Porsche customers can now add a large image of their fingerprint to the hood of their new 911 thanks to a direct printing method developed by Porsche. Why fingerprints? Apparently, just to show the new technology’s capability to create individualized images. Pretty soon there will also be other customer-specific designs available, Porsche says.
The direct printing technology, which was developed in the paint shop of Porsche’s Zuffenhausen, Germany, training center, allows for more detailed designs that aren’t possible with conventional painting. European customers who want their fingerprint on the hood of their 911 can go through Porsche Centers to complete the design.
Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur will print the design on the hood after the 911’s production is completed. The hood is removed, the biometric data is processed so that it can’t be used illegally, and then a robot paints on the design. Finally, a clear coat is applied, and the hood is polished with a high-gloss finish.
This isn’t the first unique design that Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur has offered customers of 992-generation 911s. They can also get a sweet aero kit with a rear wing that makes us excited to finally see the 992-gen 911 GT3.
Potential security issues aside, slapping your fingerprint on the hood of a 911 will be available in March and costs the equivalent of about $8100 in Europe on top of the car’s nearly $100,000 cost. Future pricing for U.S. buyers will be “determined on a case-by-case basis of individual personalization,” Porsche told C/D.
