KTM 390 Adventure at EICMA 2019
Besides KTM, BMW Motorrad is also giving EICMA and INTERMOT 2020 a miss while many other brands are expected to follow suit
KTM AG has announced that it will not be participating in EICMA or INTERMOT 2020 — two of the biggest motorcycle shows of the year — due to COVID-19 aka corona virus outbreak. Besides KTM, BMW Motorrad has also come forward saying that it will be giving both shows a miss this year. Many other two-wheeler brands are expected to follow suit in the coming days.
INTERMOT 2020 is scheduled for 7-11 October while EICMA 2020 takes place later from 5-8 November. INTERMOT happens in Cologne, Germany. On the other hand, EICMA (Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo Accessori) aka Milan Motorcycle Show is an Italian event and hence, chances of the show itself being cancelled or postponed are high; unless Italy is able to bring the current state of affairs in control.

KTM AG states that planning of such international events is currently at risk due to the high uncertainty around the extent of COVID-19. Public gatherings are restricted in most nations but the success of such indoor events require “hundreds of thousands of visitors gathering in enclosed spaces” for a few days or even weeks. KTM AG aims to contribute to public safety by taking a step back from the events especially when they have been its most popular platforms to introduce new products over the years.
BMW Motorrad justified its absence as a move to attain “the greatest possible security, predictability and transparency”. The German automaker will rely on alternative platforms (mostly online tools or social media) this autumn season to present world premieres and product highlights.
As mentioned before, both international events could be cancelled as per directions from concerned authorities or the local health department. If this happens, the automotive world would not be surprised since the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show was also called off due to the pandemic. The event was supposed to happen from 5-15 March 2020.
India’s very own Auto Expo 2020 was successfully held in early-February albeit with way lesser participation than before. At present, the Indian automotive industry is struggling with record low sales figures and immense losses. The Supreme Court had recently extended the deadline for updating to BS6 emission norms but on a conditional basis. COVID-19 has spread its effects beyond the health of mankind and several businesses are undergoing inevitable losses that may not be recovered even in the long run.
