Officials from IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced today that they will move the Indianapolis 500 from the traditional date, the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, which this year is May 24. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the race will be held on Sunday, August 23, instead.

As an undertaking with many days of preliminary events, there are several other changed dates that the organizers announced today: first qualifying events will be August 15–16; practice sessions start on Thursday, August 20, along with Indy Lights practice and qualifying; the Indy Lights Freedom 100 race and final Indy 500 practice will happen on Friday, August 21, a.k.a. Carb Day; and a public drivers’ meeting and autograph session on Saturday, August 22, a.k.a. Legends Day.
Other events on the IndyCar schedule will also move, and the organization has published a revised schedule.
Concerts scheduled for May 22 through 24 will not be held, and account credits and refunds are being issued. Those concerts included REO Speedwagon/Styx, Luke Bryan/Morgan Wallen, and Snake Pit. Tickets to races and race-related events will be valid for the new dates.
