Maruti Futuro-e electric concept debuts at Auto Expo 2020; the very first product to be unveiled at the event.

Crossovers and electric vehicles are clearly the two primary themes of Auto Expo 2020 and Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker who has the reputation for knowing the customers’ pulse, has combined both in the form of Futuro-e concept. The Maruti Futuro-e electric crossover coupe study is expected to eventually spawn a production variant based on a platform which looks set to spearhead the company’s product strategy in the new decade.

The concept has its dimensions in the ballpark of popular mid-premium crossovers in the market such as the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta, a segment where Maruti has no leadership in. According to the company, the Futuro-e harbingers a new styling language which represents an Indian car with global sensibilities.

For starters, the Maruti Futuro-e concept doesn’t look like any of the existing Maruti products (or even Suzuki for that matter). The smooth flowing profile, a dynamic coupe roofline that doesn’t compromise on rear-seat headroom, expressive sheet metal surfaces, steeply tapering fastback-like rear fascia and unconventional front and rear LED lighting signatures represent a much-needed departure from dull, boring and boxy designs of current Marutis.

This is not the first time Maruti showcased pretty interesting design concepts at the Auto Expo but when the production models came out eventually, they were either heavily watered down or looked significantly different. However, the main elements of the Futuro-e concept’s design look almost product ready and we hope the production model retails the youthful character. Of course items like flush-fitting door handles, 3-D alloy wheels and rear-view cameras would make way for more conventional elements.

Maruti has not revealed the interior nor discussed anything about the powertrain. It is reasonable to assume that the production version would initially be offered with the BS-VI compliant 1.5-liter petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid technology. Maruti’s partnership with Toyota could yield a full-fledged petrol-hybrid powertrain as well. As the decade progresses, a fully electric variant to take on the Tata Nexon electric is also likely to be in the pipeline. If the Maruti Futuro-e sets the tone for things to come from the carmaker in the future, things are going to be interesting.
