2021 Toyota Sienna Looks Wild and Comes Only as a Hybrid

  • The 2021 Toyota Sienna is completely redesigned with a new look and new platform.
  • It is now offered only as a hybrid, with its gas-electric powertrain making a total of 243 horsepower.
  • The new Sienna minivan will go on sale by the end of 2020.

Toyota is taking some big risks with the new 2021 Sienna minivan. First and foremost is the van’s bold new styling, which makes the redesigned Sienna possibly the wildest-looking minivan since the 2004 Nissan Quest. And second is the fact that Toyota will offer this new model exclusively with a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, breaking tradition from the previous generations of the Sienna that were all powered by naturally aspirated V-6 engines.

Every 2021 Sienna will have a 2.5-liter gasoline engine paired with two electric motors to produce a total of 243 horsepower. That’s a drop of 53 horsepower compared with the outgoing Sienna’s 3.5-liter V-6, but the tradeoff is an estimated combined EPA fuel economy rating of up to 33 mpg—a significant 12-mpg improvement. Unlike the hybrid version of the Chrysler Pacifica, the Sienna hybrid is not a plug-in. The Sienna does continue to offer all-wheel drive, as there’s an optional setup that includes a third electric motor that powers the rear wheels. Despite the switch, Toyota claims that the hybrid Sienna can tow the same 3500 pounds as before.

The new Sienna is finally migrating to the common Toyota architecture (TNGA) that underpins most of the company’s other models. Toyota isn’t sharing dimensions yet, but this Sienna looks larger than the outgoing model. It continues with both seven- and eight-seat configurations. Lower-trim models offer a a stowable eighth seat that slots between the second-row captain’s chairs, and higher trim levels have available captain’s chairs that slide farther back in their tracks to accommodate a recliner-style footrest. Those who use their vans for maximum cargo space should note that the second-row chairs are no longer removable due to the addition of side airbags mounted in the seats.

The familiar LE, XLE, and Limited trims continue, and there is also a new “sporty” XSE model and a range-topping Platinum trim with all the extras. The XSE gets dark-finish 20-inch wheels and more aggressive-looking front and rear bumpers. Among the Platinum model’s features are a head-up display, a 360-degree camera view, an onboard vacuum cleaner, and even a refrigerated compartment.

Other standard and optional family-oriented features for the Sienna range include 18 cupholders, four-zone climate control, seven USB ports, in-car Wi-Fi, a rear entertainment system, power sliding doors and liftgate, and a voice-amplification system to help the driver talk to people in the back. A full complement of driver-assistance features is standard equipment, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automated emergency braking.

Toyota says it reworked the dashboard, center stack, and center-console setup to eliminate the buslike driving position that its customers had complained about in previous Siennas. A “bridge console” connects the dashboard with the center console between the front seats and offers storage compartments beneath. The interior materials look upscale—as they should, considering that the top Limited and Platinum trims will likely top $50,000 when fully loaded.

Lower trims will start in the low-$30,000 range, and the 2021 Toyota Sienna will be on sale by the end of the year.
