The Indian automotive industry is going through challenging times like never before due to COVID-19 and the lockdown protocols it brought about. Experts predict that the entire vehicle-buying scenario will change even after automotive dealerships are allowed to open.
Several dealerships are on the verge of going out of business but some automakers have announced various support measures for their dealer partners. Sales have hit an all-time low in recent history (almost zero units in April 2020) and the automotive industry has become one of the worst affected businesses in the pandemic.
Hero Electric, India’s largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer, believes that there will be an ‘EV sales boost’ once the lockdown measures are withdrawn. The company shares that a need for “contactless transportation, economical mobility and safe sustainable commute” would be the driving factor for faster adoption of electric vehicles in the country.

Data shows that global EV sales after the pandemic might touch 4.18 million units by 2021. As for this year, the figure is expected to close at 3.42 million units. At a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 22.1%, India is on its way to becoming a significant contributor to these numbers. Due to the Indian government’s strict lockdown measures, pollution levels have come down drastically in major cities such as Delhi. Hence, to maintain such a favourable environment, emission-free mobility services or electric vehicles have to be encouraged.
At present, India’s electric vehicle market is dominated by two-wheelers, especially e-scooters. Under this category, low-speed or city-speed scooters occupy the highest majority — the same category of e-scooters which Hero Electric primarily sells. To help customers buy a Hero Electric product amidst the lockdown, the company has introduced a new online sales platform as well.
Through attractive discounts and benefits across its online portfolio, Hero Electric aims to grow even bigger as a key player in India’s electric mobility scenario. Affordability and easy maintenance are two advantages of a low-speed electric scooter over a new or used ICE two-wheeler coming at a similar price point.
Sohinder Gill, CEO of Hero Electric, shared that Harvard University’s latest report on air pollution is an eye-opener. In the ‘new normal’ era, sustainable and sensibly priced electric two-wheelers would be the most desirable choice over overcrowded public transport systems. With products priced from around Rs 40,000-70,000, Hero Electric is ready to meet the demands of the market’s growing interest in EVs.
