The Hero eMaestro, the two wheeler stalwart’s maiden electric vehicle, has been showcased in the form of a near-production prototype. The eMaestro Proto is based on the Maestro Edge 125 scooter.

Visually, the Hero Maestro electric scooter is identical to its IC-engined sibling but it incorporates quite a few exclusive features. For starters, it e-scooter appears to be sported smoked headlamp (probably with LED elements). The wheels and some of the suspension components are finished in copper brown while the license plates are finished in green to represent the nature of powertrain.

Hero Motocorp has revealed that the electric powertrain will comprise a permanent magnet motor and a lithium ion battery pack. However, detailed specifications and performance numbers are kept under wraps as of now.

It remains to be seen if Hero will opt to develop its own electric powertrain from scratch or derive it from its subsidiary Ather Energy. For reference, Ather 450X electric scooter is powered by a 6 kW motor which is supported by a 2.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. We expect the eMaestro to be tuned to delivery maximum range rather than outright performance.

The prototype is equipped with telescopic front fork and single-sided shock absorber at the rear. The wheels are alloy units. Braking is taken care of by conventional drum units at both ends but the final production version could offer front disc brake as an option. The rear wheel is likely to benefit from regenerative braking.

The Hero eMaestro will be picking up a fight against the likes of Ather 450X, Bajaj eChetak, TVS iQube. While Hero’s offering may not have fresh design like its competitors, it would take advantage of the benefits of economies of scale which should reflect in its price tag. We expect Hero’s first electric scooter to be priced from INR 1 lakh (ex-showroom, inclusive of government subsidy).

The Hero eMaestro electric scooter is scheduled to be launched sometime in 2021. It is currently under final stages of testing at the manufacturer’s Jaipur technical center. We expect Hero to churn out a comprehensive range of electric scooters in due course to cover different tastes and budgets.
