Skoda Enyaq, the first EV (electric vehicle) from the Czech brand, is based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform.
Skoda Auto has announced the debut of the Enyaq; the brand’s very first series-production electric vehicle. The global automotive market is paving a new path in the field of emission-free mobility (especially in the premium segment) and the Czech-origin brand under Volkswagen Group is relatively late to the party.
At the moment, very few details are known about the Skoda Enyaq. There is no information on the specifications, pricing, body style or a possible launch timeline. In fact, the company has not even shared the EV’s early renders or digital sketches. However, the name itself gives us a few clues.

As you may know, Skoda Auto has an obsession with the letters ‘K’ and ‘Q’ for its SUV line-up. Every modern-day Skoda SUV on the market or in the works has its name starting with ‘K’ and ending with ‘Q’ — as evident from the Kodiaq, Karoq and Kamiq. The ending of the name ‘Enyaq’ fits the bill for an SUV body style and at the start, the ‘K’ has been replaced for an ‘E’ to signify electric mobility.
Using an ‘e’ moniker for electric vehicles has been a cliché even before the current EV launch-spree. However, the brand has done a decent job at naming its first all-electric product, in typical Skoda fashion.
Even though nobody outside Skoda Auto knows a lot about the Enyaq, the company has confirmed that it will be based on Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electrification Toolkit or MEB platform. Looking for the ‘B’ in the expansion? It most likely stands for ‘baukasten’; the German word for ‘kit’. On this, we can only point the finger at Volkswagen who is obsessed with ending its modular platforms with the letter ‘B’ — as in MLB and MQB. In fact, MLB stands for ‘Modularer Längsbaukasten’ (German) or Modular Longitudinal Matrix in English while MQB expands to Modularer Querbaukasten or Modular Transversal Toolkit.
Coming back to the Enyaq, reports state that it will be based on the Skoda Vision iV SUV-coupe concept that was unveiled almost a year ago. The concept sported the latest iteration of the Skoda design language that takes inspiration from a Bohemian crystal. The Skoda Vision iV is dubbed as an “electric high-riding vehicle with dual motors (one on each axle)”. The combined output crosses 300bhp and the all-wheel-drive EV has a claimed range of 500+km.
Being a concept, one need not take the facts and figures that seriously. Still, the Skoda Vision iV gives an insight into what the upcoming Enyaq could be. The automotive world is interested in electric vehicles like never before while the desirability of SUVs is becoming stronger by the day. Hence, Skoda has made the right move by announcing an all-electric SUV for its portfolio.
