New Maserati Sports Car Will Be Called MC20

  • Maserati’s new mid-engined sports car has a new name: MC20.
  • MC stands for Maserati Corse, and this signifies that this model will compete in some sort of racing series.
  • The new model will debut in May 2020 and should go on sale in the U.S. sometime in 2021.

We were hoping that Maserati would revive a historic name for its new mid-engined sports car, but the company is instead going with an alphanumeric: MC20. Maserati says this stands for “Maserati Corse,” foretelling a racing version of this new car, and 2020, which the company says marks a new phase in its history. The MC20’s name also links it with the Maserati MC12, a limited-production supercar from 2004 that shared components with the Ferrari Enzo.

Based on what we’ve seen of a prototype mule, this new Maserati MC20 will be a mid-engined sports car possibly intended to compete with the likes of the McLaren 570S. It may have some sort of relation with the Alfa Romeo 4C, as the mule looks like a chopped-up version of that sports car, but the MC20 will have a new Maserati powertrain lineup that will likely include hybrid and electric variants.

Maserati plans to unveil the MC20 in May, and it will be built in Modena, Italy. Production is likely to start late this year, meaning it should go on sale in the U.S. in early 2021.
