Lego Releasing 1:8 Lamborghini Set—Probably the Sián—This Summer

  • Happy International Lego Day (January 28): Lego has announced it’s bringing out a new Lamborghini set which we believe to be the Sián.
  • At 1:8 scale, this one is not going to fit inside a matchbox.
  • If European sports cars aren’t your thing, you can also look forward to a new set based on Fast & Furious 9 later this spring.

Better find more room on your model display shelf. If you’re into big Lego models of fast cars, you’ll need to find some space for a new, official Lego Technic set based on a Lamborghini supercar. Details are a bit sparse right now, but Lego is saying that the model will be 1:8 scale and will available for sale on June 1, 2020.

Just because Lego doesn’t want to tell us all of what’s up doesn’t mean we can’t guess. The teaser image Lego released to announce the set shows a sports-car profile that looks a lot like the upcoming Sián, and the three bars of light in the background are unquestionably similar to the Sián’s headlights. Lamborghini is only going to make 63 copies of the real Sián, which is a V-12–powered hybrid producing 807 horsepower to become the fastest and most powerful Lamborghini ever. The Sián you can fit in will have a 218-mph top speed, and the Lego version can go just as fast—if you put it in the passenger seat while you drive.

Even though the Lego model can’t move on its own power, expect the build process to be full of interesting techniques. Lego says that the Technic format allows for, “the possibility of constructing transmissions, differentials and gearing systems” as part of “an advanced building experience that many fans find challenging yet rewarding.” Translation: This is not for little kids; this is for you.

Lego announced the new Lamborghini set at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg, Germany, today, which also happens to be the 62nd International Lego Day because this is the day the patent for the original Lego building brick was filed in 1958. Lego hasn’t said how much the new set will cost, but Lego fan sites are saying it will be 379 euros (which means it will probably be $379 in the U.S., since Lego prices don’t seem to follow the same currency conversion rules that actual money does). If true, that would make the Lamborghini the second-most expensive Lego Technic set ever, following the Liebherr R 9800 Excavator, which costs $449.

Lego has already released two other massive Technic sets based on real-world performance vehicles as part of its Ultimate series. There was the Porsche 911 GT3 RS in 2016, followed by the Bugatti Chiron in 2018. Lego has also released other, non-Ultimate sets featuring iconic VW Group vehicles including the VW T1 Camper Van and VW Beetle.

The new Lamborghini set is not the only car-related news Lego announced today. The company also said it will create a “thrilling new set for spring 2020” based on the new Fast & Furious movie, the ninth in the series, which will be released May 22.
