While EV sales were the highest in Uttar Pradesh, EV penetration (w.r.t. total vehicles registered) was highest in Delhi at 7.72%
Once considered as a young market, India has demonstrated great potential and has emerged as a major automotive platform in the world. With growing emission concerns and push to cleaner propulsion, the EV penetration in India has noticeably increased as well. A lot of factors affect the EV sales in India.
Primary among them are Government aids in the form of FAME scheme, PLI-Auto scheme and PM E-Drive. Other factors that play a decisive role include terrain of operation, charging infrastructure and pricing strategies. New data revealed from MoRTH’s Vahan data show state-wise breakdown of EV sales. Let’s take a look.
State-Wise EV Sales Breakup
If we take state-wise EV sales breakup, Uttar Pradesh tops the charts with 6,65,247 EVs registered between 1st April 2019 and 31st March 2024. When compared to the 1,53,17,699 units registered, Uttar Pradesh’s EV penetration stood at 4.34%. Where EV sales are concerned, UP has the highest numbers.
In 2nd place, we have Maharashtra 4,39,358 EVs sold in the last 5 years. As opposed to the 1,10,55,082 vehicles registered, Maharashtra’s EV penetration stood at 3.97%. While Karnataka only saw 73,15,250 registrations, 3,50,810 of those registrations were EVs. High road taxes in Karnataka might be a reason for this trend too.
Tamil Nadu’s total vehicle registrations surpassed Karnataka at 84,76,042, but only 2,28,850 of them were EVs and EV penetration was just 2.7%. Rajasthan sold 2,33,503 EVs with 3,60% EV penetration and Bihar’s EV registrations were 2,14,921 with 3.73% EV penetration. Notably, Delhi registered 27,99,571 vehicles and 2,16,084 of those were EVs yielding 7.72% EV penetration, highest in India.
Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala stood at 8th, 9th and 10th places in EV sales at 1,91,185, 1,44,782 and 1,51,029 EV registrations respectively. Some of the least EV penetrations were showed by states and UTs like Lakshadweep (0.69%), ladakh (0.45%), Arunachal Pradesh (0.03%), Nagaland (0.02%) and Sikkim (0%).
EV Popularity In India
In the last 5 years, we witnessed some of the biggest shifts in Indian automotive industry along with challenges including an uncalled global pandemic. The market shifted from BS4 emission norms to much stricter BS6 P1 norms in 2020. The shift to BS6 P2 happened in 2023 and is acting as India’s current emission norm for all vehicles sold in India.
Between 1st April 2019 and 31st March 2024, there were 10.75 crore vehicles (10,75,31,040 to be precise) sold in the Indian market. 36,39,617 of these vehicles registered in India run on battery powered electric powertrains. The EV penetration figure in the Indian market turns out to be 3.38%. A healthy figure, one would say.
Boosting EV sales in India are multiple initiatives taken by Government Of India. FAME scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India) is by far the most notable and has been incentivizing electric 2W vehicles, electric 3W vehicles, electric 4W vehicles and even electric Bus and public charging infrastructure since 2019 with Rs 11,500 crore budget.
First introduced in 2021, PLI Auto scheme (Production Linked Incentive Scheme for the Automobile and Auto Component Industry) aims to strengthen EV manufacturing with Rs 25,938 crore budget. We also have PM E-Drive scheme that was introduced recently in September 2024 with a budget of Rs 10,900 crores to uplift EV segment and even upgradation of vehicle testing agencies.
