Toyota GR GT3 Production Car Possibly Shown in Patent Images

The Toyota GR GT3 first appeared as a concept at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon, and now the company has submitted patent images for the vehicle in Europe. The images show a remarkably similar design to the concept, albeit without the gigantic rear wing.Toyota had previously said that it would build a running prototype by the year’s end, and also hinted that the GR GT3 is closely related to the future of Lexus’ GT3 racing program.Toyota has been on a performance-car tear recently. The legendary Supra nameplate was revived in 2020 and for 2023 will add a six-speed manual, a second generation of the affordable GR86 coupe arrived for 2022, and the even the humdrum Corolla hatchback earned a 300-horsepower GR performance trim. But it appears Toyota still has more up its sleeve when it comes to sports cars, with a recent patent filing in Europe revealing what could be a production version of the wild GR GT3 concept shown earlier this year at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

    EUIPO

The images, submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office, show a design largely similar to that of the concept from January. There is one glaring omission, however: the colossal rear wing. Instead, the car in the patent images makes do with the small spoiler behind the rear windshield, where the wing had been mounted on the concept. Still, the GR GT3 retains aggressive dive planes on the front bumper, a side-mounted exhaust pipe, an expansive rear diffuser, and the long-hood proportions.

    EUIPO

When the GR GT3 concept was unveiled, Toyota neglected to provide details about the powertrain but did say that a running prototype would arrive before the end of 2022. Later, in an interview with Toyota Racing Development president David Wilson at the Daytona 500, we learned that the GR GT3 concept could provide the basis for a future Lexus GT3 race car, with Wilson hinting that “it’s fairly safe to connect the dots.”

It’s unclear if the GR GT3 will spawn a roadgoing variant, and whether it will be badged as a Toyota or as the next Lexus RC, but the patent images certainly prove that Toyota is intent on expanding its sports-car armada. Wilson told us that the race car would likely arrive in the next couple of years, so it shouldn’t be long before we find out what the company is planning for this dramatically styled coupe.

2004 Volkswagen R32 Is Our Bring a Trailer Auction Pick of the Day

    • The 2004 Volkswagen R32 was the 240-hp all-wheel-drive alternative to the GTI before the Golf R.• We once described the R32 as an “instant autocrosser.”• This particular model sports 143,000 miles and is for sale at no reserve on Bring a Trailer, where the auction will end on July 5.The Volkswagen Golf has become a staple of the automotive world’s diet. Since 1974, the Golf has experienced eight generations and, in North America, multiple names (including Mk 1 through Mk 5 Rabbit generations). In 2004, Volkswagen decided to bring its muscled-up, all-wheel-drive version of the Golf to the U.S., and that was the R32.

    Bring a Trailer

This particular R32 has 143,000 miles on the clock, but you wouldn’t know it just by looking from across the parking lot. The car is painted in Black Magic Pearl over a black leather interior, and like all R32s, it has a six-speed manual transmission paired with 4Motion all-wheel drive.

This one has aftermarket Bilstein shocks as well as an aftermarket air intake. The listing shows that the radiator fan, fuel pump, and a rear spring bushing have all been replaced since 2019. The car also comes with a clean Carfax report and clean Florida title, though it should be noted that the car is being offered on dealer consignment in California.

    Bring a Trailer

The car does have a history of paintwork, with the hood being repainted in 2009 and extra paintwork being done to the driver’s side of the vehicle. Blemishes can be seen on the back of the car in photos and are mentioned in the listing. But the interior looks to be in very reasonable shape for a nearly 20-year-old car, although the black leather seats features quite a bit of cracking and even one tear in the driver’s-seat bolster. The headliner on the sunroof can also be seen as sagging.

    Bring a Trailer

If you are in the market for a small hatchback with all-wheel drive and a very usable 240 horsepower, the price of this R32 really hasn’t started to climb yet. With seven days to go until the auction ends July 5, the top bid sits at $7500.

Red Bull Announces RB17 Hypercar, Designed by Adrian Newey

    Red Bull Advanced Technologies

This sketch illustrates the form of a forthcoming Red Bull track-only hypercar. Designed by Adrian Newey, the new car is aiming to offer Formula 1–comparable performance. It will start reaching customers in 2025, priced at $4.1 million, and the run will be limited to 50 cars. Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing jointly developed the Valkyrie around the mission of creating a purchasable car that would offer performance comparable to an LMP1 racer. Which, in its track-only AMR Pro form, it certainly seems close to.But following the corporate divorce—after Aston acquired its own Formula 1 team—Red Bull is now planning its own hypercar future. Red Bull Advanced Technologies has just confirmed that it is working on another Adrian Newey design, another track-only beyond-hypercar and one that is aiming to bring a level of performance similar to that of a current Formula 1 car.

Beyond the project’s existence, the only other detail to have been released so far is this abstract sketch suggesting the car’s ultimate form, one in which a small bubble cockpit sits between heavily curved front and rear structures. We’re told that no more than 50 will be built, with a pretax price of $4.1 million at current exchange rates. Power will come from a hybridized twin-turbocharged V-8 engine set to make at least 1100 horsepower. And yes, to save you from looking, that is indeed more than the 1000 hp produced by the Valkyrie AMR Pro’s naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V-12. Advanced Ground EffectsUnsurprisingly, the RB17 will use a motorsport-style carbon-fiber tub featuring two seats. (A single-seater would doubtless be closer to the Formula 1 vision, but billionaires clearly want the chance to scare their friends.) It will be both engineered and constructed by Red Bull Advanced Technology in Milton Keynes, England, on the campus shared with the Formula 1 team. We’re told that as much work as possible will be done internally, with the RB17’s gearbox set to be made on site. The official release also promises the “most advanced ground-effects package available in a series production car.” Which is a very serious claim given that the T.50 produced by another of Formula 1’s great designers, Gordon Murray, has fan-assisted aero.As well as acquiring what will doubtless be one of the fastest cars on the planet, Red Bull promises that RB17 buyers will be heavily involved in the development program, spending time with the Red Bull Racing team and also experiencing it through simulators and, ultimately, on-track training. “The RB17 distills everything we know about creating championship-winning Formula 1 cars into a package that delivers extreme levels of performance in a two-seat track car,” Adrian Newey said in the official release. “Driven by our passion for performance at every level, the RB17 pushes design and technical boundaries far beyond what has been previously available to enthusiasts and collectors.”Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2025. Begging the question, how will Aston Martin respond? Will we see a Valkyrie AMR Pro Plus?

Ford Files Trademark for 'Mustang Dark Horse,' Could Indicate Name of Black Accent Package

Ford announced a black accent package for the 2023 Mustang on Twitter June 1 and opened up online submissions to name the package. A trademark application for “Mustang Dark Horse” was filed in the United States on June 22, as well as in other countries. While there has been no official announcement yet, the trademark could indicate that the winning submission for the black accent package has been selected. The Mustang is getting a facelift in 2024, but until then, in seemingly a final farewell to the sixth generation, Ford has announced a black accent package for the 2023 model year that may possibly be called “Mustang Dark Horse.” The announcement was first made on Twitter June 1, when Ford solicited submissions for the yet-to-be-named package through an online form.
This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The form has since closed, with submissions being taken till 8 p.m. on June 7, but, as of yet, Ford has not announced the winner from over 25,000 submissions. However, on June 22, the company filed a trademark for “Mustang Dark Horse” in the United States and other countries. Could that be it? Plenty in the replies of the original Tweet suggested “Dark Horse” or a variation thereof, and it would be an apt name for the pony car’s blackout edition.

    USPTO

Other popular suggestions in the replies included “Black Stallion,” “Midnight,” and “Ghost,” but none of those have trademarks filed for them. Not much is known about the package details, but based on tweets from the Blue Oval, it will at least include black wheels and a black badge.

Whatever the package ends up being, it’s clear that Ford has succeeded in building hype for it. And with the twilight of the sixth-generation Mustang just beyond the horizon, the likely Dark Horse package could be a handsome sendoff.

Goodwood Record-Setting McMurtry Spéirling to Spawn Roadgoing Car

British startup McMurtry Automotive told Autocar at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed that it will build a roadgoing version of its Spéirling track car.The Spéirling made headlines this weekend when it set a new lap record at the Goodwood Hill Climb, running the course in just 39.08 seconds. The approximately 1000-hp EV measures a mere 126 inches long and uses a pair of turbines to keep it glued to the road. Before this weekend, McMurtry Automotive was a relative unknown. But the startup from Gloucestershire, England, burst into the spotlight on Sunday by setting a new record for the quickest run up the famed hill-climb at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. With former IndyCar and Formula 1 driver Max Chilton behind the wheel, the company’s first vehicle, the Spéirling, blitzed the 1.16-mile course in 39.08 seconds, displacing the electric Volkswagen I.D. R as the outright record holder. Now, according to Autocar, the tiny British firm is planning to create a road-legal version of its pint-sized electric missile.

    McMurtry

The Spéirling was first revealed at the 2021 Festival of Speed, and two key factors helped it set such a quick lap time this year: its diminutive size and two fans that suck the McMurtry to the road. The single-seater measures just 126 inches long, almost 20 inches shorter than a Chevy Spark. Combined with a prolific use of carbon fiber, this allows the Spéirling to weigh less than 2205 pounds. McMurtry hasn’t given a specific power output but claims about 1 hp for every 2.2 pounds, with an electric motor at each rear wheel fed by a 60.0-kWh battery. This U-shaped battery is integrated into the carbon-fiber tub, and McMurtry says it permits between 30 and 60 minutes of flat-out driving. But the real party pieces are the Spéirling’s two electric turbines that sit behind the cockpit. These fans slurp air from beneath the car and spit it out of central rear exhaust vents, with McMurtry claiming the fans can provide about 4400 pounds of downforce at a standstill. Along with keeping the Spéirling glued to the road, the fans produce 120 dB of noise, creating a dramatic “whoosh” sound as the car blasts past.

    McMurtry

While the Spéirling is currently designed for track use, McMurtry wants to homologate it for the road. Managing director Thomas Yates told Autocar, “We want to provide something that you can drive through the centre of London, and then take onto a track.” Still, the Spéirling will be compromised—Yates conceded that “it will never be the most comfortable over speed bumps,” for example. McMurtry says that while the powertrain will remain unchanged, the aerodynamics will need to be toned down for the roadgoing version, with the fans only operating in a track mode, and the Spéirling will need to add headlights and windshield wipers.

The road legalization process is still in its early stages, but McMurtry only aims to build a handful of units with a price in the seven-figure range. The company is also already plotting its next vehicle, with plans for something even smaller than the already miniature Spéirling.

BMW Teases Modern 3.0 CSL That Looks Gnarly, Has a Manual

The CEO of BMW’s M division, Frank van Meel, confirmed the creation of a new 3.0 CSL with an Instagram post Monday morning. BMW Blog posted today that the car, based on the M4 CSL, is expected to be built in an ultra-limited edition and cost nearly $800,000.It will reportedly make 600 horsepower and come in rear-wheel-drive only and with a manual transmission. If you aren’t already taken aback by BMW’s controversially large grilles, wait until you see that face on a car that resembles a full-sleeve tattoo created in the pit of a rock festival at 3 a.m. But if you look underneath and recognize the inspiration from classic M cars, what you find is pretty incredible.Frank van Meel, the CEO of BMW’s M division, released a teaser this morning of the upcoming 3.0 CSL. The arrival of the new CSL will cap off the M division’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, which have already seen a number of exciting new M cars such as the M3 Touring that we sadly won’t receive stateside.

BMWBlog reported today that the automaker will build 50 of the new CSL and that it’s expected to make roughly 600 horsepower, or 57 more than the M4 CSL it is based on. It will also reportedly cost the equivalent of $794,000 at current exchange rates. The 3.0 CSL is expected to share the M4 CSL’s 3.0-liter inline-six engine. While that engine makes an impressive 543 horsepower in the M4, it is expected to produce roughly 600 hp in the new car. The loud livery somehow works, especially because the kidney grille is less overpowering than the one on the M4 CLS on which the car is based. In back, there are two spoilers, including one mounted on the roof. Inspection of the livery shows off a few hints as to what we can expect. The paint treatment includes “I LIKE IT RARE”written across the hood and “6MT FTW” printed on the rear.It may be tarted up, but it’s still an incredible track machine in that it is an upgraded version of the M4 CSL, which is itself an upgraded version of the M4. There’s every reason to believe BMW when it calls its very expensive and very special 3.0 CSL “INSANELY EPIC.”

Mini Sends a Puzzle to Customers Whose New Cars Aren't Ready Yet

With supply-chain issues delaying car deliveries for many customers, Mini has turned to a creative solution to satiate its eagerly waiting customers: a puzzle. The “We’re-working-hard-to-get-you-you-car, waiting-is-the-worst, in-the-meantime-happy-puzzling, Mini Puzzle,” or Not So Mini puzzle for short, will be sent to customers to complete while they wait for their cars. Some customers will receive a life-size puzzle, while others will receive a normal-size puzzle. If you’re waiting for your new car to be delivered and have an extra spot in your garage, the obvious next step is to put together a car-sized puzzle in the empty space. At least, that’s what Mini thinks.Like the rest of the automotive industry, the maker of lilliputian cars is experiencing supply-chain issues leading to car-delivery delays. Unlike the rest of the industry, however, Mini is addressing those issues with a puzzle. It announced Friday that it would be sending life-size and regular-size puzzles featuring an image of the distinctive cars to customers waiting for the delivery of their vehicle.

The puzzle, known officially as THE WE’RE-WORKING-HARD-TO-GET-YOU-YOUR-CAR, WAITING-IS-THE-WORST, IN-THE-MEANTIME-HAPPY-PUZZLING, MINI PUZZLE, has a name worthy of a Fall Out Boy song title in its length. However, the brand has generously given everyone permission to call it the Not So Mini puzzle instead. The Not So Mini puzzle will come in two sizes, with select customers receiving a life-sized version, perfect for filling the Mini-sized emptiness in their garage. Others on the waitlist will receive a more kitchen-table-appropriate puzzle. Still, regardless of the size of the puzzle the customer receives, Mini hopes that this initiative will “surprise and delight” them, and it plans to feature new owners and their puzzles, both complete and in-progress, on its social media channels.Mini spokesperson Rah Mahtani said in a statement, “People buy a Mini because of its cheeky and fun-to-drive spirit, so we wanted to give owners something fun to do while they wait to get behind the wheel of their new Mini.”Even though the brand admits that most customers would rather have a leather steering wheel in their hands than a puzzle, it wants to turn an unfortunate reality into a unique experience in the meantime. After all, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, and when life gives you automotive supply-chain puzzles, you make a real puzzle.

2023 Ford F-150 Heritage Edition Revives Old-School Paint Scheme

The 2023 Ford F-150 lineup adds a Heritage Edition to celebrate the nameplate’s 75th birthday. The Heritage Edition revives an old-school, two-tone paint scheme and includes some unique interior bits. The Heritage Edition is only available on XLT models, with pricing to be announced in mid-July.The Ford F-150 was born in 1948 and has gone on to become one of the best-selling vehicles in America. Now, Ford is celebrating the popular pickup truck’s 75th birthday with the new 2023 F-150 Heritage Edition. However, instead of commemorating the F-150’s milestone with high-performance upgrades or unique features, the special edition simply brings the revival of an old-school paint scheme. It’s essentially a two-tone look, but the two primary colors are split into three separate sections. One of the colors covers the truck’s middle area and the other color covers the roof and its pillars as well as the bumpers and lower bodywork.

    Ford

The F-150 Heritage Edition can be had in five different color configurations. There’s Race Red between Carbonized Gray, Atlas Blue between Agate Black, Antimatter Blue between Carbonized Gray, Avalanche between Agate Black, and Area 51 between Agate Black. Unfortunately, Ford doesn’t offer any yellow or green hues that might recall funkier F-150s from the ’70s and ’80s.

    Ford

The inside of the Heritage Editions doesn’t include much to celebrate other than a few subtle details. The only cabin color is gray with black trim, but the seats feature distinct inserts and the cover of the center console is embossed with “Since 1948 F-Series Heritage Edition.” The only other mentions of the truck’s anniversary are logos that say “75 Years” on the center console, on the top of the windshield, and as part of the infotainment system’s startup animation. The commemorative appearance package is only available on XLT models. Ford says the ’23 F-150 Heritage Edition will start production this fall, with pricing to be announced when orders open in the middle of July.
