Both new Thar and XUV700 have already received an overwhelming response. Other upcoming launches include new-gen Scorpio, Bolero and XUV300 and 5-door Thar. Enthusiasts are also eager to know how Mahindra will tackle the EV space.Mahindra new EVs detailsThe EV race is expected to intensify phenomenally in coming years. Just like other carmakers, Mahindra will be looking to take an early lead in this space. The company already has E-Verito, but it hasn’t been able to establish itself as a popular electric car. To ensure a better market response, Mahindra will be pushing a more aggressive EV strategy in the near future.It includes three new electric SUVs, which are expected to be launched during the period 2024 to 2027. These will be unveiled in July 2022. Part of the company’s ‘Born Electric Vision’, these electric SUVs have been designed by UK-based entity Mahindra Advance Design Europe (MADE).It is currently headed by Pratap Bose, who had earlier worked at Tata Motors for around 14 years. He is credited with the design of several successful models such as Nexon, Harrier and new Safari. One of these will be a compact SUV. It will be different from the electric version of XUV300 that was recently spotted on road tests. Second EV will be a midsize SUV, most likely the electric version of existing XUV700. There’s a strong possibility for this, as XUV700 platform supports EV powertrain.Third EV product from Mahindra could be the XUV900 coupe. It will be the first four-door SUV coupe in the company’s portfolio. As far as design is concerned, XUV900 will be unlike any other Mahindra SUV we have seen thus far.Mahindra EVs common featuresGonig by the teasers, it is apparent that Mahindra’s new electric SUVs will share quite a few styling bits. It includes C-shaped LED lights at front and rear. There will be variations, but the core design philosophy will be largely the same for all three electric SUVs.Mahindra Electric SUV ConceptAs already seen with XUV700, a number of hi-tech features including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can be expected with Mahindra’s electric SUVs. XUV700 comes with features such as front collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, smart pilot assist, driver drowsiness detection, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, and traffic sign recognition.       Tork Kratos R Electric Motorcycle – First Ride Review

      Tork Kratos R ReviewTork Kratos and Kratos R are meant for consumers looking for a premium offering in the electric mobility spaceAfter being in development for years, Tork Motors finally launched its much ambitious electric motorcycle named Kratos last month. The Pune-based EV manufacturer has introduced two variants of the battery-powered motorcycle- standard and a slightly more powerful R trim. We recently got an opportunity to test the latter and check how it performs in the real world.Will it be able to create a niche for itself amongst the plethora of other two-wheelers cropping up in the market in recent times even though most of the offerings in the current two-wheeler space are scooters? Will it be able to challenge conventional IC engine motorcycles which are still going strong? Let us answer these and a few more questions through our first ride impression.Tork Kratos Review – Design & QualityBased on the pre-production Tork T6X prototype, Kratos is claiming to be the first indigenously developed electric motorcycle in India. This essentially means that everything in the motorcycle, barring the battery cells, including the electric motor, battery pack and its casing, running gear, electronics, etc., have been designed, conceptualised and manufactured in India.Starting with its design, Kratos doesn’t stray too far from the T6X prototype although there are substantial differences to tell them apart. For starters, it gets a V-shaped headlamp cluster but the LED internals inside Kratos give the electric bike a Transformers-like appearance. The curves and edges along the body panels give the motorcycle a sharp look.Tork Kratos R ReviewFurther, a raised tail section along with split-style seats and split grab rails lend it a much-needed sportiness to its closet. While the muscular tank accentuates its aggressive nature, the bulkiness of the huge electric motor placed underneath takes some sheen off the otherwise beautiful-looking Kratos. Overall, Kratos is one handsome motorcycle that is bound to catch enough attention.However, that doesn’t necessarily translate to the bike’s fit and finish. Quality of switchgear, mirrors and even the instrument console were found to be substandard at best and could do well with some improvements. While quality of brake levers aren’t bad, metallic finish levers instead of plastic units would do justice to this premium offering. The bike also misses out on a proper metallic crash guard or a belly pan which could prevent scraping the battery pack.Tork Kratos Review – ErgonomicsFootpegs on Kratos are slightly rear-set which translates to a slightly committed yet comfortable riding stance thanks to a taller handlebar. The seat itself is very well cushioned with the right amount of padding. The pillion seat also looks decently spacious enough although we couldn’t test it with a pillion behind. An accessible saddle of 785mm would make this motorcycle comfortable for riders of most heights.Tork Kratos R ReviewTork Kratos Review – FeaturesBeing a premium offering, Tork has loaded Kratos, especially the top-spec Kratos R, with very impressive equipment. It gets a digital instrument console that displays a wide range of information but has some visibility issues under direct sunlight and needs a serious upgrade. Apart from the three ride modes, you get reverse mode to pull yourself out of a tricky parking space.The faux fuel tank gets some space to store one’s knick-knacks but isn’t big enough to store even a half-face helmet. It also gets a USB charger inside the storage. The biggest highlights from its feature list are the connectivity options that offer remote functionalities such as geo-fencing, find my vehicle, motor walk assist, track mode via Bluetooth, crash alert, etc.Tork Kratos ReviewUnfortunately, we weren’t able to test any of them since our test bike was a pre-production model with a Beta version of the software sans all the features mentioned above. Other notable features on offer include in-built navigation, all-LED illumination, regenerative braking, hazard lights, OTA updates, Active throttle control, smart charge analysis, guide me home headlights and more.Tork Kratos Review – Ride & HandlingTork has been clear since the initial phase of its development that this bike will offer a sporty riding experience. For some parts, this does hold true with its slightly stiff suspension setup which offers sure-footedness while on the go. However, as a side effect, you do feel firmness in the ride quality when you move across a pothole or a sharp bump.Tork Kratos ReviewWhile you do wish the ride was a tad bit more comfortable, it isn’t as harsh and unnerving as a sports bike and it’s something that one can get used to. The positioning of the battery does provide stability to the bike but it also makes it a little tricky while manoeuvring through congested traffic. This would also result in the rider putting an extra effort while leaning into a sharp corner, especially on a track.The bike rides on 17-inch front and rear wheels that are shod with MRF Zapper which provide decent enough grip. However, a thicker front tyre instead of 90/80 section would have inspired more confidence in the rider. While brakes felt adequate enough during moderate speeds, they missed out on a sharper bite required to bring a vehicle to a halt from a high speed.Tork Kratos ReviewSlamming the brake levers too hard might result in locking up the wheels which could be a recipe for disaster. Hence, at this price point, especially for the top-spec Kratos R, Tork must upgrade to an ABS setup for a safer ride experience.Performance & RangeKratos R comes with three ride modes namely- Eco, City and Sport with different levels of performance and range attached to each of them. The bike always starts on the Eco mode as default before the rider changes the mode through the switchgear. In Eco mode, performance is adequate but definitely doesn’t excite and the active throttle control (ATC) starts intruding once you reach 45 kmph.Tork Kratos ReviewWe spent most of our time in the Sport mode extracting most of the performance and in this mode, the ATC was the least intrusive. Unlike most EVs, performance in Kratos R is in line with a conventional petrol-powered two-wheeler which gradually develops power. There isn’t a mad rush of torque generally associated with EVs but the surge is felt linearly as one pulls the throttle.A top speed of 80kmph was reached on a busy highway stretch beyond which the bike felt a little wobbly. Pulling the throttle hard did take an effect on the indicated range on the console but while riding through traffic the range stayed stagnant for a long duration. This suggests that regenerative braking was working properly.Tork Kratos ReviewWe rode the top-spec Kratos which comes with a stronger 9kW motor and dishes out a peak torque of 38 Nm. Tork claims a real-world range of 120km in Eco mode which drops to around 70km in Sport mode. But since we got to ride the bike only for a short duration we aren’t able to confirm the exact range in a real-world scenario.Price & OfferingsThe two variants of the electric bike- Kratos and Kratos R are priced at Rs 1.08 lakh and Rs 1.23 lakh (both ex-showroom, Pune) that are inclusive of FAME II and state subsidies. Apart from the extra bit of performance, consumers opting for the top-spec Kratos R benefit from the free access to the charging network established (or will be established) by Tork across the various centres for two years.Tork Kratos ReviewAlso, the standard Kratos misses out on a fast-charging capability offered in the top-spec trim. While Kratos is available in a single white paint scheme, Kratos R gets three additional options in the form of blue, red and black. The Pune-based EC manufacturer is also offering a warranty for a period of 3 years or 40,000km as standard on both variants.The company will be opting for a dealership model starting with Pune and then spreading to Tier 1 metros like Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad. Tork is also promising doorstep services which we are yet to receive details about. It is planning to tie with local entities to set up a widespread charging network that will be further expanded to smaller centres.Tork Kratos ReviewVerdictKratos R is able to score high on most aspects but there isn’t escaping the fact that refinement is missing in this pre-production model. The motorcycle has small yet noticeable drawbacks which can hinder one’s ownership or riding experience. However, these drawbacks aren’t that glaring as seen in some other modern EVs that have come out in the recent past.Good thing, though, that Tork has taken all feedback into account and promised to make the final production-spec model an overall better package. If you could look past the small niggles mentioned above, there is plenty to like about the motorcycle. However, it will be too soon to recommend one before all the rough edges are ironed out. More

The OEM has been showcasing electric trucks and buses at the Auto Expos for nearly a decade now.So, the technology is production ready and is just waiting for the market to become conducive. We think a heavy-duty Tata electric truck is not too far from seeing the light of day. Our bright in-house design specialist Pratyush Rout presents you his take on how a future electric prime mover from the Indian stalwart would look like, and we love it.Given that heavy-duty trucks, in general, are used for long-haul applications, an appeal of a 100% electric truck is limited to certain niche sectors, at least until the battery tech and charging infrastructure attain a high-level of maturity.Future Tata Electric Truck – RenderSo, under these circumstances, starting with premium offerings and then gradually moving towards mid-premium and mass market segments makes better business sense. What you see here is a speculative rendering of what could be Tata’s flagship electric truck.The design language is a posher and futuristic take on the brand’s Prima family of mid-premium heavy commercial vehicles. The bright colour options just add to the style, not to mention improves safety by enhancing visibility.The low-slung cabin with smooth surfaces make for good aerodynamic performance which will ultimately translate into better overall range. Low-slung LED headlamps, prominent black pseudo grille, and high-mounted cabin conform to world-class truck design standards.Future Tata Electric Truck – RenderPossible ApplicationHeavy-duty electric trucks may find their way into sectors like mining, transportation of over-dimensional cargo over short to medium distance, last mile transportation, etc. Some countries are also experimenting on electrified truck lanes for long distance transportation.Hydrogen fuel-cell technology is also emerging as a viable alternative source of energy for commercial vehicles. With such a significant technological shift, the design and market positioning of the product will also evolve.Future Tata Electric Truck – RenderThe future electric trucks will no longer be rolling out of production lines as ladder-frame skeletons, to be finished by third party fabricators. They will boast well-equipped factory-built cabins with enhanced safety and a comprehensive range of ADAS features to reduce the driver’s workload. Tesla showed us a glimpse of their upcoming Semi electric truck with all the latest driver assist features. Other OEMs are likely to equip their future electric trucks with similar advanced tech.From the fleet owner’s perspective, electric trucks could come at a much higher investment compared to their conventional diesel engined counterparts but advantages include lower running and maintenance costs.       New MG Electric Car Teased Ahead Of Debut In 2022

While ZS EV is already a strong player in the emission-free space, the Chinese-owned British brand will launch some more models in the near future to strengthen its presence in electric mobility.One such model has been teased by MG recently on its social media handles. The short teaser video shows glimpses of the upcoming MG electric car which is yet unnamed. By the looks of it, the company might be launching yet another battery-powered crossover after ZS. However, unlike ZS, this vehicle is expected to be a brand new, born electric car.New MG electric car teasedThe teaser shows the upcoming EV wrapped in an orange paint scheme. Highlights such as broad front fenders, high bonnet line, high ground clearance and a flat-ish tailgate indicate the company has opted for the SUV route. In the caption, MG says that this electric car has been developed keeping in mind the needs of consumers in the UK.Hence, in all likelihood, this upcoming electric car will be launched in the UK and other developed markets in Europe. The carmaker has also revealed that the battery-powered vehicle will be making its global debut by the fourth quarter of 2022 which means towards the end of this year.[embedded content][embedded content]Exterior Styling HighlightsOther visual highlights revealed from the teaser include black plastic cladding on door sills, big wheel arches, 17-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels, strong shoulder lines, ORVMs with gloss black finish and a sloping roofline with a blacked-out glass roof. At rear, the EV features Y-shaped LED wraparound taillamps that meet the MG logo at the centre of the tailgate.The social media post also mentions that this upcoming electric car will measure 4,300mm in length which puts it in the same league as Hyudai Creta and Kia Seltos. It is, in fact, 14mm shorter than the current ZS EV. The images also confirm the presence of a camera on the ORVM which suggests that a 360-degree camera could be part of this package.Expected Powertrain SpecsWhile official details are yet awaited, this electric car teased in social media could be the brand’s new EV- MG 4. Upon its launch, MG 4 is expected to rival other upcoming entry-level electric SUVs like Kia EV6 and Volkswagen ID.3. This electric SUV is expected to feature a 61.1 kWh battery pack powering an electric motor to generate a maximum output of 154 bhp and 260 Nm of torque.This powertrain is expected to return a range of around 400km on a single charge. In all probability, this SUV is not likely to arrive on Indian shores anytime soon. In India, MG will be launching a facelifted ZS EV with more options as far as battery packs are concerned. However, Hyundai’s sister concern, Kia Motors currently has 0 offering for the electric car users in India. While overall EV PV sales in the country are low, the segment itself is growing rapidly. Home-grown automaker, Tata Motors currently dominates the space and is expected to be joined by Mahindra soon.Kia Electric Car IndiaTo cater to this evolving market, Kia seems to be planning on bringing in the EV6 to India. As a first step, it has filed for 5 trademarks. These include EV6, EV6 Earth, EV6 Water, EV6 Air and EV6 Light.It is an indication that plans for induction of the EV6 in the Indian market are ON and most probably the electric crossover will be launched in 4 different trims, namely Earth, Water, Air and Light. Interestingly, in international markets, the EV6 is sold in 3 different trims, namely Light, Wind and GT-Line.The EV6 is based upon Kia’s E-GMP platform, which it shares with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The platform happens to be an EV-specific platform and is expected to spawn more products in the future. It must be noted that earlier reports have suggested that Hyundai has been contemplating on bringing in the Ioniq 5 to the country.Kia EV6 trademarked in IndiaKia EV6 PowertrainTalking about the EV6, the entry level trims get a 58 kWh battery pack which powers a rear-mounted motor. The setup can dish-out 167 bhp and 349 Nm of peak torque and can do 0-100 kmph in 8 seconds. It has a restricted top speed of 185 kmph while the overall driving range happens to be 373 km.Kia also offers a larger battery pack option, which is rated at 77.4 kWh. It powers a rear-mounted motor which can churn out 225 bhp and 349 Nm of max torque and has the ability to let the crossover do a 0-100 kmph in just 7.2 seconds.Kia EV6 AWD option uses a dual-motor setup which has a combined power output of 320 bhp and 604 Nm. This combo helps the EV6 to do a 0-100 kmph run in just around 5 seconds while has its top speed limited to 188 kmph, electronically. With this larger battery set-up the range for the RWD variant happens to be 500 km while the AWD variant can last for 441 kms in a single charge.Kia EV6 logo trademarked in IndiaKia EV6 FeaturesBeing a Kia, the crossover gets a ton of creature comfort features. The list includes a 12.3 inch instrument cluster, 8-way power adjustable driver seat, a 12.3 inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charger and much more.For international markets, the EV6 also gets multiple advanced features like Level 2 Highway Autonomy driving feature, Highway Driving Assist 2. Interestingly, the electric SUV recently received a facelift for the European markets. 2022MY brought in minor updates to the exteriors and the powertrain too.2022 Hyundai IONIQ5 In IndiaThe 2022 Ioniq 5 draws power from a 77.4 kWh battery pack, which is slightly larger than the 72.6 kWh battery set-up which was found on the 2021 model. The pre-facelift model had a claimed range of 485 kms however the new model should be capable to cross the 500 kms mark easily.Other new features on the 2022 Ioniq 5 include introduction of optional digital mirrors, which were initially offered only in South Korean market earlier. The 2 optional mirror sets include a Digital Centre Mirror (DCM) which provides an unobstructed, panoramic rear facing view of the car. The Digital Side Mirrors (DSM) reduce air resistance and provides the driver with an enhanced rear view even in bad weather. The 2022 model has also received Smart Frequency Dampers (SFD), which improves ride comfort and handling.2022 Hyundai IONIQ5 In IndiaCurrently, there are reports which suggest that Hyundai might bring the Ioniq 5 to the country, mostly via the CBU route. Being a CBU, the Ioniq 5 might be priced at a premium, thanks to the duties and taxes. If brought to the country, the Ioniq 5 will be launched with the intent to strengthen Hyundai’s presence in the Electric mobility segment and not essentially as a number churner for the OEM’s top-line.Hyundai India’s Way AheadHyundai India is currently under considerable pressure as its position as the second largest OEM of the country is under threat. Homegrown automaker, Tata Motors has been posting record increase in its sales and eyeing the coveted number 2 spot which Hyundai has maintained for the last decade or so.Hyundai India has some aggressive plans to bring in multiple updates to its line-up this year, through which it would want to hold on to the second spot. The highlight seems to be on the C and inverted C, in a way forming X – implying that these could be christened as some form of XUV. It is likely that one of these SUVs teased, is the much awaited XUV900 coupe, in all electric form.[embedded content][embedded content]Mahindra XUV900 – Company’s First 4 door SUV CoupeMahindra XUV900 will be the company’s first four-door SUV Coupe. It may be recalled that Mahindra had shown off the idea of an SUV coupe at the 2016 Auto Expo called Mahindra Aero concept. At that time it borrowed inspiration from the XUV500.It will be slotted above the XUV700, borrowing inspiration from the XUV Aero concept. The XUV900 is designed at the Mahindra Automotive Design Europe studio. It will get a sloping coupe like roofline, muscular bumper, faux diffusers and horizontally positioned tail lamps.Mahindra is planning to develop a range of premium electric SUVs under an all-new EV sub-brand. The new range of electric SUVs could cost as low as Rs 15 lakhs and go up to Rs 40 lakhs. The most affordable of these could be called – XUV400 (eXUV300), followed by electric XUV700 and top of the line electric XUV900 coupe.New Mahindra Electric SUVsXUV900 will combine the practicality of an SUV in terms of space while handling and style with that of a two door coupe. While the XUV Aero concept sported suicide doors, the new XUV900 is likely to get the more conventional front-hinged door setup.The second of the list is likely to be XUV700 electric. Of all the Mahindra cars currently on sale, it is the XUV700 which is the newest. It is equipped with a platform that is EV compatible.XUV300 Electric – XUV400Mahindra XUV300 electric will be known as XUV400 upon launch. It has also been spied on test. The prototype spied in the images flaunts the same boxy design as the current XUV300 with a flat roofline, a raked C-pillar and a tailgate-mounted spoiler. The charging port is seen mounted on the front left fender. The battery-powered XUV300 will be based on the same MESMA 350 platform which will underpin the upcoming eKUV100. The Pune-based EV startup is responsible for developing powertrains, battery management systems and other EV-related technologies for Tata Motors as well as other OEMs.While massive push has been given to development and manufacture of new electric vehicles, retrofitting of old IC engine-powered models is also gaining momentum in recent times. ElectraEV is also working on the latter in order to expand its reach wider. Recently, the firm took to social media to declare a retrofitting of an EV powertrain into an IC engine car.Tata Nano Electric – Retrofitted PowertrainThe retrofitting was performed on a Nano which belongs to none other than Ratan Tata himself. The EV startup also posted a picture of the business tycoon standing alongside his custom-built Nano Electric which wore a green license plate.Ratan Tata with his Nano ElectricNo cosmetic updates have been carried out in the stock Nano. The post also mentions that the electric Nano has been retrofitted with a powertrain featuring a 72V battery pack. No other details regarding specs of the electric motor and performance figures have been shared by ElectraEV.ElectraEV offers a wide range of battery options ranging from 48V to 750V. All these Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) packs from the firm have been tested as per AIS 048 and certified by ARAI. The LIB packs can operate at a wide range of temperatures ranging from sub-zero to 55-degree celsius (drive).Other detailsBattery packs from EV use force chill air-cooled technology and integrate through an intelligent programmable BMS utilizing CAN communication network. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery packs from ElectraEV currently in use in India extend from 16.6 kWh to 21.6 kWh, thus enabling 200 to 213 KM driving range on a full charge. The electrified Nano should also offer a range of around 200km on a single charge.These battery packs are currently used in Neo and Xpres-T EV, the latter is essentially a Tigor EV specifically designed for fleet consumers. The facelifted Tigor EV now utilises a more premium and more powerful Ziptron technology which is also used in Tata Nexon EV. Hopefully, this will set the right precedent for people to retrofit their old IC engine-powered vehicles with new electric powertrains. More
