Top 10 Two Wheeler Exports Oct 2020 – Boxer, Star City, Pulsar, Apache Lead

    Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS
In a welcome development for two-wheeler manufacturers, exports have registered double digit growth in October 2020

A total of 3,73,875 units were exported, which is YoY gain of 25.98%. Exports during the corresponding period last year stood at 2,96,772 units. The numbers reveal that market conditions have improved in most of the key global locations where made in India two-wheelers are exported.
    Bajaj Boxer tops the list
While the domestic market is dominated by Hero Splendor and Honda Activa, the most exported two-wheeler is Bajaj Boxer. It has retained the top spot for a long time. In October, a total of 1,23,778 units were exported. This is an impressive YoY gain of 40.50%, as compared to 88,096 units exported in October last year.
Boxer was once available in the domestic market in 100 cc and 150 cc variants, and it had good demand initially. However, the 100 cc variant was later replaced with CT 100. The 150 cc variant was also discontinued. Boxer’s most important export markets are countries in Africa, Latin America and some South East Asian countries.
At number two is TVS Star City with exports of 52,776 units in October. YoY gain is 74.70%, as compared to 30,209 units exported in October last year. TVS exports its two-wheelers to more than sixty countries across Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Europe.
    Two Wheeler Exports Oct 2020
At third spot is Bajaj Pulsar with 32,406 units exported in October. YoY gain is 32.52%, as compared to 24,454 units exported in October last year. The pulsar range is popular in domestic market as well and it is the top selling brand in Bajaj’s portfolio.
At number four is Bajaj CT with 16,284 units exported in October. The motorcycle has registered negative YoY growth of -32.11%, as compared to 23,986 units exported in October last year. Next in the list is Bajaj Discover with 15,916 units exported in October. YoY gain is 10.77%, as compared to 14,369 units exported in October last year.
Other most exported two wheelers in top ten
At number six is TVS Apache, which is another popular product in the domestic market. Apache exports in October stood at 13,058 units. Numbers have more than doubled, as compared to 5,991 units exported in October last year.

Ather 450X Electric Scooter Ahmedabad – 1st Owner Takes Delivery

Ather 450x 1st delivery of Ahmedabad by Kataria Green
As promised, Ather Energy has commenced deliveries of its 450X electric scooter in Ahmedabad

As may be recalled, the company had started operations in Ahmedabad in October via its dealer partner Kataria Group. This was part of the company’s plan to expand operations across the country. Ather has also expanded its footprint to Mumbai and Pune. Other cities that will be covered soon include Delhi-NCR, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Kochi and Coimbatore. Ather already has presence in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.
    Ather 450X specs
Ather Energy had started out with its 450 electric scooter, which has now been discontinued. 450X works as its replacement and comes with several new features and updates.
Powering the scooter is a 2.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack connected to a 6kW PMS motor. With 26 Nm of torque, Ather 450X can effortlessly zip through city streets. The battery is IP 67 rated water resistant and dust proof and comes with 3 year warranty.
Users can choose from ride modes of Eco, Ride, Sports and Warp. Max range is available with Eco mode at 85 km on a full charge. Ride and Sports mode allow 70 km and 60 km, respectively. Warp mode is built for max performance.

According to the company, this is true range that users can get in real life driving conditions. In a laboratory environment, Ather 450X range is much higher at 116 km. Many users have reported achieving more than the stated range, which is testament to the claims made by the company.
    Ather Grid
To make refuelling just as convenient and hassle free as gasoline scooters, Ather is focusing on expanding recharging stations in cities. Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is at a nascent stage in the country, which is a key reason for not buying electric vehicles. An increase in the number of charging stations in a city is expected to take care of range anxiety that people usually have about electric vehicles. It will also motivate people to make the switch to electric.

In cities where Ather is operation, the company is building an extensive network of charging stations. The locations are determined in such a way that a charging station is never more than 4 km away. These charging stations can be easily located via Ather app or on the dashboard. Ather’s charging stations are equipped with fast DC chargers that can load 1.5 km per minute.
The grid can recognize individual vehicles and can be accessed remotely via Ather app. Apart from the company’s own products, Ather grid will also support charging of all other two wheelers and four wheelers that use a 5A charger. More

Honda Working On Brain Wave Reading Tech – Can Avoid Potential Accident

Image for reference. Credit – RNickeyMouse
Honda is developing a new technology where it can take input from the rider’s brain and enhance the safety systems

While riding a motorcycle one would have wished at least once in life that the two-wheeler could perform the intended actions after reading what’s on the rider’s mind. This would reduce a rider’s effort in stiff riding conditions and make up for a pleasant experience. Sounds too good to be true? Not really!
Apparently, Honda is developing a brain-wave-detection system that would help future motorcycles know their riders’ thoughts and intentions. Patent images regarding the same have surfaced online which are part of the patent application filed by Honda’s Los Angeles based R&D facility at the US Patent and Trademark Office.

    What is this technology?
The basic idea behind this technology is to assist the onboard safety system which can ensure that the bike does what the rider wants even when his/her actions may not be accurate. In simple words, this technology would allow a rider to connect to his/her motorcycle telepathically via electrodes attached to one’s helmet that would send signals to a computer which Honda calls BMI or “Brain-Machine Interface“.

The brain wave signals are then interpreted by BMI and sent to the corresponding part of the bike. The bike is equipped with a suite of electronic rider aids present in most modern premium bikes such as accelerometers, IMU (computing lean, yaw, and pitch and other dynamics of motorcycles), electronic throttle, ABS, traction control and more.

The only additional functionality will be a sensor measuring steering angle and an actuator to move the steering in case input is not enough from the rider’s side and electronic intervention is required.

In what ways could it help a rider?
Interestingly, the images shared shows examples of riders pulling out dangerous stunts like wheelie and stoppie using a rider’s imagination. The system assists the rider to carry out the stunts by taking control over various aspects of the motorcycle. The one problem here though is that even if one knows the theory of pulling out a perfect wheelie or stoppie it would take a lot of experience to do it cleanly in practice.

More importantly, BMI could act as electronic assistance to less experienced riders and help avoid serious accidents due to lack of experience. Furthermore, as per the text provided by the company with the patent filings, BMI can also adapt to an individual’s skill level and accordingly modulate its assistance depending on the rider’s experience. If Honda does manage to pull this off, it could potentially lead to a new revolution in automotive technology.

Prospects of this technology reaching future?
Since it is a patent filing it is safe to say it would take at least a few years for something of this sort to actually materialise and reach production. The cost behind developing such a technology would also be monumental and puts a doubt whether this would be feasible for production models in near future.

Honda is also working on many other tech for motorcycle riders, that will eventually help in reducing crash / accidents. This includes their prototype from 2017, when the Japanese auto major presented a self-balancing bike that could stand upright without the assistance of a rider. More

2021 Suzuki Burgman Electric Scooter Spied Again – Ather, Chetak Rival

    2021 Suzuki Burgman Electric Scooter
Suzuki is likely to launch an electric scooter under the Burgman brand name in India sometime next year

The prototype of Suzuki Burgman Electric has been spied testing once again. Like in the previous case, in the recent shots as well the absence of an exhaust canister can be clearly seen.
As mentioned in our previous report, the electric scooter is similar to the Burgman Street in design. It gets a similar maxi-style design just as its petrol counterpart, however, the electric scooter prototype is seen in a white and blue dual-tone paint scheme.
    2021 Suzuki Burgman Electric Scooter
Suzuki had revealed its intentions of developing an electric scooter back in 2018 but it was not known that the Japanese brand would be adding it to the Burgman range. Tagging it as ‘Burgman’ would make good sense since the first electric scooter will be expensive and the Japanese brand needs a strong donor with convincing looks, features and presence to justify its price. Moreover, with increasing popularity of maxi-scooters in India, it might give Suzuki a certain edge.
    Distinguishing styling elements
The electric scooter also had a grey sleeve around the footboard which offered a visual distinction. Another major difference revealed on closer observation is that on the IC engine Burgman Street employs a single-sided shock absorber on its left side whereas in the test mules spotted the shock absorber was on the right. Common elements included telescopic front suspension and alloy wheels.

    Features expected
Other design elements noted were a rear tyre hugger for better protection and a digital instrument cluster. Also, the reflector is now re-positioned from below to above the registration plate. The instrument console might feature Bluetooth as well as 4G LTE which allows for smartphone connectivity and using connected vehicle functions.
Last month, Suzuki rolled out the latest version of the Suzuki Connect which now offers features like SMS and Call Alerts, Whatsapp alert, turn-by-turn navigation, caller ID alert, riding statistics, charging status, etc.

    Rivals & Expected Price
There has been no word from Suzuki on its powertrain yet, however, one can expect it to be equipped with a battery pack capacity of 3-4 kWh and paired to a motor generating 4-6 kW power. Performance would be in the range of Burgman Street 125cc scooter.
One can expect a top speed of 80 kmph with single charge range of 70-90 km. As far as prices are concerned, expect it to be well over Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom). Upon its launch, it will rival the likes of Ather 450X, Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube.

Hero XTEC Name Registered – Electric Motorcycle To Join Xtreme, XPulse?

    File Photo.
Hero MotoCorp is developing an all new electric motorcycle for India

With Hero MotoCorp registering a new name ‘XTEC’, there are speculations that it could be the company’s first electric product. Considering that the company already has Xpulse and Xtreme range, the Xtec could be an electric motorcycle.
    Hero MotoCorp electric motorcycle concept
As reported earlier, Hero MotoCorp is working on a premium electric motorcycle as well as affordable commuter electric two wheelers. The Xtec name could be used for the premium electric motorcycle that will be launched first. This is being developed via a joint collaboration between Hero Motocorp’s Technology Center in Germany (HTCG) and its R&D headquarters in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
The concept electric motorcycle is referred to as e-US, which is short for electric Ultra Sport. As of now, no other details are available about Hero MotoCorp’s first electric motorcycle. When unveiled, the concept will help the company to better understand customer opinions and expectations.
It’s true that India’s largest two wheeler manufacturer has been late in entering the electric segment. However, being an established brand, it shouldn’t have problems in convincing customers to buy its products. The electric two wheeler segment in the country was largely created by startups and it’s only recently that biggies like Bajaj and TVS have launched their electric products.
    Hero XTEC name registered
    Naming issue
The only problem Hero MotoCorp can face is that it has to come up with another name for its electric two wheelers. That’s because according to a legal agreement, Hero MotoCorp, which is led by Pawan Munjal, cannot use ‘Hero’ brand for its electric products.
The rights for that are with Hero Electric, which is owned and managed by Pawan’s cousin Naveen Munjal. It is to note that Hero MotoCorp and Hero Electric are entirely distinct business entities, even though the owners belong to the same family.
An option for Hero MotoCorp could be to use Ather Energy brand, which is already popular in the electric segment. As may be recalled, Hero MotoCorp owns 38.57% in Ather Energy. However, that route may also be challenging since Ather focuses on lifestyle products. Switching to low-cost electric products might negatively impact its premium brand value.
Hero MotoCorp can use a strategy similar to that of Chetak, which was launched without the obvious reference to Bajaj. Chetak electric scooter was positioned only as ‘Chetak’ and does not have ‘Bajaj’ branding. Hero MotoCorp already has popular names such as Splendor, Glamour, and Passion, which could be used as a part of the names for the company’s electric motorcycles. More

    2021 KTM Duke 125
KTM India has updated their best selling and most affordable motorcycle – With new features, and colours

Launched in 2018, KTM 125 Duke has emerged as one of the bestselling products in KTM’s India portfolio. While it’s already a head turner on the streets, users can get ready for some more fun, as 2021 KTM 125 Duke has now arrived at dealer showrooms in India.
Along with some new features it also gets new colours. Bookings are already open for the updated bike, which indicates that launch could take place by December end. Hat tip to MRD Vlogs for sharing the images.
    2021 KTM Duke 125
    What’s new in 2021 KTM 125 Duke
2021 KTM 125 Duke will be based on the company’s new design language, which has already been implemented on KTM 200 Duke. In terms of design, 2021 KTM 125 Duke looks almost identical to its bigger sibling.
The changes are evident in the design of headlight, which is sharper in comparison to the current model. Design updates are also evident across other components such as fuel tank, tank extensions and tail section. 2021 125 Duke will also be getting the same LCD screen as that of 200 Duke. Take a look at the detailed walkaround video below.
    [embedded content]
Another key update will be the addition of new colour options. These are expected to be revealed in the coming days. Overall, 2021 KTM 125 Duke is a lot sharper and aggressive in comparison to the existing model. With the updated styling, the bike will become an even more attractive option for youngsters, its primary target audience.
Functional updates in 2021 KTM 125 Duke
Along with the refreshed design, updated 125 Duke will be upgrading its chassis as well. This will come from 200 Duke that utilizes a steel trellis frame integrated with a bolt-on sub frame. 2021 KTM 125 Duke will have a larger fuel tank capable of carrying 13.4 litres of fuel. That means lesser stops at the fuel station.

The current model’s fuel tank capacity is around 11 litres, which allows an uninterrupted run of approximately 300 km. With 2.5 litres more fuel, updated KTM 125 Duke will be able to do around 400 km on a full tank. With the new chassis and other design updates, 2021 KTM 125 Duke could become heavier by around 7-10 kg. Something similar was witnessed when 200 Duke was updated earlier this year.
Most other equipment and mechanical parts are expected to be the same as earlier. The 124.71 cc, liquid cooled engine is capable of generating 15 hp of max power and 12 Nm of max torque. This is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

Suspension system comprises 43 mm WP upside down forks at the front and WP monoshock unit at the rear. Braking duties are performed by 300 mm front disc brakes and 230 mm rear disc. In the Indian market, 125 Duke is offered with single channel ABS as standard. 2021 KTM 125 Duke is set to become costlier by around Rs 6k. The current model is available at a starting price of Rs 1.42 lakh. More

It will be priced on par with the current range of petrol powered scooters in the country and the company seeks to tap into the 20 million unit two wheeler market in India.
Etergo, founded in 2014, has developed an all electric scooter ‘AppScooter’ that uses swappable high energy batteries. It is powered by a 3 kW brushless AC motor. Peak performance is rated at 6 kW and 50 Nm allowing the scooter to accelerate from 0 to 45 km/h in 3.9 seconds. Once launched, the AppScooter will take on the likes of Ather 450X, Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube Electric.
Based on this, Ola seeks to amass sales of a million e-scooters in the first year of launch and will pitch against players such as Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp’s Ather Energy and Hero Electric that currently offer a range of electric scooters in the country.
The initial back of e-scooters will come in from the manufacturing facility in the Netherlands while Ola Electric is in talks with various state governments to set up the facility in India and participate in the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat Vision. More

2021 Royal Enfield Classic 350 To Borrow Meteor Features – Lower Vibrations

From the spy images of the new-gen Classic 350 seen, Royal Enfiled is not expected to make massive changes to the retro motorcycle’s design

Royal Enfield has big plans for future. The bikemaker had earlier last month revealed its plan to introduce 28 new bikes in the next seven years, i.e., a new bike every quarter of a year. This started with the launch of its new cruiser Meteor 350 a month ago which replaced the outgoing Thunderbird 350 and 350X from the company’s lineup.
Going by Royal Enfield’s plans, it seems the next bike is scheduled to be launched in the next couple of months which means early 2021. If we were to guess, the brand’s next big-ticket launch is expected to be the new generation model of Classic 350.
Undoubtedly, Classic 350 has been the most popular motorcycle from the Chennai-based manufacturer ever since it was launched more than a decade back. It has been known for a while that Royal Enfield has been developing a new generation model of the retro-styled motorcycle. Testing prototypes of the same have also been spotted on a couple of occasions in recent past. Readers have been very inquisitive about this new avatar.
    New Underpinnings
Expectedly, this new bike is likely to share much of its elements with RE’s new Meteor 350. For starters, it is going to be based on the same J platform as the cruiser. It will now be underpinned by a double-cradle chassis as opposed to current model’s single downtube frame. Although, Royal Enfield is not expected to divert too much from the current Classic’s design language since it is still very well received by consumers.

    New Powertrain, Transmission
However, the biggest update will be the new 349cc single-cylinder air-cooler long-stroke engine which produces 1 bhp more and 1 Nm less than the current 346cc UCE unit. This unit produces 20.2 bhp and 27 Nm of peak torque.
It will also be paired with a new 5-speed gearbox and clutch with less moving components in order to reduce friction. These mechanical changes will result in reduced vibrations and improved ride quality.
    More Features on offer
It is also expected to borrow some of Meteor’s features, the most notable being the Tripper Navigation system which provides turn-by-turn navigation to the rider connected via the Royal Enfield App on a smartphone. Also, a modern part-digital part-analog instrument cluster is also expected to be offered.
If all these components from Meteor 350 are indeed carried over to new-gen Classic 350 it would surely be a much promising option to consider with many new rivals like Honda H’Ness CB350 in the foray. Prices are expected to move slightly northwards considering the updates incorporated. More
