Volkswagen Arteon Looks Even Better as a Wagon

  • The Volkswagen Arteon is currently available as a hatchback and will soon add this Shooting Brake wagon variant.
  • Unfortunately for American wagon enthusiasts, VW says it will not bring the wagon to the U.S. market.
  • VW previously dropped the Golf SportWagen from its U.S. lineup in favor of SUVs.

The Arteon is arguably the most attractive model in VW’s lineup, and it’s getting even better-looking thanks to the addition of a wagon variant that accompanies the standard Arteon’s facelift for 2021. But as we’ve come to expect with desirable longroofs, there are no plans for this model to come to the U.S., so we’ll have to admire its looks from afar.

Volkswagen is calling this the Arteon Shooting Brake to convey that it’s more rakish than its more staid Passat and Golf wagon stablemates. Mercedes-Benz has used a similar tactic for its CLA and CLS Shooting Brake models, which also don’t come to the U.S.

Volkswagen’s reasoning for not bringing the Arteon wagon to America is a familiar refrain. The company says the wagon segment in the U.S. does not bring in enough sales to justify the high cost of certifying this second Arteon bodystyle for our market. VW has previously sold wagon versions of the Passat, Jetta, and Golf on our shores, but dropped the last remaining wagon—the Golf SportWagen—from its U.S. lineup in 2019. Instead, we are getting more and more SUVs: in addition to the current Atlas and Tiguan, VW plans to start selling a smaller SUV model and the electric ID.4 crossover in the U.S. within the next year or so.
