Pirelli Cyber Tire Concept Communicates with Drivers via 5G

  • Pirelli rolled out its 5G-connected Cyber Tire during a 5G vehicle communication event, claiming it’s the first tire in the world that can talk to the driver via 5G wireless technology.
  • The tires can detect road conditions, miles traveled, and dynamic load, and then it can transmit information to the driver and warn other drivers about potentially dangerous road conditions.
  • Pirelli hasn’t yet revealed when the tires will be available or how much they’ll cost.

Pirelli announced that it has made a tire that can transmit road surface information, including potential dangerous conditions, through the 5G wireless network. It can also send information to other cars on the road.

The Pirelli Cyber Tire is equipped with an internal sensor, which will send data relative to the tire model, miles traveled, dynamic load, and warnings of potentially dangerous driving situations to the driver. During unsafe driving conditions, the information provided by the internal sensors will help the car’s driver-assist systems kick in.

It’ll also help other cars on the road be safe thanks to the 5G network. If the vehicle equipped with Pirelli’s 5G Cyber Tires starts to hydroplane, an alert could be sent to a car on the road behind it and warn that driver of the conditions ahead. Pirelli isn’t the first tire company to show something like this. Bridgestone also showed a connected-tire concept at the CES technology show this year that pairs with compatible driver-assist technology.

This was just a demonstration to show the capability and development of this upcoming technology, and the tires aren’t available in any markets yet, nor has any price information been released. We also don’t have a timeline on when we might see these tires on the market, although we expect that they could be available sometime toward the end of this year or early 2021.
