Bajaj Chetak Electric Scooter Bookings Reopen In Pune, Bangalore – Aug 2021 Batch

    New Bajaj Chetak
Chetak electric is currently offered in six cities with prices starting at Rs 1.43 lakh (ex-showroom)
Bajaj Auto has officially started accepting bookings for Chetak electric scooter in Pune and Bengaluru from Thursday. Interested buyers can book the battery-powered scooter through the company’s official website at a token amount of Rs 2,000.
The automaker had previously announced a temporary suspension of bookings in these two cities a few months back. Chetak prices were recently increased. Customers will have to pay the new price of the scooter at the time of delivery.
Earlier this month, the electric scooter was launched in Nagpur followed by other places such as Mangalore, Mysore and Aurangabad. Prior to this, earlier this year, Bajaj had announced the entry of Chetak in Chennai and Hyderabad, however, there hasn’t been any further announcement as of date.
    Expansion of Chetak’s footprint
As of now, Chetak is on sale in six cities across two states of India although registrations are currently available for Pune and Bengaluru only. By the end of this year, Bajaj wants to add as many as 22 cities across the country to Chetak’s portfolio. The company also wants this scooter to reach as many as 40 cities by March 2022. It is clear that Bajaj is slowly expanding the footprint of availability of Chetak across India.
    Bajaj Chetak Electric Scooters
One of the reasons for this phased launch of the electric scooter in various cities is the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in the country. This has caused multiple lockdowns to be announced by various state governments which have adversely affected supply chain as well as production. The scooter was first launched for the public in January 2020.
Bajaj offers Chetak electric in two variants- Urban and Premium. The former is available at a sticker price of Rs 1.43 lakh while the latter is priced at Rs 1.45 lakh (both prices ex-showroom). Interestingly, Chetak doesn’t qualify for the benefits entitled under the revised FAME II policies laid down by the Central Government. This makes it significantly more expensive than immediate rivals such as Ather 450X and TVS iQube.
    Chetak Electric- Specs
As for specifications, Chetak is powered by a 3.8kW motor which derives its energy from a non-removable 3kWh IP67 lithium-ion battery pack. This powertrain returns an output of 16.2 Nm of peak torque. It is offered with two riding modes- Eco and Sport. The former offers a maximum range of 95km. Using a conventional 5A home socket, the battery could be fully charged within five hours.
The battery will last up to 70,000 kms, provided the battery is maintained well. Hardware configurations comprise a suspension setup which consists of a link fork at front and a mono-shock at rear. Braking duties are handled by a disc brake at front and drum brake at rear assisted by CBS (combined braking system). More

Bajaj Chetak Electric Scooter Bookings To Reopen With New Price Tag

    Bajaj Chetak Electric Scooter
Bajaj Chetak Electric is offered in two trims- Urbane and Premium
After recently going off the shelves, Bajaj Auto is likely to reopen bookings for Chetak electric scooter from April 13 onwards. This is the auspicious day of Gudi Padwa. Vehicle dealers usually receive record bookings on this day. Opening booking of Bajaj Chetak electric scooter on that day could fetch huge bookings.
It is to be noted here that Chetak electric scooter booking will be open only for a limited amount of time. Before going offline prices of Chetak electric were increased by Rs 15,000. It will be interesting to see if Bajaj hikes the prices of Chetak once again on its return.
The Chakan-based manufacturer entered the electric mobility space by reviving one of its most iconic scooter brands of yesteryear ‘Chetak’. The electric scooter was launched early last year at a starting price of Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom), however, it hasn’t been able to achieve the success Bajaj would have expected. The reason is largely due to the ongoing pandemic and the shortage in parts caused by the same.
    Design & Features
Design of Chetak has a retro appeal harking back to its roots by adopting design cues from the iconic Chetak scooter. Highlights of its design comprise a horseshoe-shaped LED headlight cluster and turn indicators with sequential blinking. The body features sheet metal panels that provide smooth flowing lines. As far as features are concerned, it comes with a fully digital instrument console compatible with Bluetooth connectivity.
    Bajaj Chetak Electric Scooter
Other features on offer include regenerative braking, reverse assist mode, and an onboard Intelligent Battery Management System (IBMS) to control charge and discharge seamlessly. Chetak Electric is offered in two trims- Urbane and Premium, the latter demands a premium of Rs 5,000.
The Premium variant gets a metallic paint scheme along with metallic accented wheels and a front disc brake. The base Urbane trim gets drum brakes on both ends and wears non-metallic colours.
    Specifications
Talking of specifications, the powertrain of Chetak features a 3kWh IP67 rated lithium-ion battery pack that supplies energy to an electric motor. This motor is rated to provide a peak power of 4.1kW and a continuous supply of 3.8kW along with 16 Nm of torque. It is offered in two ride modes- Eco and Sport. The former mode can return a maximum range of 95 km while the latter can return a maximum range of 85km on a single charge.
Battery can be rejuvenated from 0 to cent percent within five hours and it is claimed to last about 70,000km before a replacement is needed. Bajaj offers an attractive warranty period of three years/50,000 km for Chetak electric. The electric scooter competes against the likes of Ather 450X, Okinawa i-Praise and TVS i-Qube. More

The controlling stake of 51.7% in KTM is being held by Pierer Mobility AG which is in turn is parented by Pierer Industrie AG.

KTM-Husqvarna will use the Bajaj Chetak’s 4 kW electric platform for its upcoming Husqvarna scooter which will be made by Bajaj Auto in India. The duo are also working on a 4 kW/10 kW electric motorcycle platform which is likely to be marketed as Husqvarna E-Pilen.

Once launched, it will take on the likes of Ather 450X. More platforms and products are likely to be in the pipeline.
    Bajaj Chetak
With Bajaj Auto’s help, KTM emerged as the largest premium motorcycle brand in the world by surpassing Harley Davidson in terms of volume in 2018 and 2019. 22% of the company’s H2 2020 sales is accounted for by products that were made by Bajaj in India and sold in domestic market as well as in Indonesia.
For Bajaj, KTM’s partnership gave access to technologies and the right to be the only manufacturer of KTM and Husqvarna bikes outside Europe. The export operations include important markets like US, Japan and South Asia.
Bajaj Auto to return its 48% stake?
According to a recent report by Moneycontrol, the Indian automaker’s European subsidiary Bajaj Auto International Holding BV is in talks with Pierer Industrie AG to transfer the 48% stake back to the Austrian parent company. It is likely Bajaj will in return get stake in Pierer Industrie AG. If the transfer is executed this time around, Pierer Group is expected to increase its stake in KTM AG from 51.7% to 99.7%. The brands KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas are under KTM AG’s umbrella. More details are expected to be released by the concerned parties in due course. More

Bajaj Chetak Electric Scooter Price Likely To Increase To Rs 1.5 Lakh

    Bajaj Chetak
The production halt is expected to be a setback on Bajaj Auto’s retail expansion plans for the Chetak

It has been a year since the Bajaj Chetak retro classic electric scooter’s launch but the company has been struggling to realize its full potential. The lifestyle product received over 50,000 expressions of interest and has registered sales of over 1,300 units – from just two launch cities – Pune and Bangalore. Bajaj is currently sitting on an pending order book of over 1,500 units. However, production bottlenecks has forced Bajaj to close bookings temporarily.
    Bajaj Chetak price hike
Business Standard reports that Bajaj is planning to increase the price of the Chetak when the production resumes to a INR 1.5 lakh (ex-showroom). The electric scooter was launched in two variants with base Urbane variant priced at INR 1 lakh and top-end Premium variant priced at INR 1.15 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom, Pune).
It was earlier reported that Bajaj Auto has been making loss with every unit of Chetak sold at its launch price. The price hike is aimed at mitigating / eliminating this loss.
Buoyed by a strong response from the customers, Bajaj Auto is confident that the price hike will not adversely impact the scooter’s prospects. The product is said to have attracted all kind of buyers including very affluent ones who have never owned a two wheeler before.
Chetak sales were averaging 250-300 units per month before production got stopped due to shortage in semiconductor chips
    Production bottlenecks
Soon after the Bajaj Chetak was launched amidst much fanfare, India went into a strict national level lockdown which brought production to a grounding halt. Subsequent logistical issues, compounded by a worsening relationship between India and China, adversely affected the import of critical components.
Bajaj did finally manage to resume production only to put it on hold again due to acute shortage of semiconductors on a global scale. The pause in production would set Bajaj Chetak’s retail expansion plans back significantly. So, a price hike seems inevitable to limit the damage.
    Expansion plans and exports
Bajaj is currently working on increasing the local content in the Chetak in addition to reforming its supply chain network. These issues are expected to be resolved in the coming months, and the company is confident of extending the market coverage from current 2 cities to 24 cities by end of next fiscal.
Once the production constraints are sorted out and the Chetak settles into a rhythm in the domestic market, the company may look at exports. In Europe, the Bajaj Chetak could be positioned as a cheaper alternative to Vespa Elettrica. With the old continent taking fast strides in electric mobility domain, the Chetak seems like an attractive proposition. The retro classic styling is a big plus.
In addition to the Chetak, Bajaj’s electric scooter platform will also serve KTM and its subsidiary Husqvarna. A new production facility in Chakan is being readied for Bajaj’s electric vehicle push.

    Bajaj Chetak
Production of Bajaj Chetak electric scooter was stopped in Dec due to shortage of semi-conductor chips

Even as the Chakan plant commenced production from June onwards, last month production again came to a standstill due to a global shortage in supply of semi-conductors / chips. 0 units of Bajaj Chetak were manufactured in Dec 2020. Sales were down to just 3 units in Dec 2020. This is also the first time TVS iQube sales have been higher than that of Bajaj Chetak since launch.
Total sales in the year 2020 stood at 1,337 units for Chetak. In comparison, TVS iQube sales were at 290 units for the same period. Bajaj Auto expects to overcome these issues and once again resume production over the next 2-3 months. The company has now announced plans to open up bookings in 24 new cities during the period April 2021 and March 2022.
    Registrations Cross 50k
Even as the Bajaj Chetak e-scooter is only on sale in the two cities of Bengaluru and Pune, registrations have hit the 50,000 mark. Registrations are not same as booking. It does not involve any payment. Interested buyers who submit their name and number either via online website or at the dealership, is considered as a registration.
    Production Constraint And New Plant
Earlier this year too, Bajaj had production issues with Chetak. Bajaj Auto relies on its supply of battery cells coming in from Wuhan and the mandatory lockdown and further constraints lead to issues in the supply chain.
Bajaj Chetak Sales vs TVS iQube in 2020
Plans are afoot to commence manufacturing of the Chetak e-scooter to capacity once these issues are sorted. Apart from that, the company is working on setting up a brand new plant in Chakan, near Pune. The facility will commence production from 2023 and will be utilized for the manufacture of high end bikes from KTM, Husqvarna and Triumph motorcycles along with the Chetak.

Bajaj Chetak Electric Sales Cross 1,000 Units Milestone Since Launch

    Bajaj Chetak Electric
Bajaj electric Chetak scooter wholesales surpass the 1k units milestone

The electric two wheeler scene is India is small in volume, and isn’t likely to cause a dent in overall business anytime soon. While an electric future pursuit is ongoing, the way business is done has changed in a big way. Business no longer revolves around traditionally well known automakers with a large number of new independent auto business companies having stepped into the foray.
Nevertheless, it’s not all silent from the more well-known names even though they may be running the electric business on the back of a single product. Bajaj electric Chetak is the company’s lone EV offering, and has thus far in 2020 reported wholesales of just over 1k units.
Of course that’s a small percentage of Bajaj’s total business volume, and it’s these small steps that will help establish the EV business in a more noticeable manner in the years to come. While Bajaj has exited the scooter business in India, the electric Chetak has become its only scooter offering in an all new avatar.
    Bajaj Chetak electric sales
Given that 2020 has created a dent in business operations, it’s likely that EV sales potential too has contracted even though companies have been able to report growth for electric vehicles. Bajaj electric Chetak wholesales for Q2 2020 is reported at 0. However, July to October showing has been on a growth chart. Q3 2020 sales surpassed 500 units. July sales is reported at 120 units, August at 192 units, and September at 288 units. The latter being the highest monthly reporting for the year.

Q4 2020 has gotten off on a strong foot with October 2020 sales reported at 258 units. In fact current response is noticeably improved as compared to Q1 2020 when just over 200 units were reported sold. Some credit to recent sales boost can be attributed to pent-up demand and improved sales during the recently concluded festive period.
Bajaj and TVS electric two wheelers
Bajaj isn’t the only big manufacturer offering an EV in the two-wheeler market. TVS does the same with its iQube unit launched early in 2020. TVS iQube wholesales for the YTD 2020 is reported at 133 units. Sales hasn’t surpassed double digits in any of the three quarters concluded in 2020. Highest sales is reported in Q3 2020 as 76 units.
With efforts concentrated on the lakhs of units sold in a monthly basis, it’ll be a while until either of these companies are able to report high sales volumes for their electric models. In fact, it would be interesting to see at what rate new electric scooters and motorcycles are introduced by them considering regular petrol models are launched at a dime avdozen each year, even if its just a new skin or colour option.
For October 2020, FADA reported collective EV two-wheeler retail sales at 2,613 units. The number was an improvement on 2,222 units reported a year earlier. The collective electric two-wheeler market at last month accounted for 0.25 percent of the total domestic two-wheeler market. More

  • Bajaj Chetak bookings closed as company struggles to meet demand

Bookings for Bajaj Chetak are not expected to resume anytime soon
The launch of Bajaj Chetak electric scooter was an important strategic move by the company. For starters, the product marked Bajaj Auto’s rentry into the burgeoning scooter market after a prolonged hiatus, and secondly, it also marked the brand’s foray into the promising world of electric two wheelers. However, things did not go as per plan, thanks to the pandemic.
    Bookings closed

Launched in January, the Bajaj Chetak started with Pune and Bangalore as its initial markets. The plan was to expand the reach to other major cities in a phased manner but supply chain bottleneck and production halt due to the COVID pandemic appears to have hampered the Chetak’s short term prospects.
Bookings had to be closed in March / April due to the pandemic and nationwide lockdown. In June once the unlock procedure started, Bajaj had restarted Chetak bookings. But now, in Sep – bookings have been closed again. According to the official website, bookings for Chetak are closed and we don’t expect it to be resumed anytime soon.
    Screenshot from Bajaj Chetak website.
However, Bajaj is encouraging prospective customers to register their interest via a form in the official Chetak website so that they can be updated as and when the bookings resume.
    Production constraint
Though majority of the components for the Bajaj Chetak is sourced within the country, a few critical components are being imported from China. The factory closures in the neighbouring country earlier this year and production halt in India due to lock-down has impacted the electric scooter’s production.
The ongoing border tension between India and China may have also affected the components supply. If this situation prolongs, Bajaj will not only find it difficult to service the existing bookings but will have to abandon its expansion plans temporarily. Other EV makers in India are likely facing similar challenges that could lead to production constraints for a foreseeable future.
Bajaj Chetak and its Husqvarna sibling
    Husqvarna Electric Scooter
While the Bajaj Chetak is facing production constraints, Husqvarna, a part of Bajaj’s European subsidiary KTM, is working on a new 4 kW electric scooter based on the same platform. Called as the Husqvarna E-01, the premium scooter is expected to be manufactured alongside Chetak by Bajaj for global consumption. If the production operations continue to face bottlenecks, the E-01’s planned launch in 2021 may get pushed further by a few months.
The Bajaj Chetak is powered by a 3.8 kW motor which derives its electricity from a 2.89 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Maximum range stands at 95 km. Feature highlights include LED headlight, digital instrument console, alloy wheels, front disc brake and smartphone connectivity. More
