2022 Mercedes EQS Electric Luxury Sedan Is Coming to U.S. Next Year

  • The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS will be the first electric vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz brand to be available in the United States, replacing the delayed EQC, the automaker announced today.
  • The EQS will be unveiled in spring 2021 and arrive in U.S. dealerships in the summer.
  • Electric Maybach and G-wagen models are also on the horizon in addition to the automaker’s plans to electrify the A- through S-class lineups.

The Mercedes-Benz electric-vehicle plan has taken a bit of a detour. The company had originally said that the EQC electric SUV would be the first EV from the German automaker to land in the United States. Today Daimler chairman Ola Källenius stated during a phone-in roundtable that the EQS will be the first EV model on our shores instead.

Källenius said that the 2022 EQS will be unveiled in the spring of 2021 and be delivered in the summer. The electrified version of its S-class is part of a larger electrification plan. The automaker recently confirmed that it will be offering all-electric versions of A- to S-class equivalents, putting a stake in the ground that electrification is solidly part of its future.

The EQC, on the other hand, is in a sort of limbo as far as the U.S. market is concerned. It was originally slated to arrive in U.S. dealerships in 2020. The last we had heard was that it has been delayed until 2021 for the United States. But on the call, Källenius didn’t offer a timeline of the SUV, instead focusing on the S-class and EQS. However, it is on sale in Europe, and the automaker just showed off photos of a rugged concept of the EQC tackling an off-road course.

Källenius also noted that an electric Maybach is planned to appear in about three years and reiterated that a G-wagen will also get the all-electric treatment sometime in the future. “We have also made a decision in the summer that there will be a fully electric version of the G. We think, especially for urban adventurers, in many places around the world, that will be an attractive option.”
