special UV coating paint to match the look of the commercially available Sián set Lego released last year.It took 15 people working 8660 hours to create and build the model, as well as an interactive digital version available in a virtual Lego workshop. In the Lego world, buying a model kit that roughly cost 10 cents per piece is often considered a good deal. Using that as a guide, we can calculate that it would cost $40,000 to re-create the life-size Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 that the Lego Group built as a special model for Automobili Lamborghini.

    Lamborghini

The brand collaboration used more than 400,000 Lego pieces to make a 4850-pound plastic Sián that is nearly identical to the real thing. Lamborghini said the Lego version “perfectly mirror[s] the car’s dimensions to the millimeter.” Both vehicles are 196 inches long, 83 inches wide, and 45 inches tall.

Before you go scraping together $40,000 to build your own massive Lego Sián, know that this will be difficult for two reasons. First, of the 154 different elements Lego used in this build, 20 of them were molded specifically to make a more realistic Sián. Second, this is Lego’s first large-scale model that uses a “paintbrush-effect UV color coating,” which was applied in Lamborghini’s paint shop. Also, a 1:8-scale Sián FKP 37 Lego Technic building kit was released last year, and that one costs $380, less than the $3 million price for an actual Sián.

    Lamborghini

Some of the unique pieces in the large model are Technic hexagons that were used to “[pay] homage to the six-sided shape that is integral to Lamborghini’s design language,” Lamborghini said. The Lego model also mimics the real car by matching the startup lighting signature with Technic pieces. Sián means “flash” or “lightning” in the Bolognese dialect, Lamborghini said.

Lamborghini said it took 15 people working 8660 hours to develop and build the full-size Sián. If you’d like to get a closer, digital look—including the brick-built steering wheel, dashboard, and racing seats—Lego also made a digital version for a virtual Lego workshop where anyone can “sit” in the driver’s seat while listening to the model’s designers talk about the creation process. In 2019, Lego built a full-size Bugatti Chiron out of over a million Technic pieces. That one took over 13,400 hours to put together, but perhaps the most amazing detail is that it had enough Lego gears (4032) and motors (2304) to actually move at up to 12 miles an hour.

Volkswagen’s New Multivan Is More Carlike, Comes in Plug-In-Hybrid Version

This is Volkswagen’s new Multivan for the Europe market, and it’s finished in a sweet two-tone paint job. The Multivan is built on VW’s MQB architecture and is available with a choice of two gas engines, a diesel, or a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. There are seven seats, and the five in the rear can be configured into different layouts. We often envy Europeans and their sports cars and hot hatches that legislative hurdles of the auto industry deny us. But this is a different vehicle we’d love the chance to buy, but almost certainly won’t get: Volkswagen’s stylish new Multivan.

    Volkswagen

Replacing the Caravelle van, which is based on the Europe-market Transporter, the new model has made the transition to a car platform and will exclusively be available as a passenger-carrying vehicle. The new Multivan sits on the familiar MQB architecture that underpins pretty much all of the Volkswagen Group’s small and mid-size offerings. VW says that there won’t be a commercial version, and all Multivans will have a full set of windows. (The work-grade T6 Transporter will be sold alongside it in Europe for several more years, before being replaced by a van on the same platform as the next Ford Transit.)The Multivan looks great in these first images. We’ve always been suckers for a two-tone Volkswagen bus. Two lengths will be available, with the regular 195.8 inches long and the extended version 203.7 inches, which is longer than most European parking spaces. To compare with U.S.-market vehicles, it fits between the Ford Transit work van, which starts at 217.8 inches in length, and the Transit Connect, the longest version of which measures 190.0 inches.

    Volkswagen

Seven seats will come standard, with the ability to move the five seats in back into different configurations or remove them entirely. The Multivan’s second row can also be turned 180 degrees to create conference-style seating. There is a central fold-up table that can be moved along a floor track between the different rows. This makes use of the increased space at the front of the passenger compartment from the lack of any floor console or gearshifter.

Engine options will include an entry-level 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 134 horsepower and a 2.0-liter TSI with 201 horsepower. Europeans will also get the chance to buy it with a 148-hp 2.0-liter diesel engine. The range-topping powertrain will be a plug-in hybrid combining a 1.4-liter engine and electric motor powered by a 13.0-kWh lithium-ion battery under the van’s floor. This will give a peak system output of 215 horsepower and will allow local trips under pure electric power. DSG transmissions will be standard on all versions: a six-speed for the hybrid and seven-speed for the other engines. The switch to the MQB platform and Volkswagen’s latest electronic architecture means the new Multivan will offer much more technology than any of its predecessors, with conventional buttons largely abolished from the center console. A 10.3-inch digital instrument display and a 10.0-inch central touchscreen will be standard, and the Multivan will also get Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive system, which includes radar cruise control with active lane keeping.Prices haven’t been released yet, but the new Multivan won’t be cheap. The current generation Caravelle starts at the equivalent of $44,500 in Germany, and you can bet Volkswagen will charge a supplement for the many extra features of the swish new model. U.S. sales look unlikely, although we will be able to take consolation with the retro-looking electric ID.Buzz Microbus. Eventually.
