Volvo Recalling All 2019, 2020 Models for Automated-Brake Problem

  • Volvo is recalling 121,605 vehicles in the United States from the 2019 and 2020 model years, including every model it sells in the U.S.
  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report, the vehicles’ automated emergency braking system may not properly detect an obstacle and engage the brakes.
  • Volvo will update software on the vehicles and will notify owners starting on May 1.

Volvo will recall all its vehicles from the 2019 and 2020 model years, including the S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, S90L, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60, and XC90. The issue is a glitch in programming of the vehicles’ automated emergency braking system, which could lead to a crash since the system may not brake as expected when encountering an obstacle.

The braking system is part of Volvo’s IntelliSafe active-safety technology. According to the NHTSA recall report, the problem is missing software code, which will be remedied through an update to the Active Safety Domain Master (ASDM) software at no charge to the customer. There have been no reports of accidents or injuries to date, Volvo said.

Dealers have been notified this week, and owners will get recall notices starting May 1. Owners wanting more details can check the NHTSA recall website.
